♫ Jazmine Sullivan – ‘Round Midnight
J Records signee Jazmine Sullivan and Grammy award winning Amy Winehouse are both amazing vocalists. Both ladies recorded the Thelonious Monk jazz classic, “‘Round Midnight” in recent years and put their own twist to it. It was interesting because it wasn’t until I listened to the words that I realized that it was even the same song. I just familiarized myself with the Amy Winehouse version, but I am quite familiar with Jazmine Sullivan’s version, considering that it was one of the first few records I’ve heard from her.
♫ Amy Winehouse – ‘Round Midnight
“‘Round Midnight” has been recorded in greater frequency than any other jazz standard composed by a jazz musician, so you’ve probably heard some more of your favorite artists sing it before. I can’t make a decision, but in my opinion, both versions are great in their own way. But what do you think? Who sang it better? The troubled artist or the young newcomer? [ THANX TO MASON FOR SENDING THIS IN ]

Amy kicked it out!!!!
Both are good, but Amy’s vocals are stronger and much better than Jazmine’s. She may love the pipe, but Amy still has that amazing voice. The girl’s talent cannot be deinied.
AMY WINEHOUSE! Jazmine Sullivan still needs practice.
I heard J Sullivan’s version like a month ago…and i LOVE her…BUT THE VERSION SUCKS….SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BAD., there are tooo many runs…too much other crap.. Amy Winehouse”s verison is clearly better…like…..it is horrible…
jasmine hitted da hoe!1
i ‘m a true jasmine fan but can’t nobody touch amy winehouse vocally
Both versions were hot to death. I can’t pick a clear winner because I could sit back and listen to them both at a Jazz club. The major difference is I would love to listen to Amy’s version on a nice hot Friday night at the club. However, Jazmine’s version would be better for me at a live Sunday night affiar with dinner and drinks. I guess it’s about the kind of mood you want to set. Great job ladies!!
Tough, cos I have Jazmine’s cd, and I am in love with this woman.
But unbiasedly, Amy’s version made me listen from start to finish.
She just does so much more with the song, i think.
well i like jazmine’s better alot better even tho its slow tempo its sound alot more better u can here her voice more clearly and the beautiful note that come out iof her moouth
I am a sucker for soulful voices, so although Amy does a great job Jasmine kills the vocals. You feel it from the first word she says. Sang Girl!!!
amy killed , amy hit the ball out tha park don’t get me wrong jasmine sanged it good
Both versions are great. But let’s be for real, if we base this on vocal skills….Jasmine’s got it! Her skills are truly amazing. No studio enhancements, no mic reverb….just pure voice. Add a little male background……Perfection! All voice no gimmicks. Go Jasmine Go!
amy no matter what OFIIAL THE BEST OF HE BEST VOCALIST!!!!!!! shee is NO COMPETIIttION!!1
I think I like Amy’s better BUT Jazmine know she KILLED that song Bust your Windows!
I think I like Amy’s better BUT Jazmine know she KILLED that song Bust your Windows!
AMY AMY AMY AMY AMY! It seems to have more spunk to it that the “let me show off my vocals” feel that Jazmine gives it. AMY seems like she’s telling the story and singin out her blues, Jazmine is just singing!
WTF IS THAT SHIT AMY WINE HOUSE SINGING ABOUT>???
ITS A EFFIN JAZZ SONG AND IT SOUNDS LIKE SOME JUNGLE MUSIC..
I WOULD NEVER LISTEN TO THAT CRAP AND THAT
BROAD CANT EVEN SING
and i agree with ruthie..
the original song was deep malancholy..
amy’s garbage up tempo beat is not right fo the song
it was not even a competition jazmine sullivan won that 1 yeah amy has a reall y unique voice but so does jazmine and she used her voice and it worked out for her in the end so my votegoes to jazmine sullivan and she will always have my vote
for anybody that said Jaz won that is straight crazy. Amy won that hands down. It was very reminisent of the late, great Billie Holiday. If Amy got her personal problems together and focused on music, that chick would run the game. Like somebody else said up here, you can come down south and hear your cousin Nee-Nee run a song like Jaz in your grandma’s church. Sorry boo, AMY AMY AMY
I think that Amy’s rendition grabs your attention because the tempo is so upbeat. However Jazmine’s has a classic jazz sound. Her voice is so mature and soultry.
I like Jaz, but I love Amy’s work. As far as Duffy is concerned…she is great, also, but I am still upset over her crappy Glastonbury performance. I have heard all three live and all three can sing great. But as for vocalist, Amy is my favorite
I get what I need from each version.
