MUSIC NEWS: JANET’S DISCIPLINE IS #1 / CHRISTINA AGUILERA’S GOES BACK TO POP
Wednesday, March 5, 2008

According to Hitsdailydouble.com, Janet Jackson has landed the #1 spot on next week’s Billboard charts. Interestingly enough though, it’s been said that label heads are not that happy with the 178,000 copies sold, due to the huge promotion that Def Jam pushed behind the project. Discipline landing this spot will be the first time Janet has had a #1 album since 2001’s All For You, but this is also her lowest first week sales of her career.
Despite disappointing sales, I’m glad that Janet debut at #1 and has been getting love from the fans. Music just isn’t selling the way it used to, so I’m not surprised, but I definitely did think the numbers would a be little higher for her. In any event, Erykah Badu’s new project, New Amerykah, Part One (4th World War) enter the charts at #2 with 123,000 copies sold. Get it, Erykah. I finally got a chance to listen to the album in its entirety and absolutely loved it.
I will say another thing, though. It is good to see Janet doing appearances and performances again. The video for “Rock With U” premieres tonight on BET and Janet will be appearing on SNL next week!
CHRISTINA AGUILERA’S NEXT ALBUM TO BE POP

Just after the birth of her first child, Christina Aguilera is ready to hit the studio again to work on a new studio album, a follow-up to 2006’s Back to Basics. In a recent interview with SOHH.com, producer DJ Premier revealed details on Christina Aguilera’s new project.
“I’m definitely working with her on the next album,” Premier said.
“She’s doing an all pop album again, but she wants me to keep the tone like what we did before. She’s ready to start next month… She’s so cool, she’s like my little sister now.”
I’m wondering what “pop” means for right now. Don’t get me wrong, I used to be a huge Christina fan. And even though I appreciated what she did on Back to Basics, it wasn’t my favorite album by her. As a matter of fact, I didn’t really get into all that much. It just seemed like she was trying too hard to prove something. We already know the girl has pipes, but I wish she would get back to singing, instead of screaming - which I feel like she does a lot.

Janet last 2 albums have been of the wacker consistency..>SHe’s released 3 albums in the last 4 years..that shit is reseved for rookies…
ITs too late now…she just needs to let this album do watever its gonna do..which isnt much and keep it moving…take 10 years off..then maybe would want to buy your album..bcuz yo she’s getting to damn old to do this teeny bopper music
Xtina…hmmm Back to Basics didnt sell like she wanted it to…go back to being a sellout bc thats where the money is..Upgrade

Those aren’t the official numbers for Janet’s Discipline. iTunes and Amazon sales still have to be counted. Her sales should be higher than that once soundscan gives the official numbers. But I still find it strange that 20 Y.O. debuted at #2 with 297k sold, but with all of the promo she’s done for Discipline, the album is expected to sell under 200k. Congrats to her for having the #1 album in the country.
That’s because she was trying too hard to prove something, Brian. By the way, when did Christina ever leave “Pop” music? Her music has already been Pop, with an R&B feel to it. At least with Stripped and B2B. She’s only doing a “Pop” album because B2B fell way below the sales of Stripped, and that sound just didn’t cut it for her. Many of us still don’t have the slightest clue why she decided to make such an album anyway. Whatever.
I’ve never been of fan of Aguilera’s nor her music anyway.

i loved christina’s last album. i think that soul is where her heart is, and the only reason why she’s considering pop is to attract a wider audience, which is understandable. i mean cause think about it, how many white people are going to buy a soulful album.??? not many…. she probably sold more albums sticking to “pop.”

WHAT ARE YOU GUYS TALKING ABOUT? “BACK TO BASICS” DID VERY WELL. IT SOLD OVER 300,000 COPIES IN THE FIRST WEEK. SHE WON 2 GRAMMYS OFF OF THAT ALBUM. BUT SHE COULD RELEASED MORE SINGLES OFF OF IT. SHE ONLY RELEASED 3 AND T WAS A DOULBE-DISC ALBUM. CHRISTINA IS ONE OF THE ONLY SINGERS WHO CAN ACTUALLY SING.

I bought both Janet’s and Erykah’s and I want my money back from my purchase of that New Amerykah… that is some ish 10 tracks and I only like 2. its nothing like Mama’s Gun which is my favorite. Back to Janet I like it and since Billboard is the classifier of #1 CDS in America not itunes Janet did sell 181,000 I too was hoping it was more. Christina I liked Back 2 the Basics. I thought it was good.

NUMBER ONE BOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
http://www.billboard.biz/...098734cd47aec7f263da73df4
Eat that. I know the HATERS are going to find some justification to get their hate on (they gotta work with SOMETHING) but #1 is #1
The ironic thing about this is, Damita Jo (which is a great album, by the way) is her second best first week selling album after All For You (pushed 600,000) with 380,000, WHICH IS MORE THAT 1993′S JANET. ALBUM, WHICH WAS 350,000. But yet because ‘janet.’ was #1 and Damita Jo is #2, we call Damita Jo a flop, lol… I guess you can argue that ‘janet.’ had the hit singles (Thats the way love goes, If, Again, etc).
Don’t tell nobody what to do with their lives and career. JJ is going to do whatever the hell she wants. You got some nerve to put ‘teenybopper’ with the name Janet anywhere. When Janet was these broads’ ages, she was doing Control and Rhythm Nation. I’m about tired of these know-nothings lumping Janet into with all these new artists just because shes black and female — so she presumably most be the same. Janet had substance and recognition.
Anyway….
NUMBER ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 LOL.

