WHO SANG IT BETTER: JAZMINE SULLIVAN vs. AMY WINEHOUSE
Tuesday, February 26, 2008

♫ Jazmine Sullivan - ‘Round Midnight
J Records signee Jazmine Sullivan and Grammy award winning Amy Winehouse are both amazing vocalists. Both ladies recorded the Thelonious Monk jazz classic, “‘Round Midnight” in recent years and put their own twist to it. It was interesting because it wasn’t until I listened to the words that I realized that it was even the same song. I just familiarized myself with the Amy Winehouse version, but I am quite familiar with Jazmine Sullivan’s version, considering that it was one of the first few records I’ve heard from her.
♫ Amy Winehouse - ‘Round Midnight
“‘Round Midnight” has been recorded in greater frequency than any other jazz standard composed by a jazz musician, so you’ve probably heard some more of your favorite artists sing it before. I can’t make a decision, but in my opinion, both versions are great in their own way. But what do you think? Who sang it better? The troubled artist or the young newcomer? [ THANX TO MASON FOR SENDING THIS IN ]

But Amy Winehouse is an amazing vocalist as well. But this particular arrangement, I loved Jazmine Sullivan through the entire piece. Amy Winehouse didn’t start getting me into it until toward the middle and end of her song.

They both did it in their own way. They both have distinct sounding voices that do their songs justice… Jazmine’s has a soul/church/Jazz vibe, and Winehouse gives it a jazz vibe as well, with a slightly new age sound. So I say it’s a tie! I like both of them!

SHE HAS A NATURALLY JAZZY AND RIFFY VOICE….ITS NOT THAT SHE’S TRYING TO BE SHOWY…….ITS JUS NATURAL FOR HER TO SING THAT WAY CONSIDERING ALL HER MUSICAL INFLUENCES TOO I THINK…..I LOVE HER “EAR”!!!!!!!!!!

I prefer Jazmine’s version mainly because I really cant stand Amy’s voice, once in a while its okay but listening to her whole album makes my ears bleeed.
Jaz has that soulful jazz sound that is just incredible- she didnt need the extra runs though. I do appreciate Amys attempt at making the song more contemporary but its not to my liking.

Same here. I still like Amy’s version better, because she has more of a jazz edge, but that’s not to say that Jasmine isn’t good herself. I hate it when artists always try to go over the top. The runs were too soulful for jazz piece.

The new artist, Jazmine Sullivan, has it cause it has soul…it makes you want to take that song and sing it to your best ability, showing emotion/feeling! It makes you think more and with me being an “acoustic soul” type of person…it hits right up that alley! Luv it!

AMY WINEHOUSE! That bytch Jazmine Sullivan’s voice is too fuckin low she sounds like a damn man and she gets me dehydrated with all those damn runs she does. Just SING THE DAMN SONG! The only person that can do runs all day and still murder the song is Karen Clark Sheard. Give it up Jazmine, stick to writing songs for the artist. Beyonce’s version of “Resentment” was much better than hers. And now Amy Winehouse’s “Round Midnight” is much better. UGH throw that man sounding broad to the WOLVES!

Jaz is cool but Amy got this one HANDS down! I wish people would lay off this “She just popular cuz she White” mess. I only knew she was White when I saw pics of her years ago on a website that was playing her music. NONE of my friends knew she was White–until I told them and they STILL didn’t believe me. Music is music if it sounds good it sounds good. If YOUR favorite artists aren’t getting their shine why don’t some of you LEGALLY purchase their music and show up to their shows–that’s a start.

They both have a very soulful voice. I absolutely love Amy!!(no matter what) but I also love Jazmine’s version. They both did a unique and justified version of the song, so I cant choose. I think it really depends on the listener’s mood which very they would listen. It’s one of those songs where you put both versions on your Ipod. Good start for Jaz,big props mami!!

The CONCRETE LOOP STAFF has committed the unforgivable sin. How can you even compare Amy Winehouse to the sheer and undisputed vocal talent of Ms. Jazmine Sullivan. Jazzy destroys Amy with just one of her amazing runs. If Amy wasn’t british and white she wouldn’t receive all this attention. Sorry.

I do believe VOCALLY Jazmine has the better voice. Especially in this song. The rifiting everyone complains about to me only adds to how well the song suits Jazzy’s. I like Amy version’s too,(I don’t beleive that because she’s british & white that’s the only reason why people like her) it seems like people forgot that the question was “Who sung it better?” not “Who’s background music was more upbeat?”

Like the Amy Winehouse version better. Amy just has something about her that isn’t what you expect to hear, she puts that twist on it.
I like Jazmine Sullivan don’t get me wrong but it was typical of the jazz song, very throaty and kind of bluesy, good but nothing special.

