NATIONAL BLACK HIV/AIDS AWARENESS DAY
Thursday, February 7, 2008

The National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD) is recognized each year on February 7th. NBHAAD is a national mobilization effort designed to encourage black people to get educated, get tested, get treated, and get involved with HIV/AIDS, as it continues to devastate black communities.
Sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day planners and organizers nationwide are committed to increasing awareness of this deadly disease. Celebrity spokespersons involved in this year’s campaign include: Tatyana Ali, Angela Bassett, Dr. Creflo Dollar, Tony Dungy, Patti LaBelle, Sydney Poitier, General Colin Powell, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Tavis Smiley, among others.
HIV/AIDS is a leading killer of black men and women. Many of those who are infected with the disease are unaware of their HIV status and may unknowingly transmit the virus to others. This is why it’s critical for blacks to get educated, get tested, get treated and get involved!
“I encourage everyone to make February 7th the day you get educated about HIV, and a day when you talk to others, your family members, your friends, and your partners about HIV,” says Dr. Kevin Fenton, Director of the CDC’s National Center for HIV, STD and TB Prevention. “If you have never had an HIV test, or had your last HIV test some time ago, do consider getting tested again. Knowledge is truly power. It is the power to protect. It is the power to educate. And it is the power to make a difference.”
NBHAAD is currently directed, planned and organized by a group known as the Strategic Leadership Council who partners with the CDC to mobilize communities and address specific issues regarding local epidemics. For more information on National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, call 888 259-9534 or visit www.blackaidsday.org.

How is it that African Americans and Africans have the highest rate of AIDS? I don’t understand that.

@ 1 because of the lack of knowledge many black people have about the disease and the stigma about it in the black community. Alot of black people still feel it can’t happen to them and refuse to get tested and unknowingly pass it on to others and it just spreads. THATS WHY.

Seriously we are not living GOD centered lives. What we do in the dark comes to light period. We are living outside of His plan and paying for it. Its not a moral judgement on anyone, but we as a community need to stop trusting that we are safe and start living SAFE.
Loving someone enough wait, wear a condom and just not cheat *with other women or men. We need to be willing and able with every person to say no or strap up despite how much we love and how much we think just this one time.
the one has spoken-Get Tested and Live a God centered life…NOW SHUT THE BACK DOOR!

I am very concerned!
Even though cigarette related diseases such as lung cancer etc, drinking relted diseas and accidents and the dreaded heart diseases including high blood pressure and cholesterol etc etc. AIDS related deaths are still the highest!?!?!?!
Not only does that not seem right to me. But maybe I am jut a little too optimistic about my people. A majority of the black men nd women I know and read about are very well informed and scared about contracting the disease.
I am well aware of the spread of it in prison and then when those men leave there they may be infecting unsuspecting women (and men), but “LEADING” cause of death? AIDS is a pandemic around the globe, even in places like India and other countries not spoken about in depth. I am really skeptical about the severity of the disease.
Now this does not mean I am suggesting anything like do not pay attention or anything like that. Protect yourselves, live a more holistic and responsible life in every area of life. PLEASE DO NOT MISUNDERSTAND ME.
But be aware of how things can get spun.
If you were told your own race has the highest rate of contracting this predominently sexually transmitted and drug use disease how would you start to look at your fellow black people hmmmmmmmmmmmm???

That’s a good question. You can’t tell at all.I always sometimes wonder how they know AA have the highest among any other ethnic group in America.I don’t know if it aware the black community or it continues to reach up, but shouldn’t decreasing? It just goes beyond me.I haven’t messed with anybody because of the thought of getting a disease or any other.
But still people can get aids through needles by walking on the beaches now since people throwing away waste in the oceans. So yes, everyone go get tested!

Being aware of the HIV/AIDs is a good thing, but i think ppl need to talk more about things that lead to unprotected sex instead of simply saying wrap it up or be safe, especially nowadays. Remember its kind of hard to stay protected when persons are having sex under the influence of drugs or alcohol. These days much of the sex that takes place amongst young ppl especially between the ages of lets say 17-25 that are not in committed relationships is fueled by drugs and alcohol and of course that leads to lowered inhibitions, as well as impaired judgement. At the point, HIV and other ailments become the last thing on the person’s mind, granted most will try to attempt being safe, but the attempts are usually not the best especially in the moment. Also committed relationships would help in regards to lessening the number of partners a person will have, but no one really dates anymore, ppl just hook up or kick it mostly and while one can be safe doing so, numbers wise it does increase the chances that a person will catch something eventually. I am just speaking purely from experience and from wat i hear from the ppl i hang around, i’m just being real.

