POLITICS: DEMOCRATIC DEBATE RECAP

Friday, February 1, 2008

In the last debate before Super Tuesday, Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama faced off Thursday evening in Los Angeles.

The two repeatedly associated themselves with Sen. John Edwards, who dropped out of the race earlier this week and whose endorsement both are seeking. Both also seemed to assume that Sen. John McCain will win the Republican nomination for president.

The evening was, for the most part, civil and offered a discussion on the issues and where the two candidates differed on them.

“I would emphasize that what really is important here, because the Republicans were in California debating yesterday: they are more of the same,” said Clinton. “Neither of us, just by looking at us, you can tell, we are not more of the same. We will change our country….On January 20, 2009, one of us will be sworn in as president and will have a stack of problems inherited from a failed administration.”

A lot of time was spent outlining their policy differences on the issue of healthcare. According to Clinton, for healthcare to be universal, it must be mandatory. Obama disagrees.

“She believes that we have to force people who don’t have health insurance to buy it — [that] otherwise, there will be a lot of people who don’t get it,” Obama said. “I don’t see those folks.”

The candidates also clashed over the issue of immigration. Obama mentioned that to suggest that the economic problems we all are facing are the result of immigration is a “scapegoat” and that we should not use immigration as an excuse. Clinton, on the other hand, said illegal immigration hurts American workers.

Although both candidates answered the question without really answering the question, the notion of the two being a “dream ticket” for the Democrats concluded the evening. Obama said:

“I respect Sen. Clinton. I think her service to this country has been extraordinary. And I’m glad that we’ve been walking on this road together and that we are still on that road. We’ve got a lot more road to travel. And so I think it’s premature for either of us to start speculating about Vice Presidents — I think it would be premature and presumptuous.”

Clinton also shed no light on whether she thought an Obama/Clinton or Clinton/Obama ticket was a possibility:

“This has been an extraordinary campaign, and I think both of us have been overwhelmed by the response that we have engendered, the kind of enthusiasm and intensity that people feel about each of us,” she said. “And so, clearly, we are both dedicated to doing the best we can to win the nomination, but there is no doubt we will have a unified Democratic Party.”

But she did offer a great response when asked if there was something wrong with two families controlling the presidency over the last four presidencies. Clinton responded, “It did take a Clinton to clean after the first Bush, and I think it might take another one to clean up after the second Bush.”

CSPANJUNKIE on YouTube has uploaded the debate in its entirety.

This debate was great. Ironically enough with John Edwards NOT involved this was the most interesting & the one where MOST of the questions were answered completely & I believe honestly. Was very interesting to see them AVOID (where they really now….) the question of John Edwards as VP. I do agree with both of them that McCain is almost assured the Republican Nomination. He’s not as bad a choice as some of the other candidates BUT we have have nearly 8 years of Republican Subsidised h*ll. ANYTHING at this point, would be a DRASTIC improvement!!!

I HATE THE BUSHES (but at least Herbert Walker tries to ACT like he is a human & in his older age & wisdom has tried to distance himself from W aka Alfred E Newmann & his sheer ignorance, apathy, AND stupidity)

I listened to their stance on immigration, and I’m kinda like eh… on the no drivers licenses. I’m not sure how I feel about that, and I’m not sure how the driver’s licenses came to be such a big issue. I do know they haven’t proposed an actual plan, they talk about “comprehensive immigration reform” but what does this mean people. What are your steps? They went back an forth. Obama saying he’d worked with Ted Kennedy on this, and then Clinton saying she’d been talking about immigration before Obama was even in the senate, ok I laughed at that, but still you’re talking around the issues.

I don’t think immigrants should HAVE to learn english, that wasn’t the requirement when this country was founded, life liberty and he pursuit of happiness, oh…if you learn english. I have ALOT of family that do not speak english getting along JUST FINE. Paying taxes like the rest of us, working and raising kids who do speak english…lol but alot of times I think america leaves it up to the countries of orgin to have a systemized way for people to get out of the country and enter america…and there is no real plan here.

Anyway, I’m still undecided, but I will be voting Tuesday ::clutching my voter registration card::, now let me go find my Vote or Die shirt, it’s around here some where.

Very good debate, loved that they were able to point out their differences and get their points across without attacking each other, even though there were some sly attacks from Obama. I also loved the comment from Hillary.

I would love to see a Hillary/Obama ticket, that way it would be almost guaranteed that the dems get the White House. Then after 8 years Obama can run for president again after he has gained the much needed experience in national politics.

I have never been more proud to be a Hillary supporter!!!
God she did well tonight!!! I literally got shivers listening to her speak sometimes. She has LEADER written all over her. I was very encouraged to hear that she visited 82 countries and met with numerous foreign government officials during her tenure as first lady; that is exactly the kind of experience we need when our international standing is so dismal. She has the contacts and the know-how to get us back in the world’s good graces. Not to mention all the good she will do for people on our shores. god I hope she is the next President of the United States!!
and Hil: if you get the nom, pick Obama as your VP! Same to Obama if he wins: pick Hillary. You two will be simply unbeatable~
oh and make Edwards Attorney General~

When the debate started, I was undecided (Actually, I like Ron Paul, but he won’t be elected, which is another thing all together.) So, for me, this was an attempt for each candidate to get my vote. I was 50/50 going in. At the first break, I gave it to Hilliary; Obama stumbled on the ideas of health care too much. But when the conversation turned to the Iraq War (Stop the War/Support the Troops!), I went back to 50/50; as with her husband, if Hilliary would have admitted that she was wrong about the Iraq War, I would have had more respect for her.

I could see a dream ticket with Obama/Hilliary, but separate… well, I’m still shopping. Obama, to me, reminds me of John Kerry; he doesn’t have the bite needed to be president, and Hilliary seems to me to a repeat of her husband’s presidency, and we need a fresh face on 1600 Penn Drive.

Last night really just showed me I am voting the right way. Hillary is the way to go. She is articulate, and she knows her stuff and she explained throughly all her plans and ideas for her presidency. Obama was good too, but when it came to the end, when asked about a possible Clinton/Obama or Obama/Clinton ticket, he really looked more like a vice president than the actual president. I would FULLY support a CLINTON/OBAMA ticket (in that order). I mean if you saw them last night it is MORE than obvious Hillary is mored than ready to lead this country, Obama still has some years to go and could get real experience from being a vice president.

