♫ Almost September – Beautiful

Meet Almost September. The group is composed of veteran lyricist MC Lyte, producer/writer/vocalist Whitey and producer/writer Jared Lee. Basically everyone is familiar with MC Lyte and even though Whitey and Jared Lee may not be household names, many of you have heard some of their productions. They have written and produced for the likes of India.Arie, Tyrese, Usher, Floetry, Jon B and more.

The group met by chance while they were working on a recent Macy Gray album. One night when Macy was unable to attend a scheduled session, Lyte heard a song Whitey and Jared were working on immediately began penning some lyrics and you know the rest is history.

We posted this song late last year as a new MC Lyte song, but we weren’t aware she was in a new group. So we are reintroducing it. Make sure you peep their myspace page for more info.

It’s not half bad, but who’d see MC Lyte trying to make a come back? Those other guys sound cool too.

  2. heartbreaker

I say hot, the song is really smooth. I like it.

  3. Ladyssolady

No way in hell is that Lyte in the pic!! If so, dammmnnnn, she looks great!! I love the production and ad-libs in the background. Like this song, kick-back, feel good type song.

  4. I like it…..MC Lytes’s voice is historical.

  5. PK

The vocals and backing track are smooth and mesh pretty well, but Lyte’s tone and flow are NOT on. Something’s off when she raps over it.

Overall, it’s mostly monotonous and redundant after the first minute.
Hopefully they’ll come out with something that’s a bit more solid; they’re all individually talented.

  6. ThinkAboutIt

Before I actually read the post, I was thinking, that girl looks like MC Lyte — She is aging well, well, actually she’s not aging at all.

It’s no paper thin, but Lyte still has it.

  7. Damn Straight

I like it- it’s cool and laid back.
Also, anything with MC Lyte on it is fine by me.

  8. Giggles

Yea Lyte looks really really young!
I like the fact that they are all about encouraging good quality music as stated on the myspace page.
But this song is okay to me, not amazing but good. I wouldn’t call myself a fan quite yet

  9. FAMU01

Mc. Lyte needs to stop, isn’t she like 40. It’s time to let the rappin go boo boo.

  10. Jake Steed

#9 LoL! Yeah she’s about 40 but remember we all get old someday.

  11. wow, since when was 40 old, yall talkin bout girl like she elderly

  12. Tiffany

This was hot. MC Lyte looks good!

  13. Questioneverything

YESSS! Thanks, Angel! Something for us “old heads”!! lol Kids today have Lil Mama and lip gloss and I had MC L-Y-T-E!! Didn’t know about the new group but will be looking out for them!

  14. a.k.a. new yorker

mc lyte looks great! she looks extra young. i thought she was 20. wow

    not feeling the song though

  15. Dlish

    I love MC Lyte..and um isn’t Jay-Z almost 40? PUHLEASE fall back!

  16. Mutada al sader

MC Lyte is a class act and anyone who puts her down is crazy. This joint is nice. I would’nt buy it but its nice.

  17. Wow! MC Lyte was always my favorite (her & Latifah) Because they never compromised their body for their music. Even Salt N Pepa took complete control over their I-can-be-sexy-if-I-want-to image without looking like complete whores (aka Lil Kim / Trina/ & nasty ass Khia).
I think MC Lyte is timeless! I can get with this. Hot!
We need the younger generation of up & coming female artist to have stronger role-models in the game who doesn’t exude cheap sex with a stripper for a dollar bill.

And as far as people who say “She/He’s too old to rap”, Think about it.
Rap is a music of an entire generation now. It’s an even stronger force to be reckoned with in this day in age & account for a mass percentage of record sales, radio play, and culture within the urban & surbuban community alike. To feel like a 40 year old rap vet should stop rapping is the same thing as telling a 65 year old Aretha Franklin to stop singing Gospel, R&B, Rock, Soul & Jazz music.
Same difference, & either way it’s just a sin!

    Rap on L.Y.T.E!

  18. Softest Place On Earth

I think its hot the vocals are nice

  19. NaijaQT

I actually like the song. I listened to it twice and it sounded better the second time around. It has a nice, chill vibe to it, like a track that you can cruise to in the car. The ad libs at the end of track, which sounded like Nas and Chuck D of Public Enemy was a nice addition as well. Big ups to MC lyte, as my soror she can do no wrong in my book!!! I truly wish her the best with her career!

  20. BEAUTY SCHOOL DROP OUT

#17 you hit it on the spot…people need to think before they talk…cuz i’d rather here these “old” rappers spit something of substance than these youngins spittin nonsense…anyway can’t hear the song but i’ll support Mz Lyte in anything she does cuz she is the best female hip hop rapper…i mean i coulda said one of but really what other female rappers are out there…eve fell off…foxxy’s in jail…kim is doing what she do and remy’s trying to stay out of jail…anyone else aint even worth mentioning

  21. Doll-face

I enjoyed MC Lyte verse but the rest, Uh IDK

  22. Noelle Alexandrea Teague

    >> they just look like they haVE A NICE SOUND… ;

  23. MISSISSIPPI G_DDAMN

@#9 Go back to the sandbox and play with your blocks. You don’t seem old enough to have any credible opinion on this track considering your inane comments about age.

This track is hot. And MC Lyte proves she’s not out the game yet.

  24. Sharon

I say it’s hot. It’s a really easy listen and the story in the song is good.

  25. MsShe'

    HOT!

Lyte still has it. Her voice is terrible (good). A sunny day , feel good, cruisin’ song.

