POLITICS: THE BLACK VOTE

The mainstream media has continued to make the battle between Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton an issue of both race and gender, particularly stressing the difficult time that black women have faced before heading to the polls.

According to a recent Washington Post article published on The Root, Washington D.C. Council member Marion Barry (D-Ward 8), who recently endorsed Obama, mentioned that the momentum for Obama can’t be denied.

“Whether anyone admits it, race and gender are a factor in everyone’s minds. Not the factor, but a factor,” he said. “The white Democrats have taken us for granted. They always thought our vote was there. The Republicans have ignored us. At last, we’re in a leveraged position in the Democratic Party.”

Super Tuesday’s results showed that black women overwhelmingly voted for Obama, while white women picked Clinton. Melissa Harris-Lacewell, associate professor of politics and African American studies at Princeton University, wrote that “it is not about choosing race; it is about rejecting Hillary’s Scarlett O’Hara act.”

“Black women want out of the war. Black women need health insurance. Black women need decent schools for their children. Black women need a strong economy that creates jobs. Black women need help caring for their aging parents. Black women want a Democratic win in the fall. Sisters chose Barack on Tuesday because they believe he can deliver these things, and that is much more empowering than just having a woman in the White House.”

Media personality and sportswriter Stephen A. Smith offers a different view on his blog:

“For years black folks have virtually handed our votes to the Democratic Party. To me, it’s foolish to do such a thing without actually hearing the issues, what policies are being geared for implementation, and who is really the individual best suited to run our country.”

CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) News sat down with Maya Angelou, one of the most respected black women in America, to discuss her decision between backing a black man versus a white woman as a presidential candidate.

Angelou notes that we are in the throes of finding out who we really are: “Sometimes we’ll vote for the same people our families voted for knowing very well that that has not served us very well.”

You’ll definitely want to check out the interview in its entirety.

I am an African American woman who voted for Barack because of his stand on the issues and if I wanted to vote for Barack because of color who cares white people have been doing it for years, white women are voting for Hillary because she’s white and a woman and aint nobody complaining.

People might not like how others choose to vote but it’s their right and their vote so…

You’ve got to fucking kidding me, Marion Berry. If anyone is symptomatic of inability to take our voting right seriously, it’s the fact that this fool not only holds a public office, but is given a forum anywhere. He didn’t mess-up once, but several times. You could have done much better than this embarrassment of a being.
It’s shameful that we don’t take it more seriously. You can blame the “mainstream media,” “white Democrats” are whomever. We march to church every Sunday morning, and blindly give our money to so many of those who don’t a damned about us, and most of them all black. TAKE INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITY FOLKS!!!!

  6. still tragic

Judah is right. This country wishes to destroy our men. And black women cannot hold the family up by themselves for too much longer. A race can truly suffer if the men cannot succeed. I have a son so I have a vested interest in the survival of our brothers.

And shame on Maya Angelou for that statement. I respect her, but she has a powerful influence and that could affect some people’s view of Obama.

I am casting my vote for Obama.

McCain and Obama Turn Fire on Each Other
    http://www.nytimes.com/20...bdb8e05&ex=1203138000

two quotes jumped out at me
“Mrs. Clinton headlined a rally with about 12,000 people in El Paso on Tuesday night; as at that event, the McAllen audience was predominantly Hispanic and female — her chief voter bases — and the audiences were two of the most raucous that Mrs. Clinton has seen during this campaign. In El Paso, even her most boilerplate remarks were rewarded with wild hooting from the audience.”

“Mrs. Clinton is counting on huge turnout by Hispanics and women to propel her to victory in Texas. She is holding events in Corpus Christi and San Antonio on Wednesday before heading to Ohio, which also votes on March 4, and plans to return to Texas next Wednesday for campaigning and a debate on Feb. 21.”

I wonder if CNN will make a big deal of the fact that a LOT of woman favor Hillary Clinton, because she is a woman.
    And…..That’s okay, I don’t have a problem with that.