I think they both were good, &nd i’ve been a winehouse fan since day one. I like that amy put a twist on it. But even though jasmines took forever to end [i liked hers better) but i |ike them both [i wish many more succesful songs to both)
amy and jazzy both sound great, but i like amy’s better, just for the fact it has music behind it… jazzy’s was a little boring to me, but she still sounded amazing
I liked the whole production of the Winehouse version better. Not to worry Jazzy, because “bust the windows out your car” Howt to def!
you really can’t compare the two they are they sound like to totally different songs. I like them both though.
i have to say amy’s version of round midnight is way better…but i still love Jazmine.
They both have really good versions of the song. Both versions are great and evoke completely different emotions. I would listen to Amy’s more than Jazmine’s just because it’s more upbeat and bubbly and that generally the type of stuff I listen to. Now as for the artists as a whole, Jaz takes it hands down. I like some of Amy’s stuff and she has a good voice, but Jaz is just outstanding, her vocals and all. I think Jazmine has a long successful career ahead of her.
I thought Jazmine sang it better – which is the original question. Amy sounded great and the production was on point. In fact, I’d rather listen to Amy’s version because Jazmine’s version makes my heart ache. But that’s a testament to how well Jazmine sang the song.
BTW, I really don’t think it’s a race issue, who knows more about pain than a crackhead? At least we free, Amy’s a slave (to crack) in 2008. She’s definitely got soul. She’s no Jazmine Sullivan, but she’s got soul.
I came across this site by accident but as I continued to read I became interested in the comparisons between Amy & Jazmine’s version of the song, ‘Round Midnight. I listen to both music samples and was definitely leaning towards Amy Winehouse’s funkier version when I read comment # 45 who suggested that an artist named LEDISI was better and she included a link that allowed you to listen to Ledisi’s version of the same song, so now, even though she was not in the original comparison, which is a shame, because she blew both Amy Winehouse & Jazmine Sullivan’s versions of “Round Midnight” to bits!!! In my opinion, HER, version was BEST!!!! Thanks 4 the recommendation #45!
i love jasmine Sullivan but Amy winehouse’s version is way better and i love this version jasmine’s is too slow and amy’s is just jazzy spucky and fun
i think im goin with amy
i love jaz but i think amy winehouse really captures you from the begining
but i liked jazmines vocals better
so im actually kind of stuck lol
hands down Jazmine Sullivan has this song. her vocals are amazing,
The epitome of Jazz is runs and scants… so what are some of you people talking about when you say she has to many runs and riffs????? Are you guys serious ???? Jazz did her thang and she did it well. If I gonna say this is a true jazz piece it is Jazz. If i am gonna say this is a modern jazz like piece then I can say Amy. But as for as VOCALS JAZZ is the #1. Amy is great too. But to me the winner is JAZZ!!!!!! Over the top!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
I like both of the artist’s versions but Amy’s is too new school for me. Jazmine’s captures the essence and the soul of the song which makes it very classical. They both did an incredibly awesome job. But Jazmine has my vote.
&& I completely agree with comment # 271
AMY WAS BETTER, BUT JASMINE IS AMAZING.
Jazzy’s!!!!! This girl is awesome ! Amy is sooo overrated ! It’s like there’s no other good artist but her this days!
wow! until now i never really heard any of amy winehouse music, but this midnight song, wow!!! i’m such a fan now. she really needs to quit acting a fool, i just use to see amy action’s on tmz, i never thought she was bad as in good. i think she might be sick because of drugs wow!!! i feal so sorry for her. i thoght she was a joke, but she’s for real. jasmine need’s to look at what amy done to herself and learn, we all can learn something here. i could listen to amy’s version all day . its amy straight up on the real, that other womans song was ok but amy’s version is is the better of the 3
Amy’s
First I would like to say I love both young ladies, with that said, Amy voice is very hypnotic, plus her version has a savory jazz flare to it…. So I prefer Amy’s version.
I absolutely love Jazmine but Amy Winehouse has this one hands down. Sorry Jaz….
I feel both Jazmine and Amy hit the material right on the mark even though they presented two vastly different styles. Which is better depends on the mood of the moment. I appreciate both.
MORELIGHT
I like Jazmine version the most, because that’s the mood i am in now. Tomorrow i may like Amy’s version most. But tonight, tonight, i feel Jazmine. They’re both amazing.
Jazmine Sullivan does a very good rendition as does Ledisi. I cannot choose between materpieces!
Holy SHIIIIIITtttt!!!! i didnt know that jazmine recorded this! how do i get the mp3????
Jazimin Sullivan all the way!!! Amy’s was ok but not as good as Jazzy’s!
I love Jazmine.. but Amy put her foot in that .. Execution was better.. hell i had to look up the lyrics after Jazmine then listened to Amy… Amy’s producer rocked it better but its clearly made to be up to date vs a rendition it the fashion of that era vs Jazmine’s version.. And all that said they have or portrayed it in different styles or voices so its more about which sound resonates with me more and that’s Amy for me…
Jazz does jazz. ’nuff said.
