POLITICAL ROUND UP: “BARACK’S ROCK” / RALPH RUNNING?

Sen. Barack Obama has introduced his wife, Michelle Obama, as his “rock”—the person who keeps him focused and grounded. According to Michelle, she is just making sure he is “keeping it real.”

Mrs. Obama covers the Feb. 25 issue of Newsweek. She responds to reports of emasculating her husband:

“Somehow I’ve been caricatured as this emasculating wife,” she tells Newsweek. “Barack and I laugh about that. It’s just sort of, like, do you think anyone could emasculate Barack Obama? Really now.”

And mentions how she met her husband:

In 1989, she was assigned to mentor a young, unconventional summer associate by the name of Barack Obama. Michelle was unimpressed by the office gossip about the hotshot Harvard Law student, a biracial intern from Hawaii whom she dismissed as “a black guy who can talk straight.”

Michelle recently came under fire for leaving the impression that she hasn’t been proud of her country until now, when Democrats are beginning to rally around her husband’s campaign:

“What we have learned over this year is that hope is making a comeback. It is making a comeback and let me tell you something, for the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country. And not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change. I have been desperate to see our country moving in that direction and just not feeling so alone in my frustration and disappointment. I have seen people who are hungry to be unified around some basic common issues. It has made me proud.”

Bill O’Reilly took a call from a listener while discussing Obama’s comment who stated that, according to “a friend who had knowledge of her,” Obama ” ‘is a very angry,’ her word was ‘militant woman.’ ” O’Reilly later stated: “I don’t want to go on a lynching party against Michelle Obama unless there’s evidence, hard facts, that say this is how the woman really feels. If that’s how she really feels — that America is a bad country or a flawed nation, whatever — then that’s legit. We’ll track it down.”

RALPH RUNNING?

(Photo: Wickenden)

Ralph Nader could be gearing up for another presidential campaign. He will appear on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday, which is where he announced his 2004 presidential run.

Nader launched an exploratory committee last month and told CNN he was likely to get in the race if he could put the resources in place.

He added:

“John Edwards, the banner of Democratic Party populism, is dropping out, and Dennis Kucinich dropped out earlier, so in terms of voters who are at least interested in having major areas of injustice, deprivations, and solutions discussed in a presidential campaign, they might be interested in my exploratory effort.”

Nader also mentioned that he found Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama both unacceptable candidates:

“They are both enthralled to the corporate powers. They’ve completely ignored the presidential pattern of illegality and accountability, they’ve ignored the out of control waste-fraud military expenditures, they hardly ever mention the diversion of hundreds of billions of dollars to corporate subsidies, handouts, and giveaways, and they don’t talk about a living wage.”

He expressed particular disappointment with Obama, whose senate record he called “mediocre, and quite cautious.”

“It’s not that he doesn’t know what the score is, of course he does — look at his background, he knows plenty,” Nader said. “But he’s censoring himself.”

Nader, considered one of the most influential figures in American history, has run for president four times. In 1992, he ran as a write-in candidate for the New Hampshire Republican and Democratic primaries, among others. In 1996 and 2000, he was the Green Party’s nominee and in 2004, he ran as an independent, although he was endorsed by the Reform Party. Last month, Nader spoke at the Green Party presidential debate but did not take part in it.

Peter Camejo, who was Nader’s running mate in 2004, said he wouldn’t reveal Nader’s plans because he doesn’t want to upstage the announcement. He did say that Nader’s philosophy on elections hasn’t changed:

“You’ve got to keep running to raise the issues that are never discussed,” Camejo said. “There’s a whole series of issues that only a Ralph Nader would raise.”

I usually try to be intellectual about political matters…but Ralph Nader gets the “HOE SHIT YOUR AZZ DOWN YEAR AWARD FOR 2008″. He clearly knows that independents and moderate conservatives are voting for Obama and here comes his hating azz talking smack about Obama. Somebody tell me what poltician does not bate Corporate America/Lobbyist? It is unfortunately a necessary evil in politics, the question is how the next President of the United States will make a fear and visable alignment between the working class and Corporates of this country!!!! The Clinton’s leaned too far to the right in creating NAFTA, etc…and now Hillary wants to cry foul that Obama is “attacking her with flyers and ads” Obama is the only one who can unify this country, poor/working class versus Corporate American, Republicans versus Dems/Independents etc!

I love Michelle and it would be so beautiful to see a Black family in the White House, but that is an added advantage to our people….we are voting Obama because he can unite this nation polticially, economically and racially. I am tired of people buying into Obama is the Mancurian Candidate…Yada…yada…There are over 20 million muslims who want to be rid of the current president, not to mention the scores of others…I seriously doubt this country would allow Obama to die…they want change, whether it is a brown, yellow or purple person…the best candidate for change and to unify us is Obama…which is our blessing!! OBAMA ALL THE WAY and reject Nader and his damned madness, I swear someone is putting this foul up to this…if his azz ran four times already…hasn’t he figured out that he don’t has what it takes?!

    LATER CL PEEPS!

Ralph Nader isn’t interested in becoming president, I think his main objective is to pull votes away from Obama, he did the same thing when Al Gore ran for president. People don’t be swayed VOTE BARACK OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT 2008!! TEXAS AND OHIO VOTE BARACK OBAMA!!

i don’t think michele is millitant…….she appears to be just one of those types of people who calls it as she sees it before thinking.

Which also means that she lacks tact!

I’ll support obama if he becomes our democratic nominee but given everything that viewers like myself pickup on, about barack’s career and his wife’s outspokeness; the republicans wll not need to do much to reattract the middle vote.

The focus is off the war since the iraq situation has taken a turn for the better, so people will forget and the media spin will convince them.

  4. Miss Independent

I love Michelle! She is ideal to me…people are use to puppets, women who dont think for themselves! Michelle lives by her own terms but at the same time has her husband’s back! Thats some real Black Love…I don’t expect for some people to get that!

Fox News and the unreal factor should be sued. How can you threaten a potential presidential candidates’ wife, who is now under secret service and not be jailed. I see that as a direct threat to her life. Some fool may try and lynch her.

We should pursue this one for sure.

  6. I love Michelle, she is an incredible intelligent woman and a complete asset to Obama and his campaign. Bill O’reilly is irrelevant.

Ralph Nader is not the king of progressives or liberals. Obama’s platform speaks to a number of populist interest and Obama’s plan on poverty is actually STRONGER than John Edwards and Kucinich’s. Barack Obama has refered to Nader as a hero in the past, so I’m not sure where this is all coming from. John Edwards was never a populist. Some people have short term memories, but I don’t. When he ran in the last election he was a completely different person. And after he loss he managed hedge funds. I think Nader is partially motivated by ego.

I think people who continue to questions Obama, should go to his website and print out his Plan for America. He has the best plan to move our country forward – period.

  10. PROVOST...

I LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE Michelle Obama. I am never less than amazed by truly brilliant women, and make no mistake: THIS is the type of woman I want to spend the rest of my life with. It is impossible to measure the value of standing beside someone who is as passionate, intelligent, driven, and inspiring (the person you marry should be someone you ADMIRE!) as you could ever dream to be yourself…

Still, I voted for Hillary, and I’ll do it again. :-/
