HELP STOP WORLD HUNGER
Monday, March 31, 2008

In 2005, Peter Menzel published Hungry Planet which featurerd a photographic study of families from around the world, revealing what people eat during the course of one week. The photo above shows the Revis family from North Carolina. View more from the Time photo galleries of “What the World Eats”.
April is National Food Month, but not everyone is blessed to have enough food. In fact, according to Bread for the World, 854 million people in the world go hungry and in developing countries over 9 million children die every year from hunger and malnutrition.
But there is something we all can do to help.
Websites such as FreeRice, FreeFlour and Helpuu all allow you to help end hunger at no cost. The Hunger Site also lists a number of ways to help free of charge.
Special shout out to CL Reader Lee for reference links.

I remember seeing this pic before…when I saw it… I said to myself “this is why Americans are so sick.” We eat, eat, eat anything that comes in front of us and then we deal with the pain later. Things like cancer, diabetes, and high blood pressure are all preventable and curable…but we would rather participate in scam breast cancer walks. How foolish is that? Walking to raise breast cancer awareness…its all in the name- AWARENESS…not CURE. If you are sick…what good is it that I make other people aware of your sickness if I’m not willing to cure it? There is no money in the cure. But hey…if you could earn billions of dollars by selling that food in the picture above…or if you could collect millions of dollars in donations for breast cancer…what would you do?

What’s interesting to me is that there was a lot of soda and snacks in families groceries. Also, we Americans eat WAY to much. True prices in other countries are different, but we really need to curb our appetites.
J.Dakar - your research is such a refresher to the internet.

I saw these pics in an email a few months back. We were amazed! Americans (myself included) need to stay away from so much processed food. I’ll be glad to help out.

I remember seeing this pics months ago and being SHOCKED at how differently the weekly intake was for families around the world…. not just the types of food we eat, but the AMOUNTS…
American’s are certainly indulgent — myself included.

IT’S ENOUGH FOOD IN THIS WORLD TO FEED EVERY SINGLE MUTHA FUCKA LIVING ON THIS PLANET. NOBODY’S STOMACH SHOULD BE HURTING FROM HUNGER. BUILD UP SOME MCDONALD’S AND POPEYES CHICKENS IN SOME OF THESE HUNGRY AREAS AND LET THEM MUTHA FUCKAS EAT FOR FREE.

The New York Times had a great article earlier this month on “Free Lunch Isn’t Cool, So Some Students Go Hungry“.
I remember a student coming to a fellow teacher’s classroom asking for a dollar so he could get lunch because his mom wouldn’t give him money. That really got to me because I can’t imagine sending my child to school without food to eat or money so they could get something to eat.
As Lee mentioned in one of our exchanges, “it doesn’t take much to be kind and do well for others!” That’s exactly what Doing Good and Doing Well (DGADW) is all about.
As many have mentioned, the family in the photo (as well as many Americans) consumes tons of processed foods. We really need to up our eating game with more fruits and vegetables to help combat the numerous health issues that plague our communities.

Yep..sure is.. @ For Obama…the pictures where nice to look at..but taking time to read the article was mind blowing..a family of 10+ spending less than $30 a week on food when that doesn’t even buy the two pizza’s the family in North Carolina buy..makes you think..

Great article, Over 6O% of americans are OVERWEIGHT, while millions of people in this country (U.S.) and others are starving! Maybe in the name of a food lifestyle change we can take the money we would normally spend on excess foods, dieting fads, restaurant bills, and hey even future medical bills, and send a percentage of that money to one of those families.

Some people probably dont know how unfortunate other people are in developing countries. It is a serious issue which should be raised and should be done about.

somebody mentioned how fortunate you are, what? do you see this food. All packages, infested with fat, sugar, salt, chemicals, artificial colors, preservatives, pesticides, hormones and genetically modified. It’s a shame. This is how we are enslaves. We think we are living large but we are slaves, through our diets.
Yall, take care of yourselves. Consider eating organic, all natural and vegetarian.
Peace

This is truly amazing. Awful and disgusting, but really amazing that we eat like this everyday. And while it’s certainly not good for us, at least the majority of us don’t have to wonder where our next meal is coming from, processed or not. It’s just really a shame that there are people on this earth, in this country, in this city, hell, in this block that are begging to just get a little food while we throw away what we don’t like. I swear! I’m going to really start doing better on a personal level, eating better and healthier and trying to give. As long as it’s a reputable charity. Don’t want my kindness to be a weakness and for me to get worked over.
