POLITICS: DEMOCRATIC DEBATE RECAP
Friday, February 1, 2008

In the last debate before Super Tuesday, Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama faced off Thursday evening in Los Angeles.
The two repeatedly associated themselves with Sen. John Edwards, who dropped out of the race earlier this week and whose endorsement both are seeking. Both also seemed to assume that Sen. John McCain will win the Republican nomination for president.

The evening was, for the most part, civil and offered a discussion on the issues and where the two candidates differed on them.
“I would emphasize that what really is important here, because the Republicans were in California debating yesterday: they are more of the same,” said Clinton. “Neither of us, just by looking at us, you can tell, we are not more of the same. We will change our country….On January 20, 2009, one of us will be sworn in as president and will have a stack of problems inherited from a failed administration.”
A lot of time was spent outlining their policy differences on the issue of healthcare. According to Clinton, for healthcare to be universal, it must be mandatory. Obama disagrees.
“She believes that we have to force people who don’t have health insurance to buy it — [that] otherwise, there will be a lot of people who don’t get it,” Obama said. “I don’t see those folks.”
The candidates also clashed over the issue of immigration. Obama mentioned that to suggest that the economic problems we all are facing are the result of immigration is a “scapegoat” and that we should not use immigration as an excuse. Clinton, on the other hand, said illegal immigration hurts American workers.

Although both candidates answered the question without really answering the question, the notion of the two being a “dream ticket” for the Democrats concluded the evening. Obama said:
“I respect Sen. Clinton. I think her service to this country has been extraordinary. And I’m glad that we’ve been walking on this road together and that we are still on that road. We’ve got a lot more road to travel. And so I think it’s premature for either of us to start speculating about Vice Presidents — I think it would be premature and presumptuous.”
Clinton also shed no light on whether she thought an Obama/Clinton or Clinton/Obama ticket was a possibility:
“This has been an extraordinary campaign, and I think both of us have been overwhelmed by the response that we have engendered, the kind of enthusiasm and intensity that people feel about each of us,” she said. “And so, clearly, we are both dedicated to doing the best we can to win the nomination, but there is no doubt we will have a unified Democratic Party.”
But she did offer a great response when asked if there was something wrong with two families controlling the presidency over the last four presidencies. Clinton responded, “It did take a Clinton to clean after the first Bush, and I think it might take another one to clean up after the second Bush.”
CSPANJUNKIE on YouTube has uploaded the debate in its entirety.

Concrete loop is far from fair and balanced when they completly leave out the republicans.
The implication is we arent smart enough to pick who is in our personal interests or who has the best policies for our people. So here, we will choose the socialist/welfare kings on the democratic side who like to keep us on welfare and public housing so we never progress and start buying up real estate in their lily white communities.
Go to the south. In places where there are many black stores, banks and so on like raleigh NC and maryland , they are republicans. Why? Because at the core republicans are for freedom, low taxes, property rights sound currency. Democrats want to take wealth from the middle class and pay for social programs for the poor that dont help them. With core republican prinicples there would be a lot more prosperity and the people who get left behind would be few, and since everyone would be better off charity could take care of them and local communities who know whats best for its people rather than DC throwing money at them,

“Obama doesn’t have a plan on immigration reform; he says “just give them a license”. At least Hillary say’s they need to work toward becoming legal and pay a fine. I wanted to curse at Obama when he said that crap last night, and it looks like some of you are brainwashed or maybe you’re illegals and this is so beneficial to you.”
I HATE WHEN PEOPLE WHO DON’T KNOW, TALK LIKE THEY KNOW.
THE WHOLE CONCEPT OF A PATH TO CITIZENSHIP - WHICH OBAMA WAS PART OF, IS BASED ON PAYING A FINE, LEARNING ENGLISH ETC. HOW IS HE ONE OF THE WRITERS OF THE BILL BUT YET YOU SAY HE HAS NO IMMIGRATION PLAN?
THEY ARE ABOUT 10 STATES IF I’M ACCURATE THAT ALLOW PEOPLE TO HAVE LICENSES WITHOUT PROVING CITIZENSHIP. MY ISSUE WITH HILLARY IS, I DON’T WANT PEOPLE DOING HIT AND RUNS …BECAUSE THEY ARE AFRAID OF BEING DEPORTED. IF YOU HAVE A WHOLE BUNCH OF PEOPLE DRIVING WITHOUT A LEGAL LICENSE, IF ANY ACCIDENTS HAPPEN , I’M REALLY SORRY FOR THE PERSON WHO GOT HIT OR CAR GOT TOTALED.

she has the same amount of experience as obama.
She helped kids sue their parents for spanking them early on then she was a walmart lawyer. Then she was first lady, then senator. Which the only reason she got that seat is because she owns a house in westchester. Shes not from NY.

