QUOTES OF THE WEEK: ARETHA ON THE GRAMMYS / NATALIE ON AMY’S WIN
Wednesday, February 13, 2008

Sure doesn’t feel like the Grammys is over when people are still talking about it. Naturally since it was music’s “biggest night”, a lot of people have things to say.
One of those people were Aretha Franklin who seemed a tad offended at Beyonce and the rest of the Grammys for calling Tina Turner “the Queen” during her performance:
“I am not sure of whose toes I may have stepped on or whose ego I may have bruised between the Grammy writers and Beyoncé, however I dismissed it as a cheap shot for controversy. In addition to that, I thank the Grammys and the voting academy for my 20th Grammy and love to Beyoncé anyway.”
Okay, so the real Queen has spoken I suppose?…

Another famed artist spoke on the Grammys and has been receiving lots of attention for her opinion. Natalie Cole expressed her unhappiness with Amy Winehouse’s wins at ceremony. She said in this video and to people magazine at a Grammy party:
“I don’t think she should have won. I think it sends a bad message to our young people who are trying to get into this business, the ones who are trying to do it right and really trying to keep themselves together. We have to stop rewarding bad behavior.”
“I’m sorry. I think the girl is talented, gifted, but it’s not right for her to be able to have her cake and eat it too. She needs to get herself together.”
I mean, she could die. This isn’t something that’s cute and fun just to throw around in the press. The girl really has a problem, and I think for those of us who have been in the business long enough, we know the sacrifice it takes. This is about discipline and hard work, and you don’t get to just do your drugs and go onstage and get rewarded.”
I hear Natalie and I’m also not on the Winehouse bandwagon - but, the girl still walks away with five awards in the end.

ARTHEA FRANKLIN WILL ALWAYS BE THE QUEEN, PER MY MOM WHO IS 75 YEARS OLD; AND YOU YOUNG FOLKS WILL NEVER CHANGE THAT…
AND I HAVE TO AGREE WITH MY MOM 100%
TINA WILL ALWAYS BE KNOWN AS, IKE AND TINA TURNER, AND THAT WILL NEVER CHANGE
SINCE WHEN DO YOU GET A GRAMMY FOR BEING A ROLE MODEL…I TOTALLY DISAGREE WITH NATALIE COLE…AMY’S DESERVE EVERY GRAMMY SHE RECEIVED..ALL 5 OF THEM..NO FEMALE ARTIST PUT OUT A BETTER CD THAN AMY IN 2007..I KNOW YOU WANTED BEYONCE TO WIN OR RIHANNA BUT SORRY, BEYONCE’S B-DAY CD WAS A TOTAL MESS AND RIHANNA’S CD GOOD GIRL (WHATEVERY IT WAS CALLED) WAS FOR THE KIDS.
AMY’S DRUG PROBLEM HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HOW WELL HER CD SOLD IN THE UK AND IN THE US.
IF WE ARE GOING TO START GIVING OUT GRAMMIES BASED ON YOUR PERSONAL LIFE…WE WILL NEVER HAVE A WINNER….

I kinda have to agree with Natalie a little, though she sounds like she’s complaining. But I don’t think Amy deserved all of those awards. Maybe 2 or 3, but not Record of the Year. Just about every other artist in that category had single’s that were stronger, some before “Rehab” was released to the radio. You see, one thing about the Grammys, they tend to reward the underdogs a lot. It’s like last year when the Dixie Chicks won like Record, Song, and Album of the year, when “I’m Not Ready To Make Nice” wasn’t big for it’s vocals, but for it’s controversy. The Chicks were under fire soooooo much the previous year, that not many people wanted to see them win, so thats why The Recording Academy gave them those awards for the benefit. So really Amy winning all those this year was not surprising. Hey if Britney had all those nominations, she would probably win too. And just a little heads up to the Recording Academy, Amy is NOT a new artist, she is just new to the U.S.. So Best New Artist was a little off. Once again, I’m not haten,’ whether yall see that or not, I’m just speaking the truth. As far as Aretha goes, all I can say is that she has been acting like a true “diva” these days.