Just don’t do cartwheels and have a fits when you notcied that a lot of Black People favor Barack Obama

you know, us black people don’t vote for Obama just cause he is black, but because we know he will make a good president. I mean, come on, no one voted for Al Sharpton, and he was black, wasn’t he?

  25. Obama supporter

Well I for one has been following the presidential campaign since day 1. At first I was all on Hillary’s side. But to be honest, she has not really said anything convincing to me. I think she and George Bush are together in this race. I say this because he is endorsing her. If she wins the election, we would have had 24 years of Clinton’s and Bush’s running this country. Is that what we really want? I see a woman who has been corrupted by the system. I don’t see a woman that is for everyone. With Obama, I really see that he can bring us together as a whole, and that is what this country needs. I would never vote for Hillary because she is a woman, just as I would never vote for Obama because he is black. But I do believe that he would try his best to help this country.

    FACTS:
Did you know that Hillary sat on the board of Directors at Wal-mart? Back when they did not even give their employees healthcare? (Now all of a sudden, she wants everyone to have it whether they want it or not.)

Did you know that her Universal Health care plan states that is you don’t get it, your wages will be garnished. (sounds like dictatorship to me. Shouldn’t it still be our choice to get it or not???)

Did you know that she fired her Latina campaign leader right after she lost 5 states in a row. The catch is , she appointed a black to head her campaign now. (hmmm, trying to get the black vote now that she has used the Latina to get the Hispanic vote….USER)

Know the facts people before you just jump the gun and choose gender or race in this election.

DO YOU REALLY WANT THIS COUNTRY TO TURN INTO A DICTATORSHIP?? IT IS TIME FOR A CHANGE!!!!!!

    YES WE CAN!!!

  26. JUDAH

    @81

People didn’t vote for Al Sharpton because he was not representative of a negro image that comforted white America. If whites had liked Al Sharpton, blacks would’ve voted for him also. When white America is not comforted, black America is not comforted because the sisters are in control the black community for numerous reasons (mostly the mental ineptitude and spiritual stupor that brothers are in); and their mindset, for the most part, is assimilation into mainstream (white) society. Thusly, in order to be a viable candidate for national leadership as a black man, you have to appeal to the white man, white woman, and black woman. The black man’s opinion is irrelevant for the most part because this society despises him and one’s opinion is really only as relevant as a person’s self-image and self-confidence. This is how you know, in my opinion, that this voting process is a scam and a “cunningly devised fable” (II Pet 1:16). When you check it out, as phony as Al Sharpton is, he does address black issues to some capacity. His approach is also very confrontational. White people don’t like to be confronted by anyone for any reason because they refuse to be held responsible for their actions in the same way that they hold others responsible. Obama on the other hand has been co-signed on by most of the American media outlets (print and electronic) across the country in an attempt to build him up as a worthy foil. He speaks smooth, soothing things unto the people and has been able to transcend his physical characteristics by playing on the desperation of all Americans to save this country and save their dreams. Blacks have bought this positive propaganda from the media hook, line, and sinker. Even the New York Post, a notoriously racist newspaper, has thrown it’s hat in with Obama.

  33. oatsuzn

I agree with Marion Barry. My ex was a staffer for Marty Meehan(D. Mass) and I would argue this point with her and others for years. Blacks are ready to unquestionably give their vote to the democrats and it has been taken for granted or not considered worthy of mentioning in the past. The only way to become a prominent force in the government is to present on both sides, Republican and Democrat or throw full support behind someone like Obama. But as we can see by Maya Angelou’s riddles, we will never have such unity. I gotta agree with Judah(first time for everything), his echoes my sentiments exactly.

  34. NoMoreSoul

@83, so she sat on the board of Wal-mart when healthcare wasnt offered. So what? U think she had plans of being president then? And this was a while back so ur excuses have no juice.

But that whole mandatory healthcare needs to be reworked. She believes the only way itll work is if people are forced to buy it. Although I think she’s going about it the wrong way, she does have a point. The big corporations are controlling healthcare, making a huge profit off our expense and something needs to be done to fix it.

