IT’s easy to see it is all about the money. They could have easily casted faith evans for this part…Her voice is much closer to Etta’s style and she looks more like her, but it is about how many tickets you sell and Beyonce name is more out there than Faith is. So sad

You know whats funny, I think keyshia cole would have been better for this role for some reason too. I dont even know if she can act but from what Etta said and how they look similar to each other I think it could have worked.

I thought I was the only person who felt that way…she has the look, she has a closer correlation in voice to Etta and she can be hard. She may have to take acting lessons, but Bee can’t act either so they are on the same boat. Whoever did the casting did it purely because of Bee’s popularity. Etta was the first lady of Chess back in Chi-Town. They was known for the harder sounding R&B. At the time, Detroit/Motown was kicking their ass, so they tried to mimic Motown success by forcing Etta to sing crossover/R&B/Pop. She recorded a couple of duet songs that sounded like Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell, which only pissed her off some more!

As much as I’d like to give Etta some credit, I gotta say that Beyonce is reason why there are so many comments.

I’ll wait for this one on DVD. I’ve heard on another gossip site that the lady with real talent will be in the movie also(Ms. Alicia Keys). If Alicia is in it then I will go and see the movie. I didn’t know that Beyonce was still on the market for ’singing” roles after how Jennifer Hudson took all the attention. Beyonce will be horrible, trust me I know this.

Yes agree with you both. She will most likely NOT pull this off. Blues and street is in your heart. Etta James is singing as she lived past experiences. Please you tube her songs in live performances. Her soul sings. I automatically fell in love with her spirit. Unlike Beyonce, she does not connect with her audience. It’sIt’s a cryin shame that Christina Aguilera didn’t get offered the Etta role. Her version of “At Last” is absolutely glorious. I’m sure it is far superior to anything Beyonce and her team can conjure up. Bey has a lovely voice, but I don’t think she has the grit or raspiness to pull off an Etta tune. She may be able to sing it in her own pretty way, but it’s not going to have the same impact because she doesn’t have that kind of soul or emotional intensity in her voice. Perhaps she can develop those characteristics she currently lacks.

I won’t underestimate Bey, she’s accomplished too much musically for anyone to look down their nose at her. Besides, judging from the above photos, there are some definite facial similarities. If she can really nail the acting, I can easily forgive her for not sounding like Etta. I wish her luck, but Christina who can sang, not sing, circles around Bey on a bad day, was utterly robbed. I am a Beyonce fan, but some of her fans make us all look dumb. It is not about hating on Beyonce for everyone. Sometimes critics can raise some of the most valid points because they are not biased. First of all, I agree with the comment that said, “Give it to an unknonw.” You want to know why there are only two black stars in Hollywood, it is because we do not promote new talent. Instead, blacks with perceived power would prefer to keep using the same women (Halle, Beyonce) in everything instead of giving those nameless women of color a shot. Since we are always talking about what white folks do, that is what they do. They give an unknown a chance to be successful, and that is why they continue to dominate Hollywood despite the fact they themselves are becoming a minority in this country. Beyonce is a star, this is not even an arguable point. Promote a talented young woman who would not normally have a chance. I don’t mean one we have already been exposed to (J-Hud).

Next, yes Diana Ross did play Billie Holiday. Did anyone mention how she herself had a bout with drugs? Billie and Etta are heavy roles because those are women who sang from the soul and that’s why their music will outlast all these “it” girls out here. When they sang, they brought their problems (drugs, men who beat them, segregation, racism etc.). All these new age singers whine about is, “Why people hate me? People say evil things about me. No one loves me.” Those women dealt with hate 101, 102, and 103, and survived when everyone said no. They came around the time when white folk showed their true racism and not this under the table hidden racism or because you’re rich I’ll pretend like I like you.

Just because someone says Beyonce is a bad actor doesn’t mean people are hating on her. No one is perfect at everything; she or the people in her camp need to realize it. She either need to step her game up or just stick to what she does best, which is singing.

The reason people are voicing their opinion on her acting ability (and not hating) is because there are several people out there that are far more talented at acting and will never get the chance. They wont get the chance because people like her deebo their way in the game. It so sad that we cant have new age Angela Bassett, Alfre Woodard, Halle Berry, Loretta Devine, or a Ruby Dee.
