Jazmine Sullivan has it for me, hands down. Her vocals are amazing!

But Amy Winehouse is an amazing vocalist as well. But this particular arrangement, I loved Jazmine Sullivan through the entire piece. Amy Winehouse didn’t start getting me into it until toward the middle and end of her song.

I prefer Jazmine’s version mainly because I really cant stand Amy’s voice, once in a while its okay but listening to her whole album makes my ears bleeed.

Jaz has that soulful jazz sound that is just incredible- she didnt need the extra runs though. I do appreciate Amys attempt at making the song more contemporary but its not to my liking.

Same here. I still like Amy’s version better, because she has more of a jazz edge, but that’s not to say that Jasmine isn’t good herself. I hate it when artists always try to go over the top. The runs were too soulful for jazz piece.

I like Amy’s voice better but I like the slow tempo of the song on Jazmine’s version. Had Amy been singing a slower version of the song I would have absolutely loved it lol.

I love both of these ladies voices - WOW. However, Amy gave me more funk even though this is a jazz piece. Jasmine voice is amazing too, but too many runs - I felt like I was running in a race that was never going to end.

They both have a very soulful voice. I absolutely love Amy!!(no matter what) but I also love Jazmine’s version. They both did a unique and justified version of the song, so I cant choose. I think it really depends on the listener’s mood which very they would listen. It’s one of those songs where you put both versions on your Ipod. Good start for Jaz,big props mami!!

I like both artist, but Jazmine’s is a pure win. Yeah she runs alot, but she can and it worked. Aside from that, she recorded this at Giles Peterson’s show in London and was put on the spot. They asked her to do a jazz piece, and with no rehearsal, this is what she did. She even said her keyboardist fumbled around a little with it, as they hadn’t done the piece in a while.

Thus, it’s a masterpiece. To sing this song on the spot with no rehearsal and have it sound like that is amazing.

I’m absolutely baffled by these responses. Is this a black vs white issue? because i don’t understand the overpraising of Amy’s version. It was good, yes. But Vocally Jasmines was way better, elite standard.

Amy has a great voice, but look at how easy her vocal style can be emulated. Theres about 5 new white artists out in uk at the moment, all sounding like amy whinehouse, and doing a decent job at it. None of them could come close to jasmine’s vocal ability. She sang the song live, and on the spot.

Amy definetely is an individual, her overall style & appearance is unique. But this battle is about vocals, and Jasmine won. She does not have a typical church voice, thats such an insult. Thats the problem with society, if a black person sings great, it’s just expected from them as if it’s in their genes. If a white person is able to emulate a black person, they become the great white hope.
It’s a shame, I do think Amy’s unique, but she lost this one.

AMY is just, THAT HOT SHIT for real! I mean Jazmine is lovely, but Ummmm, there’s already one Kim Burrell… music already lacks enough originality!

They both sang the song well with thier own little twist to it. I like both artists so it is hard to choose, but if I had jto choose one i would choose my girl Amy Winehouse. This song fits her style of music better. The song has to much age on it for Jazmine.

It would have to be a tie..because they are doing two different takes to the piece. As a lot of people have said Jaz has a great amount of runs on the song which takes away from it. I must say, I jjst learned about this Jazmine chick and decided to listen to both version of the song (’Round Midnight) and I definitely have to say Amy did a better job with the song. She brought you into the song immediately, especially those people who are not traditional jazz listener. As for Jazmine, she may have the more traditional jazz sound - which tends to put me to sleep. This is no indication of her ability to sing because I do like her hit single “Need U Bad”, it is pretty good.

So, in summary, if your not the traditional jazz listener I would recommend Amy’s version of the song because she put a more uptown vibe/beat to the jazzy hit song.

I prefer Jazmine’s version of the song, but it sounds more like a
Kim Burrell / Vanessa Bell Armstrong version of the song. Listening to this tells me why she chose secular over gospel. She sounds good, just not original!

