QUOTES OF THE WEEK: ARETHA ON THE GRAMMYS / NATALIE ON AMY’S WIN

Wednesday, February 13, 2008

Sure doesn’t feel like the Grammys is over when people are still talking about it. Naturally since it was music’s “biggest night”, a lot of people have things to say.

One of those people were Aretha Franklin who seemed a tad offended at Beyonce and the rest of the Grammys for calling Tina Turner “the Queen” during her performance:

“I am not sure of whose toes I may have stepped on or whose ego I may have bruised between the Grammy writers and Beyoncé, however I dismissed it as a cheap shot for controversy. In addition to that, I thank the Grammys and the voting academy for my 20th Grammy and love to Beyoncé anyway.”

Okay, so the real Queen has spoken I suppose?…

Another famed artist spoke on the Grammys and has been receiving lots of attention for her opinion. Natalie Cole expressed her unhappiness with Amy Winehouse’s wins at ceremony. She said in this video and to people magazine at a Grammy party:

“I don’t think she should have won. I think it sends a bad message to our young people who are trying to get into this business, the ones who are trying to do it right and really trying to keep themselves together. We have to stop rewarding bad behavior.”

“I’m sorry. I think the girl is talented, gifted, but it’s not right for her to be able to have her cake and eat it too. She needs to get herself together.”

I mean, she could die. This isn’t something that’s cute and fun just to throw around in the press. The girl really has a problem, and I think for those of us who have been in the business long enough, we know the sacrifice it takes. This is about discipline and hard work, and you don’t get to just do your drugs and go onstage and get rewarded.”

I hear Natalie and I’m also not on the Winehouse bandwagon - but, the girl still walks away with five awards in the end.

Natalie needs to shut the fuck up because shes done drugs as well and Amy deserved those grammys its just a pity it wasnt 6, if shes gonna hate she might as well hate across the board because Amy isn’t the first person to do drugs and she wont be the last. Mary, Whitney, Billie Holiday,Ray Charles and countless other people have done drugs and have won awards so whats her beef??? and her awards where for her contribution to music NOT what she does in her spare time. It werent no role model of the year award.

I can see where Aretha might be offended, but I am sure Beyonce did not mean it in a bad way. Aretha is the queen! Tina is more rock and roll, not so much R & B. As for Natalie, she needs to sit down. I remeber when she was a coke head during her heyday. I might not agree with everything that Amy does, but there is no denying she is talented. Hell if we were to judge all the artists and not give them awards, buy theis CDs or give them accolades because they have a substance abuse problem, then the industry would shut down. The entertainment industry is full of addicts, users and law breakers. the only person Amy is hurting is herself. As long as she does not get away with doing anything that involves hurting someone else, then those are her demons to deal with. Natalie is just trying to get attention!

Well, I guess Natalie knows of what she speaks–being a former coke addict herself. She had to get it together and basically start over due to her drug addiction. She was on drugs so bad, her son almost drowned, she was in a hotel room that was on fire and according to the movie, she was too high to even notice. She had to get it together and she basically did it by herself. She built her career back up and went on to record the Unforgettable album (the duets with her dad), that went on to win her multiple Grammys and earn herself back the respect in the music industry. So she know of what she speaks, she’s been where Amy is now.

I II agree whole heartedly with Ms. Cole. This is ridiculous. I have never been so upset about the grammys. I am not trying to say that Amy Winehouse hasnt got talent because its obvious that she has a gift. But she really does need to get herself together and in my opinion its a slap in the face to those artists who work hard at their craft and keep themselves clean. They are the ones that should win the grammys. To be a talented artist, yet also be sober and know how to carry yourself, that is what should be rewarded. I guess the committee that votes on the grammys just wanted to focus on pure talent but it is still very upsetting.

Beyonce was the one doing the tribute…therefore, she has the right to call whoever she wants the Queen…I didnt know it was a law that ppl couldent bestow names on whoever they see fit…Aretha, sit your fat, greasy, a$$ down and clap for someone else for a change. Your comments are a disgrace (as is your apperance).