Anybody that votes for Hillary and her unsuccessful and unrealistic health care plan is really naive.
I could care less what anyone else thinks, but if they start automatically deducting from my check, which they are already doing enough of, I would through a damn fit, and I believe anyone else in my position would also.
I am one of those people that barely goes to the hospital, but work in a medical office. I see it everyday, some would rather pay out of pocket than to get insurance.
So, i ask you, what type of country do we live in when it’s mandatory to get something you don’t want at the moment. Like Barack said, he believes every American wants insurance, and if it was affordable we would get it.
This among other things that she has said or done makes me question her experience.
If we vote hillary into the Whitehouse I feel sad for us Americans. Honestly, I don’t care who the republican nominee is, I will vote for them before voting for her. She can not be trusted.
And what about making tuition affordable, I have yet to hear her say anything about this.

Flylike, I appreciate you posting that link. I will definitley read the entire speech.
Yusef X, I think you will have to ask President Bush that question. I honestly don’t building fences or walls will help. I think we need to dig deeper and ask what is causing this surge of illegal immigrants to cross the border illegaly. But I think we already know the answer to that. Mexico is not taking care of their own while America seems to be the land paved with gold which we know is not the case right now, but compared to their situation America seems to have a lot more to offer.
Why is it when Cubans come over we give them political amnesty and create a path to citizenship but Mexicans and Haitians get the other not-so-pleasent end of the stick?
I can understand your concern about the over 140 bases around the world but ever since World War II that’s how it has to be in order to react quickly and effectively. I do know that we do not need another permanent base in Iraq.
Let the Iraqis work it out, because as long as we support Israel there will never be peace in the Middle East. Let’s shift focus to upholing civil liberties around the world and at home. Let’s wage a war on poverty now that’s some real homegrown terrorism.

I agree with your comment in # 74, but this Ron Paul nonsense is exactly that, nonsense. Give it a rest already. He has an ice cube’s chance in hell of winning the election for the President of the United States. Obama will proabably be the VP, but Hillary will be president. I agree also that most of the public are easy dupes that deserve to be spoken down to. Any buffoon that falls for the same okey-doke everytime deserves nothing but disdain. In regards to the “V chip” and the lineage of Obama, brother you should try to keep it simple and steer clear of information like that unless you must bring it out. Most people believe the media hype machine and everything that they see on television. Obama’s relation to Cheney and Bush’s relation to John Kerry are documented fact that has been printed and can be referenced on genealogical websites and mainstream newspapers and publications. I saw it in the New York Post, lol. If it’s conspiracy, then all mainstream news is conspiracy. The seed of “conspiracy” is the stupidity and incredulity of the masses. Then the same negroes that claim everything outside their realm of understanding is a “conspiracy” are at a loss for words and thoughts when real things get exposed, i.e. Hurricane Katrina and the Haitian dirt cookies.

I see you fam. Ron Paul is a long shot. Only because of the media and establishment. The media pays him no mind and neither does the establishment, simply because he has the best interests of the public at heart. Thats pretty pathetic in this day in age with the internet when you dont need the TV media anymore.
I have to cosign pretty much everything else
@ westindianbeauty
So we need bases in other countries to react quickly to something going on halfway around the world that has nothing to do with the US? What sense does that make that the US government is sending all my tax money overseas to maintain bases that have no purpose, but people are starving here.
The big problem I have with hillary and obama is there is NO way to pay for what they propose despite what nonsense they tell you.

As a person studying medicine and also public health, Hillary Clinton plan is very flawed. By forcing everyone to have health insurance that means the insurance companies can charge whatever they want and everybody has to pay it by law; therefore she is making insurance companies richer than what they are already. Obama’s plan, on the other hand which is to lower health care to an affordable rate, in order effective would make a lot of pharmaceutical ceo’s and health insurance executives have to lose their million dollars in order to make this possible. Because the extra costs were paying for insurance and medicine does not go to making the drug or to the doctor, nurse, or hospital; that money goes to health insurance ceos and pharmaceutical company ceos pockets. In fact, doctors don’t even make as much as they used because of insurance companies. So her plan, in essence, gives more money to insurance companies.
173.
Yusef X
Friday, February 1, 2008 /
Very Well said NENE you must have an understanding of freemarkets
her plan is corporate welfare
Obamas is also to an extent
but the only way to eliminate the power of insurance companies is health savings accounts. Which will mean you set aside money and then use it when you need to but in the meantime your not paying for something your not using. By eliminating managed care , the FDA, cross state boundaries. Import from canada and so on. All of those things would have insurance companies scrambling for your business and no the other way around. Mandates always raise costs. New hampshire has the cheapest car insurance in the country because its not mandated, meaning the companies HAVE to compete for the lowest cost in order to get business.

Friday, February 1, 2008 /
@ Yusef, People are getting excited saying that she is going to make everyone health insurance and universal health care across the board. What she is not saying is you still have to pay for it and insurance companies can charge what they want for a monthly premium and you still have to pay it because your mandated by law. So who is really being helped by this us or the insurance company, she used to be a corporate lawyer don’t get it twisted.