I’m actually getting tested tomorrow (out of pure coincidence)…I just think if you have EVER been sexually active PERIOD getting tested regularly is the responsible and humane thing to do.
People still act all shameful and sensitive about getting tested for HIV or AIDS…why? Its NECESSARY to know your status…getting tested is a need folks, NOT a want.

# 4 and # 9, I agree 100%
There are plenty of other races that do not get tested nor reveal it to their multiple sex partners, so how do we know for sure if AA are the highest on the list?
Please get tested, my cousin’s husband brought it home to her and she died with fullblown AIDS and I think he has HIV or maybe it has escalated to AIDS but we don’t associate with him anymore (not because he has it but because he went out cheated, contracted it and did not get tested) and he can not see his 3 children…so again, PLEASE GET TESTED!!!!

Don’t believe the hype?
Check with your addiction outpatient clinic, or the on in the next town. Ask to speak to a counselor or case manager. Then go to your local hospital and visit the AIDS ward. Ask questions of the nurses who work there. Call your local Department of Social Services.
These are people who work on the front lines and have no reason to hype statistics.
Then Google African Americans + HIV.
No, you don’t have to believe everything you hear, but at least do some research before you come to a conclusion.

I meant your local addiction treatment center. But don’t stop there. Depending upon where you live, I would check in with all citywide treatment centers. Especially the big hospitals.

I think the key to stopping all this unsafe sex madness is people getting themselves in check (tested). It’s very good to have the peace of mind that you are not infected, and if you are, at least you know so that you won’t put other’s lives in jeopardy and you can get the treatment that you need to make you live longer.
And for ladies, it really helps to have a VERY GOOD OBGYN that you feel comfortable talking to and asking questions. Mine is awesome. He takes the time to talk/educate me on the importance of getting tested, practicing safe sex, and all that good stuff. So I don’t dread going to him every year, actually, I look forward to it :).

Remember:
Because of the powerful drugs used to fight AIDS, a person with a full blown AIDS diagnosis can look just as normal as your next door neighbor. Not to mention if a person just has an HIV diagnosis. That person can be an asymptomatic carrier and spread the virus for 10+ years or more if they’re on the right meds!
This is not to demonize people with HIV. Most are honest and inform their partners. But there is so much going on in the black community as far as “don’t ask, don’t tell”, crack sex (believe me, there is LOTS of down low situations happening when it comes to this), shame, and otherwise.

@16 Mississippi
I fully agree with you about being informed. But here is what I do Know. when it comes to:
Crime / Sex / Drugs / deviant behaviour…..etc
more focus and attention is always put on the black race in America. Micheal Moore in Farenheit 9/11 made a good point of the demonization of the black race. Much like the example he used of the “African Bees”.
Yes AIDS is a destructive force of nature and a totally unecessary disease to contract if you care about yourself and not sucumb to sponteanous sex or intravenous drug use. BUT……….
Should we really believe AIDS which we are taught does not have any preference or respect to race, gender or sexual orientation is rising at a higher rate in the black community. Why is that!?!??!
What that says is a) we fuck more b) we fuck more and irresponsibly and c) we are the biggest drug users.
have you sen how these skanks on MTV paris hilton Lindsay britney girls gone wild and these college chicks act???????????? as an example and the girls they influence…………
And all of this more than any other ethnicity in the country. I DOUBT THAT. but this is just my opinion.
Imagine all the people who do have AIDS and do not report it because of confidentiality. How many of todays lilly white celebrities have it and we dont know because of the medication they are exposed to and informed about. Remember the same way doctors allowed black men to have syphillis untreated is the same way there are prejudiced doctors dishing out Magic Johnsn type cures to the privilieged view.
BE CAREFUL BE SAFE BE RESPONSIBLE, BUT BE AWARE OF THE NATION WE ARE IN!

And guys, you don’t know who your lady has been laying with either. Don’t think you can’t get it from female-to-male sex. Woman can be just as secretive about their pasts or who they’ve been with as well . Overall, people can hide drug addictions and diseases quite well, and you’ll NEVER know until it’s too late. Don’t thinking “Oh, I can tell”.

You are making a real valid argument. Hell white people have been counting on us to take ourselves out since forever and they do attack us mentally.
But, one thing I have to say is black people are very reckless and not only with sex. Most of us are low-income people whom are not educated about much of anything. In addition we don’t have any real world exposure to anything outside of our neighborhoods. That’s why we are so caught up in all the “shake yo a**” music and trivial lifestyles. Remember these are MOSTLY young people living unreal lifestyles. Not to mention the “DOWN-LOW” brothas.
Yes I’m sure AIDS may be high in other cultures. But many of them also have better health care and sex education than black folks. They are not DYING at a rapid rate due to AIDS.
PEOPLE PLEASE BE RESPONSIBLE AND PROTECT YOURSELVES. GET TESTED!