“It’s took a Clinton to clean up after the first Bush, It will take another Clinton to clean up after the 2nd one”

on the surface this debate was a draw, which means unless you paid attention to little specifics, you would of left still undecided. lets face it, those who were hillary supporters will always stay hillary supporters and the same with obama…that’s glued

however, in a technical sense, obama WON this debate. here’s why. obama’s purpose for this debate were to gain more hispanic support, get a national open floor to speak on his policies in which some claim they never heard about, and seperate himself on him being right about iraq from hillary, and he achieved all three.

hillary did great, IMO, however she wasn’t going to gain more supporters and she didn’t lose any either.

the open field were the edwards supporters and the hispanic crowd. with obama speaking on how immigration being a scapegoat for blame of our defunct economy, he automatically gain a good percentage of the hispanic vote, as well as when hillary waffled on the iraq issue (why she has trouble admitting it was a mistake, i will never understand)…it helped obama as well with his entire stance on iraq as well as foriegn policies as a whole. alot of edwards supporters, even though they’re majority are white supporters, mainly went towards edwards because his policies of “change” and “hope” were almost identical with obama’s, but more practical. also most of them dislike hillary and were concern about obama’s experience. but, because obama really didn’t have any flaws with this debate, as well as, having the appearance of electibility, i suspect most of them are going to swing towards him…

overall, hillary did good except for the iraq portion, whereas obama achieved whut he was set out to do for this debate.

@ 19 - Completely agree, lol!!!

I personally think Hillary won last night, b/c she spoke thoroughly on why she is the better candidate, she also spoke on what relevant experience she has while she was first lady. Many of the American people that were on the fence, got the opportunity to hear her detailed plans for the ecnonomy! I really didn’t think Obama won, b/c he was rather vague on all the topics w/ the exception of the Iraq war. I think this was a prime example that as an orator or preacher, Obama is wonderful, but he really, in MY opinion doesn’t have what it takes to lead us.

But I gotta give Obama credit, he was definitely using the whole Kennedy endorsement and great decision maker to try to make it appear as though he was the better candidate. I thought that was interesting. I dunno about the rest of the American people but it’s gonna take a lot more than a one good decison and a Kennedy endorsement to convince me to vote for him…Clinton ‘08!

Obama and Edwards !!!!!! I think Edwards will endorse Obama because in the debates Edwards leaned toward Obama’s beliefs rather than HIllary’s. i think edwards is going to give obama extra delegates to keep the race tight. obama’s campaign personnel already said that they’re not going to pull a symbolic victory and was not planning to, they’re going to pull as many delegates as they can, hence why they’re mostly focusing on the midwestern states.

It was a great “debate” (lovefest? lol). I’m grateful to Edwards for dropping out because just having these two head to head brought clarity to the conversation.

I thought Hillary did a good job, but I am so happy that Obama’s positions on healthcare and Iraq were brought to the fore. It was clear that Obama’s healthcare plan is more well thought out and more realistic. How can you *penalize* people who elect not to get healthcare insurance? His plan makes much more sense.

Then, Obama just KILLED on the Iraq question — “Right On Day One” — that’s right! He was absolutely, 100% correct to draw the distinction between how he would be able to face against McCain vs. how Hillary would have to dance around the issue (just like she did last night — her answer on Iraq just got worse the more she spoke). It was so obvious that Obama would be the better Executive because he has shown more wisdom and better judgment than Hillary. His sentence about changing the mindset that got us in this war shows to me that he is head and shoulders above these spineless politicians that voted us into this mess.

I have never been more sure that Obama would be the candidate the Republicans would hate more to see in November. They are practically salivating over facing flip-flop Hillary.

Tuesday should be very interesting. Obama is gaining in the polls, and this thing may go all the way to the Conference in Colorado.

Barak Obama clearly won the debate to me. The more I watched Hillary the more she reminded me of slick Willie. That is what they used to call Bill Clinton. I watched her parse words just like he did on the “what the definition of is is…” I loved Bill Clinton as President but there were two sides to him. Politically he did well, personally he was a disaster. Just yesterday it was reported in the news that he brokered a questionable deal with a foreign government to get a friend of his a uranium contract. In exchange Bill was given $131 million dollars. These are things that he is doing with no office. I can’t imagine the mess he will get in if Hillary is President. Her talk about being the President and the one to make final decisions, she hasn’t shown me that she uses good judgment in making decisions. I cannot vote for her. Baraks won points for me. He is right people don’t have health care because it is often cost prohibitive. You don’t force people who don’t have the money to purchase something. I don’t want a law forcing me to do that, fining me if I don’t, or further more meddling in it all. I think Barak was right about immigration. Black people were not doing well in many areas long before immigration became an issue. If every illegal immigrant left this country, black people would still have mountains and hurdles to get on an equal playing field. I believe more in Barak’s ability to lift people up rather than Hillary’s desire to pander to “the poor people who need our help”. Voting for Hillary is a return to the 90’s. I don’t want to go back I want to move forward and want a forward looking President. His name is Barak Obama!

People who claim Obama does not have substance will have to cherry pick another reason to dislike him because he was clearly substantive last night . . . Black people who claim that Obama will not deal with AA issues need to understand that our issues are quality of life issues the same as for whites: childcare, health care, taxes, housing, education, rising gas prices, the war on terrorism, etc. . . . the point where Obama may lose AAs is on the issue of jobs that become scarce due to the flood of illegal immigrants because Obama’s stance is that (truthfully) there are urban areas where AA unemployement was already high and in those areas blaming illegals is scapegoating . . . Hillary did not convince me that she will be able to reign in her husband and I believe that he plans to the dominant co-president in her administration if she wins in November

I hate to say it, but I wished John Edwards dropped out sooner, the debate was so much better without him.

47.

Friday, February 1, 2008 /

The debate was civilized with no fireworks, which was nice. But I think Hillary danced around too many questions for me. She should have just came right out and said that she would NEVER pick Obama. That’s the truth. And Black folks really think that the Clintons are that in love with them, that she will pick this man. Not going to happen. She will pick Wesley Clark or Jim Webb or the governor of Ohio. It will be a White man, she has to win the South. I think the same for Obama. He will pick Jim Webb. Anyway, I thought the debate was good except for Clinton’s healthcare plan which MANDATES healthcare, which is ridiculous. People can’t pay the bills they have, let alone requiring that they pay for healthcare. “Universal healthcare” is Hillary’s way of solving a problem that will just create another problem. She has bad judgement but I like her as a person(sans her husband). Doesn’t mean I would ever vote for her, because I wouldn’t. I voted for Obama already. And I think he deserves to win. Enough pandering.

And Maxine Waters, I’m SMH at you lil’ lady! I thought you knew better. Bill Clinton enacted that THREE STRIKES in your damn state! AND the Rockafeller laws have affected your people(Cali Black ppl) more than anybody. So sad that you would think the uterus binds us, it does not.

48.

Friday, February 1, 2008 /

I only want to say this…
If you think I’m going to vote for a black man for the presidency because he’s black, you are definitely out of your mind. I am gong to vote for the candidate that shares my beliefs and opinions. And healthcare is very important to me. Hillary has been trying to get universal healthcare since 1993, when she was harassed and bullied into submission by the pharmaceutical and insurance lobbyist. Like she said, there is no way to achieve universal healthcare without making insurance mandatory, or people will still not buy it. Someone on here also said something about France paying half there income to taxes, and you know what, if it meant that my mother , grandmother, brother, father,, etc. could get the treatment they need for free, I would be willing to make that sacrifice. That is part of the problem with America being a capitalistic nation. We are so greedy and so self consumed that we don’t think about others, like God says we should. Anyway, I agree with Hillary on a lot of the issues. IMO Obama talks in circles and really doesn’t answer questions, or answers totally different questions with the same answer. As for his experience, I just haven’t seen what it is that he has done. This is his first term as Senator and he has missed about 40% of Senate votes due to the campaign (compared to 20% for Hillary). IMO, how can we count on him to do a great job as president when he can’t even perform his job as Senator? I know I’m going to get some backlash for this comment, but I had to put this out there.

