WHO SANG IT BETTER: JAZMINE SULLIVAN vs. AMY WINEHOUSE

♫ Jazmine Sullivan – ‘Round Midnight

J Records signee Jazmine Sullivan and Grammy award winning Amy Winehouse are both amazing vocalists. Both ladies recorded the Thelonious Monk jazz classic, “‘Round Midnight” in recent years and put their own twist to it. It was interesting because it wasn’t until I listened to the words that I realized that it was even the same song. I just familiarized myself with the Amy Winehouse version, but I am quite familiar with Jazmine Sullivan’s version, considering that it was one of the first few records I’ve heard from her.

♫ Amy Winehouse – ‘Round Midnight

“‘Round Midnight” has been recorded in greater frequency than any other jazz standard composed by a jazz musician, so you’ve probably heard some more of your favorite artists sing it before. I can’t make a decision, but in my opinion, both versions are great in their own way. But what do you think? Who sang it better? The troubled artist or the young newcomer? Jazmine Sullivan has it for me, hands down. Her vocals are amazing!

  2. Rhapsody

    But Amy Winehouse is an amazing vocalist as well. But this particular arrangement, I loved Jazmine Sullivan through the entire piece. Amy Winehouse didn’t start getting me into it until toward the middle and end of her song.

  3. blackisbeautiful

    I love Jazzy’s and I love Amy but jazzy’s all the way for me

  4. boi wonder

    first comment! both of them were ok but amy’s sounds better

  5. They both did it in their own way. They both have distinct sounding voices that do their songs justice… Jazmine’s has a soul/church/Jazz vibe, and Winehouse gives it a jazz vibe as well, with a slightly new age sound.So I say it’s a tie! I like both of them!

  6. Ms.Mdot

    Uhh, Jasmine has way too many runs for me…she has a beautiful unique voice, but I would’ve loved it if she were to just sing the song without some of that extra stuff.

  7. pat

    I LIKE BOTH…BUT JAZMINE GETS IT FOR ME
    SHE HAS A NATURALLY JAZZY AND RIFFY VOICE….ITS NOT THAT SHE’S TRYING TO BE SHOWY…….ITS JUS NATURAL FOR HER TO SING THAT WAY CONSIDERING ALL HER MUSICAL INFLUENCES TOO I THINK…..I LOVE HER “EAR”!!!!!!!!!!

  8. both are good but i like amy’s

  9. HB

    Thanks Brian and Angel for shouting me me out in the post (Mason). Ive had Amy’s version since 04′ and one of my favorite tracks recorded by her vocally, so im more used to that version, i like Jazmine’s too but still feeling Amy’s a little more……Thanks again lets see what everyone else thinks lol.

  10. killervirgo

    I like Amy’s. Is it just me, or does Jazmine Sullivan’s tone sounds a bit like John Legend’s?

  11. Jay

    Amy’s is the best in my opinion… but I love them both

  12. @11, nobody care you had that song since 04! LOL! People like sound like they got on long before someone else!

  13. soulcrew70

    ha, ha no ones feelin that crackhead Amy………Duffy the new chick on the block

  14. crys

    you should post the version by ledesi as well.

    but of course jazz’s is better : )

  15. SmEllyCaT

    I prefer Jazmine’s version mainly because I really cant stand Amy’s voice, once in a while its okay but listening to her whole album makes my ears bleeed.

    Jaz has that soulful jazz sound that is just incredible- she didnt need the extra runs though. I do appreciate Amys attempt at making the song more contemporary but its not to my liking.

  16. SmEllyCaT

    @14 Duffy is crap, get ur ears checked. Just because you like her doesnt mean everyone in the UK does.

  17. They are both alright.
    Jasmine’s has too many runs but her voice is nice
    Amy’s is okay it sounds like she is talking at some points…
    It’s a TIE

  18. soulcrew70

    @smellycat: stop hanging out with Amy and Pete and lay of the pipe

  19. rube

    AMY is better, I think. But she is really a mess. I saw her profile on millionaire dating site RichLoving. com last week. Just curious!

  20. G_Love

    Love Wino’s version.

  21. soulcrew70

    to all the Duffy haters FUCK U!!!!!!!!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlcRRnbqS8Y

    this tune kills it, none of that wack pop RnB mess…..real talent.

  22. Elegance1981

    Jasmine Sullivan has it hands down. When does her album come out anyway? It’s time for some real music.

  23. L&F Unknown. .

    Winehouse has more vibe I feel. Her vibe is astounding to me, and despite the issues they put out about her she has a lovely voice.

    I feel Amy way better than Jazmine even though she was a soulful voice also.

    I visualize with Amy’s vocal more than Jazmine.

  24. SICKNEY!!

    Jaz is the biz!!! I like Amy but she aint got shiznit on Jazz!

  25. VirgoDoll

    I don’t even have to listen to know that the winner is Jazmine

  26. Mo

    I love the tone in Jazmin’s voice, although she has too many runs and I like Amy’s production, if you were to put Jazmin’s voice with Amy’s music, that would have been HOT!

  27. ZEE

    Jaz’s version is better!! I really love her voice!

  28. Noire

    @17 I was thinking the same thing too. Ledisi verison is really good also. But between Amy and Jazmine it will have to be Jazmine.

