THE ROUND UP: KHIA GOES AT JANET / PRINCE TO GET HIP SURGERY / J.HOLIDAY ARRESTED

Khia speaking on Janet

So in the latest beef news, Khia seems to have a problem with Janet. The rapper who was featured on the track “So Excited” off Janet’s last album, had some words to say in a recent video that popped on youtube and clarified her feelings in an interview with allhiphop:

Khia: Oh f**k Janet. F**k Janet. F**k Janet, she’s a hater. All the fans wanted to know what was up with the TV incident. Why wasn’t I on the TV you know and I just felt like Janet hated, you know? I felt like that was an opportunity for me to shine. You called me to save the day; I went in, I wrote on the song it wasn’t no problem. Much love to J.D. But my song was the hottest song on the album everyone know that. “talk dirty did ya hungry.” [Ed. Note: lyrics from Janet Jacksons “So Excited” from 20 Y.O.] And they were expecting me on TV and it was like she hated. I feel like I didn’t need Janet, Janet needed me.

Janet Jackson is a star it’s no question but we’re a little tired of those “Thriller” dancing routines. And all that other stuff she got going on there’s a new generation out here and she only did a handful of features with her brother, Busta, me. I mean she doesn’t really do ‘em, but she’s getting old so it’s now it’s…you ain’t in competition with me—give back. I mean that was an opportunity where she could of introduced me, she was on Tyra she was on all those other shows. I didn’t really need that and I don’t do features so I’m not going to say, “Janet I needed you.” But, you called me to do the song, you know I’m an independent female you know I’m a black woman. You already know how much they give us hell, you aint even recovered from the t-shirt malfunction, you’ll never be where Mariah is at right now because you’re Janet… READ MORE

Well alrighty then…Khia kept it plain and real as you can see.

WHO SANG IT BETTER: JAZMINE SULLIVAN vs. AMY WINEHOUSE

♫ Jazmine Sullivan – ‘Round Midnight

J Records signee Jazmine Sullivan and Grammy award winning Amy Winehouse are both amazing vocalists. Both ladies recorded the Thelonious Monk jazz classic, “‘Round Midnight” in recent years and put their own twist to it. It was interesting because it wasn’t until I listened to the words that I realized that it was even the same song. I just familiarized myself with the Amy Winehouse version, but I am quite familiar with Jazmine Sullivan’s version, considering that it was one of the first few records I’ve heard from her.

♫ Amy Winehouse – ‘Round Midnight

“‘Round Midnight” has been recorded in greater frequency than any other jazz standard composed by a jazz musician, so you’ve probably heard some more of your favorite artists sing it before. I can’t make a decision, but in my opinion, both versions are great in their own way. But what do you think? Who sang it better? The troubled artist or the young newcomer? STEPHEN “STATIC/MAJOR” GARRETT – (1976-2008)

static.jpg

Music writer/artist/producer Stephen “Static/Major” Garrett died unexpectedly on Monday in his hometown of Louisville, Ky. I have yet to find any official reports about his death, but I have received numerous emails, not to mention, many people are leaving their condolences on his myspace page. This is a major loss for the music industry.

Many of you may not know Static by face, but you definitely know his music. He was signed to the Blackground record label where he found his first breakthrough working with R&B singer Ginuwine. The single “Pony” became a major hit and a milestone in the careers of both Static and Timbaland. He then went on to produce Aaliyah’s “Are You That Somebody?” featured on the Dr. Dolittle soundtrack. Not to mention he produced many tracks for Aaliyah’s self-titled final album. Many of you may also remember him as part of the R&B trio, Playa, who were signed to the Def Jam record label at one point during their career. In recent months he was working on his new album, SUPPERTIME, which was slated to drop this year.

He also worked with artists: Tank, Destiny’s Child, Brandy, JoJo, Jay-Z, and Diddy, just to name a few. Make sure to view the Playa video from “Cheers 2 U” after the cut. He also made a cameo in the “Are You That Somebody?” video as well.

We would like to give our condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time.