@84, please cut the b.s. no one voted for Al Sharpton b/c the man is UNTRUSTWORTHY. Acting as if he speaks for blks as a whole. He does not represent me! He’s always at the wrong place, instigating and provoking the media. The guy is just too much on his own, everything he does is to amplify his public status. Can we trust a man like that to lead our country? He may be lookin out for us, but i would like it if he would look out for himself.

Obama is different. There’s a clear difference b/w the two and that’s why people are drawn to him. He’s young, he’s blk, his father was an immigrant, he has foreign blood, he’s traveled around the world, he’s biracial, he’s positive. He REPRESENTS what America is today. He’ll have a board of advisors as every President does, and he’ll make the best of our nation.

    Not Al Sharpton.

  36. “I’m black before I’m a woman”.

    Lord help us. lol.

I think some of you people are way too paranoid for my taste. The white man is the devil, I do not trust nobody, white people think this, white people are that, blah blah blah, [insert THE MAN here] with more blah blah blah. Ya’ll would shit bricks if you came across a predominately (and no not racist, but predominately) white blog if they ever so mentioned a generalization. So don’t be a hypocrite. I know its hard, you want to get away with it, but you know its not fair and be a decent person.

The President of the UNITED STATES has to lead the NATION. The entire nation is filled many many many sort of people — that includes so many races, various backgrounds, sexual preferences, colors, genders, religions, etc — and all these people have rights. For Judah as a black person who is only interested and think/view a black leader should only cater to them [black community] and if such leader is more ‘global’ is selfish and foolish. And STEREOTYPICAL to boot. Who cares about everyone else, right? YOU’RE A “SELL OUT” IF YOU THINK, CONCERN AND HAVE EVERYBODY’S INTEREST TO HEAL THE WORLD RIGHT? Judah is a trip and a paranoid extremist. Just as bad as a white supremacist, you talk and think just like one too, but in a different circumstance. And the worst part is you don’t even know it.

    Latane,
America is FAR from the most sexist countries of the world LOL! Though what the irony of that is, we have had women leaders in the most unfair countries where women are treated as basically subhumans, and yet America hasn’t had a female president yet.

    Anyway, enough of this. I’m anticipating Huey Freeman’s/Aaron McGruder’s opinion. Good evening/morning/afternoon/night ya’ll!!! =D

  37. MaxAMillion

Believe it or not, a lot of people (both black and white) had no interest in voting for Al Sharpton because they don’t like his act and feel he can’t be trusted. Black people voting for Obama in large number versus Sharpton actually proves that we won’t vote for just anybody.

There ain’t no conspiracy here. We are voting for a man that we feel can change the country for the better. Obviously there are a lot of white people who feel the same way.

  38. modest-goddess

I’m also sick of the medias focus on race and gender in this election. I wish they’d focus on the issues so we’d know what we are voting for.

  39. americans for change

    Right on #63,

I totally agree. The interview with Maya was nice. She states that she loves Hillary because she was a woman who said something nice when she got to the white house, or when she was the wife of the govenor, whatever. She is not being nice now.

Everyone has a right to vote their own convictions, Maya has hers. White women have theirs, and some people are just voting because of gender. latinos are voting because of loyalty, Mr. Clinton put a few latinos in office positions, and now they are coming around ready to collect on their favor that they did for latinos. That politics.

but the true, the real candidate for 2008 is none other than Sen. Barack Obama.

People will vote. The turn out has been impressive. Sen. Barack Obama has stayed above the fray. Did you here his victory speech on Tuesday. Awesome

The man is Awesome. Hillary tried to get a stab in by saying Texas did not need all hat and no cow, yeah right, she is already trying to get in little stabs, and jabs.

    Obama stay above the fray.

  40. americans for change

I hope Obama will refute all of the lies the clintons will throw at Sen Obama. But I hope he can stay above the fray.

Correct the lies, but stay on message.