I’m a Christina fan but she seems to follow the trends. If DJ premiere is producing on the album, does this mean he is going pop now since she wants a pop sound? Or is he giving her hip hop tracks? If so, then the album won’t be all pop as he stated.
I’m so sick of when artists albums don’t sell as well it’s blamed “oh, well albums are just not selling…” No, Janet’s album didn’t sell well because people are simply not as interested in her as they once was. Period. Alicia Keys, Mary, Kanye and others have sold well there first week, so that is no excuse for Janet.

Back to Basics was a classic! That was her best work to date. I don’t think it was a matter of her “screaming”. She over sings whether she’s doing pop or soul. It’s just her style. Yeah it does sound like she’s trying to prove something, but the material on Back to Basics was superb to say the least.

Either way Janet is still breaking records with her lowest first week sales ever. She is now in a two way tie for second place for the most #1 albums with Madonna of all people and Barbara the Nose holding it down in the first spot. Yes, Alicia’s album sold like crazy and Mary got her platinum plaque in 3 weeks big deal and big ups to them. We’re speaking on relevancy 25+ years and you still put up a number 1 album. …and telling people to retire who are making money is retarded. You retire right now and go collect some social security. it’s probably more than you make now anyways. This album will be a slow burn for Janet no doubt she has good singles on the album and a year later it be doing what Call on Me does and keep it self on the charts for a year plus watch and see.

Shouldnt retire, just find a new formula. The oversexed image has gotten old. Which is why the masses have moved on to different artists and left her wondering why.

I brought Erykah Badu’s album over the weekend and I must say I was not 100% pleased with the outcome as everyone else seemed to be. I just wasn’t feeling her vibe she had going on with this album but hey that’s her style and Erykah has always had her own style as well as being in her own state of mind. Don’t get me wrong though I still did enjoy listening to it but I’d say Baduizm was one of her best albums.
Telephone is my ish though, it has that classic “Baduizm” feel to it. Damn, that’s why I love that album so much.
As far as Janet is concerned, congratulations for her taking the number one spot on the charts. I’ve never been a big Janet fan (GASP!) and to be honest I’m not feeling her latest single. To me it’s like I’m just not interested in Janet anymore, she had her time to shine, now it’s time to let it go and venture toward something else. I can see if she was coming back with a bang each and every time (as in Mariah’s case in 06′), but it’s like she keeps trying and getting the same results. So I can sort of see why some people are saying she needs to go get a seat and sit the hell down some where. LOL That is my opinion, JANET STANS GET THE FUCK OFF ME!!
I’m glad to see Christina going back to her “pop roots” because I wasn’t really feeling her whole “60’s vibe” she had going on with the last album. Kudos to her!

I LOVE JANET AND ALL, BUT NOBODY IS TELLING MADONNA TO RETIRE BECAUSE SHE REINVENTS HERSELF!!!! CONTINUOUSLY!!!
JANET IS STILL DOING MICHAEL AND THAT IS PLAYED THE FUCK OUT…
NOBODY IS FEELING THAT FROM HER ANYMORE. THERE DOESNT’ SEEM TO BE ANYTHING NEW THAT SHE’S BRINGING TO THE TABLE–ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING SINGING ISN’T SOMETHING SHE’S THAT GREAT AT.
NOW IF MICHAEL DID FEEDBACK AND PROMOTED IT, THAT WOULD BE SOME HOT FIYAH!!! HE WOULD SOUND BETTER SINGING IT TOO, BECAUSE MJ ACTUALLY HAS SKILLS WITH THE VOCALS. HE’S JUST THE CRAZY ONE AND SHE STILL HAS SOME SEMBLANCE OF A SANE MIND.
BUT, SHE’S PLAYED NOW. THE YOUNGINS HAVE STEPPED THE GAME UP (ALICIA, BEY), AND MARY IS STILL PROVING HER RELEVANCE BY STEPPING UP HER VOCAL GAME WITH EACH ALBUM.
SIMPLY CHANGING CHOREOGRAPHY AIN’T GONNA MAKE PEOPLE RUN OUT AND BUY YOUR RECORDS. DAMMIT, YOU GOTTA SAAAAAANNNNNNGGG!!!!

i bought both erykah and janets album’s and luv them both, my only issue with janets album is with 22 tracks on the cd it seems really short. but i’m glad she #1 181k is still good, with a lead single like feedback, i wasn’t expecting it to do like 700k like alicia and mary, a larger audience can relate more to mary and alicia’s singles, people are not always in a feedback mood, which is why she sold more back in her depressed, i’m grown now, & “(the jacksons??…never heard of them)” days. but shes changed and seems happier now so i think her career ain’t goin no where just yet.

