UPDATE: HOW YOU CAN HELP HAITI
Thursday, January 31, 2008

We want to personally thank you all who have taken the time to inform yourselves of the situation in Haiti and generously donating to organizations such as the Lambi Fund.
We received an e-mail from Karen Ashmore, Executive Director of the Lambi Fund of Haiti, and she said the organization has received lots of website donations today from you all. That is great! The Lambi Fund partners with communities to become sustainable so that they can support and feed their families and not rely on food aid charity, which can create an unhealthy dependence.
Malnutrition and poverty are concerns in Haiti, home to the first independent black republic, especially for the many peasants living in the countryside. But there is hope.
According to Ashmore:
The best way an individual can help is to contribute to groups that work in true partnership with Haitians to become socially, economically and politically empowered. Lambi Fund is by far one of the best organizations to address these issues. It is one of the best models for creating change and sustainability while working for improved economic conditions and increased food availability.
Additionally, the organization earned a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, which means they are both fiscally responsible and true to their mission.

This is a beautiful thing…
And there needs to be a way to keep the support going because the need is so deep.
CL - why not consider a program to showcase new artists and contribute to this cause. It’s no doubt the CL has a wide reach - up and coming artists could be featured as long as they make a reasonable donation to the cause.
I know that’s not the mission or purpose of your site, but it could help shine light on the need in Haiti and give an up an coming artist some shine. Just something to consider.

Being a proud haitian i am saying thanks on behalf of all of us because i believe this could help a lot of people in need. the problem with haiti is that the more well off group often does not do anything to help the lower class because of sometimes stupid prejudice and i cannot say that i have been completely innocent when it comes to that. But if we give it the attention it deserves maybe more people will get involve. so again thanks for taking the time to post this.

Growing up I remember that Haitians were the most mocked group of people throughout most neighborhoods. Worst yet, they had the smallest numbers when it came to the immigrant population. It was bad enough being an awkward kid but some of the Haitians I went to school with were treated so badly. And I’m not saying that I never participated in some of the jokes because at the time it was the thing to do. But as I got older and made Haitian friends I realized that these people are really no different than us. They’re Black, they have African ancestry and they fought to gain their freedom from slavery and servitude. Even now that I’m grown I still don’t get why Haitians are reviled — especially by other Blacks.
I wonder if the next President will finally put an end to all this hate against this country? Or, will he/she continue to ignore them like so many before them have done (especially the last one). This is really sad. Haiti is in America’s back yard and yet they get treated like deviants — and all because of what? A tie to Cuba (amongst other things)? But even the Cubans get treated better. Shame. Pray for these people ya’ll. They need it for real.

Haiti was the first independent Black Republic in THE WORLD.
They are NOT to blame for the economic situation they are in. Yes they have had despotic leaders from their own country BUT they were punished for being black and fighting against the IMPERIALIST (FRANCE) to gain their independence and as such they were punished and still being punished for that.
Toussaint L’Ouverture started the revolution in about 1791 and it continued till the first successful slave rebellion ended in 1804 and they were granted freedom.
France refused to recognize Haiti’s independence until it agreed to pay an indemnity of 150 million francs, to compensate for the losses of French planters in the revolutions, in 1833. Payment of this indemnity brought the government deeply in debt and crippled the country’s economy.
People everything has a root cause. Help our brothers and sisters in Haiti. They showed the rest of their African brothers in the diaspora that fighting brings freedom and they are STILL paying for that bravery. Even now American Airlines charges exhorbitant above normal prices for flights out of Haiti and there are many embargos against trade, goods ….. so many other things.

ConcreteLoop, I want to say to you “Great Job” on having featured the story. When this particular story was brought to light, I’d asked another well known, black site, BOSSIP.COM to feature the story…shed some light. And I’d rec’d the traditional “thank you for sharing” but they did nothing else. Then I get on here the day after my request and lo and behold, you covered it. Once again, I and the many Haitians who read your site, say “THANK YOU”.
Let me give some history as to why Haitians are highly detested by the US gov’t. We are the 1st BLACK REPUBLIC COUNTRY to have gained it’s independence…the 1ST! And by now, we all know that America does not cooperate w/ countries that play by their own rules. The only time my country gets press, is highlight our suffering. Because of our bravery, the US gov’t has continued in its agenda to allow us to suffer.
I was born here but have gone to visit Haiti many times. And let me tell you this…when walking thru the airport…to Am. Airlines…even there, the difference is apparent. Our flight was in the most remote and darkest corner. It took my 10 yr old to point that out…I retraced my steps and then made my way back to our seating area and he was most definitely correct.
America is too far removed from the state of other countries, poor countries. For many of you, this is a temporary eye opener. You’ve read it…were shocked into momentary silence but by next week, next month…you will continue in your worries for the next hot outfit…or where to hang out with your friends. Granted, we have our own struggles, living from paycheck to paycheck…I know some of you will state that you’ve got your own sh%t to worry about. But that is not enough reason to ignore those who don’t even have a paycheck to look forward to…who are simply struggling to make it one more day, hour…one more second.
Again, for you, this is temporary. For us this is reality.

And let me clarify…someone made a statement regarding Darfur…that their situation is more serious than that of Haiti’s. Please note, rape, kidnapping…killings…that is happening in Haiti also. It was so bad that while my baby sister was there…they had to close down the roads to her school…so she went almost 2 wks w/o being able to get to school b/c of the state of emergency. I had to fight w/ my mom to bring her back here. Africa, Haiti, any 3rd world country have pretty much all things in common. THEY ARE ALL SUFFERING!
No one is saying that we should focus on Haiti exclusively, but you have to start somwhere.
Thank you all…God Bless

The ignorance in the black community often makes me sick to my stomach. For Bill, Kay Kay, and DMac If you don’t care about them eating; why are you commenting? You are so proud of your ignorance that you feel the need to post your simple minded comments. But let a white person talk about their “bad experience with a black” and how they don’t like blacks and you all will be screaming and crying racism. Grab a book and educate yourselves. I will pray for you all and your families.
I am half hatian and I know all about the double standards with Haitians. Suffering is suffering, no matter what country you are from, there is no worse. My uncle was kidnapped and consequently died from it, but you know my dad was not even angry with the kidnappers. He said those people are so poor, they were willing to do anything to feed their families. Your donations not only will feed someone, but save a family from going through what my family went through.

Cee, you’re the fool because this blog has nothing to do with you Africans. We don’t care if you useless people don’t like us, because you all are irrelevant and unimportant in our lives. Also, we don’t need the regards and praise from you worthless Africans, because it means absolutely nothing from you folks. You Africans don’t even like each other, just ask an Igbo or a Fulana, or ask how a Ghanaian feels about a South African. Keep your jealousy of Black Americans to yourself next time.
