POLITICS: LEWIS SWITCHES TEAMS / BLOOMBERG RUNNING? / BUSH ON ECONOMY

Thursday, February 28, 2008

(Photo: John Nowak for The New York Times)

One of the most prominent civil rights leaders of the 1960s has dropped support for Sen. Hillary Clinton in favor of Sen. Barack Obama.

On Wednesday, Rep. John Lewis released a statement saying Obama’s campaign “represents the beginning of a new movement in American political history” and that he wants “to be on the side of the people.”

“After taking some time for serious reflection on this issue, I have decided that when I cast my vote as a superdelegate at the Democratic convention, it is my duty…to express the will of the people,” according to the statement.

Lewis is the most prominent black leader to defect from Clinton’s campaign in the face of near-unanimous black support of Obama.

During a satellite interview after being questioned about Lewis’s statement, Clinton said:

“I understand he’s been under tremendous pressure. He’s been my friend. He will always be my friend. At the end of the day it’s not about who is supporting us, it’s about what we’re presenting, what our positions are, what our experiences and qualifications are and I think that voters are going to decide.”

Obama released a statement saying, “John Lewis is an American hero and a giant of the Civil Rights Movement, and I am deeply honored to have his support.”

BLOOMBERG RUNNING?

(Photo: Chip East/Reuters)

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in an opinion article in Thursday’s New York Times that he has decided not to join the presidential race.

“I listened carefully to those who encouraged me to run, but I am not and will not be a candidate for president.”

Bloomberg told reporters Wednesday, “I’m not a candidate for president of the United States,” which he used many times and many believed still allowed a possible presidential run by the former lifelong Democrat who ran on the Republican ballot to win the mayoral election in 2001.

Bloomberg gave no reason as to why he decided not to run and was critical of both the Republican and Democratic contenders, noting they appeared afraid to “level with” voters on important issues such as trade, immigration and the environment.

“I believe that an independent approach to these issues is essential to governing our nation and that an independent can win the presidency,” he wrote. “I have watched this campaign unfold, and I am hopeful that the current campaigns can rise to the challenge by offering truly independent leadership.

Although he did not endorse anyone, Bloomberg said he would support a candidate who “takes an independent, nonpartisan approach and embraces practical solutions that challenge party orthodoxy. I’ll join others in helping that candidate win the White House,” he said.

BUSH: “NOT IN RECESSION”

(Photo: Larry Downing/Reuters)

In an interview with American Urban Radio Networks on Tuesday, President George W. Bush said the economy was not in a recession and that he believed it would not fall into a downturn.

“We’re not in a recession, I don’t think we will go in a recession. We’re in a slowdown, and there’s a difference.”

Bush’s comments came on the same day that economic reports showed that U.S. consumer confidence slumped to its worst in five years.

Bush said, “No question there’s softening now,” but added he was confident in the resiliency of the economy.

Bush has signed into law a $152 billion stimulus package of tax rebates and business incentives aimed at warding off a recession.

I wrote some things on a prior political thread that made some ppl think that I believe change is not possible. On the contrary I believe change is possible but the only way we can accomplish this is not through a new leader, but simply by burning it all down, repenting and starting from scratch. As the saying goes a hardened gangsta lives by the gun, so more than likely he will die by the gun, but with that being said there is a period in between when the gangsta prospers off of the criminal acts he or she may commits. If one takes the focus off of the microcosm and put it on the macrocosm and see America as the hardened gangsta, the same applies, fatal ending and all. We as a ppl need to realize that the country spilled too much blood to be successful and as harsh as that may sound, we all know this to be true. Genocide of many Native American peoples and numerous atrocities against blacks and other ethnic groups have been committed to make this country what is in today. Unfortunately the descendants who live here now want America to make it, but our ancestors and the ancestors of the those ppls that were brutalized cursed this country and quite possibly its ultimate dissolution is their God-given reparations. If we continue to look for freedom in a democracy or any form of mans government then we will continue to be slaves.

Bush STFU what is the difference between a recession and a slowdown? He is not broke by any means so he can’t relate.

John Lewis who pressured him Hillary? He probably saw through her bull.

I think there should be a cutoff of when you can run for President or is there?

Please step back and let Elmer Fudd and Obama battle it out.” But now it’s obvious that he has clearly came to his senses and decided to step his old wrickled ass down. GOOD JOB! WE DON’T NEED YOU!