We all know Beyonce will say anything. She’s always saying something / sounding dumb and speaking without thinking….Aretha need to let that go.

And Natalie know she need to sit down and be quiet. Just cuz Amy going through some things doesn’t mean she shouldn’t get recognition for an obviously GREAT CD..

Well i didnt really take notice to everyone calling Tina the Queen but whatever if Aretha’s offended…even though I think her voice sounded wayyyyyyyyy better than Tina’s still after all these years… and of course Bey would call Tina the Queen sine evryone is always saying she’s the next Tina Turner

You know what I’m not a fan of doing drugs but people need to stop hatin so hard on Whinehouse…I love her music shes actually one of my fav artists and not just cuz of her voice but she keeps it real…Nat is a former crackhead and she made it big and I bet you there are plenty of people in entertainment who are druggies but hide that shit…..perfect example Heath Ledger he was an acclaimed actor with lots of talent blah blah but still a druggie who died from his addiction regardless of how the media wants to interpret his death

#12 if that were the case, then more than half of the artists in the past would not get awards. drugs is everywhere in that industry and the majority of the artists take them. like someone in another post mentioned Ray Charles, Mary J Blige and Whitney Houston all had problems with drugs, but they still got the awards and record sales. Now if someone would have said that Mary should not get an award becasue she was on drugs, then people would be protesting in the streets and calling out all kinds of racism.

U know what, Tom Joyner spoke about this Aretha thing the following day after the Grammys, basically agreeing with Franklin… Who the F&*^ cares? These divas are toooo much, she should be counting her blessings…I really don’t think Beyonce meant disrespect…anyone who is aware of Beyonce would know that Tina Turner is her idol, so in her eyes she is a Queen, what is wrong with that? Whatever Aretha, we kno you a Queen too…but Tina is one too!

Wow… Aretha to me isnt the queen of shit! Her time was decades ago. Tina does have it all. Rocking at 70! Aretha is just egotistic.. she makes me sick!

Sure Aretha has inspired and brought so much to music already but to sit there and think that people are out to get you….

Tina has consistanly been apart of music for many years,…. even before Aretha.

Tina is ledgend and the true queen.

oK IMMA BE A STAN RIGHT NOW AND SAY THAT IT’S NOT HER CRACK HABIT THAT IS BEING REWARDED, THIS GIRL IS REALLY TALENTED. I CAN’T EVEN NAME ALL THE OTHER PAST ARTIST WHO HAVE HAD SOME KIND OF SUBSTANCE PROBLEM THAT HAS BEEN KEPT UNDER WRAPS JUST BECAUSE THE MEDIA (THE PAPS) CRAZED ERROR WE LIVE IN TODAY.

WE CAN LOOK AT BILLIE HOLIDAY, IMAGINE IF THE PAPS FOLLOWED HER AROUND WHAT THEY WOULD HAVE RECORDED. THIS LADY HAD A CRAZY ADDICTION TO HEROINE AND SHE WAS LESBIAN! BUT STILL TO THIS DAY WHEN YOU ASK SOMEONE WHO IS ON THEIR GREATEST FEMALE SINGER’S SIST, BILLIE HOLIDAY IS BOUND TO SHOW UP SOMEWHERE ON THERE.

I DON’T KNOW MUCH ABOUT COLE’S HISTORY IN THE INDUSTRY BUT I KNOW THAT SHE HAD A SERIOUS COKE PROBLEM BACK IN HER EARLY STAGES BUT THE INDUSTRY DIDN’T JUST BLACK LIST HER BECAUSE OF IT. IT’S CLEAR TO ANYBODY WHNEHOUSE NEEDS HELP, SHE IS A CRACKHEAD. BUT, SHE GOT GRAMMY’S BECAUSE SHE PUT OUT A SOLID ALBUM NOT BECAUSE SHE HAD “BEST VIDEO FOR BLOWING ROCKS ON YOUTUBE,” LET’S NOT GET IT TWISTED.

