WHO SANG IT BETTER: JAZMINE SULLIVAN vs. AMY WINEHOUSE

Tuesday, February 26, 2008

♫ Jazmine Sullivan - ‘Round Midnight

J Records signee Jazmine Sullivan and Grammy award winning Amy Winehouse are both amazing vocalists. Both ladies recorded the Thelonious Monk jazz classic, “‘Round Midnight” in recent years and put their own twist to it. It was interesting because it wasn’t until I listened to the words that I realized that it was even the same song. I just familiarized myself with the Amy Winehouse version, but I am quite familiar with Jazmine Sullivan’s version, considering that it was one of the first few records I’ve heard from her.

♫ Amy Winehouse - ‘Round Midnight

“‘Round Midnight” has been recorded in greater frequency than any other jazz standard composed by a jazz musician, so you’ve probably heard some more of your favorite artists sing it before. I can’t make a decision, but in my opinion, both versions are great in their own way. But what do you think? Who sang it better? The troubled artist or the young newcomer? Amy has this song on lock..that girl is troubled, but her voice is bad. This is a jazz track. Amy puts the upbeat smooth flare into it! Jaz makes it sound like a church tune you sing at a funeral.

It’s a draw. Two different versions that sound as good as the production allows.

The only way you could really compare them is if they each interpreted both versions. Then you could judge fairly.

It’s Amy for me, I even listened to the song twice. She made it interesting, the other one is good but it’s too simple for me compared to Amy’s version.

Amy got this one. Her music is way more uplifting on this.

Jazmine got a pretty voice too. I’d love to hear more of her stuff.

Amy got this hands DOWN! I can go to church and hear a Jazmin whatever any day, in fact she sounds like she’s immitating Kim Burrell straight up! I don’t care how many runs you can do if you’re not being origional than you don’t matter.

I’ll have to give it to Amy Winehouse. Jazmine was bold in singing the song without all of the extra background music, but Amy just added that extra flare.

WELL SINCE CLEARLY THE QUESTION IS …WHO SANG IT BETTER, NOT WHO’S WAS PRODUCED WITH A MORE MODERN SOUND I MUST SAY JAZZ SANG IT BETTER BECAUSE THERE IS SO MUCH DEPTH TO HER VOICE….AMZ DEF SANG IT BUT HERS WASNT AS SOULFUL…THERES ALMOST A LONGING PAIN WITH JAZZS ….SO CLEARLY SHE WERQED THAT SONG! BUT HONESTLY I LIKE THE UPBEAT BETTER….

I GO FOR JAZZ THOUGH!

I like Amy’s version better, I think the beat is what is really making me like it more.

Side Note: I love that people know aboout Ledisi, I am from the Bay Area and that girl is really talented I want her to blow up so big outside this region. I hope those Grammy nods help her (even though I feel they used her as a category filler)

hmmm…i like both. to me its hard. i like the up tempo of amys but i like the jazzy and bluesy feel to jazmines. she was killin that scatting at the end, that was good, but amy has something about her voice…i d k

i cant wait to hear a new album from amy.

Amy hands down for me. The chick is just talented…whatever her color or ethnicity. I pray she won’t be another Billie Holiday. She is kKinda lke a soulful Fiona Apple to me…Jazmin did a goob job but all of the runs were kinda out of place for me.

Tuesday, February 26, 2008 /

@91

Amy is heavily influenced by Sarah Vaughn and Dinah Washington and her sound is manily like Dinah’s so is Amy being original? GTFO lol both Jazzy and Amy have influences from somewhere else. Jazzy got it from Kim Burrell and does a good job. I like both versions!

Jazmine is singing LIVE. Amy’s was done in the studio and still doesn’t compare. Even though I like Winehouse, she sings like she’s imitating someone and her voice does have the tendency to verge on the annoying.

Jazmine’s rich tone is authentic…the girl is just ordained!

109.

Tuesday, February 26, 2008 /

Ain’t one producer on this whole site, yet ya’ll act like ya’ll know about runs and lows…..how about simulated note precision? How about distorted time placement?
Amy takes this joint hands down…she has never “NEVER EVER EVER EVER” had vocal effects put on her voice…that makes a great singer. I’m tired of ppl supporting these fraudulent singers, Jazzy step ya game up.