49.

ANGEL_MINDED

@ 38

Hillary’s healthcare plan doesn’t ‘penalize’ individuals, Obama’s plan does. What happens when those who choose not to get healthcare, and have to go to the E.R? Millions of Americans will have to pay for that. So essentially Obama’s plan penalizes all Americans, for the few that refuse to be covered. Hillary’s plan is universal which means everyone WILL covered! It will be a small percentage of your income, not only that, but insurances won’t pick and choose what sicknesses will be covered (pre-existing conditions), and the insurance companies will no longer be able to charge sick ppl w/ high deductibles.

Now as for Iraq, I do agree that Obama made some legit points, but ONE good decision does not mean that he has GREAT JUDGEMENT on all issues.

Furthermore, Hillary’s explanation, in my opinion was not flawed. Just like she stated in the debate, the American people think that this choice was cut and dry…and it wasn’t. Let’s not forget that the president lied to the American people, and there was ‘evidence’ that supported that Saddam was buying WMD. She voted on what she believed to be the best choice. Not only that, but going back to that time, 84% of the American people supported her choice as well.

Hillary outlined her resume to a ‘T’ and she’s proved that she is the best person for the job. Obama stumbled on all issues w/ the exception of the Iraq war, Hillary was consistent and detailed all her plans. If Obama thinks that making that one decision for the war is enough to get him elected then he’s delusional.

And another thing, As far as her position on voting for the Iraq war, my question is this…Obama was not a member of the U.S. Senate nor privy to the same intelligence and information as were those Senators who had to make a choice and vote on what to do. Seventy or so Senators voted for it. Had Obama been there and faced with the same facts, who knows how he would have voted? We’ll never know. Remember, no one knew at the time that the intelligence was falsified or that Bush was such a liar and fanatic.

Oh - I forgot - the only thing that Obama has done is vote against the war; he didn’t push through the national children’s health care program, like Clinton, that my children have personally used during tough times. He hasn’t helped refugees in war-torn countries and has relationships in other countries already, like Clinton; he hasn’t attempted to push through an “unpopular” health care plan through a hostile congress/senate, like Clinton -while she was ONLY the first lady. In fact, while she was first lady, she changed the stereotype of that job. Look at the facts, people. Obama is only talk and doesn’t have a track record like Clinton, the stronger candidate

Obama said it right, it’s important to make the right decision from day one. Hillary shows that she voted for the war, voted yes then no for making drivers licenses legal for immigrants, so my question, what else is she confused about. She’s too easily persuaded IMO, too confused and way too trained/prepped by Bill Clinton. I was just wondering last night where in the world did all that experience go when she voted for the war? Why is she still trying to get a healthcare plan passed when it’s been knocked down since the early 1990’s? We need a change, and HILLARY is not it.

And I be out my head to vote for Hilary because she is a woman.Same thing if some says you voting for Barack because he’s black.I think we all can kill that discussion. But the only thing Hilary is talking about “her experience.” Talk is too cheap.I still haven’t seen any “35 years of experience.” Experience is nothing but a word.My dad use to work for the health care system for 29 years (he’s now teaching at a prestige campus), good person, loved his job but they didn’t want his “29 years of experience.” You can have all the experience in the world, but it doesn’t mean anything as I said before.Clitons are too much scandal.Seems like she running for Bill and not herself.

YOU CAN REALLY TELL SHE KNOWS HER STUFF AND HAS A CLEAR DIRECTION OF HOW TO MOVE THE COUNTRY INTO THE RIGHT DIRECTION..OBAMA WAS NOT IMPRESSIVE IN THE SLIGHTEST BIT AND TO ME DOESNT KNOW EXACTLY WHAT HE IS DOING.HE ALREADY ADMITTED AT THE END OF THE DEBATE THAT HE KNOWS HE IS GOING TO MAKE MISTAKES AND NEEDS PEOPLE IN HIS OFFICE THAT WILL TELL HIM NO AND HELP HIM RUN THINGS…WHAT A LOSER! HE IS SETTING HIMSELF UP FOR FAILURE TALKING LIKE THAT….I WAS NOT IMPRESSED….HE IS TOO OPTMISTIC ABOUT HIS VIEWS AND HILARY IS MORE REALISTIC..SHE IS DEFINATLEY THE ONE TO CHOOSE!!! Re: Hillary’s healthcare plan — it is fundamentally flawed and unrealistic. The funny thing is that people have mischaracterized Barack as being all inspiration and no substance, and here we have another prime example of how that is not the case. His healthcare plan is much more workable from Day One. There are good reasons why Hillary’s has continued to be rejected. It’s amazing that Billary has claimed that Barack’s campaign and his positions are “fairy-tale” like when what Hillary is basically suggesting is something that will never be a reality in a society like the United States. She will find herself not hitting the ground running, but instead setting up another bureaucratic and legislative nightmare. Good luck with that!

I’m not going to rehash my perspective on the Iraq issue and I think Hillary shouldn’t try to either. The plain fact is that she wasn’t courageous, wise or visionary enough to see it for what it was — a horrible mess of an idea — and yet she and Bill keep trying to spin her position on it. This is because she is an experienced politician — a wonk. Just let it be: it is what it is and she voted how she voted. Again, what good is experience without good judgment?

Please explain how mandating anything brings prices down.
If hillary mandates healthcare prices will go up even higher. Shes bought and paid for by insurance companies. Shes going to use her power and the state to force you to buy healthcare.

People like Ron Paul who advocate doctor patient relationships, FREE markets, getting rid of the FDA. Allowing imports from canada, buying insurance across state lines. That would bring costs down DRASTICALLY and defang insurance companies.

obama’s plan is people have a CHOICE if they want healthcare or not. how can you penalize someone if they are given a choice if they want it or not. all he’s saying that his plan is set up so it will be affordable for everyone….the only people who will get penalized is people who got children because he wants ONLY children to be mandated, because the don’t have that choice as an adult….hence, they’re the priority…and that’s clearly fair

whereas hillary’s plan is mandated for EVERYONE, therefore EVERYONE whether you like it or not are forced to pay a tax on healthcare and if you don’t then you’ll get penalized….