  41. Jada

I’m voting for Hillary because I feel sexism has a bigger impact on the US than racism does. Back during the feminist movement white feminists spoke of racism and sexism while the majority of black civil rights leaders, being male, rarely spoke of sexism. The “million MAN march”, Malcolm X’s remarks on how women should never be involved in politics, rather their place is lying down (referring to women being here solely for sex) all come about in my mind. I continuously see it today. Black men still benefit from MALE privilege and it isn’t recognized at all. Gender is more important in this culture than race is. We have male dominated religions, all the jobs that pay the most money are held by men, all races of men make more money than all races of women, every one in 3 women will be sexually assaulted, every 45 seconds a women is raped yet the media and society still doesn’t recognize this as a hate crime to women and in fact raping your wife wasn’t actually considered “rape” by the legal system until the 1990s. Even language revolves around men (for example the constitution still uses “he” to represent all people, which has been used in the past against women). Even colors are gender specific. The truth is that sexism has been around 1,000+ years before racism so I think it’s more important at this time to not only have a women president, but a women president that takes on issues that effect women . She’s the ONLY candidate to take action against the fact that women still make 77 cents to each man’s dollar (with the Equal Pay Act this would also take care of pay discrimination that happens to black people as well). She’s the only one trying to strengthen laws to stop violence against women (and has been doing so long before she was even a senator). Barack hasn’t done anything for women or black people. Did anyone hear what he said when he went to southside Chicago? He told the people there that they need to stop the cycle of violence. Really? Easy for him to say. How are you going to go to the ghetto and tell them what they’re doing wrong when it should be the government’s responsibility? Any person of intelligence knows that crime rates are higher in areas of poverty because people got to do what they got to do to get that money. What he SHOULD be telling those people is that he’s going to strengthen affirmative action, defend equal pay, strengthen health care, welfare, and education so no one has to turn to crime and violence. It really comes down to this, the US would rather have a black man because he’s a man than a white women, because she’s a women. I even saw these racist white men on tv saying they didn’t like Obama, but they are going to vote for him because they would do anything not to have a women president.

The only Obama I would vote for is his wife.

  42. YAWN

#120 JADA Said: “voting for Hillary because I feel sexism has a bigger impact on the US than racism does.”

With all due respect, you sound like a fucking idiot. When you’re through with your bitter banter, kindly move to the Middle East where you won’t be constantly reminded of all the men that dogged you out.

  43. YAWN

^^^^ And I’m sure Hilary Clinton did a lot for women by literarily endorsing adultry and shamelessly crying her way out of a tight situation, all because of her selfish lust for power.

  44. Sugar 150

    @ 102 JADA
You obviously don’t know much about the feminist movement! Did you know that there was a black feminist movement? Do you know why most black feminists call themselves womanists? Please go and read about the reasons why many black females feel that feminism does not represent them and only represents white women. You should try reading some blogs like…angry black bitch, and what Tami said. Some women (white) are so ignorant to the fact that women of colour face racism and sexism; while most feminist chose to suggest that sexism trumps racism. Maybe you need to read the op-ed in the NY Times that Gloria Steinman wrote, and realize how women of colour are ignored in feminism. Please don’t come on hear talking about feminist and how concerned they were about racism (when most of them chose to ignore racism). And yes third wave feminism is trying to be more open to the issues that women of colour face; but historically that was not the case. Black women are FREE WOMEN and can chose to vote for whomever they want!

