POLITICAL ROUND UP: LEWIS SWITCHING TEAMS? / BUSH & ROMNEY ENDORSE MCCAIN / SENATE EXPANSION OF SURVEILLANCE ACT
Saturday, February 16, 2008

Rep. John Lewis, one of the most prominent black supporters of Sen. Hillary Clinton, said Thursday night he planned to cast his vote as a superdelegate for Sen. Barack Obama, according to a New York Times article.
However, a spokeswoman for the former civil rights leader told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Friday morning the story is inaccurate. Lewis’s press secretary, Brenda Jones, did not elaborate and did not respond to a message requesting clarification.
The Associated Press also reported Thursday that U.S. Rep. David Scott was discussing a possible defection to Obama, who has a narrow lead over the former First Lady in a desperately close race for the Democratic nomination. Scott represents a district that gave more than 80% of its vote to Obama in the Georgia primary on Super Tuesday.
BUSH & ROMNEY ENDORSE MCCAIN

Sen. John McCain is planning to travel to Texas on Monday to accept the endorsement of former President George H. W. Bush.
Bush’s endorsement serves as an important signal to the state’s Republican establishment that it is important to back McCain and participate in the Texas primary on March 4.
The current President Bush has not formally endorsed McCain, but strongly signaled his support last weekend on “Fox News Sunday.” The president said McCain is a “true conservative” but may have to work harder to convince other conservatives that he is one.
Bush also noted that some of the criticism of McCain was the result of “probably, some personal animosity toward me. You can’t please all the people all the time.”
Romney’s endorsement of McCain
McCain also gained another prominent endorsement this week. Former Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney announced Thursday that he is backing Sen. John McCain in his bid for the Oval Office.
“I am honored today to give my full support to Sen. McCain’s candidacy for the presidency of the United States,” Romney said in a joint news conference with Sen. McCain by his side.
“This is a man capable of leading our country in this dangerous hour.”
Romney said he had no doubt McCain should be the next president of the United States…and who should he choose as VP, Mitt?
SENATE EXPANSION OF SURVEILLANCE ACT

Vice President Dick Cheney got his wish. After warning of a “day of reckoning” and President Bush threatening to delay his upcoming trip to Africa, the Senate approved the reauthorization of a law that would expand the government’s clandestine surveillance powers, delivering a key victory to the White House by approving immunity from lawsuits for telecommunications companies that cooperated with intelligence agencies in domestic spying after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

I hope this doesn’t turn out to be a FIASCO like the whole Florida situation in the last elections, but for some reason, i really feel like it’s going to be. Not for the actual election, but the primaries. It makes me nervous cause I still feel like GWB Jr wasnt actually elected his last term, he took it and makes me worried. Things are finally at a point in the United States where people are wanting to vote and wanting to support someone and I’m just hoping it doesnt get spoiled by some shady business.

In the last election when Bush won and all those controvesy over votes happened, we as young people did not get out and vote or protest. We complained from the sidelines. If we want change this is the time to do it be proactive and effective.
It is very obvious what is happening with the Republican parties. They are rallying the troops.
As for Hilary and Obama. maybe it is time for them to put ego and aspirations to the side and join forces and have one support nd endorse the other. This unfortunately is more of a popularity contest than a who-will-be-best-for-the-country based on issues. But if they sit down and confer they will come up with some great policies and an unbeatable team. And if they show that much solidarity right now and secure the democratic vote even before the convention and start campaigning now for the white houe they will WIN!
chances of that happening are slim though……

No, if Obama sucked it up and see he should be vice, not Hillary. Hillary needs to be the president. As far as those black superdelegates switching they are doing it for the wrong reason. They are being pressured by other officials saying if they are the one to quote “block the black man from the white house” that they will never get reelected again in their positions. Jesse Jackson Jr. said that to another superdelegate that said his commitment is for Hillary and it won’t change.
I am black, and I think that is sad. The superdelegates have the right to vote on who they want. They don’t have vote with the way their district voted, it wasn’t setup for that reason. That what Obama keeps wanting to cry saying they should vote with how their district votes, but I don’t see him giving up John Kerry and Ted Kennedy.
One final thing, I read an article where more than half of the superdelegates are white men. So again the white man will in then end decide who get that democratic nod, cause it’s going to come down to superdelegates.

I would love to see an african american take the country because in essence we built the country from the ground up..but there are some serious fundamentalists out there..that have easy access to guns and ammo.

THis surveillance Bill is what we all really need to be worried about. THis gives the government the right to spy on ANYONE for any reason. Meaning wire tapping phones, access to all your emails and what you search for in Google. You dont have to be a terrorist for that shit to come back to bite you.
This government is becoming more and more Totalitarian and more like a science fiction book or movie, but unfortunately its real. I dont know about yall but Im not banking on this country to be very safe for very much longer. Yall betta get good with some foreigners or something.