I REALLY CAN’T BELIEVE ARETHA IS ACTING LIKE THIS. ARETHA HAS BEEN DUBBED “THE QUEEN OF SOUL” AND TINA HAS BEEN DUBBED “THE QUEEN OF ROCK AND ROLL” SHE ACTS AS THOUGH BEYONCE CALLED TINA THE QUEEN OF SOUL OR SOMETHING. I HONESTLY BELIEVE THAT ARETHA IS JUST BEING CATTY FOR SOME REASON OR ANOTHER. SHE DID INCLUDE HER IN THE ROL CALL OF GREATS AT THE BEGINNING! I SWEAR BEYONCE CAN NOT WIN FOR LOSING WITH SOME PEOPLE.

MY BAD, I DON’T THINK NATALIE THOUGHT ABOUT WHAT SHE SAID. AMY WINEHOUSE RECIEVED HER GRAMMYS FOR HER MUSIC, NOT FOR THE WAY SHE LIVES HER LIFE. SHE SHEOULD REALLY LOOK BACK ON HER OWN LIFE BEFORE CASTING STONES. WE ALL HAVE OUR OWN CROSSES TO BEAR.

GGet em Retha! Beyonce should have known better. She is always trying to impress people but it usual turns into her putting her foot in her mouth. We all know who the Queen of Soul is so why get on stage talking about Tina is the Queen.
A
AAs for Natalie. she made a valid point. In Hollywood, it’s always those on the edge that are put on a pedostal and that is not a good message to send to the world, or those people going through problems. Why would you want to do better if you know your acting out is what people respond too? The industry really needs to check itself. They recognize the bad much more than the good.

Now Mrs. Cole knows she’s wrong for making that statement. According to a Rock Docks film that appeared on VH1 a few years back about Natalie’s young adult life, the singer also experimented with drugs. So how then, can she make statements about Amy, saying: She doesn’t deserve to win until she “gets herself together.” Pleasssseee, Mrs. Cole didn’t have herself together back in the day either.
For the record, all Mrs. Cole needs to do is: SHOW SOME DAMN MERCY to Winehouse and other entertainers like her. After all, she has been in the same boat that they’re in.

Everybody knows that Aretha is the Queen of Soul. So no harm done. Beyonce is a robot. She is programmed to say whatever the Grammy’s want her to say. It wasn’t her fault and Miss Aretha said she loved her anyway. She knows that Bey ain’t at fault. But the Grammy’s know that Tina may be the Queen of Soul Rock but she ain’t never been the Queen of Soul - and for them to write “the True Queen of Soul” was a tad bit out of taste. The Grammy’s know better.
Aretha need to do something about that body though for real!
Natalie was in the same shoes as Amy Winehouse. Fall back Miss Cole!

Aretha is the Queen of Soul. Tina is the Queen of Rock & Roll.
Now I’m by NO means a Beyonce fan, and I never thought I’d be defending her, but the fact of the matter is, she meant no harm in what she was saying. It’s clear that Tina is a major influence for her. I’d even go as far to say that had What’s Love Got To Do With It had not already been made, she would most likely be the best choice to portray Tina on the screen based on her energy alone. I think she merely felt like she wanted to pay homage to who is the queen in HER eyes, and that’s her right to say so.
As for Natalie, well, I guess that she’s partly right. Natalie didn’t get her accolades until she cleaned up HER act. And for the record, Keith Richards even called Amy out, and he just about invented he-ron! Hell, he even had his blood changed a few times! Now if a fiend that big is calling you out, well…
But anyway, that all moot, people. That’s why they call it Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll. It’s virtually impossible to stay pure in that industry. As for Amy Winehouse, somebody made a good point about Billie Holliday, so I tend to agree. She got it based on her art, or whatever criteria that academy uses to determine winners. I mostly don’t agree with Grammy’s anyway. So if Whitney was up for one last year, would we tell her to give it back caused she was all “rock’d” out?
Back to Amy Winehouse: She’s okay, but VERY overrated. The industry tends to praise white artists who are performing retro soul and new R&B (Justin Timberfake), when we have black artists who are doing it better. This goes all the back to the Elvis and Pat Boone days!
Brooklyn’s Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings have been doing retro soul funk for years now, and Sharon’s light years better than Amy. Check out the You Tube clip. They are just starting to get the attention they deserve. And by the way, Ledisi should have won Best New Artist. Her clip is below Sharon’s.
Rant completed.

Wow…Aretha is the queen…but I didn’t think anything of it. I didn’t think artists really took those titles seriously. If you know who are and what you have contributed to music no one can really truely take your title so why trip? Natalie Cole is right, but it just doesn’t sound right coming from a drug user even though she would know more about the situation.