  45. JUDAH

    @ Floacist

Sis, no disrespect to you, but the funniest part of your ridiculous commentary is that you spoke about me in the third person as if I’m a higher power. I have the right to my opinion don’t I? What bothers you more, the fact that I’m a black man with an opinion divergent from yours or the fact that other people agreed with me, lol? Negroes like you kill me, so obsessed with telling other people why they should be “open-minded” while you yourself are unable to justify your own opinion without resorting to vain idealism that never has and never will materialize. Your high level of stupidity proved my previous statement correct concerning the effeminization of the black community and the perplexity that has ensued (Isaiah 3:12, Jeremiah 31:22). Underneath all that global bullshit you spewed, you could’ve edited 90% of your post by simply saying “I’m a black female feminist, I feel like forcing myself on all races will solve our problems.”. Just state your opinion without worrying about my own because honestly, you’re too idiotic to refute anything that I’m saying. Where did you see me comment on the role of the president and what it should be? I’ve always castigated black people for assuming that a president, no matter the color, would have their own particular interests at heart above the masses. Like most idiots though, you read what you want, comprehend what you can, and disregard the the things that are beyond your scope. Where did you see me say that I supported or did not support Barack Obama as a “black leader”? You know what the fact of the matter is in my opinion sis? You can’t think at all, much less for yourself so you must keep your mind attuned to what it’s comfortable with. That’s fine and I understand the mental poison that pervades our people, but please don’t attempt to confuse me because your confused.

Who is concerned with “healing the world”, lmao? What is that, to “heal the world”? Is that code for forcing your beliefs on everyone? They went to Iraq off the pretext of “healing the people” and a simple negro like yourself probably believed it. If I’m an “extremist” because I’m more concerned with my own than I am with someone else’s then I’ll be an extremist. The black men that don’t bend over, proverbially speaking, will be classified as terrorists anyway so it makes no difference to me. My leader is Christ, not any man. When you study Christ, he always started at his own people first (Matt 2:6, Matt 10:5, Matt 15:24, John 4:22, etc.). Only a buffoon and a mind-controlled drone is concerned about crackers hooked on crystal meth over the issues that we have in the black community. This is why these politicians have such disdain for the masses, the high level of stupidity. What I always laugh about is that blacks like yourself that want to force your vision on everyone always disappear when the truth comes out. You people are nowhere to be found when real problems that affect just our community are exposed because it goes against what you’ve been programmed to stand for. Please don’t tell me what I don’t know about myself because I’m an authority on me, lol. Lastly sis, get back to me when one, just one, of the schemes and plans that you house negroes concoct comes to fruition. They never do.

    @ Maxamillion

Brother if that’s how you feel, then that’s how you feel. We don’t have to agree. I’ve never seen a so-called black politician that black people rallied around that wasn’t first co-signed on by the white man. Never. I don’t believe in “conspiracy theories”, I believe in truth established by research, and I also don’t believe everything I see on television, hear on the radio, or read in the newspaper. We’ll see if white people really want this man in office. We’ll see if black people really know who this man is. We’ll see if this works.

  46. drbennington

I am a mulatto woman and this primary is definitely revealing who the true racists are….the Black community. I was raised by my white mother who was a single parent because my black father refused to be accountable for his participation, so basically he was a sperm donor. Growing up I have always been treated more fairly by whites than blacks. I have never known many black men who have done anything for a woman…they treat women like chattel.
I cannot and will not vote for an idealist like Obama. People are not examining the issues or doing their research, this is evident. Black people are just jumping on the Obama band wagon because they are making their decision strictly based on skin color.

Like Larry Elder (a well educated truly intelligent black man) says in his book, “Stupid Black Man”, this is not your great grandfathers America, there is not the extent of white racism that once prevailed. Any black person has the resources to tap into government assistance to obtain a higher education and along with the correct moral choices a black person can be quite prosperous in this country indeed. I mean if you are out having babies before you are 20 this lessons your chance of success for it creates more challenges.

  47. rastarr**

@ jada RACE IS CLEARLY STILL AN ISSUE AND SINCE YOUR SO FOR SUFFERAGE RIGHTS FIRST DID YOU NO THAT ALICE PAUL AND CAT* THE TWO HUGE LEADERS DINT FIGHT FOR AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMAN AND IN THE MARCH FOR WOMANS RIGHT A BLOCK (DOWN) FROM THE WHITE HOUSE WHEN PRESIDENT WILSON WAS IN OFFICE BLACK WOMEN HAD TO MARCH IN THE BACK..