Tuesday, February 26, 2008 /

jasmine rifts too much. her version didn’t do it for me. we all know she can sing. she doesn’t need to carry her notes that much. that makes me scream inside. i like her voice, but the only song i’ve LIKED of hers was “break my little heart”. i think a lot of you are being bias.. but that’s just my intake on everything. miss amy jade winehouse did it for me. like i predicted she would.

i would like to hear Amy and Jazzy do something if Jazzy stop doing all them damn vocal riffs lol I love her but she does do too much with her voice on this song. Amy was trying too hard to sing on this song. I love them both so much. “Frank” is Amy’s best album.

ON PRODUCTION, DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHO PRODUCED BOTH TRACKS, PARTICULLARLY WINEHOUSE’S VERSION…

TO ME IT DID NOT SOUND LIKE THE DAP KINGS BUT IT DID SOUND LIKE IT COULD’VE CAME FROM THOSE CATS THAT PRODUCE FOR SADE & MAXWELL…UMM CAN’T THINK OF THEM BUT AMY’S VERSION HAS THAT KINDA SOUND…

JAZMINE SULLIVAN ALL THE WAY. JAZMINE IS BLESSED BEYOND BELIEF! SHE HAS A WONDERFUL EAR AND A VOICE TO BE ADMIRED! JAZMINE SINGS WITH MEANING AND SOUL. HER VOICE IS BEAUTIFUL AND LIMITLESS WITH POSSIBILITY! JAZMINE HAS A GIFT AND SHE’S GOT TO USE IT!!! WITHOUT A DOUBT…HANDS DOWN….JAZMINE SULLIVAN.

@ 113

You mean Sweetback? I don’t know if they collaborated with Amy on her first album. The Dap Kings didn’t start to collaborate with Mark Ronson until he hooked up with Amy to recreate this vintage Pop/Contemporary Jazz sound. I dunno I’ll look it up ;)

I love both of these ladies voices - WOW. However, Amy gave me more funk even though this is a jazz piece. Jasmine voice is amazing too, but too many runs - I felt like I was running in a race that was never going to end.

They both have a very soulful voice. I absolutely love Amy!!(no matter what) but I also love Jazmine’s version. They both did a unique and justified version of the song, so I cant choose. I think it really depends on the listener’s mood which very they would listen. It’s one of those songs where you put both versions on your Ipod. Good start for Jaz,big props mami!!

The CONCRETE LOOP STAFF has committed the unforgivable sin. How can you even compare Amy Winehouse to the sheer and undisputed vocal talent of Ms. Jazmine Sullivan. Jazzy destroys Amy with just one of her amazing runs. If Amy wasn’t british and white she wouldn’t receive all this attention. Sorry.

Amys may appeal more to a younger more eclectic or hip hop crowd, but I agree with most that the classic vocal stylings are flawless and much more suited to my tastes

Tuesday, February 26, 2008 /

I do believe VOCALLY Jazmine has the better voice. Especially in this song. The rifiting everyone complains about to me only adds to how well the song suits Jazzy’s. I like Amy version’s too,(I don’t beleive that because she’s british & white that’s the only reason why people like her) it seems like people forgot that the question was “Who sung it better?” not “Who’s background music was more upbeat?”

Like the Amy Winehouse version better. Amy just has something about her that isn’t what you expect to hear, she puts that twist on it.

I like Jazmine Sullivan don’t get me wrong but it was typical of the jazz song, very throaty and kind of bluesy, good but nothing special.

Both voices are undeniable, absolutely gorgeous. Still, I prefer Amy’s. There’s just something about that voice that carries you away. It takes you back to Dinah and Sarah, whose voices told you EVERYthing in just one song.

I think that they both did the song justice. I think I like Amy’s better because of the production and the way it was presented, but they both have two different sounds. But I like Amy’s better because I like her sound better. But I can’t put one against the other at all.

For ONE this is unfair because Jazmine Sullivan’s is song LIVE… Amy’s isnt. There could have fixed this song up to sound nice. Im not tryna knock Amy’s hustle but im going with Jazz. Hands Down! If she can sing this good live, I wonder how she can sing on an album… Hopefully we’ll find that soon!

I like both artist, but Jazmine’s is a pure win. Yeah she runs alot, but she can and it worked. Aside from that, she recorded this at Giles Peterson’s show in London and was put on the spot. They asked her to do a jazz piece, and with no rehearsal, this is what she did. She even said her keyboardist fumbled around a little with it, as they hadn’t done the piece in a while.

Thus, it’s a masterpiece. To sing this song on the spot with no rehearsal and have it sound like that is amazing.
