I have a Latina co-worker and she informed me a while ago that Obama was going to lose in CA becuase of the lack of support from the Latino community. (I live in LA)I didn’t understand it and I still don’t…she was originally on the fence but ended up voting for Obama. She says that the Latino community would rather vote for Hilary than vote for a black man. It is really sad…I didnt’ believe her but the numbers should up and showed out this morning.

It’s funny because I lived in DC when the Latino community had the immigration march and their was two government officials there and one of them was Barack.
I personally think or rather hope they voted for Hilary because the familiarty of the name and not because of the race.

I just hope we don’t turn this into a Black on Brown issue. We don’t need to fight them with ignorance. as a latino who reads concreteloop on a daily basis, it is sad to see the number of generalizations being made by commentators. within every ethnic groups there exists different people. yes there are latinos that are racists, much like they exist in the black community. i think a lot of hillary’s latino support stems from 3 things: the familiarity of the clinton name, the fact that clinton has been endorsed by important latino figures (ie dolores huerta) and because she has courted the latino vote. clinton knows she needs them to win, especially when Obama has the black vote. i think that everyone should have trhe freedom to vote for whomever they see fit, we live in a democracy and therefore should not hold it against people for choosing who they feel is working for their interests.

Thank you so much for your input regarding the Latino vote. The ignorance many black people are showing about Latinos is disappointing. I happen to think there may be an element of racism, but I think it is far less than people are saying. The fact is that the Clintons *have* courted these voters for years and years and they are well known in the Latino community. Whether they have actually *done* anything for Latinos is another story, but it is not far-fetched to think that Latinos voted for the person they are more familiar with. The fact is that most of them had never heard of Obama 6 months ago, and yet he got 33% of their vote in California. That is NOT a bad showing.

Further, if we as black people don’t want to be put all in one monolithic box, then we shouldn’t do it to others. There are several different types of Latinos depending on where you live in the country, and there are also gender, class, and generational differences. If you don’t know what you’re talking about as you rant, you’re just showing your ignorance.

i will try my best to explain this. the first democrate to get 2,025( may be of by a couple) votes wins so far they finished caounting delegates in about 28 states not including the super delegates. from what im hearing on the news they both have about 840 delegates each. the super delegates are the officals that represent out states like the senators, state general, mayor and so on. they get to vote and thats how we will get the 2,025 delegates

Re: Hillary’s health care plan — if anything is a “fairy tale” it is this plan. There is a reason why it went down in flames when it was first proposed — it is highly unworkable! If she were to become President and put this in front of our legislature, it will be bogged down again and eventually tossed.

Hillary does NOT have all this experience “getting things done” in Washington as she is proclaiming. Her initiatives routinely fail because they are ill-conceived and not well thought out. This is something I see regularly in the media and it makes me scratch my head: lots of talking heads being called “experts” simply because they’ve been around for forever. A lot of them have shady backgrounds, questionable judgment, etc., but just because they’ve been politicians for forever, they are called experts. You can see the same thing on your own job. LOL!

I think Obama followed proper strategic protocol by going for white/upper class votes first, thus solidifying his legitimacy as a presidential candidate, since winning SC wasn’t a big surprise with Jesse doing it years prior. Now he has to backtrack and get the lower income/blue collar worker as well as targeting the Hispanic population. All feasible and within reach. A few months ago the Black vote was split between him and Hillary and now look at it…if he could split the Hispanic vote that could be a winning solution given the time frame given.

I said this earlier and I am going to say it again. I’m from the Bay Area (Northern CA) and last night at around 9pm the local news was reporting that several counties ran out of democrat ballots and people had to wait outside until other counties brought more ballots. I want to know how did CNN and other national news networks call Hillary as the winner with only 2% of the ballots being counted?

At 11:30 pm west coast time several people had not even voted (even though the polls closed at 8pm). Some counties are still counting right now so how so they know she won? and by what amount?

They claim a lot of independent voters showed up and decided to vote democrat which is buy the ran out of ballots. This girl in my class told me they wouldn’t even let her vote and she was registered.

I knew he wasn’t going to win CA because of the tension here between Blacks and Latinos and Asians. Asians and Mexicans WILL NOT VOTE FOR A BLACK MAN HERE!

WASHINGTON - Super Tuesday’s mixed outcome has set up at least four weeks of frenzied delegate hunting for Democrats Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama, pitting his well-financed all-terrain campaign against her big state strategy.