  48. JUDAH

    @107

Lol, are you a “mulatto”? Are black people the “real racists”? See how confused you are and how pervasive the hatred for black men is? You’re so delusional that you denigrate all black people as racists and underachievers because you grew up around whites, but then you extol the opportunities that blacks have in a society that is controlled by the same whites that imbued you with that mentality. That’s the type of thing I’m talking about when I refer to the issues in OUR COMMUNITY that these house negroes want to brush aside and think will be solved by forced integration. Maybe your father ran out because he was too stupid to understand before it was too late that your mother only wanted him for his penis. He unfortunately left you in the white woman’s hands to teach you to hate all black men (and black people in general) like she does. Your mother was probably repeatedly told by her father to stay away from black men but she didn’t listen and now she regrets it. Are you voting for Hillary because she’s the best candidate or because you want to ensure that no non-white controls America? This is why the scriptures tell us not to interracially mingle because mixed nuts like yourself are produced (if you are what you claim you are).

I’m familiar with Larry Elder also, a.k.a. Super Coon. He’s one of these negroes who thinks that he’s doing himself and America a service by telling black people that racism is a figment of their imaginations. This is why, once again, these issues will never be resolved without divine intervention. Too much confusion.

Yawn: You call me an idiot yet you don’t give any evidence supporting such. If you want to call me an idiot then disprove my arguments.

Sugar 150: I DO know there is a black feminist movement. Why do you think I support feminism? No doubt, there are white women that are ignorant to racism and I’m in no way denying that, BUT throughout history there has been a much larger portion of white women in the feminist movement that included ending racism in their agenda versus the civil rights movement that specifically spoke of black male issues. Even today, most feminist groups, even though they contain mostly white women, seek to end racism and make it a priority, but unfortunately the same can not be said for the black power groups of today when it comes to sexism. One of the few exceptions that come to mind is the BPP (although Eldridge Cleaver, a big part of the BPP, was extremely sexist and endorsed raping women at one time).

When it comes down to it I think the divide and conquer technique has worked better with gender rather than race. It’s interesting to note that you mentioned the racism behind white feminists, but you had nothing to day about the large amount of sexism displayed by civil rights groups. This reaffirms what I’m saying. We as women (and as a society) accept sexism easier than we accept racism. Women make up the majority of the US yet we haven;t had a women president? Let’s be real, if the US was made up of mostly black people we would have already elected a black leader multiple times. Historically women have been held down longer so they are quick to put themselves down and accept sexism. Simple fact.

Rastarr: I DEFINITELY did NOT say race wasn’t an issue. I definitely DO think racism is a huge issue today, but I ALSO happen to believe sexism is a huge issue and in fact larger issue given the fact that gender is more important and has been more important than race today and the last thousand + years or so. Gender is much more ingrained in us than race is. The way you speak, you’re gestures, down to the way you’re dressed right now is due to gender training which ALWAYS hurts women in the end.

Additionally, like I said before, I didn’t say all white feminists were anti-racist. What I’m saying is that there’s a much larger amount of white feminists that are anti-racist versus the amount of civil rights advocates that are anti-sexist.

“What I’m saying is that there’s a much larger amount of white feminists that are anti-racist versus the amount of civil rights advocates that are anti-sexist.”

^^^ The reason I stress this is because I feel this is an important representation that displays racism being more of a priority in society than sexism. If even our own liberation movement rarely speaks of sexism then what does this say about the rest of society?

SEXISIM may very well be but there is still a lot more reason to fight for because there are plenty of laws to protect womans rights and with obama as PR. then you no he can stand for race equality and sexism issues … what im sayin is with him you can get a bonus and that may not always be…. what i’m sayin is that our time is now to have a black president … you can always have a 1st lady doing a job as a president .. if you get what im sayin but havin a black man fulfill that duty any time i think not…….but what i’m sayin is that laws require woman to be treated and paid fairly…. listen the things that we woman have Now has came so far from the 20th cent. and so many jobs (high) jobs (white majority )women have been able to recieve. BUT we are still in the mist of givin job titles of “the first black woman” or “black man” to african americans.. i think that with OBAMA HAS OUR DEMOCRATIC NOM OR EVEN PRESIDENT BREAKS DOWN BARRIERS FOR OUR CULTURE AND CAN CREATE A CULTURE SHOCK FOR MY GENERATION ” THAT YES WE CAN BE MORE THAT A RAPPER OR VIDEO HOE”!!!