Her version has much soul and depth. One CANNOT get this unless you’ve been oppressed, depressed, regressed and then blessed. Please don’t mistake her vibrato for runs. If you listen closely(or have musical ear) to her song, she has more of a vibrato which is extremely difficult to control. She also has the gift to do this song in sooooo many variety of styles.I know someone who has her tone almost exactly and she says it’s automatic with the vibrato in her vocal cords. Amy on the otherhand is limited to the jazzy version. She adds no seasoning to her version. YES race has a lot to do with it. Caucasians haven’t been through enough to add a sizzle to certain songs. Even the most soulful non-African American singer DOESN’T have the sultry we add to a song. One can sing this song with her version and still bring some flava(which she DOESN’T HAVE). Ella sang this song with an up tempo beat and sounds fabulous.

I can not choose. These are two very talented women. I like the fact that the two took a different approach. Although Amy Winehouse did have me at my computer vibing so. I don’t know maybe Ms. Winehouse gets it.

Jasmine definitely listened to Kim Burrell growing up, however too much running happening. Amy had more pocket and it got my attention. So ill have to rock with Amy. Less is More.

Both have huge/powerful vocals. I am smitten with Mz Sullivan’s melodious runs and the flexibilty in her voice. However, I believe Ms Winehouse a little more this time around. I think that Amy’s rendition grabs your attention because the tempo is so upbeat. However Jazmine’s has a classic jazz sound. Her voice is so mature and soultry.

I like some of Amy’s stuff and she has a good voice, but Jaz is just outstanding, her vocals and all. I think Jazmine has a long successful career ahead of her.

I listen to both music samples and was definitely leaning towards Amy Winehouse’s funkier version when I read comment # 45 who suggested that an artist named LEDISI was better and she included a link that allowed you to listen to Ledisi’s version of the same song, so now, even though she was not in the original comparison, which is a shame, because she blew both Amy Winehouse & Jazmine Sullivan’s versions of “Round Midnight” to bits!!! In my opinion, HER, version was BEST!!!! Thanks 4 the recommendation #45!

i love jasmine Sullivan but Amy winehouse’s version is way better and i love this version jasmine’s is too slow and amy’s is just jazzy spucky and fun

The epitome of Jazz is runs and scants… so what are some of you people talking about when you say she has to many runs and riffs????? Are you guys serious ???? Jazz did her thang and she did it well. If I gonna say this is a true jazz piece it is Jazz. If i am gonna say this is a modern jazz like piece then I can say Amy. But as for as VOCALS JAZZ is the #1. Amy is great too. But to me the winner is JAZZ!!!!!! Over the top!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

I like both of the artist’s versions but Amy’s is too new school for me. Jazmine’s captures the essence and the soul of the song which makes it very classical. They both did an incredibly awesome job. But Jazmine has my vote.

wow! until now i never really heard any of amy winehouse music, but this midnight song, wow!!! i’m such a fan now. she really needs to quit acting a fool, i just use to see amy action’s on tmz, i never thought she was bad as in good. i think she might be sick because of drugs wow!!! i feal so sorry for her. i thoght she was a joke, but she’s for real. jasmine need’s to look at what amy done to herself and learn, we all can learn something here. i could listen to amy’s version all day . its amy straight up on the real, that other womans song was ok but amy’s version is is the better of the 3

First I would like to say I love both young ladies, with that said, Amy voice is very hypnotic, plus her version has a savory jazz flare to it…. So I prefer Amy’s version.

I absolutely love Jazmine but Amy Winehouse has this one hands down. Sorry Jaz….

I feel both Jazmine and Amy hit the material right on the mark even though they presented two vastly different styles. Which is better depends on the mood of the moment. I appreciate both.

I like Jazmine version the most, because that’s the mood i am in now. Tomorrow i may like Amy’s version most. But tonight, tonight, i feel Jazmine. They’re both amazing.

Jazmine Sullivan does a very good rendition as does Ledisi. I cannot choose between materpieces!