In a sign of Obama’s growing financial advantage, Clinton acknowledged Wednesday that she loaned her campaign $5 million late last month as Obama was outraising and outspending her heading into Feb. 5 Super Tuesday contests.

Buoyed by strong fundraising and a primary calendar in February that plays to his strengths, Obama plans a campaign blitz through a series of states holding contests this weekend and will compete to win primaries in the Mid-Atlantic next week and Hawaii and Wisconsin the following week.

Clinton, with less money to spend and less confident of her prospects in the February contests, will instead concentrate her efforts on Ohio and Texas, large states that hold primaries March 4 and where polling shows her with a significant lead. She even is looking ahead to Pennsylvania’s primary April 22, believing a largely elderly population there will favor the former first lady.

Clinton’s personal loan illustrated her financial disadvantage and her desire to pick her targets with care. On Wednesday, she sent out an e-mail appeal to donors Wednesday seeking $3 million in three days — an effort, that if successful, would match the fundraising rate Obama averaged for the entire month of January.

“I loaned it because I believe very strongly in this campaign,” Clinton told reporters Wednesday. “We had a great month fundraising in January, broke all records, but my opponent was able to raise more money and we intended to be competitive and we were.”

“And I think the results last night proved the wisdom of my investment.”

Both campaigns claimed bragging rights for their Super Tuesday successes Wednesday while acknowledging it could be weeks or even months until either candidate has amassed enough delegates to win the party’s nomination.

Obama won 13 Super Tuesday states while Clinton picked up eight and American Samoa with New Mexico left to be decided. Both camps claimed a small delegate lead, but an analysis by The Associated Press indicates there were still many to be counted.

“We are going to try and contest every contest, and win as many delegates we can,” Obama campaign manager David Plouffe said. “If you look at the next month, we have a lot of confidence that we will hold the pledged delegate lead.”

Obama, riding a wave of fundraising both from large donors and small Internet contributors, raised a stunning $32 million in January. Clinton campaign chairman Terry McAuliffe said last week the Clinton campaign raised only $13.5 million for the month. The $5 million loan was in addition to that amount, Wolfson said.

Clinton advisers were stunned by Obama’s January fundraising and have marveled at his ability to raise small-dollar amounts from a vast field of donors.

“We will have funds to compete,” chief Clinton strategist Mark Penn said, “but we’re likely to be outspent again.”

The Clinton camp was eager to take the luster off of Obama’s status as a “movement candidate” who has generated unprecedented activism and fundraising through the Internet. Clinton strategists went out of their way to label him an “establishment candidate” and worked to pitch her message to online activists.

Obama was heading late Wednesday to Louisiana, where he is favored to win the state’s primary Saturday largely on his strength among black voters. He also planned to campaign in Nebraska and Washington state, which also hold contests that day.

Clinton was being more circumspect. She planned to campaign Thursday in Virginia, which holds its primary next Tuesday along with neighbors Maryland and the District of Columbia. She was also headed to Maine, which holds precinct caucuses Sunday.

Penn conceded the campaign would rely on surrogates to campaign for her in most of states holding contests Saturday, including President Clinton and daughter Chelsea. It was a tacit admission that the former first lady was unlikely to win any of those states outright.

Privately, her strategists have also largely written off her chances of winning the so-called Potomac primary Feb. 9, given the large black populations in Virginia, Maryland and D.C. They are also playing down her chances in the following week’s major primaries — Hawaii, where Obama grew up, and Wisconsin, which has virtually sealed the nomination for other Democrats in years past.

Wisconsin’s Democratic electorate is largely liberal and college educated, and its open primary allows independents to vote — all factors that favor Obama.

Clinton political director Guy Cecil insisted the campaign was competing hard in all those places. the campaign has paid staff in Wisconsin and as developed a strong grass-roots organization there.

The campaign, however, was clearly focused on the March 4 contests in Ohio and Texas, both of them offering a trove of delegates. But both states are have several media markets, making advertising an expensive proposition. A state wide race in Texas can cost $1 million a week in advertising.

Cecil identified Texas as a top priority. “We think it is a linchpin in our nomination to the presidency,” he said.

While Clinton was focusing on Ohio and Texas, her organized supporters were weighing in for her in upcoming state contests. The American Federation of Teachers was going up with radio ads promoting her in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia. They also planned a two-week placement of radio ads in Wisconsin, which holds its primary Feb. 19.