I don’t believe a damn thing that comes out of President Bush’s mouth. He has fucked up our country and he needs to sit under a damn rock until January 2009. FUCK YOU, SHUT THE FUCK UP!

John lewis is a coward. he was given super delegate status because of who he is. No to represent himself as a delegate of his district. His district is not being disenfranchised. they are being rightfully represented. Since everyone is making such a big fuss about this I imagine that Senators Kerry and Kennedy and Governer Deval Patrick will switch over to Hillary’s camp since ther constituents overwhelmingly voted for Hillary. and what about the superdelegates who are not in congress what constituents should they represent?

I LOVE how everyone thinks that just because someone Black and prominent (John Lewis or Oprah) chooses to support Barack, that the decision MUST be genuine. I believe #20 said it best: “following their minds and not their [cliques].” Hilarious! If anyone wants to deny the possibility of their alignment with Black voters being decided out of an interest in career longevity, then fine. I won’t delude myself so quickly.

I say all this because some classmates and I were discussing just yesterday the function of delegates (read: people who - motives and integrity aside - at least have a more sound base of knowledge and informed political lens than the average voter), and how it is their responsibility to make informed decisions even counter to the whim of the people, IF they have reason to believe that the people’s decision will be to their own detriment. It would be hard to convince me that John Lewis doesn’t know that.

Make no mistake, John Lewis knows exactly why he WAS supporting Hillary, and if he says he wishes to express the will of the people, he has opinions about the thought process on which that will is based. He would be crucified if he, once a civil rights LEADER, didn’t actively support the first real Black candidate for the Presidency of these United States, and he knows that as well. Politics, politics.

I liked Bill Clinton as a president but didn’t he that same approach with Kim Jong II and N. Korea that Obama is trying to say he will take with N. Korea and the rest of the world. It’s extremely naive.
Learn from your mistakes people. N. Korea just took advantage of him and the U.S. and didn’t bother even complying with U.S. regulations. Bill attempting to normalize diplomatic relations with N. Korea and even offered aide to N. Korea. Meanwhile Kim Jong II was producing weapons grade plutonium and secretly tryin gto enrich uranium. I think in foreign policy Obama is extremely naive to the reality of the world and obviously has not learned from Clinton’s mistakes. However, I think Bill learned from his mistakes and realized it just doesn’t work like that in the real world no matter how much you want to ‘change’ and negotatiate with adversaries.
I believe Hillary also learned a lot from Bill’s mistakes evidenced by her responses in debates that she would only met and negotiate with preconditions and some leaders are not worth meeting with given their history and the history of those particular countries. Obama is just naive about domestic and foreign policy and in particular how to deal with U.S. adversaries. To me that is a clear indication that he is not ready to be president and that Hillary and McCain (seriously) are more prepared to be president. But then you know Americans never seem to learn from their mistakes or past history. For some odd reason people believe Obama can wave a magic wand over the world and everyone will sing Kumbya and be happy. This reality is Obama is not running for president he is running to lead a movement almost like a cult built on this false reality of hope and change. Change only comes over time and only through experience which clearly Obama does not have. The responses that Obama gives at times in regards to his foreign poilcy are downright scary including comments he made in several debates that he has no problem bombing Pakistan without cause. The media really needs to start questioning him hard on comments like this that could possibly lead to world wars and or leave the U.S. utterly defenseless and at the mercy of our adversaries. The media has done a terrible job at this and the democratic primaries continue to be an American Idol contest and not about the serious issues we face in this country.

27.

——————”bombing Pakistan without cause. ”Your statement is out of context!
——————So, if Hillary is not going to negotiate with enemies, then what does
——————Obama have to lose by trying?
——————While your’re calling everyone naive, you sit there with no plan,
——————rhyme or reason. People are tired of the same old dead, dry leaders!
——————And, I venture to say, you cannot predict how effective Obama will be
——————with America’s adversaries! You sound like George Bush Sr. when
——————Jesse Jackson flew home with the POWs. A great lack of faith…Sr!
——————I would rather see Obama wave a magic wand than to see Bush waving
——————the American flag covered with senseless blood stains from 18 yr. olds!
——————Do you remember Martin’s teaching about violence? Just in case you
——————-forgot, here’s a little song we grew up with that I’m sure you know:
——————-”I’m gonna lay down my burdens, down by the riverside…And, I ain’t
——————-gonna study war no more, study war no more, study war no mooore!
——————-Obama talked about Hillary driving the bus in a ditch and the next day
——————-a school bus tipped over filled with school children and a driver who had
——————-suppended license. So, maybe words are more powerful than some of
——————-you think! Hillary’s licenses are suspended!
——————–Let Obama try Diplomacy! Negotiate! Reasoning! Reconciliation!
——————-Submission! Obama has a special gift! More so than that Oval office
——————-hanky-panky of the Clintons! Or, the special interest of the Bush’s and
——————-McCains!