BASICALLY SHE WAS APART OF THE OLD WASHINGTON OBAMA CONSTANTLY REFERENCES THAT NEEDS TO BE CHANGED. The truth is many of the politicians supported Hillary not because they thought she was the better candidate, but they like most people did not expect that Barack would be beating her. As unfortunate as it is, these people are still all about self. They aligned themselves based on what they thought they could get. They were selling themselves - now that the tables have turned, they are rethinking their support. It’s no surprise, their only loyalty is to themselves, it’s a dirty game.
I knew there was an ulterior motive for Bush’s Africa trip… this was just one of them.

Yeah. If it’s narrows down to the convention in August, then that means that the super delegates will choose the Democratic nominee, and that candidate will go up against John McCain come November. It’s actually really stupid because that would mean that the majority of American’s got out, and voted for no reason since our votes won’t count.
If the super delegates pick Hill-Bill, then I’m going to be very disappointed. She’s not going to win the election, and once again we will have a Republican in the White House.

do you know what they do with surveillance, they will monitor everything and then when they read posts like this where we are aware that there is something fishy going on, they’ll step in and start making it where we can’t even have the freedom to type what we want. They do that in China and North Korea. Anything on the internet that is not Pro-Government they shut it down because they don’t want it to influence others that maybe there is some corruption in the government. And I knew that this day would come that we would start to become the main people we claim we hate. And that security b.s. is b.s. lmao.

I hope the super delegates do the right thing and vote for who the majority of the contry wants and not for their own selfish reasons. If the super delegates just vote for who they want in office, then all our votes would have meant nothing. They have to look at the big picture and past any of their own selfish reasons. i hope they wait to see who the majority of the nation is for, then cast their vote in favor of the most voted for candidate!!! You do not sound dumb. I used to think the word democracy was a beautiful word until I went to University and learnt that democracy is a choice of the few for the many….meaning the many are represented by the few and those few have the final say. To ensure fairness and for the majority of voters to not feel slighted (whether they support Obama or Clinton) the superdelegates should vote along the lines of their district/counties and of those they represent.
A superdelegate should not go against the voice of the people. This has the potential of being a huge disaster.
As for the Surveillance Act– Bush and Cheney are a bullying two-some and it’s disgusting. For those of you who say “what do you have to hide” and the “govt is only looking into other countries to keep us safe.” Are you really that naive??
Do you not think the government has been spying on other countries for years?
This country has a Constitution- and we have rights as citizens. This government is rapidly taking away our rights and many of us seem to be falling for it rather than question these policies.

Obama gives more money to superdelegates (6 times more over the past 3 years-$694,000) than Clinton could ever pay and even takes about as much PAC Money($1,324,268) as Clinton. Why is no one reporting this? No wonder superdelegates are moving over to his corner. On top of that he takes PAC money. I don’t know why people believe that Obama is gonna get in the White House and wave a Magic wand over DC and everyone will be on the same page? It doesn’t work like. Republicans have their own agenda and Democrats have theirs. Individuals have their own agendas as well.
Yes, you have to compromise but some things you have to fight for. This is were Obama falls short because he will not fight for the Democrats. He will too busy trying to appease the Republicans and their agenda so he doesn’t make any enemies. If you want to do the right thing, you will make a lot of enemies. Why don’t people see that?
Some things ilke healthcare, which is a core issue of the Democrats, should not be compromised!!! Everyone has a right to this. More people die every day from having lack of healthcare insurance than soldiers do in year from the Afghanistan and Iraq war combined!! And we are supposed to compromise this as Democrats so that more c hildren and those who live in poverty or are disadvantaged can die! I say no to the Republicans and Obama on this. No compromise. Obama stop trying to compromise and appear that you will move America in a post-partisan direction.
Reality will hit him hard. If he wants to do the right thing and make many reforms he will make plenty of enemies with many Republicans and some Democrats. But You can not compromise your issues or policies to appease Republicans or anyone else. Why don’t democrats realize this is a big problem with Obama? It’s not about getting a Democrat in the White House. It’s about getting the Right Democrat or the Right Person into the White House who will fight for the party’s ideals and core issues. Otherwise Obama should have ran as an independent. But he didn’t. Now he wants to run on the democratic party ticket and destroy the party by playing nicey nice with the Republicans knowing that they don’t care about the average American or the Democrats policies o r issues. He just wants everyone to like him. And be the Popular Kid Washington D.C.’s high school.
Well guess what Obama…MLK and Jesus Christ had enemies. In particular, Jesus Christ during his time was not popular, not a rock star, no the American Idol winner, not the cool kid. He was hated by many and they killed him for it. Why? Because he stuck to his core issues and tried to change people and help the poor and those who really need it. He was by far the most hated man of his time except for the few disciples who followed him.
Both MLK and Jesus Christ had real enemies and plenty of people who hated them because they were trying to do the right thing and stick to their core issues and not trying to get people to just like them.
Hillary Clinton has made enemies because she tried to take stands on things and tried to do what she has thought was right. Yes she has made mistakes and she probably regrets them but is trying to make amends. But she has made ene mies because she has tried to do the right thing like getting healthcare for people who need it. And yes she does work bipartisanly when it is needed to get some reforms.
The thing is Obama doesn’t bother trying to stand for anything. He is too busy voting present on every issue and getting ethics reform passed. He just wants people to like him. This is why he will make a weak president. He will be another Jimmy Carter. I don’t want that. I want a fighter in the White House.

