Well, I guess Natalie knows of what she speaks–being a former coke addict herself. She had to get it together and basically start over due to her drug addiction. She was on drugs so bad, her son almost drowned, she was in a hotel room that was on fire and according to the movie, she was too high to even notice. She had to get it together and she basically did it by herself. She built her career back up and went on to record the Unforgettable album (the duets with her dad), that went on to win her multiple Grammys and earn herself back the respect in the music industry. So she know of what she speaks, she’s been where Amy is now.

I II agree whole heartedly with Ms. Cole. This is ridiculous. I have never been so upset about the grammys. I am not trying to say that Amy Winehouse hasnt got talent because its obvious that she has a gift. But she really does need to get herself together and in my opinion its a slap in the face to those artists who work hard at their craft and keep themselves clean. They are the ones that should win the grammys. To be a talented artist, yet also be sober and know how to carry yourself, that is what should be rewarded. I guess the committee that votes on the grammys just wanted to focus on pure talent but it is still very upsetting.

#12 if that were the case, then more than half of the artists in the past would not get awards. drugs is everywhere in that industry and the majority of the artists take them. like someone in another post mentioned Ray Charles, Mary J Blige and Whitney Houston all had problems with drugs, but they still got the awards and record sales. Now if someone would have said that Mary should not get an award becasue she was on drugs, then people would be protesting in the streets and calling out all kinds of racism.

I think the reason Aretha got offended was because when Beyonce was doing the introduction she was saying the names of alot of singers who made history in the music industry..then stated, Tina was the greatest of them all and had some type of affect on all of them and she influenced them…which was not the case. I kinda have to agree with Natalie a little, though she sounds like she’s complaining. But I don’t think Amy deserved all of those awards. Maybe 2 or 3, but not Record of the Year. Just about every other artist in that category had single’s that were stronger, some before “Rehab” was released to the radio. You see, one thing about the Grammys, they tend to reward the underdogs a lot. It’s like last year when the Dixie Chicks won like Record, Song, and Album of the year, when “I’m Not Ready To Make Nice” wasn’t big for it’s vocals, but for it’s controversy. The Chicks were under fire soooooo much the previous year, that not many people wanted to see them win, so thats why The Recording Academy gave them those awards for the benefit. So really Amy winning all those this year was not surprising. Hey if Britney had all those nominations, she would probably win too. And just a little heads up to the Recording Academy, Amy is NOT a new artist, she is just new to the U.S.. So Best New Artist was a little off. Once again, I’m not haten,’ whether yall see that or not, I’m just speaking the truth. As far as Aretha goes, all I can say is that she has been acting like a true “diva” these days.

Back to Amy Winehouse: She’s okay, but VERY overrated. The industry tends to praise white artists who are performing retro soul and new R&B (Justin Timberfake), when we have black artists who are doing it better. This goes all the back to the Elvis and Pat Boone days!

Brooklyn’s Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings have been doing retro soul funk for years now, and Sharon’s light years better than Amy. Check out the You Tube clip. I bought Amy’s album. It wasn’t all that good TO ME. I played it only once. Apart from the song with the Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell sample, nothing compelled me to play it again. Her vocal style was just too ugly sounding. As she began her public slide, I matched the voice to what she was prtraying to the public (spitting at the audience, smoking crack, looking like a dirty, infested dope fiend from Alphabet City, canceling shows), and it made sense. She sounds like how she looks and acts. She just has a nasty, stink, evil vibe.

If that works for some people, fine.

SMH Aretha is a hot mess. She needs to focus on finding a new stylist rather than thinking about Beyaki Knowles…..I mean really was it that serious???

As for Ms. Cole. While I do understand her point that encouraging drug use is not appropriate, the Grammys are to honor musical talent. Amy is a very talented individual and while I agree that she needs help, her album was fresh and different in TODAY’s era of music. She won based on that alone. This album was getting praised before it came out that she was actually on drugs— the fact is that it became POPULAR afterwards. I heard the CD before I really understood the gravity of her addition and probably would have shied away if all this had come out– but I am glad that I didn’t. I too love Ledsi and I agree that awards should abound, but that does not take away from Amy. This is after all a mainstream institution (music academy) and they give us our categories— ones that Amy did NOT win in. We know that we have to have our own to get it appreciated. It ain’t right, it is!! So why blame the artist for living her life and making the kind of music that feels right to her. And @84 Natalie was getting awards and accolades as she was delving deeper and deeper into drugs.

Natalie cole must have forgotten that she was young once and on drugs and no one ever gave up on her. Maybe this will help winehouse still performing and being acknowledged for her talent just maybe this will be her high…..

Oh and it is common for Best New Artist to have released music before they are entered into this category. Amy did release Frank before Back in Black, but that was not a U.S. release yet. Back in Black was the first CD that was put out stateside. The Grammys are an American award.

It’s bad to try to replicate something when you’re not that bright. Other artists summoned particular styles and characteristics of certain musical periods…NEVER SPECIFIC ARTISTS. To “name names” (remember that Seinfeld episode? lol) means saying “all these people were good but could never be what you are”….And, I can’t get how Beyonce didn’t know that…smh