Tina Turner Queen of Rock and Roll
Aretha Franklin Queen of Soul
Diana Ross Queen of Motown
Mahalia Jackson Queen of Gospel
Gloria G.a.y.nor Queen of Disco
Bessie Smith Empress of the Blues
Queen Latifah Queen of Rap
Mary J Blige Queen of Hiphop/Soul
Chaka Khan Queen of Funk
Any of these ladies could have been introduced as a Queen or what have you on the Grammys! If you want to be specific, add the “of whatever” but that Queen of nickname has been rolling around FOREVER, and is unofficial as hell–so Aretha is tripping,Diana Ross was tripping….just because the word Queen is used when they are in the audience does not mean they are the ONLY Queens there!
Hell, Gladys Knight and Patti Labelle are Legends, and Queens of SOMETHING, good as THEY can sing! If I introduce them somewhere, HELL yeah, I would say the QUEEN word! Donna Summer…..hell yeah, that is a QUEEN of some division of music right there–I always disagreed with the Gloria G.a.y.nor Queen of Disco title myself–Donna RULED the Disco–period!
No need to be so petty!
And get it right…..Queen of the night was Amy Winehouse in terms of awards! Anybody can be Queen for a day!
Aretha is TOO beloved, too recognized and too honored for all this! How could she feel threatened because Beyonce called TIna a queen? Boggles the mind…..Beyonce even said Aretha’s name in her list of legends…aint no need to genuflect to Aretha during a TINA tribute! Her shine was coming and was more involved than Tina’s….damn! Does she need a crowning during the ceremony to feel secure?
But Aretha has beefed with half the people up there–her spite againist Gladys Knight, Patty and OTHERS(including Luther!) is also a Legend….not the good kind!

You are so right. I look at Britney Spears and Amy both are walking disasters and it seems as if no one is really trying to help them. As long as the ycan continue to make hit records let them continue to be drugged out.
Who can speak better than Natalie on the subject. She has been down that road heself and experience is the BEST TEACHER. I believe what Natalie is trying to say to Amy is to get help for yourself so you can have that longevity. Because at the rate she is going now she want be around to much longer.

Aretha and Tina are both Queens, Queen of Soul and Queen of Rock n Roll, respectively.
I agree with the great Natalie Cole. Maybe she’s a hypocrite but she’s telling the truth!
There are many discraces concerning the Grammy’s. I’m still shocked that Herbie Hancock’s “Album of the Year” award was ONLY the second time in Grammys history that a Jazz album was given that award. Wow, you mean to tell me that with all of the great Jazz artists and albums history, only two have won that coveted award??? Wow…speechless…

Wednesday, February 13, 2008 /
No disrespect Tianna, but either this transcript is sugar coated or you must not have seen the interview Natalie did with Fox News. Her (Natalie’s) direct quote was:
“I don’t think she deserved it. I think she needs to get her life together first and then get the awards later. You don’t get awarded for bad behavior. That’s the problem. We’re teaching young folks that they get awarded for being crazy. I’m not too happy about that, but I wish her luck and hopes she gets it together.”
Now everyone is entitled to their own opinion but to call someone crazy & undeserving is RUDE and DISRESPECTFUL. If she was trying to uplift/ speak wisdom to Amy from experience then that would be fine but Natalie came off as a condescending b*tch
@51 and all the other nay-sayers:
I don’t care WHAT Amy did..no one can honestly say that “Back to Black” wasn’t a bomb @ss album!!!! When someone at the age of 23 can put out an album of that magnitude (she wrote every song on the album, by the way) it needs to be rewarded!! You can say what you want but IMO when a white, Jewish woman from England goes platinum in the US her talent speaks for itself.
oh and @63:
Amy Winehouse IS currently in rehab– hence her issues getting a VISA to come to the US…

1. Ms. Cole needs to tap the breaks on that mug. Amy won based on her music, not her life choices, however warped and bad they may be. She deserved those awards because she produced a damn good album, which is all that matters at the Grammys. I could see Nat’s point if Amy made some sorry ass music and still won, but that’s not how it went down.

iiiWhen you are talking about music the word QUEEN is synonymous with Arethia TFranklin. This why shows have writers; a writer would have caught that. The intro was so over the top, naming all these women then saying only one embodies all of these women talent all together. Tina and Aretha are both Queens of two different genres. I think Natalie Cole is not just referring to her drug habit. It’s the content of her music on top of doing drugs. It’d be one thing to say I’m not going to rehab in a song for artistic expression, but to then be doing drugs in real life too is like saying you really do think that you’re no good or that you shouldn’t go to rehab if you have a problem.

