QUOTES OF THE WEEK: ARETHA ON THE GRAMMYS / NATALIE ON AMY’S WIN

February 13th, 2008
( Photos: Splash News)

Sure doesn’t feel like the Grammys is over when people are still talking about it. Naturally since it was music’s “biggest night”, a lot of people have things to say.

One of those people were Aretha Franklin who seemed a tad offended at Beyonce and the rest of the Grammys for calling Tina Turner “the Queen” during her performance:

“I am not sure of whose toes I may have stepped on or whose ego I may have bruised between the Grammy writers and Beyoncé, however I dismissed it as a cheap shot for controversy. In addition to that, I thank the Grammys and the voting academy for my 20th Grammy and love to Beyoncé anyway.”

Okay, so the real Queen has spoken I suppose?…

Another famed artist spoke on the Grammys and has been receiving lots of attention for her opinion. Natalie Cole expressed her unhappiness with Amy Winehouse’s wins at ceremony. She said in this video and to people magazine at a Grammy party:

“I don’t think she should have won. I think it sends a bad message to our young people who are trying to get into this business, the ones who are trying to do it right and really trying to keep themselves together. We have to stop rewarding bad behavior.”

“I’m sorry. I think the girl is talented, gifted, but it’s not right for her to be able to have her cake and eat it too. She needs to get herself together.”

I mean, she could die. This isn’t something that’s cute and fun just to throw around in the press. The girl really has a problem, and I think for those of us who have been in the business long enough, we know the sacrifice it takes. This is about discipline and hard work, and you don’t get to just do your drugs and go onstage and get rewarded.”

I hear Natalie and I’m also not on the Winehouse bandwagon – but, the girl still walks away with five awards in the end.

    [another] l.a. state of mind

i think amy deserved those awards. really. i understand where natalie’s coming from but i feel like this should be amy’s wake up call. so she can realize how great she is. i mean come on she & kanye tied for nominations. what more can you ask for?

I only tossed Joss Stone in there as a point of reference. I can tolerate her a little more than Winehouse, in terms of soul, I guess. But STILL…………

    OKAY

Sometimes it’s better to be seen and not heard but in Aretha’s case, I could have done without seeing her or hearing that petty mess she talking. Who is to say that either is the queen. Way too old to be hating on others. I say PATTI IS THE QUEEN. JMO
Now about Natalie, she knows her nose is burnt out in the middle but she plus, I am not saying Amy should be recognized for her drug problem but you can’t say she doesn’t deserve something for her talent and that album.

Noted. But what disturbs me most is her musical CLASSIFICATION here and in the press in general.

And in the end, it’s just an opinion. I just get hype when I feel like true soul singers are being ignored.

I sorta agree with you. Everyone knows there are more talented people than those in the limelight out there, and that what it takes to make it is to stand out from the rest. But how you gon badmouth Amy for being? Others are very deserving too, but you can’t say she doesn’t sing her heart out. Look up her live performances of Love is a Losing game.

What I don’t understand about your comment is, why you pick only Joss Stone and Amy Winehouse. Because they’re white? Get outta here. You can’t say it’s because the crowd prefers them cuz they pretty n lightskinned, cuz Amy ain’t exactly the standard pretty chick.

And YES. If you read all of her reviews, it IS suggested that she put out the “definitive” soul album. That’s what all her hype is based on. The awards issue is relative.

She deserved them. I’m not only saying this because i stans for her but because she makes GREAT music..”Rehab” was a popular song in the states…so was her album.

I dont get it. In that case, Elvis and Ray Charles don’t deserve any grammys or special awards too.

I understand what your sayin but if those artists aren’t being promoted thats not Amy’s fault its the record labels fault thats what their there for, to promote their artists, people have to KNOW their records are out in order for people to buy them, people do buy good music they just have to KNOW its out.

Aretha is so full of herself maybe that’s why she looks like a Macy’s Thanksgiving day float. QUEEN come on! Where was I when she had her coronation? everyone is entittle to their own opinion and hell we all have our favorites…I think

    Mary J. Blige… Hip-Hop Queen
    Rihanna……Pop Queen
    Leontyne Price….Opera Queen
Latifah, Whitney, Patti LaBelle, Tina turner….Queen period etc.etc.

We as Black people really suffer from the crabs in a barrel mentality. I mean there is enough room and talent for us to honor, exult and call whomever we want King or Queen…for goodness sake !

As far as Natalie cole is concerned, part of me feels like she has the right to speak because she has walked in those same steps and knows EXACTLY what Amy Winehouse is going through, but because she knows first hand I would think she’d be a little more compassionate and reach out to Amy or enlighten the rest of us on how hard it is to overcome a drug-addition.