that’s why hillary’s plan never worked for the past 15 years

Those of you suggesting that voting for a candidate because they are black is a bad thing have unfortunately become brainwashed….Now of course we all know Clarence Thomas is black too and if he were running for the presidency I would not vote for him, however, Barack is Barack…he is a black man who was unruly and lost as a teen, who found his stride in organizing in the PJs in the Chi, who then went to law school - Harvard Law…who was the first black president of law review…who has his law professors on commercials stating he is their most brilliant pupil, who has been an illinois representative for years and US sentator as well…this is not just my brother…but the type of brother who we have waited for…who has not only his ear to the street…who understand the double-consicousness of being black in america…who is clear on the impact that race and class has on citizenship…but also has the type of cross over appeal and credentials to garner the respect of those who may not be able to relate to his existence, but can relate to his well thought out and realistic policy positions and plans to truly transform this nation.
For you Billary supporters - who keep talking about her years of experience and her policy expertise…please tell me how you feel or rationalize the following:
Under Bill Clinton Black incarceration rates tripled (http://www.finalcall.com/national/incarceration03-06-2001.htm)
Under Bill Clinton Rwandan genocide took place with NO intervention and the death toll of our brothas and systas on the continent neared 1 Million
Under Bill Clinton we intervened in Bosnia where suspected ethnic cleansing was taking place and set the tone for our non-milatary missions (read IRAQ) http://www.cnn.com/WORLD/...sis/9601/01-09/index.html
Under Bill Clinton Welfare to Work left millions of black children home alone when their mothers were forced to work for minimum wage, often being bused hours away from home, children left in daycares to maintain their housing benefits - is this the type of policy that we support? http://en.wikipedia.org/w..._and_Work_Opportunity_Act

I mean…if she wants to claim experience as being first lady of the country and state when bill was governor…then she has to claim the things he did that were outright horrible…he was NOT the first black president…he held the economy together and because of that black folks liked him, but he was not a friend to us policy wise. Let’s not forget NAFTA and the cause of the influx of immigrants from Mexico…http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_Free_Trade_Agreement

I wish people would stop with the “experience” line. Just because Hilary is 60 years and has 35 years of experience doesn’t mean it’s all GOOD experience. If you’ve looked at her record, she’s done some shady things….WALMART, the HSU guy…she’s flip flopped on several issues, and she only tells you what you wanna hear. Bush had experience and look where we all are now. Bill Clinton was young when he was elected in ‘92, yeah, he was a governor, and people might say that he had “experience”, but that didn’t stop him from creating that whole Whitewater issue, it didn’t stop him from getting impeached by the House of Rep., and he didn’t have enough experience to know that you shouldn’t F-around with the White House Interns. So, in my opinion, this Hilary “has more experience” crap is OVERRATED.

that’s interestinf that you said that, because obama himself at the debates had the balls to say he want cabinet members that are brave enough to tell him “no”, because he knows that he’s not going to be right all the time

imagine hillary, or any canidate for that matter willing to say that they’re not perfect

Make more strict policies for health insurance companies so they dont eat your money

LMAO about Americans wanting ‘change’!

Yeah, Bush was all for change as well…LMFAO…it was a major ‘change’ from the Clinton Administration. Just b/c we’ve had the same families in office since 1988 doesn’t mean that there weren’t positive things happening…well I mean on the Clintons part…

I guess my point is, that ‘change’ is not always a good thing. In order to make any positive change you need EXPERIENCE! And if one more person asks what’s Hillary’s experience, I’m gonna direct you to last nights debate. Girl was on fiyahhhh!!! I’m sorry but she cannot be stopped…

I wacthed the debate last night and it made me real proud to be a registered Democrat. They were not only civil but classy compared to the previous night’s debate between the Republicans…totally shameful the way that occured. In my honest opinion John Mccain is going to get the Republican nomination and I think the Republicans are going to give Hillary all sorts of hell she will not be able to explain away.

They have nothing on Barack Obama, they’ll try to use the fact that he’s inexperienced, they may try to pull the he’s secretly a muslim terrorist but that won’t work. The majority of American people will see through that. Hillary has gone back on her word a couple of times. About two weeks ago when Obama admitted he’s a bit disorganized, she blasted him saying the next president of the USA needs to be organized and run the White House as a CEO would…then last night she said we don’t need a CEO president in office. Which one is it Hillary?

I really appreciate Hillary’s fight for universal health care but that’s a goal that is not attainable in the next four years. What’s going to happen when she gets in the White House and Republicans filibuster her bill for universal healthcare? I think people are forgetting it takes a majority vote to have this put into effect. Also, what is she going to do with the people who refuse to get healthcare? Fine them, jail them, what? She hasn’t cleared that up and Obama asked her to.

On the hand, Obama knows that a system cheap enough to buy into will make more sense to EVERYONE in congress therefore, getting it passes sooner and not later.

I think they both did very well in last night’s debate. I’m not sure who was the “winner” per se but I think they both stuck to the issues for the most part. At times Hillary seemed a little long winded but I understand she was just trying to elaborate on how she will put some of her policies into effect.

Obama did well also but I think he should have pushed his National Security and Economic policy a little more. He made sense when he explained why a five year freeze on interest rates will not be the best idea. Think about it. If you have a home loan right now at 12.5% which is rather high but this is the case for many Americans, if the rates are frozen and you want to refinance for a lower rate, because of the freeze that won’t be possible. Also, the banks are not going to agree with that but that’s not the point. Point is, it will hurt a lot of people who will try to get new loans and those who are trying to refinance into lower rates.

I honestly have to do more research into this matter about illegal immigrants getting drivers liscences…I’m not sure I agree with that but then again if they have a liscence and they commit a traffic crime atleast we’ll have some record of who they are. Besides, immigrants don’t come here to drive, they come here to work.

Yussef X, I agree that there a few differences in their policies but a key difference is their health care stance and their plans for economic growth.

3 Policy Differences Between Obama and Hillary (a lot to type, but there are certainly way more than 5):

1 - Civil Rights Policy and Enforcement as an Urgent Priority

Barack :specifically mentions and has a plan outlined to strengthen civil rights legislation enforcement and create equity in arenas such as pay, employment discrimination, racial profiling, sentencing disparities, and drug rehabilitation options.
http://www.barackobama.com/issues/civilrights/

Hillary: No mention of racial inequities on her issues platform

2 - Education:

Barack:
Quadruple funds for Headstart and Universal Pre-K
Address dropout crisis by passing legislation for funding programs that begin in middle-school aimed at keeping at risk (read black and latino and poor) youth in school
4K Tax credit for all americans for college
Require all schools to be accredited and enact teacher residency programs
http://www.barackobama.com/issues/education/

Hillary:
Invest heavily in Pre-K and Headstart
Cut the minority dropout rate in half. (no plan detailed)
3500 Tax credit for all americans for college
no mention of what to do with teachers
http://www.hillaryclinton.com/issues/education/

3 - Poverty
Barack:
Improve transportation from cities to suburbs (where jobs are)
Reduce crime recitivism by providing support programs for ex-offenders
Raise minimum wage
require jobs to grant all employees at least 7 paid sick days a year
create and fund affordable housing grants
Establish 20 promise neighborhoods that are high levels of poverty and crime and low levels of student academic achievement in cities across the nation. The Promise Neighborhoods will be modeled after the Harlem Children’s Zone, which provides a full network of services, including early childhood education, youth violence prevention efforts and after-school activities, to an entire neighborhood from birth to college.
http://www.barackobama.com/issues/poverty/

Hillary:
Supports a plan for poor rural americans - no general mention of what she will do combat poverty on her website. She does however have a plan for middle-class americans…link provided as well
http://www.hillaryclinton.com/issues/rural/
http://www.hillaryclinton.com/issues/middleclass

Please check out their issues they have identified as important. You will find that clearly one candidate includes you and your families and the other…well just doesn’t.