  29. Jen

    Jazmins vocals are on point. However Amy’s is more upbeat and kinda gives me a Sade feel. The instrumental does something for me that’s almost kinda early 90′s jazz

  30. Randomonium in Brooklyn

    I luv them both……Jazzy is giving me Melonie Daniels…I Luv It!! A.Wino’ is sanging though…she always does…

  31. KayT

    I love them both!

    I really appreciate the difference between the two and their musical capability to make it their own.

  32. D

    i don’t like the song. on amy it’s less boring. both are good on vocals and have their own thing going on.

    my vote…amy because of the arrangement and vocals

    Uhh, Jasmine has way too many runs for me…she has a beautiful unique voice, but I would’ve loved it if she were to just sing the song without some of that extra stuff.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Same here. I still like Amy’s version better, because she has more of a jazz edge, but that’s not to say that Jasmine isn’t good herself. I hate it when artists always try to go over the top. The runs were too soulful for jazz piece.
  34. Aries
    I like Amy’s voice better but I like the slow tempo of the song on Jazmine’s version. Had Amy been singing a slower version of the song I would have absolutely loved it lol.
  35. Jay Jay
    I think that Amy’s version was better. I do like Jazmines voice but I do think that she had too many runs. I like Amy’s production also.
  36. Barbie
    @ #8: I agree with you..Jasmine just seemed like she was doing TOO much..Amy wins IMO
  37. Nee-Nee
    Amy, hands down!!!!!!!!
  38. NCD12
    Cop that Janet Jackson…”Discipline”
  39. TRILLA
    they both own that track.
    AMY SOUNDS SOOO AMAZING!
    WOW!
    I HAD BOTH VERSIONS FOR LIKE 2 YEARS NOW.
    LOVE BOTH OF THEM DEARLY.
  40. NathanDevonte
    Amy is amazing straight up!!
    But Jasmine’s vocals throw down, thick, husky and powerful.. i love it.
    But Amy’s got the commercial selling point vote!!!!
  41. Chryssi Naquole
    Sorry, Sorry Sorry..
    all the times that I have come to this site, never had I needed to comment on anything. I could really care less. But LEDISI sang “round midnight” the best..
    This rising BLACK star is in full swing.. she blows AMY CRACKhouse out the box, and sends her back to where the hell she came.
    Find her on imeem.com, type in “ledisi, round midnight”. Its an upbeat, jazz, soulful song. Her vocals are outSTANDING!!
    http://mocoproductions.im...uv/ledisi_round_midnight/
  42. full time bum
    i like both, but if i have to choose i like amy’s take. i have her first cd anyway. if y’all haven’t listened to “frank” y’all don’t know what you’re missing!!!
  43. Angelita
    Although I love Amy Whinehouse for the train wreck that she is Jazzy ripped it hands down. Her voice is amazing!!!
  44. Ms. Maye
    The new artist, Jazmine Sullivan, has it cause it has soul…it makes you want to take that song and sing it to your best ability, showing emotion/feeling! It makes you think more and with me being an “acoustic soul” type of person…it hits right up that alley! Luv it!
  45. FreshFromTheStreetz.blogspot.com
    AMY WINEHOUSE! That bytch Jazmine Sullivan’s voice is too fuckin low she sounds like a damn man and she gets me dehydrated with all those damn runs she does. Just SING THE DAMN SONG! The only person that can do runs all day and still murder the song is Karen Clark Sheard. Give it up Jazmine, stick to writing songs for the artist. Beyonce’s version of “Resentment” was much better than hers. And now Amy Winehouse’s “Round Midnight” is much better. UGH throw that man sounding broad to the WOLVES!
  46. anony
    i’m used to Amy’s version and I like Jasmine’s but Amy’s is more my vibe. I love how she makes it her own and everything she does(drugs excluded) is phenomenal. Amy’s first album and all her rare songs are fantastic, she truly has soul. Jasmine, i’m sorry sounds too much like a dude.
  47. vexxed
    Jazzy! did it!!!!
    I can’t get into Amy Winehouse (and it’s not just her personal story). I don’t buy her as a legit vocalist.
  48. Phillyjawn
    Jazmine got that hands down. She killed it with the scatting.
  49. I gotta go with Jazmine because AMy doesn’t impress me that much. I still don’t get the big deal about her.
    Because Amy is white with a Black sound and coke-head she is gonna be publicized more. It’s a shame.
  50. Toi
    Both versions are cool, but Amy’s version is my personal favorite because I can groove to it.
  51. a.k.a. new yorker
    amy b/c jaz has too many runs. i’m sick of ppl thinking that doing runs equals singing or soul b/c it doesn’t. you don’t need to do run after run to have soul. i mean seriously jaz does hundreds more runs than aretha and rere’s the queen of soul. i do love jaz’s voice but amy has this.
  52. missteejay
    amy’s version hurt my ears…jazmine wins for me…
  53. Aries
    @#47 Full time Bum. I have been listening to Frank for like 2 or 3 weeks on the internet to get a feel of it before i bought it. Cuz Back 2 Black is on main rotation in my cd player. Anyhow I went out last night and bought Frank and Back 2 Black (cuz i had a burned copy and it was getting scratched so i was like I might as well just buy both) lol Long story short. I totally agree with you about Frank. Its a great album. I love Take the Box , Love is blind and Stronger than me
  54. Sistrin T
    Feeling them both but if I had to choose like the sound behind Amy winehouse version
