@ 11. I’m assuming they are targeting the younger crowd (i.e. elementary and middle school girls). If you peep their line of bags, it just looks real young. I wouldn’t rock their sneakers because they just look like rip-offs of other brands. Can’t knock them though, because they are doing something right.

14.

Monday, March 17, 2008 /

The Simmons Sisters are doing their thing… there are a lot of upstart businesses that wish they sold $15 mil the first year. Congratulations to them.

As far as the obligatory question “who wears/buys that sh!t”? folk say the same thing about Sean John and Rocawear and they are still grossing over $200 and 300 mil a year.

Ever consider the world is bigger than your fashion circle of friends?

15.

WHYASKWHY

Monday, March 17, 2008 /

THE POINT IS:

***They are positive woman
***They represent us well
***They are trying to make their OWN money
***They are not drinking and driving
***They are not showing their behinds
***They are not doing drugs

THEREFORE, we shouldn’t hate.

The target audience is middle/high school.

@ 11, I know they do big biz in NY.
On a positive note, at least they’re at the start of creating a legacy for their future generation. I just hope their kids become inspired to do something uplifting with that legacy. Lord knows another sneaker line is not going to help save the planet.

Congrats to the Simmons sisters… It’s been a year already.
I support Pastry, I buy them religously, i wish people would stop hating on black successful young woman we need more of them in the industry.

I know those shoes are hot in NYC, their all about colors out there. #15 was so on point with that comment. Even though I don’t like the shoes, I’m not going to say anything negative because they are young black females making money. They don’t have to show off their bodies or better yet, sell their bodies to advance in that type of industry.

25.

Monday, March 17, 2008 /

My nieces also rock Pastries– One is in middle school and is in 10th grade. They’re cute shoes and it is great to see to young ladies take pride in themselves by attempting to make their own way world— and doing so with class, style and poise. I agree totally @15! These girls deserve mad props!

Actually, sometimes, it depends on where the shoe was sold, and the type of customers that are more likely to buy it..I live in DC and A LOT of young kids) wear their sneaks..The r cute, but a little gawdy, sometimes..But I’m glad their doing well.. We need more BLACK entrepreneurs!!

Wow a year already. I’m very proud of them and happy they sold 15million in their first year. All the negative comments just don’t make much sense to me. I think the sneakers are cute for little children rather than buying your child a pair of jordans just to say that your child wears jordans. They are young black women who chose to go out and pursue something rather than bite off their dad’s money all of their life and I appreciate them for that. They also not out there shaking their behinds in some video.

I really like the Simmons’ Sisters, but I know I can’t be the only one who thinks the $15 million in sales is an exaggerated, publicity-driven lie. I have seen only 2 girls within the last year rock those shoes in my state. I live on the east coast, but maybe they are pretty popular in the midwest or westcoast????

I’m not knocking their hustles, but the shoes are poorly made. But their cool for the teeny boppers, high schoolers. I’m in my late twenties, so I would rather rock some fresh, well-made nikes.

50.

Monday, March 17, 2008 /

These girls are very beautiful, intelligent, young respectable women. We should be supporting them and not tearing them down. They are doing something positive, productive and constructive with their lives. Its sad that we don’t get to see news stories about the good that black celebrities do in the media. Its ashame that all we see is these white celebrities breaking down, not wearing panties, and participating in other self destructing behavior. People no one else is going to support us (people of color) nearly as much as we can support our brothas and sistas….so please stop the hatin’

52.

The Wire Addict

Monday, March 17, 2008 /

I agree with you #50!!! But that is exactly why I don’t believe they sold $15 million…because I haven’t seen more than 2 black people in the entire state of Maryland wear these shoes–and trust me i get around. When we as black people start opening our wallets to this African-American owned sneaker company, then they will actually sell $15 million in pastries..lol

i actually like their shoes although i would buy them for my daughter, not for myself. they are cute for young girls to wear. of course they dont sell them where i live (in the land of entrapment aka new mexico). but i do applaud them for doing something for themselves instead of living off of their parents like they could be doing.

My 11 year old loves them! Between me and her dad’s side of the family she has 4 pair. So the kiddies are checking for them for sure!

The Simmons look so cute!

59.

the one is back

Monday, March 17, 2008 /

@52 and 50 we don’t wear their sneakers but NYers and NJ people do. I know the East Coast has some of the most fashion forward and backwards people, but there are other states and obviously someone is rocking their shoes.

I do not wear multicolor anything, so it doesnt appeal to me, but if they toned it down I would support them because I like these sisters!

To the Simmons sisters keep doing you’re thing. Isn’t it great that these sisters have a positive image to counter balance people like the Kardashians (sex tape, naked pictures, inappropriate behavior) and somehwhat the Knowles (with the shot gun wedding and baby at 17).

I am older then them but I look at them as role models of what really having God in your life and a loving family can do.

the one has spoken…is Toschinna (sp?) Arnold pregnant or is it the dress…just asking?

Congratulations!! and of course adults arent the ones buying these shoes! I’m pretty sure the girls intended to market them to a younger crowd b/c they know that’s where the money is at. Smart move ladies, very proud of them.

on a side note: this post should be loaded with comments of congratulations, but instead, every other person has something negative to say. This is why we will never come up as a people, we really need to do better.

62.

Chuck

Monday, March 17, 2008 /

To everybody who is saying “i dont ever see anybody wearing them/how could they have made that much money” - people dont realize that the $$$ market is ages 17-24 right now, those are the people who spend money, which is why iTunes has damn near taken over music industry sales as quick as it has - its why Soulja Boy, Raven-Symone, and LeBron all do the numbers they do with their brands, and i dont think its anything wrong with it - they are catering to their demographic, rather than Soulja Boy trying to make music for the older crowd, Raven-Symone trying to do movies with the current crop of black actors, or LeBron trying to appeal his sneakers to the older heads. Theyre basically staying in their own lane within their age range, and these 2 girls as long as the Runs House series has been on, theyre not that old either and are under 25, so it all works out in the long run.

63.

I dont understand why people would hate on Vanessa and Angela, when they are successful young ladies who are well prsented, do not ride off the success of their father and are successful business women.

Its a shame that the media barely ever talk about these girls apart from CL and a few other black blogs, they never get any shine anywhere else whilst the likes of Kim Kardarshian who fucks for fame, so does Paris and all those other hollywood girls, and they live off their fathers wealth. Whilst Angela and Vanessa do the opposite they make their own money! They should be applauded not criticised.