Yussef X , I think the question now is who can beat John Mccain?

I doubt it will be Ron Paul (sorry), but I think Hillary or Obama will give him a good run for his money. And that was also the underlining theme from last night.

I wouldn’t have to much of a problem if a Republican won the White House but not Mccain. He’s practically Bush III. Staying in Iraq as long as it takes…100 years? I’m baffled as to why he’s even leading in the Republican campaign right now. I think there is a clear distinction between Obama and Mccain but the distinction gets fuzzy with Hillary next to Mccain.

I would also take a close listen to what conservative tv and radio is saying. For some reason they don’t mind getting Hillary. I wonder if that’s because the campaign killers will come out and expose some things that aren’t to clear about Hillary. I was so excited when she first decided to run for president then Obama came and swept me away, lol! Just kidding…I’m making an educated decision for voting for Barack Obama!

For all of you who are saying illegal immigrants don’t take away American jobs, you are living a lie. Please go to any major city, New York, DC, Los Angeles, Chicago, etc. you will see so many illegals, on welfare now because they had kids here. Working part-time, but paying half the cost of rent and food because they are on welfare. While hard working middleclass citizens are paying for them. That shit is ridiculous and they shouldn’t have a driver’s license either. If you’re going to do that then they need to get deported back to where they came from. Obama doesn’t have a plan on immigration reform; he says “just give them a license”. At least Hillary say’s they need to work toward becoming legal and pay a fine. I wanted to curse at Obama when he said that crap last night, and it looks like some of you are brainwashed or maybe you’re illegals and this is so beneficial to you.

Fact is that most blacks in the United States live in and around urban areas. Those of us who do, understand the dire critical emergency it is that someone care about and put effort into these areas…here is Barack’s speach on urban america

Remarks of Senator Barack Obama: Changing the Odds for Urban America
Washington, DC | July 18, 2007
Watch the Complete Speech.

A speech on urban poverty given in Washington D.C. on July 18, 2007.; Barack; Obama; poverty; urban; A speech on urban poverty given in Washington D.C. on July 18, 2007. http://link.brightcove.co...nel.jsp?channel=353512430

It’s been four decades since Bobby Kennedy crouched in a shack along the Mississippi Delta and looked into the wide, listless eyes of a hungry child. Again and again he tried to talk to this child, but each time his efforts were met with only a blank stare of desperation. And when Kennedy turned to the reporters traveling with him, with tears in his eyes he asked a single question about poverty in America:

“How can a country like this allow it?”

Forty years later, we’re still asking that question. It echoes on the streets of Compton and Detroit, and throughout the mining towns of West Virginia. It lingers with every image we see of the 9th Ward and the rural Gulf Coast, where poverty thrived long before Katrina came ashore.

We stand not ten miles from the seat of power in the most affluent nation on Earth. Decisions are made on both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue that shape lives and set the course of history. With the stroke of a pen, billions are spent on programs and policies; on tax breaks for those who didn’t need them and a war that should’ve never been authorized and never been waged. Debates rage and accusations fly and at the end of each day, the petty sniping is what lights up the evening news.

And yet here, on the other side of the river, every other child in Anacostia lives below the poverty line. Too many do not graduate and too many more do not find work. Some join gangs, and others fall to their gunfire.

The streets here are close to our capital, but far from the people it represents. These Americans cannot hire lobbyists to roam the halls of Congress on their behalf, and they cannot write thousand-dollar campaign checks to make their voices heard. They suffer most from a politics that has been tipped in favor of those with the most money, and influence, and power.

How can a country like this allow it?

No matter how many times it’s asked or what the circumstances are, the most American answer I can think of to that question is two words:

“We can’t.”

We can’t allow this kind of suffering and hopelessness to exist in our country. We can’t afford to lose a generation of tomorrow’s doctors and scientists and teachers to poverty. We can make excuses for it or we can fight about it or we can ignore poverty altogether, but as long as it’s here it will always be a betrayal of the ideals we hold as Americans. It’s not who we are.

In this country - of all countries - no child’s destiny should be determined before he takes his first step. No little girl’s future should be confined to the neighborhood she was born into. Our government cannot guarantee success and happiness in life, but what we can do as a nation is to ensure that every American who wants to work is prepared to work, able to find a job, and able to stay out of poverty. What we can do is make our neighborhoods whole again. What we can do is retire the phrase “working poor” in our time. That’s what we can do, because that’s who we are.

The challenge is greater than it has been in generations, but that’s all the more reason for this generation to act. One in every eight Americans now lives in poverty, a rate that has nearly doubled since 1980. That’s an income of about $20,000 a year for a family of four. One in three Americans - one in every three - is now classified as low-income. That’s $40,000 a year for a family of four.

Today’s economy has made it easier to fall into poverty. The fall is often more precipitous and more permanent than ever before. You used to be able to find a good job without a degree from college or even high school. Today that’s nearly impossible. You used to be able to count on your job to be there for your entire life. Today almost any job can be shipped overseas in an instant.

The jobs that remain are paying less and offering fewer benefits, as employers have succeeded in busting up unions and cutting back on health care and pensions to stay competitive with the companies abroad that are paying their workers next to nothing.

Every American is vulnerable to the insecurities and anxieties of this new economy. And that’s why the single most important focus of my economic agenda as President will be to pursue policies that create jobs and make work pay.

This means investing in education from early childhood through college, so our workers are ready to compete with any workers for the best jobs the world has to offer. It means investing more in research, science, and technology so that those new jobs and those new industries are created right here in America. And while we can’t stop every job from going overseas, we can stop giving tax breaks to the companies who send them there and start giving them to companies who create jobs at home.

We can also start making sure these jobs keep folks out of poverty. When I’m President, I will raise the minimum wage and make it a living wage by making sure that it rises every time the cost of living does. I’ll start letting our unions do what they do best again - organize our workers and lift up our middle-class. And I’ll finally make sure every American has affordable health care that stays with you no matter what happens by passing my plan to provide universal coverage and cut the cost of health care by up to $2500 per family.

All of these policies will give more families a chance to grab hold of the ladder to middle-class security, and they’ll make the climb a little easier.

But poverty is not just a function of simple economics. It’s also a matter of where you live. There are vast swaths of rural America and block after block in our cities where poverty is not just a crisis that hits pocketbooks, but a disease that infects every corner of the community. I will be outlining my rural agenda in the coming weeks, but today I want to talk about what we can do as a nation to combat the poverty that persists in our cities.

This kind of poverty is not an issue I just discovered for the purposes of a campaign; it is the cause that led me to a life of public service almost twenty-five years ago.