Clinton faces significant fundraising obstacles ahead, raising the possibility that she might have to dip into the family’s wealth again. The Clinton’s financial disclosures, which reveal only broad ranges of assets, place their wealth between $10 million to $50 million.

Campaign spokesman Howard Wolfson said the loan came from Sen. Clinton’s “share of their joint resources.”

An analysis by the Campaign Finance Institute, which tracks trends in political money, found that Obama raised about a third of his money in 2007 from donors who gave $200 or less. Only one-third of his money came from donors who have given the legal maximum of $2,300, compared to Clinton who raised about half of her money from “maxed out” donors and only 14 percent from donors of $200 or less.

I don’t know who was being raciest but here in California there is a huge beef with the blacks and Mexicans. I don’t know where you live but if you know anybody in the CA region call them and ask them about it and see what they tell you.

A 14 year old boy was killed in Union City, Ca not to long ago for no reason, he was just waiting at the bus stop in front of his school to go home. The school said they had been trying to watch out for stuff like this because they know tensions are high. Every student interviewed (who were Mexican by the way) said it was because he was Black and well liked. Some of the Mexican kids said they didn’t even want to talk to Black kids at school because they were afraid that some gangs would retaliate.

This is just one incident there are plenty more just google hate crimes of 2007 in CA. This stuff got started in jails and spilled into the streets and there is not enough police and programs to fix it at the moment.

Hi Concreteloop I’m a long time reader first time poster. I love the site!
Many Canadians are paying close attention to the 08 elections.

After reading so many posts I have several issues that I need to address.

Firstly I really don’t understand why some Hillary supporters believe that they are voting for her because of the issues and her experience while those voting for Obama are doing so based on race. Super Tuesday proved that Obama supporters are diverse; he even won states that are predominantly white (I’m not surprised). Obama supporters are also analysing his record and experience. None of the Clinton supporters discuss the fact that in many of the states Clinton won, white women came out in droves to support her! Why not come to the immediate conclusion that these women have not listened to the issues and are voting for her because she is a woman? Many of the Clinton supporters for some reason think that black Obama supporters are naive and incapable of deciphering the debates and picking a candidate that is best suited for America. Obviously they can and have done so! Some choose to support Clinton others choose to support Obama STOP trivializing Obama’s support; scrutinize Clinton supporters the same way you scrutinize those backing Obama.

Secondly Hillary doesn’t have anymore experience than Barack. Hillary’s campaign has pushed that she has experience in the white house. Those 8 years of experience exposed her to foreign policy, diplomatic negotiations, and much more. And yet those 8 years of experience mean NOTHING since she could not use her experience to determine that the war in Iraq was bad idea! In the last debate she said that she felt mislead by Bush; she was duped, swindled, hoodwinked, he pulled the wool over her eyes. I would think that those 8 years in the White House would have given her enough experience to analyse the situation and make a decisive decision. Even if she did think Iraq had WMD why not admit that you were wrong for voting to invade Iraq! I’m sorry but Hillary is a clever woman, and I refuse to believe that she was bamboozled by Bush! She knew what she was doing she made a bad decision, and all of here so called experience in the White House did not prepare her to make a sound decision or be humble and admit her mistake!

Lastly the Clintons have polarizing personalities; you like them or hate them. The republicans hate the Clintons. It was during the Clinton administration that the Republicans were able to remobilize and gain popularity, hence the inauguration of the Bush administration. Nothing will get done in the White House if the Clintons win, since they play partisan politics like the republicans. Hence why many people like Obama, he can unite the two parties and get them to come up with plausible solutions and get them passed! This leads me to believe that the black people that choose to separate race from this political process are hoping that by Obama being a potential catalyst for “change” and “unity”, he will therefore lead black people into unification with “all races” (hopefully whites) that will make all of our issues disappear. That is the “promised land”: a society of optimal confusion where people and races that are diametrically opposed are forced to hold hands because everyone must “accept each other”. It’s nonsense. To do that, you must reject everything that you are. This is why these “open-minded” black people usually don’t know about their own people’s history or care about the issues that affect their own people.

As far as the tension between blacks and hispanics, that’s everywhere and that has been attested to by HONEST blacks and hispanics. I’m born and raised in the Bronx and although we’re the same people and we live amongst each other, you would have to be a fool to act like there aren’t problems between the two demographics. The gangs in high school are divided along racial lines between blacks and hispanics. The reason why these issues persist is because people will not tackle them. Four Reasons for OBAMA!

