RUNWAY REVIEW: RACHEL ROY F/W08

reviewroy.jpg

With Mercedes-Benz fashion week kicking off this week, I thought I would conduct a few reviews on select designers as they take place. One of the runway shows starting off the event was that of Rachel Roy’s (some of you may know her as Mrs. Damon Dash)…

Rachel Roy, who has been featured in fashion week since F/W 2007, has since then become well respected and demanded. Being that as it may, Roy brought a different feel to her 2008 winter collection, saying to be inspired by her interest in “the intersection between Native American and Colonial styles, but brought up-to-date for the women of today”.

Upon looking at this collection, one can definitely get a sense of southwestern colonial for the modern career woman. Full cohesive it may not be, but it seems as if Roy wanted it to be that way – with her mixture of styles such as a tuxedo pantsuit and western styled hat…

I agree with the idea of comparing, you really can’t compare Rachel Roy with Valentino, who’s a veteran, for Rachel to be designing (even if she’s not actually sketching, doing the flats, doing the mood boards, actually making the prototypes) at this level and she hasn’t been in the industry that long, and probably didn’t go to design school or have an internship as an assistant designer, etc I still think the clothes are very well put together, especially the accessories. I wonder if Rachel designs based on the predicted trends which most designers do, they have trend forecasts that are 3 years in advanced that might say something like for Spring the trend with be ethnic inspiration, and etc. I wonder……

I don’t like any of it. It looks too frumpy. I’d rather go naked. Sorry Rachel.

  3. irrational rationalist

    hmmmm i thinking…no

  4. Classy

Looks like her style was inspired by Rihanna. Her models look likeher anyway. People are using Rih’s hair in runway shows…now that’s a trendsetter.

  5. yes

but uh this doesnt have anything to do with rihanna

  6. Noelle Alexandrea Teague

Just because we don’t like Rachel’s line doesn’t mean we’ve jumped off the deep end and are wearing nothing..or as you put it

“Most of Black America only understands how to to look downright naked and ghetto-street.”

I don’t know who you hang around, but I don’t dress like this, and I don’t like her line. It’s not for me. Its forgettable, and at times, a bit tacky, but if you price things just right, people stop asking themselves if it really looks nice, and swear it MUST be the !sh because it’s so expensive.

EVERYTHING Armani puts out is NOT FLY. Every Jimmy Choo is not for everybody, sweetie.

As far as the Rihanna hairstyle, I could of sworn Kelis was rocking the short black edgy look first. I mean they both look fly I’m just saying.

@60 i also said “to many other collections that were shown”. maybe i shouldn’t have singled out valentino but the pt. is that she is not the only newcomer to come along and her collection is still weaker than many other newcomers. and i’m not comparing the clothes themselves. i’m comparing the strength of the collections. it was all good but that’s it. GOOD. nothing seemed to stand out. she could’ve taken it farther. i’ll cut her slack seeing that she’s fairly new but again there are other newcomers that had amazing collections and did something different

  13. a.k.a. new yorker

@LI yes kelis rocked it first before rihanna but i think fefe dobson rocked it before both. not sure but i do think riri got the idea from fefe not kelis b/c they’re labelmates and she said a yr. or two ago that she admired fefe’s style

Chic– Fashion is not reinventing the wheel. It is breathing life into concepts that and making them reflect one’s personal sense of style. There are about seven looks/pieces in the collection that I love and a few I would just style differently, but overall as a twenty-five year old working in corporate america I can say her classic taste and quirky delivery is a breath of fresh air to the “tie the belt around it and call it classy” that our people have latched onto. We were not even feeling that until it became mainstream. Nor did the majority of the black female population want to wear pointy vibrant pumps, faux hawks, red lips, spiky hair cuts, or leggings (again) until we started seeing ALOT of stars rocking them. We weren’t feeling anything that was not matchy matchy until a few years ago (thank you SATC) and we weren’t layering. I understand some of the points made here. If you like it you like it, if you don’t you don’t. I am not trying to get you to. But I am seriously discouraged sometimes when I see that our people get pigeonheld in a way of presenting themselves. We as a people have our own unique style, but please understand that everything has a starting point and an inspriation. Baggy pants-prison clothes, high tops -work boots (not Tims— which are really outdoor hiking boots), puffy jackets– ski clothing. I promise some of the same people who diss what people are wearing on this page or fashion lines that they are not feeling, will be rocking the watered-down, Steve Madden, H&M, New York & Company, Forever 21, or Rainbow version in the next 1.5 years. OPEN your MINDS. That being said DO YOU.

  17. Gem

Ohhh it’s too bad so many of you aren’t feeling it…I love it…precision detailing, the rich yet sophisticated palette (take notes, Kimora)…the booties remind me of Dries Van Noten’s granny wedges from a few seasons ago though (Kanye’s girl did similar ones, too).

  18. Justin

    Tamdiggy broke that DOWN lol.
go head, I couldn’t have said it better lol.

  19. Have Not Thought of a New User Name

Her clothes are ugly to me, but I wish her well at least she trying to make her own money and live off Dame Dash.

  24. 99 problems

Again CL now I know that ur used to seeing delusional people on ur site its a given the internet attracts the weirdos but come on yall know that this woman is the same woman on Dr Phil that had the obsession with Jay-Z just look at her posts being a loser is one thing but come on this chicks off her rocker !!!
Look im just tellin u for liability reasons keep an eye on this Noelle person ! somethin just aint right about that one-you’ve been warned!

  25. Classy

Rihanna’s hair is not much like Kelis’, and Fefe doesn’t even count. She was never even on anyone’s radar. People have had short hair before, but Rih has made her particular cut huge. Everybody didn’t cut their hair when Kelis’ was short, but people have been emulating Rih like crazy.

  26. 99 problems

Scrolling up to see were Rihanna was ever mentioned in this post SEARCH INITIATED:
searching …searching…..results=negative no Rhi Rhi referance. Stan please exit and locate correct post!

  27. Classy

@99 Problems I can bring up whomever I damn well please. If it disinterests you…you exit.

  28. 99 problems

ur right you can Im just confused as to why and how you managed to do so on a post that obviously has nothing to do with her at all not even remotely related, shit dont get upset just do better next time ok peaches!

  29. Classy

@99 Problems, in my original post I generally said the models look like her/ have her hairstyle. That’s how she came up. What’s so confusing?

  30. This line did NOT surprise me ’cause she dresses just like this! *blank stare*

  31. Everybody’s a fashion guru on this topic eh? I like it, I don’t LOVE it. Just my little old opinion, you know us black americans…

  32. Contentandhappy

Avant-Garde isn’t just a cool expression that you say when you see something you like