I was just two years out of college when I first moved to the South Side of Chicago to become a community organizer. I was hired by a group of churches that were trying to deal with steel plant closures that had devastated the surrounding neighborhoods. Everywhere you looked, businesses were boarded up and schools were crumbling and teenagers were standing aimlessly on street corners, without jobs and without hope.

What’s most overwhelming about urban poverty is that it’s so difficult to escape - it’s isolating and it’s everywhere. If you are an African-American child unlucky enough to be born into one of these neighborhoods, you are most likely to start life hungry or malnourished. You are less likely to start with a father in your household, and if he is there, there’s a fifty-fifty chance that he never finished high school and the same chance he doesn’t have a job. Your school isn’t likely to have the right books or the best teachers. You’re more likely to encounter gang-activities than after-school activities. And if you can’t find a job because the most successful businessman in your neighborhood is a drug dealer, you’re more likely to join that gang yourself. Opportunity is scarce, role models are few, and there is little contact with the normalcy of life outside those streets.

What you learn when you spend your time in these neighborhoods trying to solve these problems is that there are no easy solutions and no perfect arguments. And you come to understand that for the last four decades, both ends of the political spectrum have been talking past one another.

It’s true that there were many effective programs that emerged from Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty. But there were also some ineffective programs that were defended anyway, as well as an inability of some on the left to acknowledge that the problems of absent fathers or persistent crime were indeed problems that needed to be addressed.

The right has often seized on these failings as proof that the government can’t and shouldn’t do a thing about poverty - that it is a result of individual moral failings and cultural pathologies and so we should just sit back and let these cities fend for themselves. And so Ronald Reagan launched his assault on welfare queens, and George Bush spent the last six years slashing programs to combat poverty, and job training, and substance abuse, and child abuse.

Well, we know that’s not the answer. When you’re in these neighborhoods, you can see what a difference it makes to have a government that cares. You can see what a free lunch program does for a hungry child. You can see what a little extra money from an earned income tax credit does for a family that’s struggling. You can see what prenatal care does for the health of a mother and a newborn. So don’t tell me there’s no role for government in lifting up our cities.

But you can also see what a difference it makes when people start caring for themselves. It makes a difference when a father realizes that responsibility does not end at conception; when he understands that what makes you a man is not the ability to have a child but the courage to raise one. It makes a difference when a parent turns off the TV once in awhile, puts away the video games, and starts reading to their child, and getting involved in his education. It makes a difference when we realize that a child who shoots another child has a hole in his heart that no government can fill. That makes a difference.

So there are no easy answers and perfect arguments. As Dr. King said, it is not either-or, it is both-and. Hope is not found in any single ideology - an insistence on doing the same thing with the same result year after year.

Hope is found in what works. In those South Side neighborhoods, hope was found in the after school programs we created, and the job training programs we put together, and the organizing skills we taught residents so that they could stand up to a government that wasn’t standing up for them. Hope is found here at THEARC, where you’ve provided thousands of children with shelter from the streets and a home away from home. And if you travel a few hours north of here, you will find hope amid ninety-seven neighborhood blocks in the heart of Harlem.

This is the home of the Harlem Children’s Zone - an all-encompassing, all-hands-on-deck anti-poverty effort that is literally saving a generation of children in a neighborhood where they were never supposed to have a chance.

The philosophy behind the project is simple - if poverty is a disease that infects an entire community in the form of unemployment and violence; failing schools and broken homes, then we can’t just treat those symptoms in isolation. We have to heal that entire community. And we have to focus on what actually works.

If you’re a child who’s born in the Harlem Children’s Zone, you start life differently than other inner-city children. Your parents probably went to what they call ” Baby College”, a place where they received counseling on how to care for newborns and what to expect in those first months. You start school right away, because there’s early childhood education. When your parents are at work, you have a safe place to play and learn, because there’s child care, and after school programs, even in the summer. There are innovative charter schools to attend. There’s free medical services that offer care when you’re sick and preventive services to stay healthy. There’s affordable, good food available so you’re not malnourished. There are job counselors and financial counselors. There’s technology training and crime prevention.

You don’t just sign up for this program; you’re actively recruited for it, because the idea is that if everyone is involved, and no one slips through the cracks, then you really can change an entire community. Geoffrey Canada, the program’s inspirational, innovative founder, put it best - instead of helping some kids beat the odds, the Harlem Children’s Zone is actually changing the odds altogether.

And it’s working. Parents in Harlem are actually reading more to their children. Their kids are staying in school and passing statewide tests at higher rates than other children in New York City. They’re going to college in a place where it was once unheard of. They’ve even placed third at a national chess championship.

So we know this works. And if we know it works, there’s no reason this program should stop at the end of those blocks in Harlem. It’s time to change the odds for neighborhoods all across America. And that’s why when I’m President, the first part of my plan to combat urban poverty will be to replicate the Harlem Children’s Zone in twenty cities across the country. We’ll train staff, we’ll have them draw up detailed plans with attainable goals, and the federal government will provide half of the funding for each city, with the rest coming from philanthropies and businesses.

Now, how much will this cost? I’ll be honest - it can’t be done on the cheap. It will cost a few billion dollars a year. We won’t just spend the money because we can - every step these cities take will be evaluated, and if certain plans or programs aren’t working, we will stop them and try something else.

But we will find the money to do this because we can’t afford not to. Dr. King once remarked that if we can find the money to put a man on the moon, then we can find the money to put a man on his own two feet. There’s no reason we should be spending tens of thousands of dollars a year to imprison one of these kids when they turn eighteen when we could be spending $3,500 to turn their lives around with this program. And to really put it in perspective, think of it this way. The Harlem Children’s Zone is saving a generation of children for $46 million a year. That’s about what the war in Iraq costs American taxpayers every four hours.

So let’s invest this money. Let’s change the odds in urban America by focusing on what works.

The second part of my plan will do this by providing families the support they need to raise their children. I’ll pass the plan I outlined last year that will provide more financial support to fathers who make the responsible choice to help raise their children and crack down on the fathers who don’t. And we’ll help new mothers with their new responsibilities by expanding a pioneering program known as the Nurse-Family Partnership that offers home visits by trained registered nurses to low-income mothers and mothers-to-be.

This program has been proven to reduce childhood injuries, unintended pregnancies, and the use of welfare and food stamps. It’s increased father involvement, women’s employment, and children’s school readiness. It’s produced more than $28,000 in net savings for every high-risk family enrolled in the program. It works, and I’ll expand the program to 570,000 first-time mothers each year.

The third part of my plan for urban America is to help people find work and make that work pay.

I will invest $1 billion over five years in innovative transitional jobs programs that have been highly successful at placing the unemployed into temporary jobs and then training them for permanent ones. People in these programs get the chance to work in a community service-type job, earn a paycheck every week, and learn the skills they need for gainful employment. And by leaving with references and a resume, often times they find that employment.