I like both artist, but Jazmine’s is a pure win. Yeah she runs alot, but she can and it worked. Aside from that, she recorded this at Giles Peterson’s show in London and was put on the spot. They asked her to do a jazz piece, and with no rehearsal, this is what she did. She even said her keyboardist fumbled around a little with it, as they hadn’t done the piece in a while.
Thus, it’s a masterpiece. To sing this song on the spot with no rehearsal and have it sound like that is amazing.

I’m absolutely baffled by these responses. Is this a black vs white issue? because i don’t understand the overpraising of Amy’s version. It was good, yes. But Vocally Jasmines was way better, elite standard.
Amy has a great voice, but look at how easy her vocal style can be emulated. Theres about 5 new white artists out in uk at the moment, all sounding like amy whinehouse, and doing a decent job at it. None of them could come close to jasmine’s vocal ability. She sang the song live, and on the spot.
Compare Her singing live, and then AMY singing live. Amy sounds terrible half the time.
I don’t know if Amy’s production are writing these stupid comments or what, because they all sound like theyre written by the same people.
Amy definetely is an individual, her overall style & appearance is unique. But this battle is about vocals, and Jasmine won. She does not have a typical church voice, thats such an insult. Thats the problem with society, if a black person sings great, it’s just expected from them as if it’s in their genes. If a white person is able to emulate a black person, they become the great white hope.
It’s a shame, I do think Amy’s unique, but she lost this one.

It would have to be a tie..because they are doing two different takes to the piece. As a lot of people have said Jaz has a great amount of runs on the song which takes away from it. Amy on the the other hand sounds more on the jazz, however, some parts are a little annoying. Jaz sings more on her version. I love both of these artist because they are finally bringing REAL MUSIC to the table. Enough of the tired pop sounds bring on MUSIC! Take it for what it is…

I don’t really care for either version and this is the reason why. Jazmine Sullivan is a beautiful singer but her voice is heavy. I’m not too fond of heavy voices. Not saying that she can’t sing. Just saying that she doesn’t have the type of voice I like to listen to. I think that if Amy Winehouse would have done her version of “Round Midnight” like Jazmine Sullivan than it would have came out beautifully. If she would of slowed it down, just having the piano and her voice…OH..It would of been great. But anyway, I don’t like either one. If I had to pick I guess I’d pick Jazmine just on the fact that I like her version.

Jazmine Sullivan is the best Amy is no competition for Ms. Sullivan.Amy sounds like a good imitator of soul but does not possess the authentic sound. Amy also takes this jazz to much out of it’s element. I think Amy sounds like crap she could learn a lesson of authentic soul vocal from Jazmine.

I must say, I jjst learned about this Jazmine chick and decided to listen to both version of the song (’Round Midnight) and I definitely have to say Amy did a better job with the song. She brought you into the song immediately, especially those people who are not traditional jazz listener. As for Jazmine, she may have the more traditional jazz sound - which tends to put me to sleep. This is no indication of her ability to sing because I do like her hit single “Need U Bad”, it is pretty good.
So, in summary, if your not the traditional jazz listener I would recommend Amy’s version of the song because she put a more uptown vibe/beat to the jazzy hit song.

WHEN COMPARING TWO SINGS, ONE MUST CONSIDER WHETHER EACH SINGER CAN DO WHAT THE OTHER DID. THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL THAT AMY WINEHOUSE WOULD EVER BE ABLE TO RIP “ROUND MIDNIGHT” LIKE JAZMINE SULLIVAN DID. ON THE OTHER HAND, JAZMINE SULLIVAN COULD EASY PERFORM AMY’S WEAK RENDITION. THE SKILL IT TAKES FOR JAZMINE TO BE ABLE TO MOVE THROUGH THE MUSICAL SCALE AS SHE DOES WHEN EXECUTING HER RUNS IS UNPRECEDENTED. Jazmine’s version is much better.
Her version has much soul and depth. One CANNOT get this unless you’ve been oppressed, depressed, regressed and then blessed. Please don’t mistake her vibrato for runs. If you listen closely(or have musical ear) to her song, she has more of a vibrato which is extremely difficult to control. She also has the gift to do this song in sooooo many variety of styles.I know someone who has her tone almost exactly and she says it’s automatic with the vibrato in her vocal cords. Amy on the otherhand is limited to the jazzy version. She adds no seasoning to her version. YES race has a lot to do with it. Caucasians haven’t been through enough to add a sizzle to certain songs. Even the most soulful non-African American singer DOESN’T have the sultry we add to a song. One can sing this song with her version and still bring some flava(which she DOESN’T HAVE). Ella sang this song with an up tempo beat and sounds fabulous.

I can not choose. These are two very talented women. I like the fact that the two took a different approach. Although Amy Winehouse did have me at my computer vibing so. I don’t know maybe Ms. Winehouse gets it.

