I agree with #24. I found it very painful, even after all these years, to watch Aaliyah’s video. It just seems impossible that such a vibrant, lovely soul is no longer with us.

Regarding this most recent tragedy, my thoughts and prayers go out to all affected by this young man’s passing.

Both Static and Aaliyah were way ahead of their time. The material he contributed to Aaliyah’s final album still trumps the majority of R&B music out today, and 7 years later, it still sounds timeless. Static, thank you for blessing us with your great contribution to music. RIP.

Is it offensive to tell the descendant’s relatives the following:? “I will miss him he was so cool and so fine.” I asked because my friend’s brother died 3 years ago from a seizure, and i told his family that a few months after his death, and they all looked at me like WTF?…i was just wondering what i said wrong, and my mother said it’s inappropriate to talk about a person’s looks after death, and that it’s just not something people want to hear, but i didn’t know that was off limits.

I was going to say the same thing about Static, but this experience stopped me, so i’ll just say RIP and he’ll be missed.

Wow…I didn’t know him as a producer. I always remembered him as the cute dark skinned guy in the group Playa. He resembled my boyfriend at the time so I always payed close attention to him. Even when I first saw this post it took me a couple seconds to realize he was dead because I was to busy looking at how familiar he looked. My condolences to his fam. Aneurysm? That’s crazy. I don’t think a check up at the doc can really help that. Things like that is just sporadic and happens. But like others have already stated, live ya life, tomorrow i definitely not guaranteed.

Damn! That’s such a big loss. I have been hoping to see another Playa album. They had that southern soul flava. My prayers are with his family and friends. Cheers 2 you!

nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! This man was the hottest fucking producer of this decade thus far. I fell in love with Static’s music after Aaliyah’s last album dropped in 2001. This man damn near produced that entire album!!! Every track is fiyah. He wrote lyrics, did the compositions–Timbaland totally stepped back to let Static do his job. Timbaland was barely involved in Aaliyah’s last album. And Aaliyah put all her trust into this man’s talent, without Timbo. Static–and Pharrell—are the reason I developed an interest in making beats. Static, to me, was my number one favorite R&B producer in the new millenium.( Pharrell is number 2)

I am working my own music production company in Baltimore..and I dreamed of linking with Static one day. I wanted to sit with him in the studio. I guess that day will never come.

I’m still in shock! I’ve been a fan of static since about 97/98. I was a really big fan! His voice is unmistakable and i’m not just saying because of his passing. On tracks like “Are You that Somebody” you can clearly hear his arrangement and voice and it was wonderful. It was like that on every song he arranged and sang on. I feel like the industry lost a huge talent. He was one of those talents that only music insiders and people who loved music knew about. I never got to work with him or meet him and that really sadens me because he was one of those guys that you had to meet and work with! So Rest In Peace Static! Take care of Aaliyah!

I was sadden knowing this talented young man is no longer with us. I asked my son who is that young man,my son said Static Major, and I said I like his voice. My boyfriend asked me if I had seen Lil’ Wayne new video yet, and I said “no”, but I loved the song. He went on to say that at the end of the video it said R.I.P to the producer, who name he could not recall, but stated that he looked young and who was probably about to “blow up” because of the popularity of the song. So finally I walk into the house the other day and Lil’ Wayne video is about to come on and I see, Steve/ Static, on the TV, I screamed to my boyfriend ” that is one of members of Playa, who CD, Cheers2U, I have purchased 4 times at least. I also informed my boyfriend that he was not about to “blow up”, Static has been in the music industry, I always tied him to be a big part of the Timberland/Missy camp, for over 10 years. Playa CD, Cheers2U is one that you can listen to from beginning to end, and it came out in 1998 when I was a freshman in college. Every time I lost it or scratched it I brought another, and I am very picky when it comes to music, so…. For anyone that does not have Playa CD please go and get a copy, you will definitely be pleased and see a small dose of the great music talent has been lost. My deepest condolences go out to his family, friends and fans, he will truly be missed.

I am deeply saddened by the news of Static’s death. I know I am late but I didn’t hear anything about it until I saw the end of the “Lollipop” video tonight. Static was a true talent. The work he did on Aaliyah’s (Babygirl you are truly missed!) last CD was the sh*t! You can listen to it right now and still bump to it like it was released yesterday. All his hits are timeless songs with crazy beats that when you listen to them they still make you wanna sing and dance. Static, your musical talent will truly be missed. I saw this brother’s video with lil Wayne and at the end I read the words ( In loving memory of Stephen “Static” Major Garrett), and that made me very sad inside- may the All Mighty Allah (SWT) have mercy on your soul and grant you His eternal peace

This comes straight from a close relative of his…

Tragically, he died on February 25, 2008 in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky. The cause of death was due to complications from a botched medical procedure performed at Baptist East Hospital in Louisville. It was originally suspected to be due to a brain aneurism, but it was just a rumor which was confirmed by one of his relatives and announced by his former Playaband mate Smoke Digglera on Myspace:

“There have been many different speculations about the death of my brother, Stephen Ellis “Static/Major” Garrett. I write this blog entry to set the record straight. I, also, ask that you direct all to this blog for the truth. I spoke to my sister-in-law, Static’s wife, yesterday at the funeral, and she, again, permits me to do this. She, also, wants all to know “the truth in the booth.” On the day of February 25th, Static was in Atlanta, and began to feel sick. His desire was to go home (Louisville, Kentucky) to be around family and seek medical attention. He had a virus. I, still, don’t know what the name of this virus was, but it was not a life-threatening issue, I do know. This particular virus affects the muscles, throat (quivering of the voice), as well as, causes drooping of the eye. He had no history of illnesses or anything of that nature. Anyone that knows Static, knows that he didn’t like hospitals. He suffered the death of his sister in the late 80’s, when we first met, and had a conscious or phobia about hospitals. I’m sure he’s not the only one. I, now, have that conscious. But, he knew he needed medical attention to become well.

When he admitted himself to Baptist Hospital East in Louisville, Kentucky, the doctors presented him with medicine that would treat the virus. The treatment was taking the medicine through a shunt, in the neck, which treats more severe cases of this virus. Quicker than taking pills for days. Though, he didn’t want the shunt, the doctors insisted that he treat it this way. The treatment was a form of dialysis to filter the blood of the virus.

He called his mom and told her, “Mama, something doesn’t feel right. It hurts.” When the doctor’s were made aware that the shunt was hurting him, they took it out……it was over! When taking the shunt out, they took it out in the wrong manner that resulted in damaging the artery. He bled to death! They killed my brother, his wife’s husband, his kids’ father, his mom’s son, and the world’s musical inspiration.

His death was ruled “accidental”. He didn’t have to die! But, I will say this. In situations like these, I feel that it was time to go home. And, it’s not our decision on whether or not to stay. There is one thing that’s guaranteed in this life, and that is, we all have to die, in some point and time, and in some way or another.

The moral of this story is do not put off for tomorrow what u could do today! Yesterday is gone and tomorrow is not promised! Do whatever it is that you have to do and whatever it is that you want to do TODAY! I will be writing more on Static/Major, due to the fact that I, regardless, am highly upset and disappointed in Baptist Hospital East and their procedures on Monday, February 25, 2008.”