Still, even for those workers who do find a permanent job, many times there’s no way for them to advance their careers once they’re in those jobs. That’s why we’ll also work with community organizations and businesses to create career pathways that provide workers with the additional skills and training they need to earn more money. And we’ll make sure that public transportation is both available and affordable for low-income workers, because no one should be denied work in this country because they can’t get there.

To make work pay, I will also triple the Earned Income Tax Credit for full-time workers making the minimum wage. This is one of the most successful anti-poverty programs in history and lifts nearly 5 million Americans out of poverty every year. I was able to expand this program when I was a state Senator in Illinois, and as President I’ll do it again.

The fourth part of my plan will be to help bring businesses back to our inner-cities. A long time ago, this country created a World Bank that has helped spur economic development in some of the world’s poorest regions. I think it’s about time we had something like that right here in America. Less than one percent of the $250 billion in venture capital that’s invested each year goes to minority businesses that are trying to breathe life into our cities. This has to change.

When I’m President, I’ll make sure that every community has the access to the capital and resources it needs to create a stronger business climate by providing more loans to small businesses and setting up the financial institutions that can help get them started. I’ll also create a national network of business incubators, which are local services that help first-time business owners design their business plans, find the best location, and receive expert advice on how to run their businesses whenever they need it. And I will take steps to help close the digital divide and increase internet access for cities so that urban America is just as connected as the rest of America.

The final part of my plan to change the odds in our cities will be to ensure that more Americans have access to safe, affordable housing. As President, I’ll create an Affordable Housing Trust Fund that would add as many as 112,000 new affordable units in mixed income neighborhoods. We’ll also do more to protect homeowners from mortgage fraud and subprime lending by passing my plan to provide counseling to tenants, homeowners, and other consumers so they get the advice and guidance they need before buying a house and support if they get in to trouble down the road. And we will crack down on mortgage professionals found guilty of fraud by increasing enforcement and creating new criminal penalties.

What this agenda to combat urban poverty attempts to do is not easy, and it will not happen overnight. Changing the odds in our cities will require humility in what we can accomplish and patience with our progress. But most importantly, it will require the sustained commitment of the President of the United States, and that is why I will also appoint a new director of Urban Policy who will cut through the disorganized bureaucracy that currently exists and report directly to me on how these efforts are going; on what’s working and what’s not.

Because in the end, hope is found in what works.

The moral question about poverty in America - How can a country like this allow it? - has an easy answer: we can’t. The political question that follows - What do we do about it? - has always been more difficult. But now that we’re finally seeing the beginnings of an answer, this country has an obligation to keep trying.

The idea for the Harlem Children’s Zone began with a list. It was a waiting list that Geoffrey Canada kept of all the children who couldn’t get into his program back when it was just a few blocks wide. It was 500 people long. And one day he looked at that list and thought, why shouldn’t those 500 kids get the same chance in life as the 500 who were already in the program? Why not expand it to include those 500? Why not 5000? Why not?

And that, of course, is the final question about poverty in America. It’s the hopeful one that Bobby Kennedy was also famous for asking. Why not? It leaves the cynics without an answer, and it calls on the rest of us to get to work. I will be doing exactly that from the first day I become your President, and I ask you all to join me in getting it done. Thank you.

Concrete loop is far from fair and balanced when they completly leave out the republicans.

The implication is we arent smart enough to pick who is in our personal interests or who has the best policies for our people. So here, we will choose the socialist/welfare kings on the democratic side who like to keep us on welfare and public housing so we never progress and start buying up real estate in their lily white communities.

Go to the south. In places where there are many black stores, banks and so on like raleigh NC and maryland , they are republicans. Why? Because at the core republicans are for freedom, low taxes, property rights sound currency. Democrats want to take wealth from the middle class and pay for social programs for the poor that dont help them. With core republican prinicples there would be a lot more prosperity and the people who get left behind would be few, and since everyone would be better off charity could take care of them and local communities who know whats best for its people rather than DC throwing money at them,

I HATE WHEN PEOPLE WHO DON’T KNOW, TALK LIKE THEY KNOW.

THEY ARE ABOUT 10 STATES IF I’M ACCURATE THAT ALLOW PEOPLE TO HAVE LICENSES WITHOUT PROVING CITIZENSHIP. MY ISSUE WITH HILLARY IS, I DON’T WANT PEOPLE DOING HIT AND RUNS …BECAUSE THEY ARE AFRAID OF BEING DEPORTED. Anybody that votes for Hillary and her unsuccessful and unrealistic health care plan is really naive.

I could care less what anyone else thinks, but if they start automatically deducting from my check, which they are already doing enough of, I would through a damn fit, and I believe anyone else in my position would also.

I am one of those people that barely goes to the hospital, but work in a medical office. I see it everyday, some would rather pay out of pocket than to get insurance.

So, i ask you, what type of country do we live in when it’s mandatory to get something you don’t want at the moment. Like Barack said, he believes every American wants insurance, and if it was affordable we would get it.

This among other things that she has said or done makes me question her experience.

If we vote hillary into the Whitehouse I feel sad for us Americans. Honestly, I don’t care who the republican nominee is, I will vote for them before voting for her. She can not be trusted.

And what about making tuition affordable, I have yet to hear her say anything about this.

Flylike, I appreciate you posting that link. I will definitley read the entire speech.

Yusef X, I think you will have to ask President Bush that question. I honestly don’t building fences or walls will help. I think we need to dig deeper and ask what is causing this surge of illegal immigrants to cross the border illegaly. But I think we already know the answer to that. Mexico is not taking care of their own while America seems to be the land paved with gold which we know is not the case right now, but compared to their situation America seems to have a lot more to offer.

Why is it when Cubans come over we give them political amnesty and create a path to citizenship but Mexicans and Haitians get the other not-so-pleasent end of the stick?

I can understand your concern about the over 140 bases around the world but ever since World War II that’s how it has to be in order to react quickly and effectively. I do know that we do not need another permanent base in Iraq.

Let the Iraqis work it out, because as long as we support Israel there will never be peace in the Middle East. Let’s shift focus to upholing civil liberties around the world and at home. Let’s wage a war on poverty now that’s some real homegrown terrorism.

I agree with your comment in # 74, but this Ron Paul nonsense is exactly that, nonsense. Give it a rest already. He has an ice cube’s chance in hell of winning the election for the President of the United States. Obama will proabably be the VP, but Hillary will be president. I agree also that most of the public are easy dupes that deserve to be spoken down to. Any buffoon that falls for the same okey-doke everytime deserves nothing but disdain. In regards to the “V chip” and the lineage of Obama, brother you should try to keep it simple and steer clear of information like that unless you must bring it out. Most people believe the media hype machine and everything that they see on television. Obama’s relation to Cheney and Bush’s relation to John Kerry are documented fact that has been printed and can be referenced on genealogical websites and mainstream newspapers and publications. I saw it in the New York Post, lol. If it’s conspiracy, then all mainstream news is conspiracy. The seed of “conspiracy” is the stupidity and incredulity of the masses. Then the same negroes that claim everything outside their realm of understanding is a “conspiracy” are at a loss for words and thoughts when real things get exposed, i.e. Hurricane Katrina and the Haitian dirt cookies.