  26. C. Curry

OK..ok I can feel this. I miss that time when music made you feel good. Like a cool cup on a hot Texas day sitting on the back porch at your grandma’s house. Mannnn….I love this…..

    Good times….

  27. Staci

I’ll take anything with substance these days!

  28. troy

hotttttttttttttttt record may be some new shhhhhhhhh

  29. Emma V's Great-Grandaughter

    The song is hot.

    I agree # 17.

  30. it ain't right, alright?!

good to hear mc lyte’s voice again.
she’s one of my favorite’s still!!!
(kick this one here for me & my dj….)

  31. OBAMA TO THE END

I feel you #9. I mean would you want your mother rappin and dressing like she was 20? It’s time to let it go, let someone else get there shine on.

It’s a shame a lot of the old school rappers didn’t make the kind of money these rappers make now. They should’ve invested instead of buying all that gold jewelry.

  32. J-Me

I love it! Music needs this.

  33. That doesn’t even look like MC Lyte in that picture!

  34. Kholi

i think it’s hot … but MC Lyte can make anything amazing.

  35. MISSISSIPPI G_DDAMN

Sorry #9 – My comment was directed at #10.

  36. Jonathan

wow, this was not hot at all, sorry boo boo you too old to be making new records, lighten up your freshness, but the haircut is hot. HA

  37. kevin

hot record & Lyte is still sexy !

  38. ms.kimba412

Definitely HOT! Love me some MC Lyte.

  39. My - P.O.V. - is....

“You can cha cha cha to dis Mardi Gras. I’m the dopest female that you’ve heard thus far. And I do get better, the voice gets wetter. Nobody gets hurt! As long as you let her”. Haha!!!! MC Lyte is and will always be the real deal. Ya heard me?!!!!!
So continue to do you,Boo. I’m with cha all the way.

  40. M to tha...

I was thinking that she looks like MC Lyte, and then bam, it is her. I love MC Lyte, always have. Sounds good. Do ya thang Lyte. She is so pretty. Looking younger by the day!

  41. ah-boo

hot! mc lyte doesn’t look like a rugged dude anymore and the song is fiyah!

  42. BiB

#16 I agree. It shows you how some ppl contradict themselves. Jay-Z is all the rave and he may just be a tad bit older than MC Lyte.

Besides, I think there are more celebs in their 40′s that got it going on more so than the 20 yr olds. AND THESE 20 YR OLDS ARE COPYING FROM THE 40 YR OLDS.

Don’t get me started. Has there ever been a rap video that could outshine “Self Destruction”?

Oh, the song. It’s okay. MC Lyte has turned out to be a pretty good actress.

  43. BiB

#34 Gold is not that expensive (you know that) so I don’t understand your comment. I am sure if an older rapper heard you say that, they would really be hurt. They rapped about substance and the MAN didn’t want to hear that. These foolish rappers today are talking about everything but substance with the exception of a few, and they are making crazy money. It’s no different from the money New Edition made. They paved the way for Boys to Men.

50 and the rest of them are standing on the shoulders of giants.

  44. Andre Le Dale

#16 Jay Z is in his 40′s. He has been on his 37th birthday the past 5 years.

  45. Lyte

I love it how people do THEIR math. Don’t bother trying to figure it out, I’m not 40 and have over 1000 days before I get there, don’t hate. Back to math class ) Thanks for the love though!! I appreciate all the great comments. Aside from that, I look younger than any rapper out there with a young in front of their name. Matter fact my new alias is “YOUNG MC…… LYTE” LMAO. LOVE YA

  46. gov't cheese

I love Lyte….very inspiring..and to those stuck on the age thing…think about it..We are the only genre of music, ironically dominated by minorities that allow people(the industry) tell us what to do, how to do and when to do it…What makes Mick Jagger, Bono, Sting, Aerosmith and all those other legendary rockers any different from our legends. STOP letting other folks brainwash you into what to listen to and who to listen to. If Jay Z is hot he hot, if Lyte is hot she hot…Hip-hop is not a fly by night music as they thought it would be and wish it was- this only proves it has substance, history, and legends and is here to stay! Lets crown our seasoned/legendary/inspiring artists and support them as they (other genres) do theirs. Try buying a ticket to a legendary rock group’s concert after the first day or two its been on sale ,matter fact go to a concert and witness the support respect and love!!!

  47. vonce

OK people If lyte got her deal when she was 16 (and she did) she’s not 40 she’ in her early 30′s . Math people, use your fingers if you need to, stop trying to do the math in your head, it’s not working. More importantly if the music is banging who cares what age the artist is. The next time your moving your head to Marvin gaye or Prince you better be careful if your 17 – 30 yrs, might damage your rep. I love MC LYTE because she’s Fly and her voice on any track is the business.

  48. warriorgyrl

Nice. Smooth! It takes me back to the 90′s when MC Lyte was out. The song has meaning. It’s not an x-rated tape put into words with a fast beat. It’s something you can chill and groove too.

  49. Ambezzy

Yo so i just stopped through this to see what all yall thought about The new thing wit Almost September….n i ran across them accidentally one day and i heard the track wit India Arie…i was like damn i gotta hear more…finally some music wit some meaning..im fairly young but i do enjoy some good proverbs once in awhile….cause the crap i mean music that is played now is pretty much one dimensional….Big ups to u MC LYTE no matter what anyone says or if they feel its a hit or miss…THIS IS THE SHIT THAT made hip-hop and if anyone want to agrue me down then go read somthin n get at me!!!!!!11