LOL. Sorry, but yes. Amy’s performance is NOTHING compared to Sharon Jones or Ledisi. And YES, it DOES piss me off that white artists get major soul press and more deserving black artists don’t. Oh, and obviously, you’re not much of a purist. So I’ll give a nugget if it will appease you: Dusty Springfield did it better than Winehouse.

And your reponse to me sounded fine at first, but please hold back on the rude phrases. I WON’T get out of here. And you really don’t want to travel THAT road, do you?….

I somewhat agree with Natile. I like Amy but 5 grammy’s was a lot I don’t think musically she should have one all of them she good but I think that her drama is making her more famous than her music. But who cares they give grammy’s and nominations to anybody so atleast a decent artist took them home.

We all know bad behavior from white young celebs gets rewarded look at Paris Hilton get arrested for mutiple DUI’s comes out of jail making millions on intervies. Britney getting million dollar offers to talk about her problems that’s the way the industry has chosen to work.

    AMY WHO????????

First of all Aretha is old enough to do and say what she wants and the performace I thought with Tina and Beyonce was not all thatgreat. Aretha as well as others paved the way so that all these young school girls like Bey could be doing what they do now. Futhermore you disrespectful whit or black young people stop calling her names, let someone talk abotu your moms and female family members that way. You all are rude and sick and personally we can say what we want in the hood about our own but your white asses better be glad you got the internet to hide behind.
Amy Whinehouse with her ugly anorexic loking behind id not anyone souls singer. Hellt he dope fiend really can’t sing. She did not deserve 5 grammy wins like someone said there were songs out here stronger than hers been out less time than two years. The grammys is whack. Let me tell you if any black oersons behavior had been as open in drug use as Amys they may hve gottten nominated but not 5 awards. Natalie had to get her ac together.
This industry is racist and hypocritical.Using crack, herione is illegal not only is she a drug addict but she is a criminal.
They statement she mad about Blake let me know as soon as he gets out she is going to tell the grammy nods to kiss her ass and be back on the pipe.Amy is not fooling anyone but you.Rehab should not have been awarded.

Everytime I get on here and theres a thread that has the slightest bit to do with Beyonce, I know I’m gonna read a ton of ignorant ass people, making themselves sound stupid, Beyonce has the right to say anything she wants, and I’m sorry but Tina is AMAZING, and shit if Bey thinks shes the Queen then so be it… ARETHA… get over ALLLLLL of yourself, I know its ALOT, but try… so what you can scream loud enough to fill a whole arena, or eat 20,000 spectators out of house and home, you still aint shit, but a FAT, GREASY ASS WHALE who can sing granted, but OMG, whatever your the queen of FAT, PIE EATING CONTESTS, and HORRIBLE REVEALING COSTUMES…. and all you ignorant ass people who thought Beyonce was “Wrong”……. go fuck yourselves… Beyonce is the one you all love to hate… but the truth of the matter is….

ONLY Insecure women, and gay men (because they usually want to be her) hate Beyonce, I hate to put it out there like that… but hell its true. Hate is a very strong word… its okay not to care for someone or their music, but to hate someone you really know nothing about is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. You envy Beyonce, and thats why you have nothing but Negative things to say, if you JUST didnt care for her, you wouldnt even stop to comment, but all of you Haters Envy her, because you wanna be just like her !

Point blank Amy’s cd was the shit and it out did those other albums in the category…hands down you gotta give credit where credit is due. Even though her performance had “strung out” all on her face…shiiittt…how many spectacular artists do you know haven’t been strung out. Look at Whitney, beautiful voice and on drugs. Not saying that it’s right..but you can’t take away someone’s talent because of what they do in their spare time.

yea i think some people need to focus on their health rather than grammy-made titles The grammys have traditionally ignored black music so they shouldn’t be the authority on who is queen, king, princess, whatever!

and natalie is a true hypocritic idiot. i watched something on the news where she said “these young people” need to learn it’s not okay to “be crazy”… bitch please- there are plenty of old people doing wrong. and amy’s addiction is not contingent on a grammy- she has a problem and not giving her a grammy isn’t gonna make her well!

why cant aretha be mad shit i would feel the same but the only thing wrong is how she went about SAYING IT. beyonce called her queen with no detail of what so maybe she did feel offended and everybody is titled to the thoughts if she felt disrepected y cant she voice that? BECAUSE she BIG? i think not just because aretha aint six 6 dont make her unable to voice her voice because all i see is that people saying “shut you fat ass up or “aretha cant say nothin she needs to loses weight” or she needs to sto sweatin bullets” so what if she is huge does that mean she cant talk…. shit if thats so i would say fuck yall too just like aretha did to the grammys and keep it movin..she is the queen of r&b everyone knows that and tina is of rock and roll…

    @ the cole comment
she right altough grammys are based on talents “i hope” people cant keep sayin o well least she can sing.. thats bull shit and is sendin the wrong message and this is not just for amy but whoever.. drugs are bein seen more and more as cool and we losin more lives due to it.. it is a problem and thats the message people (starS) should be sending…. and come on be real some awards arent just based of your TALENTS..