Ms. Nene

Friday, February 1, 2008 /

As a person studying medicine and also public health, Hillary Clinton plan is very flawed. By forcing everyone to have health insurance that means the insurance companies can charge whatever they want and everybody has to pay it by law; therefore she is making insurance companies richer than what they are already. Obama’s plan, on the other hand which is to lower health care to an affordable rate, in order effective would make a lot of pharmaceutical ceo’s and health insurance executives have to lose their million dollars in order to make this possible. Because the extra costs were paying for insurance and medicine does not go to making the drug or to the doctor, nurse, or hospital; that money goes to health insurance ceos and pharmaceutical company ceos pockets. In fact, doctors don’t even make as much as they used because of insurance companies. So her plan, in essence, gives more money to insurance companies.

173.

Yusef X

Friday, February 1, 2008 /

Very Well said NENE you must have an understanding of freemarkets

her plan is corporate welfare

Obamas is also to an extent

but the only way to eliminate the power of insurance companies is health savings accounts. Which will mean you set aside money and then use it when you need to but in the meantime your not paying for something your not using. By eliminating managed care , the FDA, cross state boundaries. Import from canada and so on. All of those things would have insurance companies scrambling for your business and no the other way around. Mandates always raise costs. New hampshire has the cheapest car insurance in the country because its not mandated, meaning the companies HAVE to compete for the lowest cost in order to get business.

174.

Ms. Nene

Friday, February 1, 2008 /

@ Yusef, People are getting excited saying that she is going to make everyone health insurance and universal health care across the board. What she is not saying is you still have to pay for it and insurance companies can charge what they want for a monthly premium and you still have to pay it because your mandated by law. So who is really being helped by this us or the insurance company, she used to be a corporate lawyer don’t get it twisted.

The whole insurance issue is just a mess within itself mandated healthcare does not help with skyrocketing deductables , complicated referal programs, useless appeal systems , in-netwok providers,out-network providers, the share of cost, and the most upseting to most people prescription formularies . People cannot afford to get sick or maintain health, and lord help you if you have a chronic disease. And alot of doctors are no better , do you know how many pharmacetical sales reps frequent the dr’s offices and pharmacies? most pharmacies dont even want the reps near them , because its against ethics, not that it hasn’t been done before just that one mail order pharmacy got caught giving customer incentives for requesting a certain prouct form their doctoer and got spanked by the Federal Government , so now theres this big watchdog group and all this ethics training LOL,but alot of docotors allow the reps to lavish them with gifts beyond just pens and labled sticky notes, I’ve seen people pay copays of $800.00 (yes a copay) for a medication that was no more effective for her ailment than chewing gum !

Yusef X

Look at Ron Pauls position on healthcare

The federal government decided long ago that it knew how to manage your health care better than you and replaced personal responsibility and accountability with a system that puts corporate interests first. Our free market health care system that was once the envy of the world became a federally-managed disaster.

Few people realize that Congress forced Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) on us. HMOs rose to prominence through federal legislation, incentives, and coercion.

Now, the Food and Drug Administration’s bias toward large pharmaceutical companies enlarges their power, limits treatment options, and drives consumers to seek Canadian medicines. Regulations from D.C. make it virtually impossible for small business owners to cover their employees. The unemployed often cannot afford insurance, meaning those who need basic medical attention overcrowd emergency rooms and drive up premiums.

The federal government will not suddenly become efficient managers if universal health care is instituted. Government health care only means long waiting periods, lack of choice, poor quality, and frustration. Many Canadians, fed up with socialized medicine, come to the U.S. in order to obtain care. Socialized medicine will not magically work here.

Health care should not be left up to HMOs, big drug companies, and government bureaucrats.

It is time to take back our health care. This is why I support:

* Making all medical expenses tax deductible.
* Eliminating federal regulations that discourage small businesses from providing coverage.
* Giving doctors the freedom to collectively negotiate with insurance companies and drive down the cost of medical care.
* Making every American eligible for a Health Savings Account (HSA), and removing the requirement that individuals must obtain a high-deductible insurance policy before opening an HSA.
* Reform licensure requirements so that pharmacists and nurses can perform some basic functions to increase access to care and lower costs.

By removing federal regulations, encouraging competition, and presenting real choices, we can make our health care system the envy of the world once again.

Obama 08

Saturday, February 2, 2008 /

Obama won last nights debate hands down. He spoke indept about his platform and vision for the country.

For those of you having difficulty understanding his healthcare plan it’s this simple. If you need healthcare it will be made affordable to you based on your income. If you are poor and are low income it’s free. If you have children under 18, they’re required to be covered. No one is turned away for prexisting conditions or because they can’t afford to pay. It’s that simple.

Hillary’s plan mandates that everyone by law sign up for health insurance and they will recieved discount rates based on their income in the form on Tax Credits. If you do not sign up, you will be breaking the law and can be fined.

Obama believes people aren’t signing up for healthcare, because they can’t afford it, not because they aren’t being forced too and I agree. Most people who don’t have healthcare want it but can’t afford it. If you make it affordable to them and don’t turn them away for prexisting conditions than you have healthcare for everyone. Obama has already helped deliver healthcare to Illionios children so I rather go with the person who got it right the first time.

Also, please understand that Hillary’s plan is not Universal Healthcare like you see in Canada or France or England. In those countries healthcare is free and everyone pays through their taxes. Both of these plans require some kind of individual contribution. Neither of these plans provide that.

People who continue to say that Obama has no substance are just not reading his platform or his record. If you allow yourself to be educated by CNN and MSNBC than you will never make smart decisions in the voting booth. Read the candidates platforms, call their campaign offices and ask questions, find the volunteers in your area and ask them for information. I’m conviced that if people were actually doing that they would know that Obama’s the best choice. Of all the candidates he is the one who has actually spoke most about the issues and he is the only candidate that actually has a genuine philosphy on how to run government from the bottom up. His campaign alone is a testiment to that. He’s mobilized and organized more grassroot activism and donations than any compaign in history. Thats a model for how he plan’s to govern.

If you’ll are prepared to allow a dynasty to continue - ok. But I’m ready for a new direction with a proven leader who is the most innovative and principled candidate the Democratic party has offered for years.

@ Yussef, if you believe all of problems are solved by the free markets than you are out of your mind. The free market and capatalism unchecked have been two of the greatest perpetuators of the striking disparities we see in our world today. If you need any indication for why the repbulican party and their backwards economic theory, focused on dergulation and tax incentives doesn’t work, just look are the state of our economy right now. The republican party had proven time and time again to be worse at growing an economy than anyone. And if the Bush error is any indication - they also have proven to spend more, create a bigger deficit and make governement bigger.

What I want is an Obama - Bloomberg ticket. Or even Obama - Edwards. If Hilary wins the nom, I’m voting for the most bearable person for another four years — which is certainly not her. This country is more than ready for a new beginning.
