J. DAKAR ON: GOOD BUSINESS

Some time ago, economist Milton Friedman wrote an article which offered his ideas on the purpose of business. The title itself blatantly stated his view: “the social responsibility of business is to increase its profits“.

Friedman stated businessmen believe they defend free enterprise when they state business isn’t just out to make a profit, but to also “[promote] desirable ‘social’ ends.” He opposed the idea that business possesses social responsibilities: “Only people can have responsibilities,” he declared.

According to Friedman, “there is one and only one social responsibility of business—to use its resources and engage in activities designed to increase its profits so long as it stays within the rules of the game, which is to say, engage in open and free competition without deception or fraud.”

To some degree, I agree with Friedman: every business hopes to make a profit, but I do not believe that is the only intent; businesses can do good and do well (DGADW) at the same time.

NEWS: RAPPER JUVENILE’S DAUGHTER KILLED

Seventeen year old Anthony Terrell Jr. was arrested and charged Friday with killing his mother and two younger sisters.

Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Deputy Joy Deleston, 39, and her two daughters, Micaiah, 11, and Jelani, 4, were found late Thursday at their home near Lawrenceville, Ga.

The motive for the killings is still under investigation and according to various news sources, the youngest victim, Jelani was the daughter of rapper Juvenile.

Terrell is being held without bail in the neighboring DeKalb County jail to avoid any potential conflict because his mother worked for Gwinnett County.

Jeff Beaird, who lived across the street from the family, said he often saw Terrell playing basketball or washing his mother’s patrol car in the driveway but doesn’t remember anything out of the ordinary. “It’s so shocking because you don’t expect something like this to happen,” he said.

POLITICS: 2008 ISSUES POLL RESULTS

According to the 2008 Issues Poll, over 5000 Concrete Loop readers are most concerned with the economy (33%), health care (20%) and education (16%).

The other issues listed in the poll included crime, the military, immigration, the environment and foreign relations. Each received single-digit percentages.

As we’ve mentioned numerous times, Concrete Loop hopes you vote based on your personal thoughts and beliefs and how closely those of a presidential candidate relate to your own.

The following information, compiled from the candidates’ websites, offers details on what the major Democratic and Republican candidates would do to stimulate the economy, deal with one of the most critical issues facing millions of Americans–health care–and ensure our children receive the best possible education.

Keep in mind that it is, by no means, complete plans of any candidate. For this reason, a link to each candidate’s stance on the issue has been included.