Cloverfield needs to go sit her ass down somewhere, with her Gone with the Wind mimicking ass wanting to wear her house drapes. Tina is the Queen of Rock and Roll, and hell, she got some R&B and Soul in there too. I love Aretha as much as the next person, but she taking this Queen thing too far to the head. It ain’t that serious. To Beyonce, she’s the Queen. Not everybody got to enjoy Big Bird like that. lol. She shouldn’t have looked at it as a slight to her. Let Tina have some shine.

Probably just Jealous she can’t fit what Tina had on…Not that that would stop her from trying to put it on anyway. lol.

D YO, I am with Nothing but love…Natalie did drugs before so what the freak is she ta talking about. Amy Winehouse is a very talented singer, and she need to really fa fall back!!! If that was the case, then no one in the industry should get awards. It i just that Amy’s drug use was public, and other people in the industry wasnt. So with that being said, Natalie go somewhere!!! Also I am feeling Aretha on how she feel, Tina is a great performer but to say she the Queen. Aretha holds that title, so Bey or whoever wrote that intro was out of line. Enough said!!!!

I agree with Natlie Cole whole heatly. The girl is no Tina Marie or Lisa Stanfield. Blacks are trashing on THE GOODIES QUEEN and give Amy praise. How the grammy going to ignore PROMISE and LIKE A BOY and this crackhead gets all the glory. Ciara is the best and the grammy owes her an apology. Ms Franklin looks beautiful.

Aretha is really getting arrogant in her old age. I remember reading an interview in Sister 2 Sister magazine with her. I personally agree with Aretha, but at the same time I do agree with all of you who said that she shouldn’t take it personally. I don’t think it was that serious to point out what Beyonce said. I thought that was immature. Aretha has always been known as THE QUEEN above anyone else, but there are times where tributes to Tina, Dianna Ross, and even Janet will consider them queens as well.

No comment on Natalie… LOL.

Aretha Franklin needs to be ashamed of herself, she’s a 65 year old Woman and she’s releasing a statment about Beyonce referring to Tina as the Queen ?? Bey didn’t say the Queen of soul, she just said the Queen… Nobody is denying that Aretha is the Queen of Soul.. but this is real petty

38.

Does she do a press release when Mary J. is referred to as a Queen?

She’s just upset that Tina’s performance is getting rave reviews and people are commenting on how great she looks for her age. I don’t think this has anything to do with the Grammy writers or Beyonce it’s all about a bruised ego.

Beyonce was doing an intro for and performing with Tina Turner, NOT ARETHA FRANKLIN! I mean, did she expect Beyonce to half a$$ it on Aretha’s account? How selfish and stupid is that! OK, Tina is from a completely different genre of music, so Retha, puhlease!!! that was kind of childish to even acknowledge that. Everyone knows that ur the QUEEN of soul, and r&b, and gospel, and thin spaghetti strapped dresses!!! LOL.. sorry I had to do it!!

As for Natalie: she of all people should be empathetic to Amy’s situation. She acts as if she is better then her, y, because she smoked crack!? Drugs are drugs and she is being awarded for her talent, not necessarily the way she choses to live her life. You could catch a glimpse of happiness and a little bit of hope in Amy’s eyes when it was announced that she was the winner. It sounds to me like a little bitterness on Natalie’s end.

Yes, I don’t know WHY Aretha felt the need to look so ignorant! Tina has had that title FOR YEARS!!! Same as Aretha has had hers! Bee was performing with Tina…..YES a Queen! And Aretha is a Queen certainly! And so is Gloris nor(Queen of Disco) and Mary J Blige(Queen of Hip Hop soul)…..did Aretha drink too many cocktails at the party? Beyonce was not taking a cheap shot!

That is petty on Aretha…..damn!Nobody was slighting her!

This radio host I listen to wondered if Aretha would get her panties caught up over this on Monday. Apparently, they know how she’s behaved in the past. Then, someone called up and said Beyonce gets a “pass” because Tina Turner has always been called the “Queen of Rock and Roll,” while Aretha is the “Queen of Soul.”

So, I am not surprised that she said this. But, then again, I AM!!!! I mean, she sounds delusional.

Today, though, someone on the radio said she had a pre-Grammy party but would not let Alicia Keys and other people sing for fear of “upstaging” her. She only let “no name” artists perform. It was Page 6 or one of the New York rags that printed this. Aretha is a TRIP!!