What is the purpose of the National Black Cacus? I thought it was a support system for Black politicians? if it’s not then what is their purpose?

Most of the black super delegets that are supporting the Clintons are either a) paying back a favor or 2) have been promissed something. I am not saying it’s wrong but it aint like they supporting her cause they think she is the best person for the job.

John Lewis made a smart move, if Hillary did get the nomination and lost in the general, when re-election came he would not get re-elected in his district because the people there would have been pissed. He got to look out for himself and his job.

John Lewis switched sides because he was probably getting death threats like the other congressmen and women have been receiving because of their support for Hillary. Democrats are not going to get good luck because of this whole BOGUS process that is going on. You know damn well Hillary Clinton is supposed to be our president this time. Obama should have waited to run in 2012 or 2016. He doesn’t have the experience to lead this country right now…with the mess that is going on we need someone who can get in there and clean up what Bush is leaving behind. Now is not the time for dreams of HOPE and CHANGE, hope and change aint doing shit for these high ass gas prices that are going up every min, and keeping ppl from losing their houses. We don’t have time for someone to grow into a position like Obama will need…as I see it Hillary is the only one for the job.

And Blacks voting based on race, is very dangerous and I don’t agree with it. Yes I would love to see in the future, a black man or women become president of US, but Obama is not ready. I know we want to make history…but at what cost?

How come African Americans can’t be voting for Barack based on issues? What are white people’s reason for voting for Barack? What diffrence dose it make if Barack runs now or in 4yrs? Where is he suppose to get this presidental “experience” from? Where do you get presidental experience from if you have never been president?Dose sleeping with a former president give you experience? If that’s the case dosn’t Monica Lewinsky (sp?) have experience? after all she did work in the white house on policy issues.

Robert Fulghum says it best…

“Imagination is stronger than knowledge — myth is more potent than history — dreams are more powerful than facts — hope always triumphs over experience — ”

Hillary and McCain are offering more of what has always and already been done and clearly not working –

VABABI, I think you made a very important point: Barack would have to GROW INTO the position, at least from the infrastructural lack he continues to present us.

To #32, I offer you this: How do companies select CEOs, if not by researching who in their field has brought his or her company increased revenues, reduced losses, and consistent forward mobility over time? Are head coaches not offered their positions based on their ability to raise player stats or win ratios while coaching defense or special teams? What about news anchors? Must they not prove their journalistic prowess as field reporters and researchers before landing a seat behind the desk?

Of course, it would make little sense - and be almost impossible - to only hire for top positions from a pool of people who have already served in that capacity. What IS commonly practiced is promoting people to leadership from proven track records. “Presidential experience”, then, would be a track record and strategic plan of presidential caliber, and I believe that’s what people who don’t support Barack are not seeing.

I’m curious though: what part of his plan draws you to him most? I really want to know; I ask everyone that.

I like Barack’s approach to health care much better, I like him, believe people want health care but just can’t afford it (at least here in CA). I know people who work and can’t afford health care if they had to purchase it now or even pay a fine, they would not survive of the income they have.

I was also turned off by Hillary saying she would provide health insurance to illegal immigrants ( she said this in the SC debate), I think we should get those who are natural or legal citizens insured before we start covering those who are not suppose to be here.

I don’t think she is anymore qualified than he is.

She also said that she would remove the troops in 60 days (don’t remember which debate but I know I and others, I have talk to heard her say it), I have no foreign policy experience and even I know you can’t take the troops out in 60 days. She has since changed her position on that (now saying that she would start removing troops in 60 days), but I know what I heard her say.

I don’t trust her, I don’t like the way she has been running her campaign and nothing will ever make me vote for her.

Also, since she is counting her first lady years as experience, it was her husband that signed into law the 3 strikes law in my state (CA), that law has so many AA men here serving 20 to 35 to life sentences on some of the most ridiculous crimes. Because of 3 strikes they have cut the education budget to build more jails. I understand people who commit crimes should do the time, but 3 strikes is designed to keep AA men down in this state. The government is abusing the 3 strikes law here.

I could go on and on but I have to get to class.