    @ JADA,
I understand what you are trying to say, but I still disagree with you! Don’t patronize me with that crap about, “It’s interesting to note that you mentioned the racism behind white feminists, but you had nothing to say about the large amount of sexism displayed by civil rights groups. This reaffirms what I’m saying. We as women (and as a society) accept sexism easier than we accept racism. Women make up the majority of the US yet we haven’t had a women president?”

It doesn’t reaffirm anything! I didn’t mention the civil rights movement because I wasn’t addressing that part of your statement! I was addressing the fact that you want to play oppression Olympics and believe that sexism trumps racism.
You pretty much explained that in your post (and if that’s not what you were trying to say you insinuated it) . You are voting for Hillary because she’s a woman, and the fact that you believe she has done more for women.
How so? Just because she can through out statistics means nothing. Hillary doesn’t give a dame about women, she’s privileged she’s not a feminist and what does she know about poor women? Hillary is dishing out shit and many women are eating it!
If she has so much experience and was highly involved during her husbands presidency, then why not try to start an initiative for women then?
Because she was too busy enjoying her privilege!

But at the same time these ant-racist feminist were not all anti-racist. Just
b/c you tag on anti-racism to your cause doesn’t mean you support women of colour. It’s the same as how many students will talk about how they are anti-racist ( they will wear anti-racist gear and all) but still make racist comments.
Where were all those anti-racist feminist when Carol Moseley Braun was running for president? Why were they not shouting in the streets for women to ignore the issues and vote for her because she’s a women, like they do now for Hillary? Why were they not talking about having a first female president then? Where was Gloria Steinem’s New York Times op-ed for Braun? Could it be that the colour of her skin made white feminist think of her as less of a woman?

What I’m trying to say is that sexism doesn’t trump racism. Women of colour suffer from both, and we haven’t even discussed class. That’s a whole other can of worms.

I’m sorry but the divide and conquer you speak of has not worked more for gender than race. Women can have friendships with each other regardless of race and not be stigmatized or labeled as taboo! While people in the USA still make a big deal about interracial relationships! If sisterhood and female unity was such a threat
( that’s what the divide and conquer technique is used for to eliminate threats) then why was it not illegal in the USA, like interracial marriage was?

Divide and conquer has been huge when it comes to race. Look at how the media is twisting Latino and Asian support for Hillary as racist.
You here it all the time…the black brown divide…blah blah blah!

And just as a final note, to provide an example. I think Condoleezza Rice and Hillary Clinton are very much alike! They both have similar personalties, have experience (Condoleezza has more experience when it comes to foreign relations. They are both strong and highly intelligent, they both supported the war in Iraq….but guess what if Condoleezza was running for president none of these so called anti-racist feminist would be shouting from the mountain tops in support for her! Why do you ask, drum role please ……because she’s BLACK! Most white feminist want to see the natural order of things…white men then white women then everyone else after! It’s just like how some feminist are saying
Obama has time to be president( see femanisting.com) ….so step out of the way cause we come first then you can have your turn!

PS how do you know that Obama has done nothing for women and has not spoken for womens rights? If so then why are some feminists and womanists supporting him?

I do believe that sexism is a huge issue that needs to be addressed but at the same time racism still exist so does religious persecution and class.
All these issues affect society. So depending on your situation one might trump the other and they may be equal. I however refuse to insult and trivialize the discrimination that women and people of colour face.
So for me sexism doesn’t trump racism!

    @ Onemil02:

You keep finding it necessary to claim that you’re black. And time and time again, you make it obvious that you are not.