Honestly!!! Natali Cole is being rediculous! Amy won those awards because of her talent as a singer as a musician. I don’t know about anybody else but i didnt hear Amy win an award for smoking and sniff coke…i don’t believe that was one of the categories! Yeah, Am does have to get her life together, but i don’t think Natalie cole shitin in her talent is gonna help her any bit!!!

i completely agree with Natalie..the awards show may have been for Amy’s talent, but she is heading down a path that could ultimately take her life..What would Natalie have to hate on ? She’s a grown ass woman who has lived that life lready. i think she is being (like most elders) looking out for the younger people. I believe she has her best interest @ heart. And to say that her talent has nothing to do with her lifestyle, that talent could be destroyed if she doesn’t wise up. R Kelly has talent, but he has problems as well…Whenever ur in the media, ur personal life will always take affect to what ur doing in the lime light..That’s life

I love Aretha and all as the Queen of Soul. But why can’t Tina be the Queen of Rock and Roll? I mean they are apples and oranges. Tina deserves the honor for the way she has persevered and endured through the years and I believe that Beyonce~ was just being respectful to that. I mean everybody else names themselves the princess of this and the King of that? I’m gonna name myself the Grand Duchess of Funk!

52.

NATALIE IS RIGHT!

Wednesday, February 13, 2008 /

First off, NATALIE IS RIGHT EVERYONE!

I can see where people are coming from with the idea that the Grammy’s award talent..yes that’s “true”.. And I also understand that there were/are many entertainers on drugs that are successful and get awards too!
BUT I THINK SOME FOLKS ARE MISUNDERSTANDING NATALIE when they suggest that she is “calling the Kettle Black”. Natalie HAS BEEN THERE and was one of the ones that pulled herself up by the reigns to change her life for the better and win her respect back from the industry.

I think Natalie’s point was that, although Amy is talented, there is no way in hell that she should be getting Grammy’s for PROMOTING A MESSAGE TO YOUNG PEOPLE THAT DOING DRUGS AND NOT SEEKING HELP IS COOL!

I love the song too, it’s grown on me.. BUT IT IS SENDING THE WRONG MESSAGE TO PEOPLE!

AMY should have gotten an award for the album as a whole, or best new artist.. but DONT GIVE HER A GRAMMY FOR THAT REHAB SONG alone.

Love n Peace,
Nige.

p.s– on Aretha, listen to #15.. Beyonce is totally awesome, talented and we all know beautiful.. but she’s not the most intelligent or eloquent woman . Anything “off” will come out of her mouth sometimes..Like when she was on Oprah and couldn’t tell Oprah what’s her favorite book to read. So embarrassing.

aretha needs to sit the hell down. I can’t believe she would stoop so low. He cheap shot was obviously menat to be an insult to poor Tina as well. Then her little speech at the end saying she has love for Beyonce anyway. She is truly a diva. As everyone else said should she have acknowledged Aretha as the true queen then give a half assed intro for Tina or should she have scrapped the whole intro altogether to spare Aretha’s feelings

58.

aprilm

Wednesday, February 13, 2008 /

I think the reason Aretha got offended was because when Beyonce was doing the introduction she was saying the names of alot of singers who made history in the music industry..then stated, Tina was the greatest of them all and had some type of affect on all of them and she influenced them…which was not the case. Tina Turner influenced alot of singers, but not Aretha. Think about it, Tina’s style and Aretha’s are soooo different. I luv Tina, but nobody has ever called her the queen…and Beyonce looks up to her so thats more the reason of why she did it..she wants to be just like her. I enjoyed their performance. On the other hand, it was kind of immature for Aretha to speak on it. Some words are left better unspoken…

#51…that’s not what Natalie said. Say what you mean..mean what you say. She is the pot calling the kettle black. I understand she went thru the same, but pretentiousness is NOT the way to go, very hypocritical. If we stopped awarding those with drug/personal issues on ANY award show…there wouldn’t be a grammy’s, an academy awards, mtv awards nor BET awards. She was not given a “perfect home life” or “DARE” award. She was rewarded for a stellar album & hit song that topped the charts. No amount of rock can take that away.

