STEPHEN “STATIC/MAJOR” GARRETT - (1976-2008)

Tuesday, February 26, 2008

static.jpg

Music writer/artist/producer Stephen “Static/Major” Garrett died unexpectedly on Monday in his hometown of Louisville, Ky. I have yet to find any official reports about his death, but I have received numerous emails, not to mention, many people are leaving their condolences on his myspace page. This is a major loss for the music industry.

Many of you may not know Static by face, but you definitely know his music. He was signed to the Blackground record label where he found his first breakthrough working with R&B singer Ginuwine. The single “Pony” became a major hit and a milestone in the careers of both Static and Timbaland. He then went on to produce Aaliyah’s “Are You That Somebody?” featured on the Dr. Dolittle soundtrack. Not to mention he produced many tracks for Aaliyah’s self-titled final album. Many of you may also remember him as part of the R&B trio, Playa, who were signed to the Def Jam record label at one point during their career. In recent months he was working on his new album, SUPPERTIME, which was slated to drop this year.

He also worked with artists: Tank, Destiny’s Child, Brandy, JoJo, Jay-Z, and Diddy, just to name a few. Make sure to view the Playa video from “Cheers 2 U” after the cut. He also made a cameo in the “Are You That Somebody?” video as well.

We would like to give our condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time.

Wow…I didn’t know him as a producer. I always remembered him as the cute dark skinned guy in the group Playa. He resembled my boyfriend at the time so I always payed close attention to him. Even when I first saw this post it took me a couple seconds to realize he was dead because I was to busy looking at how familiar he looked. My condolences to his fam. Aneurysm? That’s crazy. I don’t think a check up at the doc can really help that. Things like that is just sporadic and happens. But like others have already stated, live ya life, tomorrow i definitely not guaranteed.

The album that Playa did was sooooo sick, and I could always tell when he was involved with a song because of the vocal harmonies each artist would use. I especially love the work he did on Aaliyah’s last album. RIP Static.

Static was in a car accident and had been hospitalized for a while, actually. He was one of the young black writers I REALLY checked for and crucial to the Bassment Crew (Missy, Timbo, Ginuwine, Aaliyah) taking over throughout 96-99.

Another soldier gone too soon.

Mr. Garrett…what can I say, a true talent in deed. I come from the generation of those who have grown with Aaliyah along with Tim Mosely, Miss E., Playa, Mr. Lumpkin, etc…..their music has been an inspiration and helped me get through the good times as well as the bad in my days…..being an avid music lover, this was a hard hit for me. I will always cherish Static’s talent we were fortunate to have, and will keep the family and friends in my prayers……. may you now rest in peace. You will be missed.

I just want to say RIP to one the most prolific songwriting/vocal arranging talents of my generation. I am a singer/songwriter myself from Lexington, KY and I knew him personally. He was truly an inspiration for my brother and me, Black Coffey, during our growing years as singers/songwirters/vocal producers. He will be be sadly missed and it’s a shame he had to leave of us so soon. Yo Static…although I never got to work with you thanks for paving the way for Black Coffey and all the artist trying to make it out of KY! Tell Aaliyah we miss her!!

r.i.p static major
i only got into static and playa 2 years ago and ever since then i always thought that static was a talented man. even though i’ve never met him personally from what people say he seemed like a cool down to earth person and one of my aspirations was to meet him one day. when i heard the news that he died i couldn’t believed it and it took a minute to sink in.next thing i know i’m crying because he inspired me in so many ways as a songwriter, its just a shame he never got the shine he deserved.

may all of u remember that life is too short to be taken for granted and go for your dreams.

nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! This man was the hottest fucking producer of this decade thus far. I fell in love with Static’s music after Aaliyah’s last album dropped in 2001. This man damn near produced that entire album!!! Every track is fiyah. He wrote lyrics, did the compositions–Timbaland totally stepped back to let Static do his job. Timbaland was barely involved in Aaliyah’s last album. And Aaliyah put all her trust into this man’s talent, without Timbo. Static–and Pharrell—are the reason I developed an interest in making beats. Static, to me, was my number one favorite R&B producer in the new millenium.( Pharrell is number 2)

I am working my own music production company in Baltimore..and I dreamed of linking with Static one day. I wanted to sit with him in the studio. I guess that day will never come.

Jesus take the wheel,

Another loss to the “Super Friends” crew (Timbaland, Missy, Aaliyah RIP, Ginuwine, Playa, Magoo, Nicole Ray). They held it down ‘95-’97, and the music that came from this group as a result of their network drives the creativity of many artists today.

My condolences to Static’s family.

didn’t read the rest of the posts but see below about anurysms. a friend passed from one. truly unexpected.

“An aneurysm (or aneurism) is a localized, blood-filled dilation (balloon-like bulge) of a blood vessel caused by disease or weakening of the vessel wall. Aneurysms most commonly occur in arteries at the base of the brain (the circle of Willis) and in the aorta (the main artery coming out of the heart), a so-called aortic aneurysm. The bulge in a blood vessel can burst and lead to death at any time. The larger an aneurysm becomes, the more likely it is to burst.”