You cant compare the two. in that case throw in some of the jazz greats like billy and dinah crall or Ella, the one who made this tune poplular in the first place. every singer has their own taste style and range of what they can do. im an avid fan of both of these artists. so please lets be a little bit more open minded and appreciate everybody’s 2 cent to the musick game. Thanks

Jazmin Sullivan’s version is better to me. Just because nobody can sing it the way she can. Alot of people can sing it the way Amy Winehouse can. Whoever said Jazmin Sullivan sounds like a man needs to get there ears checked. The girl can straight up sing. Don’t be mad because you can’t do what she does!!!

Wow! Jaz has an awesome voice, rich and naturally riffed. She can’t help that she does all those runs, it comes natural. And her skat was very orignal, Loved her version from the beggining until the end. I have never heard either version from Amy nor Jazmine, but I could only stand 20 seconds of Amy’s version. Don’t get me wrong! She has an amazing voice as well, it just didn’t reel me in as a listener like Jaz’s did. Keep up the Great Work Jazmine and hope to Hear more fom you in the future!

I think Amy and Jaszmine did a beautiful they are great on two different levels. If a person doesnt know about music they wont understand what scatting and would think that shes jus running on but its a true talent to be able to do it and sound good while doing it. Amy Winehouse is my gurl and she has a way of making anybody love her music!

OK… Jasmine Sullivan is better, why you might ask? Simply because her singing comes from her soul, while Amy Winehouse is a cut about the rest, she is still just making sounds, not sangin’. Compare the two in concert form, Amy bites it every time, thus she is a studio singer and not a jazzy/soulful sanger. Again Amy is wonderful, and i do own both albums, but i would much rather hear Ms. Sullivan sang all day, then listen to that song more than once by Ms. Winehouse. Ciao

There is no comparison when it comes to these two voices. Jazmine Sullivan completely MURDERED!!!!!!! this track. I agree that Amy Whinehouse has a great voice but just not for this track, Jazmine seems to be doing so much more with her vocals and she kept me intrigued and wanting to hear more.

Both have huge/powerful vocals. I am smitten with Mz Sullivan’s melodious runs and the flexibilty in her voice. However, I believe Ms Winehouse a little more this time around. I think her style matches the intentions for this song a little better. But it could go the other way. As you might be able to tell, I’m torn. So my answer to the question: who sang it better? Neither. There is no better, only different. Each artist owned this.

Both are good, but Jasmine’s version fits the more classical jazz sound, and amy’s seems more modern because it is upbeat, but I would listen to both. To me it depends on the person’s mood, if they are more upbeat and in the mood to dance or if they are more calm and in the mood to relax.

Both versions were hot to death. I can’t pick a clear winner because I could sit back and listen to them both at a Jazz club. The major difference is I would love to listen to Amy’s version on a nice hot Friday night at the club. However, Jazmine’s version would be better for me at a live Sunday night affiar with dinner and drinks. I guess it’s about the kind of mood you want to set. Great job ladies!!

for anybody that said Jaz won that is straight crazy. Amy won that hands down. It was very reminisent of the late, great Billie Holiday. If Amy got her personal problems together and focused on music, that chick would run the game. They both have really good versions of the song. Both versions are great and evoke completely different emotions. I would listen to Amy’s more than Jazmine’s just because it’s more upbeat and bubbly and that generally the type of stuff I listen to. Now as for the artists as a whole, Jaz takes it hands down. I like some of Amy’s stuff and she has a good voice, but Jaz is just outstanding, her vocals and all. I think Jazmine has a long successful career ahead of her.

I thought Jazmine sang it better - which is the original question. Amy sounded great and the production was on point. In fact, I’d rather listen to Amy’s version because Jazmine’s version makes my heart ache. But that’s a testament to how well Jazmine sang the song.
BTW, I really don’t think it’s a race issue, who knows more about pain than a crackhead? At least we free, Amy’s a slave (to crack) in 2008. She’s definitely got soul. She’s no Jazmine Sullivan, but she’s got soul.

I came across this site by accident but as I continued to read I became interested in the comparisons between Amy & Jazmine’s version of the song, ‘Round Midnight. I listen to both music samples and was definitely leaning towards Amy Winehouse’s funkier version when I read comment # 45 who suggested that an artist named LEDISI was better and she included a link that allowed you to listen to Ledisi’s version of the same song, so now, even though she was not in the original comparison, which is a shame, because she blew both Amy Winehouse & Jazmine Sullivan’s versions of “Round Midnight” to bits!!! In my opinion, HER, version was BEST!!!! Thanks 4 the recommendation #45!

The epitome of Jazz is runs and scants… so what are some of you people talking about when you say she has to many runs and riffs????? Are you guys serious ???? Jazz did her thang and she did it well. If I gonna say this is a true jazz piece it is Jazz. If i am gonna say this is a modern jazz like piece then I can say Amy. But as for as VOCALS JAZZ is the #1. Amy is great too. But to me the winner is JAZZ!!!!!! Over the top!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