The whole insurance issue is just a mess within itself mandated healthcare does not help with skyrocketing deductables , complicated referal programs, useless appeal systems , in-netwok providers,out-network providers, the share of cost, and the most upseting to most people prescription formularies . People cannot afford to get sick or maintain health, and lord help you if you have a chronic disease. And alot of doctors are no better , do you know how many pharmacetical sales reps frequent the dr’s offices and pharmacies? most pharmacies dont even want the reps near them , because its against ethics, not that it hasn’t been done before just that one mail order pharmacy got caught giving customer incentives for requesting a certain prouct form their doctoer and got spanked by the Federal Government , so now theres this big watchdog group and all this ethics training LOL,but alot of docotors allow the reps to lavish them with gifts beyond just pens and labled sticky notes, I’ve seen people pay copays of $800.00 (yes a copay) for a medication that was no more effective for her ailment than chewing gum !

Look at Ron Pauls position on healthcare
The federal government decided long ago that it knew how to manage your health care better than you and replaced personal responsibility and accountability with a system that puts corporate interests first. Our free market health care system that was once the envy of the world became a federally-managed disaster.
Few people realize that Congress forced Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) on us. HMOs rose to prominence through federal legislation, incentives, and coercion.
Now, the Food and Drug Administration’s bias toward large pharmaceutical companies enlarges their power, limits treatment options, and drives consumers to seek Canadian medicines. Regulations from D.C. make it virtually impossible for small business owners to cover their employees. The unemployed often cannot afford insurance, meaning those who need basic medical attention overcrowd emergency rooms and drive up premiums.
The federal government will not suddenly become efficient managers if universal health care is instituted. Government health care only means long waiting periods, lack of choice, poor quality, and frustration. Many Canadians, fed up with socialized medicine, come to the U.S. in order to obtain care. Socialized medicine will not magically work here.
Health care should not be left up to HMOs, big drug companies, and government bureaucrats.
It is time to take back our health care. This is why I support:
* Making all medical expenses tax deductible.
* Eliminating federal regulations that discourage small businesses from providing coverage.
* Giving doctors the freedom to collectively negotiate with insurance companies and drive down the cost of medical care.
* Making every American eligible for a Health Savings Account (HSA), and removing the requirement that individuals must obtain a high-deductible insurance policy before opening an HSA.
* Reform licensure requirements so that pharmacists and nurses can perform some basic functions to increase access to care and lower costs.
By removing federal regulations, encouraging competition, and presenting real choices, we can make our health care system the envy of the world once again.

Yes I would because healthcare should be free and if paying 30% ST or 40% IT is a way to assure that me and my family can go to the doctor and not go bankrupt because of cost, or worse die because insurance won’t cover the cost and the hospital turns the sick away. Obama 08
Saturday, February 2, 2008 /
Obama won last nights debate hands down. He spoke indept about his platform and vision for the country.
For those of you having difficulty understanding his healthcare plan it’s this simple. If you need healthcare it will be made affordable to you based on your income. If you are poor and are low income it’s free. If you have children under 18, they’re required to be covered. No one is turned away for prexisting conditions or because they can’t afford to pay. It’s that simple.
Hillary’s plan mandates that everyone by law sign up for health insurance and they will recieved discount rates based on their income in the form on Tax Credits. If you do not sign up, you will be breaking the law and can be fined.
Obama believes people aren’t signing up for healthcare, because they can’t afford it, not because they aren’t being forced too and I agree. Most people who don’t have healthcare want it but can’t afford it. If you make it affordable to them and don’t turn them away for prexisting conditions than you have healthcare for everyone. Obama has already helped deliver healthcare to Illionios children so I rather go with the person who got it right the first time.
Also, please understand that Hillary’s plan is not Universal Healthcare like you see in Canada or France or England. In those countries healthcare is free and everyone pays through their taxes. Both of these plans require some kind of individual contribution. Neither of these plans provide that.
People who continue to say that Obama has no substance are just not reading his platform or his record. If you allow yourself to be educated by CNN and MSNBC than you will never make smart decisions in the voting booth. Read the candidates platforms, call their campaign offices and ask questions, find the volunteers in your area and ask them for information. I’m conviced that if people were actually doing that they would know that Obama’s the best choice. Of all the candidates he is the one who has actually spoke most about the issues and he is the only candidate that actually has a genuine philosphy on how to run government from the bottom up. His campaign alone is a testiment to that. He’s mobilized and organized more grassroot activism and donations than any compaign in history. Thats a model for how he plan’s to govern.
If you’ll are prepared to allow a dynasty to continue - ok. But I’m ready for a new direction with a proven leader who is the most innovative and principled candidate the Democratic party has offered for years.

@ Yussef, if you believe all of problems are solved by the free markets than you are out of your mind. The free market and capatalism unchecked have been two of the greatest perpetuators of the striking disparities we see in our world today. If you need any indication for why the repbulican party and their backwards economic theory, focused on dergulation and tax incentives doesn’t work, just look are the state of our economy right now. The republican party had proven time and time again to be worse at growing an economy than anyone. And if the Bush error is any indication - they also have proven to spend more, create a bigger deficit and make governement bigger.

What I want is an Obama - Bloomberg ticket. Or even Obama - Edwards. If Hilary wins the nom, I’m voting for the most bearable person for another four years — which is certainly not her. This country is more than ready for a new beginning.