The grammy shouldnt be based on if the artist is a drug addict or not, its based on musical talent and accomplishments. Amy has both musical talent and accomplished a hell of a good album. Even her 1st album frank should of recieved an grammy and she wasnt even an addict then! Her personal life has nothing to do with the grammys. First of all, if you’re white and reaping all the accolades of being “the savior of soul” which is what she has basically been labeled by the white press, then I wan t to see you contribute something back to or embrace my culture. The only white soul singer in my book who’s donew this was Teena Marie. I don’t feel any connection with Crackhouse other than the fact that she supposedly sounds soulful.
Please.
Like I said before, there are MANY black singers out there who need our support MORE than she does, who DON’T get played on the radio because we don’t SUPPORT them. And they sound better than this hiccuping-frog-sounding poseur.
Again, I’ll note it:
Ledisi
Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings
N’Dambi (former back up singer for Erykah Badu)
Vivian Green (former back up for Jill Scott)
So people, DO NOT tell me that Amy Winehouse put out the definitive soul record last year if you cannot check thew facts and haven’t heard what these sisters bring to the table. No, not all of them released a new record last year (I believe Vivian & N’Dambi haven’t), but do yourselves a favor and get off the Crackhouse pipe for a minute and check out the real shit! Trust me, it’s better.

Psssht, Natalie betta worq that hipocrisy potty kettle style. Don’t critisize Amy when you done drugs and won Grammy’s during that period. And she should stop assuming that youngins are really thinkin that doing drugs and acting bad will win them Grammies. Fall back, honey.

I only tossed Joss Stone in there as a point of reference. I can tolerate her a little more than Winehouse, in terms of soul, I guess. But STILL…………

Sometimes it’s better to be seen and not heard but in Aretha’s case, I could have done without seeing her or hearing that petty mess she talking. Who is to say that either is the queen. Way too old to be hating on others. I say PATTI IS THE QUEEN. JMO
Now about Natalie, she knows her nose is burnt out in the middle but she plus, I am not saying Amy should be recognized for her drug problem but you can’t say she doesn’t deserve something for her talent and that album.

Noted. But what disturbs me most is her musical CLASSIFICATION here and in the press in general.
And in the end, it’s just an opinion. I just get hype when I feel like true soul singers are being ignored.

I sorta agree with you. Everyone knows there are more talented people than those in the limelight out there, and that what it takes to make it is to stand out from the rest. But how you gon badmouth Amy for being? Others are very deserving too, but you can’t say she doesn’t sing her heart out. Look up her live performances of Love is a Losing game.
What I don’t understand about your comment is, why you pick only Joss Stone and Amy Winehouse. Because they’re white? Get outta here. You can’t say it’s because the crowd prefers them cuz they pretty n lightskinned, cuz Amy ain’t exactly the standard pretty chick.

And YES. If you read all of her reviews, it IS suggested that she put out the “definitive” soul album. That’s what all her hype is based on. The awards issue is relative.

She deserved them. I’m not only saying this because i stans for her but because she makes GREAT music..”Rehab” was a popular song in the states…so was her album.
I dont get it. In that case, Elvis and Ray Charles don’t deserve any grammys or special awards too.

I understand what your sayin but if those artists aren’t being promoted thats not Amy’s fault its the record labels fault thats what their there for, to promote their artists, people have to KNOW their records are out in order for people to buy them, people do buy good music they just have to KNOW its out.

Aretha is so full of herself maybe that’s why she looks like a Macy’s Thanksgiving day float. QUEEN come on! Where was I when she had her coronation? everyone is entittle to their own opinion and hell we all have our favorites…I think
Mary J. Blige… Hip-Hop Queen
Rihanna……Pop Queen
Leontyne Price….Opera Queen
Latifah, Whitney, Patti LaBelle, Tina turner….Queen period etc.etc.
We as Black people really suffer from the crabs in a barrel mentality. I mean there is enough room and talent for us to honor, exult and call whomever we want King or Queen…for goodness sake !
As far as Natalie cole is concerned, part of me feels like she has the right to speak because she has walked in those same steps and knows EXACTLY what Amy Winehouse is going through, but because she knows first hand I would think she’d be a little more compassionate and reach out to Amy or enlighten the rest of us on how hard it is to overcome a drug-addition.