Black people have the highest rate of AIDS because they’re being given the AIDS virus, the same way that the Africans and the East Indians are being given the AIDS virus. The same way that the Native Americans were given smallpox in the blankets that the U.S. government gave them to “help them”. Black people probably have “protected sex” at a higher rate than any other race based on the non-stop propaganda by the American government to encourage blacks to not have children through their commercials and advertisements. Our people are not living anywhere near a lifestyle that’s acceptable to the Most High and that certainly has had an effect on our people and why the Lord allows these things to happen (Deut 28:58-61), but there’s no way that these AIDS statistics are reflective of just wanton sexual indiscretions or promiscuity. These diseases are being purposefully spread in the black community through some of these so-called “vaccinations” and “programs”. No one will get me to believe that black people are the highest in these various STD’s and most diseases in general based strictly off of their conduct. There are many things I’ve heard and read about like Operation Paperclip and the microbioinoculator that are really only the tip of the iceberg in regards to the silent war against our people.

It has a lot to do with the fact that being gay is not acceptable in our culture and so many men are leading double lives. Also, in our culture, women tend to think that having uprotected sex with their boyfriends will bring them closer to them. It’s a big part of Machismo. Both the Latino and African American cultures have to deal with this. I did my thesis on this so I have much research to back these theories up with.

@ 28 Nina (and some of what Judah said),
it is very true that in our culture ,much of which spreads to other cultures, we are a very sexual (wether dancing musically socially etc) people. Phrases like “hot Latina” and “freakum dress” like beyonce etc. Yeah we are sexual and over sexed okay!!!!! yeah yeah yeah I get all of that. And the whole downlow thing………. HOWEVER
We are talking about it being the “LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH”.
Initially yeah maybe. (if you take what Judah said to heart) But do you know how many interracial freakin goes on in this country. Madonna was fucking Dennis Rodman at one point, thats how far back I am going. All races are doing all the irresponsible fucking. drug abuse and AIDS knows no boundaries. respects no one. So to traget one race and say that it is killing them more is ridiculous. That sends a clear message that:
BLACKS ARE REALLY SILLY, THEY KNOW AIDS EXISTS AND THEY FUCK LIKE RABBITS IRRESPONSIBILY MORE THAN ANY OTHER RACE IN THE USA SO IT IS KILLING THEM QUICKER. IT IS A CULTURAL THING.
come on please!?!?!?!
Do you know how crazy that sound is if you adopt this thinking.
AIDS is AIDS transmission through blood, sweat, breast milk, excessive (and I mean excessive) Saliva urine etc can be contracted via any race through risky behviour and dubious means. There is a saying that goes” If you tell a child he is stupid over and over again, in time he will believe it.
Based on what I have read today, it will obe very soon that for Latino and White parents start to tell their kids:
“don’t fuck with black boys or girls because they are more likey to have that AIDS / HIV virus. They are getting it quicker than us”
NOW IF THIS DOES NOT PUT IT IN TO PERSPECTIVE I DONT KNOW WHAT ELSE TO SAY.
as always:
BE RESPONSIBLE BE SAFE BE PROTECTED. BUT BE AWARE OF THE NATION WE LIVE IN. CONTROL BY FEAR IS NOT CONTROL AT ALL.

This so so so very important!!!! I swear we are slowly killing ourselves.
No doubt, getting tested is a very scary anxiety attack type thing to go through, but nonetheless it is something that we all must do. (I seriously thought I was gonna pass out, no joke).
Jia (Jia-tv.com), did a great vlog about AIDS/HIV awareness. She documented her trip to the testing facility, all the way to down to her results. You see how the whole process goes down ( Here is the link to watch the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Hjygw-GuZs )
When I got tested I remember thinking about all of the slip ups I may have had in the past. But when I got my results, and person who tested me said they were NEGATIVE, I felt a sense of clarity , but at the same time a feeling came over me that made me want to protect and value my body and life more. The next time I go to get tested I don’t want to have that feeling of doubt because its not a good feeling at all!
GET TESTED, KNOW YOUR PARTNERS STATUS, AND ALWAYS ALWAYS WRAP IT UP!
THE 30 MINUTES IT TAKES TO GET TESTED, CAN MEAN THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!!!!!!!!

For the record, the organizations that are pushing the call for action are BLACK. Please read the details of the post carefully. WE are the ones calling the alarm (I don’t care for the term singling out, for it breeds the same stigma as the cause for this mess). The CDC gives the facts and is sponsoring the awareness drive.
Basically, it boils down to this: Whatever your thoughts or theories or worries about how this is being perceived is a moot issue. Either you believe it or you don’t. Those who do heed the message. Those who don’t feed into the blame game, resulting in inaction and people die. It’s that simple, in my opinion.