Tina and Aretha are both Queens of two different genres. I think Natalie Cole is not just referring to her drug habit. It’s the content of her music on top of doing drugs. It’d be one thing to say I’m not going to rehab in a song for artistic expression, but to then be doing drugs in real life too is like saying you really do think that you’re no good or that you shouldn’t go to rehab if you have a problem.

I must say that you people are rude. You do not need to insult the woman’s weight. Talk about what she said and not her weight. You all need to be taught how to RESPECT your elders.

I have nothing to say about Natalie Cole’s statement. I love Amy winehouse and she is one the few talented artists of our time. I can listen to her CD without skipping any track. However, Aretha should not take it personally. All these top female icons are QUEENS and she did not expect Beyonce to say “to the other queen”. Why the stress? There is space for everyone to reign.

The Queen of what? Aretha is the Queen of Soul, and Tina is the Queen of Rock & Blues, maybe? There are different genres of music. So, Aretha is trippin.

I agree with Natalie Cole, somewhat, but a Grammy award is based on MUSIC, not a artist’s demons. Amy ain’t the first artist who is strung out. The list goes on: Joplin, Hendrix, Sly (& the family stone), Rick James, Cobain…etc, etc.

69.

Why is Aretha making a big deal of this? The whole point of the Tina/Beyonce duo was for Beyonce to somewhat pay tribute to someone that influenced her. Beyonce is entitled to her opinion. If she appreciates Tina’s music more then that’s her choice. I doubt she was trying to dis Aretha. Hell, I like Tina’s music and energy more so than Aretha but it doesn’t mean its a dis to Aretha.

Aretha is the queen…No mistaking it. But I think Beyonce didn’t mean it out of the content to disrespect Aretha…heck I bet she wasn’t even thinking about Aretha when she said it so I don’t think it was a derogatory statement. We all know Aretha will blow Tina out of any water. I am sure even Tina knows this but that statement was just to big up Tina and Beyonce admiration for her. No pun intended Aretha you the queen…trust..

I understand where Natalie is coming from but I don’t think it would be consistent and valid to our music history when in fact many other artist in the past had substance abuse problem and they still performed and received many awards. IE..Ray Charles, Whitney..even Natalie herself and list of other that we may or may not know not to even mention Rock n Roll artist and other genres. So Amy is talented and she deserves some of those awards I will admit but maybe not 5 but who cares. Its always tomorrow even though its not promise.

i don’t think Natalie was acting holier than thou or anything at all. I understand what she’s saying. She was being concerned, and probably wish somebody said it to her when she was younger.

Amy is talented, Natalie agrees with that. But right now what they should be doing is getting her help. Amy could have many many years in the industry, if they can save her now. She has plenty of time to get awards, let her focus on getting help and getting clean, so she can win more. Its sorta like they’d rather watch her die, as long as they can get that pain and art out of her music, who gives a fuck. As long as they got that, let her die. And thats so wrong, but it is the music industry. Use you for what five seconds, then throw you away.

I don’t there is a need to disrespect Aretha or Natalie. You can disagree with them and still respect them. Let’s get our selves together. They opened or should I say kicked down the doors for these young statlets now to have what they have so show some respect to them.

Let’s wait and see if these young ladies will be around 30 plus years from now.

Natalie Cole was on drugs for MANY MANY MANY years, but that didn’t take away from her God given talent. She was in the same position Amy is in now. I looked at Amy perform and anyone can tell she getting better. And YOU could tell she really was in shock for winning…like SHE finally believes she talented. Natalie Cole can’t judge anyone..that’s GOD’s job! She was awarded for her GOD GIVEN TALENT, SHE WAS AWARDED BECAUSE THAT WAS ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS OF 07!!! She just needs to PRAY for AMY recovery..JUST LIKE SOMEONE PRAYED FOR HER!!!!

and ARETHA needs to CHECK HER BIG ASS EGO….and cover up them BIG ASS COW BREAST!!! its not that damn serious…it was just for the performance..DAMN!