I think it is more than the Queen title that she is mad over. Beyonce basically siad that the women she named were good but Tina was better than all of them. How would you feel if someone named you then said someone was better than you and you are sitting front row. That intro would have been great for a Tina Turner Tribute but not the Grammys where many of the Divas she named were watching or sitting in the audience.

They always have a troubled poster child and Amy is just that for the moment…she truly does have talent but then again she’s battling something even bigger-herself…and the way they talk about her in the media isn’t cool….

    Here it is for me:

I bought Amy’s album. It wasn’t all that good TO ME. I played it only once. Apart from the song with the Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell sample, nothing compelled me to play it again. Her vocal style was just too ugly sounding. As she began her public slide, I matched the voice to what she was prtraying to the public (spitting at the audience, smoking crack, looking like a dirty, infested dope fiend from Alphabet City, canceling shows), and it made sense. She sounds like how she looks and acts. She just has a nasty, stink, evil vibe.

If that works for some people, fine.

What really bothers me is that people take these situations so personally…. not only do Aretha, Amy and Natalie need prayer, but a bunch of you on this board too! The “Queen” argument is the result of an extremely lauded and talented woman who has become so wrapped up in a title that she can’t allow someone else’s shine. For all of you who are offended on Aretha’s behalf….please get over it. Beyonce did not say the Queen of Soul— she said the Queen. That is her opinion. Aretha has been dubbed the Queen, but there is no copyright— there is no law— there is no rulebook saying that she needs to be the only Queen. I am sorry. I love Aretha, but this just sounds like insecurity and a need to get attention and I want her to check herself and realize she’s done too much in her career to tarnish it by looking like “old battleax with an attitude”. It’s not becoming, it’s not necessary and frankly, it’s beneath her. And as for those who have critized Beyonce— Tina is here Queen just like Patti is mine! If you have a problem come see me!

As for Ms. Cole. While I do understand her point that encouraging drug use is not appropriate, the Grammys are to honor musical talent. Amy is a very talented individual and while I agree that she needs help, her album was fresh and different in TODAY’s era of music. She won based on that alone. This album was getting praised before it came out that she was actually on drugs— the fact is that it became POPULAR afterwards. I heard the CD before I really understood the gravity of her addition and probably would have shied away if all this had come out– but I am glad that I didn’t. I too love Ledsi and I agree that awards should abound, but that does not take away from Amy. This is after all a mainstream institution (music academy) and they give us our categories— ones that Amy did NOT win in. We know that we have to have our own to get it appreciated. It ain’t right, it is!! So why blame the artist for living her life and making the kind of music that feels right to her. And @84 Natalie was getting awards and accolades as she was delving deeper and deeper into drugs.

Oh and it is common for Best New Artist to have released music before they are entered into this category. Amy did release Frank before Back in Black, but that was not a U.S. release yet. Back in Black was the first CD that was put out stateside. The Grammys are an American award.

Wow @ Aretha!… She she own the copyrights™ to the term “The Queen?” I think not… Some people see her as the queen and other folk might see Tina as Queen – big whoop… Re needs to concentrate on loosing weight and trying to at LEAST look HALF way as good as Tina does…

And Nat? I truly wish she would fall back… If that’s the case then, she wouldn’t have ANY CREDIT WHAT SO EVER b/c during her “Heyday – she was a str8 Coke, Base, Crackhead”…

Beyonce’s introduction was less about a sincere homage and more about putting the perfect words in the perfect lines so as not to lose the beat to her own ridiculous diddies.
As for Natalie’s comment. Amy has studied jazz for years and she’s written the most sincere, inner-directed, and prolific lyrics. And, anyone who would dare use her personal life as a wrench is a hater. I’m for Amy all the way and I look forward to her next cd (although it may take a few years)…SMH@haters. People throw that word around here because they can’t stand seeing negative comments about their favorite artist, but when it’s truly a case of “hating” nobody gets it…

And, Tina is not Beyonce’s idol. She likes the way Tina dances…she had that same feeling all of us had when we saw Angela Basset doing “Proud Mary” and then when we saw the actual live clip of Tina Turner and her dancers going crazy… And, I think this because watching Beyonce during that performance you could tell that the similarities end with the dancing. Her voice does NOT sound like Tina’s, their sounds couldn’t be more different. So, it’s funny that this Aretha thing should come up…because when I heard Beyonce’s voice shrieking and falling away from Tina’s, I thought Beyonce should have been in the Aretha performance…her voice is more R&B, it is NOT Rock and Roll…She was like a girl doing karaoke up there with Tina.