LOL. Sorry, but yes. Amy’s performance is NOTHING compared to Sharon Jones or Ledisi. And YES, it DOES piss me off that white artists get major soul press and more deserving black artists don’t. Oh, and obviously, you’re not much of a purist. So I’ll give a nugget if it will appease you: Dusty Springfield did it better than Winehouse.
And your reponse to me sounded fine at first, but please hold back on the rude phrases. I WON’T get out of here. And you really don’t want to travel THAT road, do you?….
It’s my opinion, I feel that it’s right for me, and you can’t change that.

I somewhat agree with Natile. I like Amy but 5 grammy’s was a lot I don’t think musically she should have one all of them she good but I think that her drama is making her more famous than her music. But who cares they give grammy’s and nominations to anybody so atleast a decent artist took them home.
We all know bad behavior from white young celebs gets rewarded look at Paris Hilton get arrested for mutiple DUI’s comes out of jail making millions on intervies. Britney getting million dollar offers to talk about her problems that’s the way the industry has chosen to work.

AMY WHO????????
Wednesday, February 13, 2008 /
First of all Aretha is old enough to do and say what she wants and the performace I thought with Tina and Beyonce was not all thatgreat. Aretha as well as others paved the way so that all these young school girls like Bey could be doing what they do now. Futhermore you disrespectful whit or black young people stop calling her names, let someone talk abotu your moms and female family members that way. You all are rude and sick and personally we can say what we want in the hood about our own but your white asses better be glad you got the internet to hide behind.
Amy Whinehouse with her ugly anorexic loking behind id not anyone souls singer. Hellt he dope fiend really can’t sing. She did not deserve 5 grammy wins like someone said there were songs out here stronger than hers been out less time than two years. The grammys is whack. Let me tell you if any black oersons behavior had been as open in drug use as Amys they may hve gottten nominated but not 5 awards. Natalie had to get her ac together.
This industry is racist and hypocritical.Using crack, herione is illegal not only is she a drug addict but she is a criminal.
They statement she mad about Blake let me know as soon as he gets out she is going to tell the grammy nods to kiss her ass and be back on the pipe.Amy is not fooling anyone but you.Rehab should not have been awarded.

Everytime I get on here and theres a thread that has the slightest bit to do with Beyonce, I know I’m gonna read a ton of ignorant ass people, making themselves sound stupid, Beyonce has the right to say anything she wants, and I’m sorry but Tina is AMAZING, and shit if Bey thinks shes the Queen then so be it… ARETHA… get over ALLLLLL of yourself, I know its ALOT, but try… so what you can scream loud enough to fill a whole arena, or eat 20,000 spectators out of house and home, you still aint shit, but a FAT, GREASY ASS WHALE who can sing granted, but OMG, whatever your the queen of FAT, PIE EATING CONTESTS, and HORRIBLE REVEALING COSTUMES…. and all you ignorant ass people who thought Beyonce was “Wrong”……. go fuck yourselves… Beyonce is the one you all love to hate… but the truth of the matter is….
ONLY Insecure women, and gay men (because they usually want to be her) hate Beyonce, I hate to put it out there like that… but hell its true. Hate is a very strong word… its okay not to care for someone or their music, but to hate someone you really know nothing about is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. You envy Beyonce, and thats why you have nothing but Negative things to say, if you JUST didnt care for her, you wouldnt even stop to comment, but all of you Haters Envy her, because you wanna be just like her !

Point blank Amy’s cd was the shit and it out did those other albums in the category…hands down you gotta give credit where credit is due. Even though her performance had “strung out” all on her face…shiiittt…how many spectacular artists do you know haven’t been strung out. Look at Whitney, beautiful voice and on drugs. Not saying that it’s right..but you can’t take away someone’s talent because of what they do in their spare time.

aretha is too grown for that nonsense
Tina and Aretha do not sing the same types of music so Aretha could be the queen of what she does and Tina the queen of what she does..damn can’t we all just get along
