Dr. Benjamin S. Carson Sr., M.D (1951-) is a noted and prominent children’s neurosurgeon and motivational speaker. He became the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital when he was just 33 years old.
Born and raised in inner-city Detroit, Dr. Carson credits his mother Sonya’s influence with much of his success. She performed domestic work to keep her family financially afloat. With only a third grade education herself, Sonya Carson prayed diligently for wisdom to help Ben and his older brother Curtis success in school. Many had given up on Ben, including himself, but his mother never did. She encouraged him to do better and reach higher for his dreams.
Vigorous studying and a thirst for knowledge enabled young Dr. Carson to graduate from high school with honors and gain admission to Yale University where he pursued a degree in Psychology. He then went onto medical school at the University of Michigan, where his interest shifted from psychiatry to neurosurgery.
He studied neurosurgery and at the young age of 33 became the director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins. He is now known for his pioneering work in radical hemispherectomies — the removal of half the brain to help seizure patients — and as a specialist in the separation of cojoined (Siamese) twins.

Dr. Ben Carson is one of the most prominent doctors in the nation.

‘Think Big’ (click to purchase)
Carson also is a popular speaker who tells his own story to encourage young people to make the most of their abilities. He wrote the memoir Gifted Hands (1990) and the inspirational books Think Big (1992) and The Big Picture (1999).
Carson says the letters of “Think Big” stand for the following:
Talent:
Our Creator has endowed all of us not just with the ability to sing, dance or throw a ball, but with intellectual talent. Start getting in touch with that part of you that is intellectual and develop that, and think of careers that will allow you to use that.
Honesty:
If you lead a clean and honest life, you don’t put skeletons in the closet. If you put skeletons in the closet, they definitely will come back just when you don’t want to see them and ruin your life.
Insight:
It comes from people who have already gone where you’re trying to go. Learn from their triumphs and their mistakes.
Nice:
If you’re nice to people, then once they get over the suspicion of why you’re being nice, they will be nice to you.
Knowledge:
It makes you into a more valuable person. The more knowledge you have, the more people need you. It’s an interesting phenomenon, but when people need you, they pay you, so you’ll be okay in life.
Books:
They are the mechanism for obtaining knowledge, as opposed to television.
In-Depth Learning:
Learn for the sake of knowledge and understanding, rather than for the sake of impressing people or taking a test.
God:
Never get too big for Him.
Carson’s writing offers a unique perspective on priorities, race, society, success, and living out a life of faith in a complex and competitive world. He travels the world to share his knowledge and philosophy inspiring people of all ages and educational backgrounds to be and do their best. Dr. Benjamin Carson has dedicated his life (through example) to inspiring others to excel by using their aptitude and talents.

Great post but his D.O.B in Quotes like that is kind of Freaky as he is still ALIVE!
Imagine if you saw your name and next to it your D.O.B. with a Dash. Angel (1979 -) ?? Just an observation !
I just spent the entire weekend working on a Black History Collage for my son’s 1st grade class. Dr. Ben was one of the people that we included on the collage as my household has great admiration for him. keep up the great work CL!
Peace
@12 Well Said!
@ 61. I did that because that’s how the history / encyclopedia books do it. Plus mines would read 1984 not 1979. LOL! But I get your point.
Thanx y’all and remember I’m taking submissions. Try to send in some unknowns too, because I want to make sure to switch it up a bit.
Dr. Ben Carson= Real Hero
Thanks CL he truly is an amazing person, determination and perseverance are beautiful traits………….
One of my role models. i read 2 of his books and they are very good.
Thanks for the info, we need more doctors like him.
wow I learned something new today!!!!
big-ups to you truelly
Another great idea-thanks for the information, too!
His oldest son is really hot (Dr. Carson could get it too lol)
He is very inspirational. When I was in the 11th grade, the whole class of ’06 had to read his book. I think I read it again about five months ago and passed it along to a friend of mine. I wish I could have known what I wanted to be when I was 8. He is and is going to continue to inspire a lot of young, african american children. THINK BIG
Dr Ben Carson is simply amazing. I read his biography GIFTED HANDS and the THINK BIG book. Awesome books. Everyone should have a copy of those books for real!!!
I love Dr Ben Carson read his book Gifted Hands it was given to me by my mom and it was so inspiring. He is such a wonderful role model and his faith is an important part of his life he is also a Seventh Day Adventist like me.
I met him when i was in the 6th grade (im in college now)! He is a great guy and his seminar was actually interesting…especially to a 6th grader lmfao!!!
This is who our kids should be looking up to! He’s from the streets as well ad look at what he has accomplished. But we give praise and glory to the rappers who are from those same streets but help perpetuate the violence and nonsense but their insinuating lyrics and stage personas. What this man has is truly a gift, true talent. Being able to put some words together aint talent, they aint saving lives. Why should it take black history month for men, good black to be spotlighted? We need to that everyday, maybe then we will have more love in the black community.
Keep the history spotlight coming CL.
Dr. Ben Carson is a prime example as to why we can never give up. He’s an inspiration.
He’s a great inspiration that all young black minds need to look up to, not just the rappers and sports players
Oh please! I worked in his department at Johns Hopkins and that man acts as if he is not black……….trust me. He has such a uncle Tom attitude and is very arrogant.
Don’t believe the hype, if your not white!
What a great role model!
i read about him years ago in an issue of reader’ s digest. that story inspired me to pursue my dream in medicine. great spotlight concreteloop!
my son was Dr. Carson for halloween when he was 3 y.o.
I saw him speak at Yale like 5 or 6 years ago. Great man.

He is a massive role model and an over-all fantastic person I personally really look up to him. Determination is the key-even if you fall down or someone stands on you, hav a little cry then stand right back up again and keep on going. Never give up!
definitely someone to look up to i hope everyne read his bok think big it’s an inspiration thank god for a gentle man like him i would like to me such a great person i was taught about him in school more than 10 yrs ago
Great information. Dr. Carson is an example to our young men and single moms that your children can grow into something other than a football and basketball player – not to mention the barber’s, and rappers. Parents please encourage our AA Boys that rap and football is not the answer to being a productive citizen of the US. THINK BIGGER PLEASE!