This whole holier than thou post is insulting…. All this yammering and you could have said I’m voting for Hillary because she is my candidate.
I highly doubt OBAMA thinks he can walk into the White House and make changes right away. He is asking us as AMERICANS to help him turn this country around. and last time I looked they were basically selling me the same policies slightly differing on certain things. She is constantly saying I and he is saying WE. and yes its a WE thing, because we have sat around and let Bush and all his minions run our country into the ground all based on FEAR.
Yup, Obama wants to unite the country and not polarize it like your candidate does constantly. Obama Fights for the Democrats and the Independents nothing to hide behind or ashamed of.. This is one of the reasons why he my choice.

Senator Clinton has been a champion for civil rights and women’s rights…but somewhere somehow we blacks have forgotten that…why we are giving her the big f you, she is in TX campaigning for the brown vote…so if she takes TX on the brown vote and OH and PA on the blue collar vote…what then? And those of “us” that are making the Clintons out to be bad guys what if Hillary wins? She’s so evil and all wrong for the position, so are you going to switch to red? or vote independent? I don’t hear any speaking about the issues…WE, not Bill, not Hillary, but the BLACK community has made this election an issue of race.
I am black, and I am proud to say I will be casting my vote for Hillary in the TX primary on March 4th. In regards to the issues…I agree with her more so than Obama. I also think that Obama’s policies on economics are too shallow, and I don’t know if he has mapped out effective strategies to implement the change he preached.
The republicans are rejoicing because the democrats are handing them a victory.
America is ready for a black president, however, black Americans are not.

People, don’t fall for this ish. These black delegates don’t mean shit to nobody but us, the white vote is what counts. John Kerry had every actor in hollywood stumping for him and he still lost to Bush. Hillary is gonna win cause as much as people claim they voting for Obama, come election day Hillary will win by a land slide. Both her and Bill kept us with some jobs & kept gas low, Obama is gonna be another Kerry, the one everyone claims they’ll vote for but then election time, that ish is gonna fall to peices.

The thing that I like about Obama is his call to arms. He encourages people to take action. It is up to us to make changes in the government. Call your representatives, support campaigns of people, be strategic in getting your needs addressed. It’s not about one politician - and even he says that. He is not the Magic Negro that’s gonna ’save’ us. We have to save ourselves. Bush rigged the election but then people sat back and did little about it. That’s why we’re in this mess. Other people can only do what we allow. I bet if there had been thousands of people marching, various protests and better planning we could have stopped a lot of things that have happened. And the gov’t has been spying on people for as long as they’ve had the technology the FISA bill just made it legal and obvious. Bush has not set foot in the city of San Francisco once during his terms because he is afraid of being met by an organized group of protesters and having it in record. Imagine what people could have gotten done all over the country. Even voting some Dems back in the House and Senate didn’t bring about an immediate change like pulling out of Iraq. There’s a lot of work that has to be done. So I say win or lose the nomination, if enough people get motivated to DO something about fixing the gov’t then Obama will have done more for the good of the country than most politicians in office.

Am I the only one experiencing margins being cut off on the left side???
Anyway — this wiretapping thing is exactly why we need CHANGE in Washington. Bush is steadily scaring people into giving up their civil liberties, and the telecom industries are backing him up on this. Again — a small group of the rich and influential making decisions for all of us. Unfortunately Hillary would be more of the same since she has no problem with accepting lobby money. McCain and Obama are much better on this point than Hillary.
Still behind Obama all the way — the man with the intellect, inspiration, the plan, and the temperment for change!

I’m not even worried about these superdelegates. Billary thought they had “secured” their support even before this race kicked off, but truth is that folks want to roll with a winner.

MY PEOPLE, We need to do our homework when it comes to ALL of our candidates!
Before you pick a side Democrat or Republican explore what each candidate has to offer and exactly what kind of CHANGE they will bring to this great country of ours. Just because you are black doesn’t automatically make you A DEMOCRAT! Let’s be smart and make our own decisions. You can go to WIKIPEDIA.com and checkout every candidate and all the termonology that you don’t understand. CNN.com also gives a breakdown of something that may be confusing. STUDY!!!! DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!!!

Superdelegates are the key and I won’t say too much about that surveillance act other than keep everything on the up and up. Don’t even use slang or joke about something via wireless/wired that may sound improper.

I am a Obama supporter but if Hillary has more pledged delegates by the convention or vice versa that person should be the democrat nominee. I don’t think the super delegates should get involved, if they must then they should vote how their district voted. If they don’t their districts/counties will feel like they( super delegates) don’t care about who they think will be the best nominee.
I know one thing if it comes down to Hillary/McCain I will do a write in or don’t vote at all because I don’t like or believe in neither one of them and I shouldn’t have to choose which one I like the most if I’m not satisfied with neither.

You keep finding it necessary to claim that you’re black. And time and time again, you make it obvious that you are not.

No black person in their right mind will ever say something so dumb and corny. Boring-ass, transparent hack. Do you numb nuts even realize how corny you are? Seriously.