#1: Hillary blindly jumped on the bandwaggon campaign of HATE when she voted to invade a country unprovoked! Obviously she view people of color less when she can give the order to bomb a country full of women and children that have NOTHING to do with the beef America has with Al Queda.

#2: She was an advocate for universal social health care until she was bought off by medical aid providers. Now she thinks that it’s best if we pay for healthcare. That says a lot for her character.

#3: In the last debate, she came up with a fictional story about how she ran into some Black contractor in the South and how he was upset with Mexican Immigrants taking all of his work. Why must she try to pit Latinos against Blacks in an attempt to gain Latino voters? Blacks have never BLAMED Mexicans for our socioeconomic state in America! They are in the same boat that we are. That devisive behavior does not and will not ever benefit minorities in this country.

#4: Why can’t we just support the brotha because he is BLACK!?!? For hunderds of years, we have been alienated from society simply for being Black. Why can’t we just this ONE time come together and support him SIMPLY for being Black. I mean come on! He’s not a sell-out like Larry Elder, Ward Connerly or Clarence Thomas! With a recession looming and job growth getting slower, how am I going to be able to pay that back? What about all the young black men and women who are being locked up in prisons everyday at higher numbers. These are questions I need answers to, and have so far not gotten answers from Senator Barrack Obama? Yes I want to believe in HOPE, CHANGE AND A PROMISELAND, however I don’t need a Sunday Church Sermon, I need facts, an itinerary, and a plan of what you are going to be doing if you get in the white house. Obama may have ‘lost’ CA but he gets a percentage of delegates based on the amount of votes he got. He actually won in the SF Bay area where I live! One thing Obama has done well is get people interested in participating who weren’t. Of course with the way the Bush 2nd term has disappointed everyone - even the conservatives- people are definately ready for a change. But it’s up to us to get these politicians to make changes. We need a new Fannie Lou Hamer - several in fact!

I wish the candidates would talk about the upswing of violence against Black women from the gang rape at Dunbar Village housing project in FL to the recent execution of shoppers and employees at the Lane Bryant store in IL. Things are just out of control! I also don’t see how either Clinton’s or Obama’s healthcare plans will really work with the insurance companies still trying to control it. Clinton’s tax credit is only good if you actually have the cash to pay upfront and can wait a year or so to file and get the money back. That won’t work for me. When I left my job and was no longer getting insurance paid by my employer I found out my COBRA payments cost $534/month for just myself! I had excellent insurance that covered everything from OB visits to Chiropractic but $534 + $15 co-payments just would not work. [That's half my rent]! Especially when you factor in the cost of a typical hospital stay [$8000/day]. I had to have surgery and when I saw the itemized bill I nearly fell out my chair even though it was covered. $40 for every pill they gave me [34 pills] - I could have had my mom go to a pharmacy and fill an entire RX for less than that! $700 for the sheets on the bed THAT they wash and REUSE! I mean come on! THIS is why healthcare costs are out of control - and I agree with Michael Moore that insurance companies should not be making a profit from people getting sick and denying coverage. So Obama’s plan for cost-cutting sounds good….but still the system is flawed. Anyway, I’m looking forward to the next round of voting!!!!

Oh…and I’ve been doing some research on Hillary since she started touting her 35 years of experience. She was originally a Republican and supported Barry Goldwater who was opposed to Civil Rights - as really most the white politicians were. [I was really surprised and wonder why no one has brought this up]. The Southern Democrats - some who later switched to the Republican party - fought it tooth and nail. When LBJ was running he didn’t want to press the issue so he’d get their votes. Fanny Lou Hamer went to the 1968 Democratic Nat’l convention and forced the issue in public. That’s how Civil Rights and Voting Rights got passed. It’s really up to us to help things change!!

If the delegate numbers are too close the super delegates would decide the nominee. So I know it’s been posted here by others but it’s time to start making calls and writing letters to your representatives about supporting your choice - whomever that may be. I personally don’t want to feel I’ve been shafted with a Supreme Court type coronation ala Gore and Bush 2000. So make sure you VOTE!!!

Considering Obama only announced his candidacy one year ago his campaign has been nothing short of spectacular!! The Clintons have had 20 years + to build their coalition. I personally weighed many options before choosing a candidate and I’m satisfied with my choice.

It is not racist to acknowledge the differences in the races and cultures. I, for, one did not call any race out of their name, suggest they should go back where they came from,etc.

Furthermore, everybody has the right to state their opinions on race based on THEIR OWN experiences, period. If you disagree, fine.