Janet has absolutely nothing to be unhappy about, and everything to smile about. And shame on Def Jam for saying they are dissappointed in the sales because of all their marketing….WTF! They only started going hard marketing her 1 week before the cd was released, what the hell did they expect…most artists promote 6-8 before that. I think her numbers were damn good for one solid week of aggressive marketing and basically no radio play time. Some of my white girlfriends didn’t even know she had a cd dropping until now…that shows you they marketing effected her numbers cause the cd is solid.
But i know her sales will skyrocket once her videos drop. And please, she about to kill once she goes on tour this summer, her pockets gone be long.
Overall i say good job to her.
Also, i’m still getting use to Erykah’s cd…i like it, but it’s still growing on me. And she did damn good for basically no marketing at all. But i have been hearing honey on the radio a good deal.

I trying to figure out this “Promotional Push” everybody keeps talking about that Janet did. Because I only saw her on a couple of shows last week. Radio don’t play her songs and MTV just put feedback into rotation last week as well. In terms of Promotion that ain’t shit! Alicia Keys, Kanye and Mary all had WAY more promo than Janet. “No one” and “Just fine” were all over the damn radio, plus Alicia and Mary released around the holiday season. Janet is still blacklisted at Clear channel radio stations (which is owned by CBS), she has no hit singles, plus people keep clowning her about her age. With all these odds stacked against her, her numbers are actually better than they should be! She’s been through a lot over the last four years and and she’s pretty much been written off. Yet the woman stays on her grind, releasing albums, performing and doing videos that rarely get played. For those reasons alone she deserved the #1 spot. Give the sistah a break!

@#35. Having a #1 album does not equal success. An album can still hit the top of the charts and bomb. Sorry to burst your bubble.
The only people who are purchasing Discipline are Janet’s core audience. You can just tell from the very low first week sales. I understand that IDJ and Reid are trying their hardest to make sure that the album is a success, but what about radio? Apparently all of that promo that Janet did didn’t pay off. She did less promo with 20 Y.O. and it sold 297k in it’s first week. So the only thing that her stans can be happy about is getting her to #1. Everyone knows that the general public is not buying Discipline. I can only imagine what second week sales will look like. Then we have Mariah and Madonna releasing studio albums in April.
Her fans keep saying that Janet didn’t need radio for the album to be a hit, but we all know that they are the main one’s who supported her. And this album isn’t a hit, until it becomes a success. That’s the way I look at it. But for an album that is suppose to redeem Janet’s career, these numbers are terrible. Her fans can put a fake smile on their faces, and pretend as if everything is ok all they way.
She still has plenty of promo. There is still Oprah, Jay Leno, and David Letterman. Not to mention The View and Regis and Kelly. So much more….

christina aguilera is one of those singers who doesnt realise how talented they are, because all they wanna do is over-scream instead of trying to be more subtle with their music. She comes off as a total idiot when trying to describe her sound. Like when she was talkin about Back2Basics, she said it was “a throwback to the sounds of the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s with a modern twist”—GTFOH!!!!!!! How can u cover 3 decades on one album? She didnt seem to know that the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s are DIFFERENT SOUNDING ERAS OF MUSIC!!!!! And that “with a modern twist” line is pathetic. Not a single cliché unturned there lol. Shes an amazing singer, but her music is so vapid, in general and without depth. Its just that she thinks she can be like Joni Mitchell or Karen Carpenter or Janis Joplin or someone like that, just cause of her voice, and the “indie” crowd will love her when she tries to go into other genres. Britney Spears makes more original and convincing music than Christina. Shes been makin fresh sounding pop for years. Christina thought she’d become credible as soon as she did the VERY AVERAGE Stripped album and then the above average, yet nothing-special Back2Basics album.

Do not put Kanye in this when the only reason why his album sales are high is because of his lame gimmicks behind it. Graduation, the 50 and kanye beef is what gave him the big first week but he dropped over 70% percent the second week and for late registration his “Bush doesn’t care about Black People” on national tv just so happen was the week his album came out that gave him a push without the promo and gimmicks that “in the closet lame” would not sell that much. And yes Janet does not get the radio play she deserves because of CBS radio.

SOME OF YOU ARE A STRAIGHT UP LIAR….JANET DID NOT DO MORE PROMOTIONS WITH THIS CD THAN SHE DID WITH 20YR LIAR! I CAN’T STAND PEOPLE LIKE YOU WHO FUCKIN EXAGGERATE TO MAKE A DAMN POINT, COME CORRECT. JANET HAD ONE SINGLE RELEASED, WEEKS PRIOR TO THE CD’S RELEASED, AND IT RECEIVED BASICALLY NO AIRPLAY EVEN THOUGH WHEN IT WAS PREVIEWED EVEN ONCE ON THE RADIO, PEOPLE WERE BREAKING THEIR NECKS TO SAY HOW MUCH THEY LOVED IT. ALSO, WHAT’S ALL THE PROMOTIONS THAT YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT? YOU MEAN THE 1 WEEK OF MTV MARKETING, THAT HAPPENED THE WEEK THE CD WAS RELEASED? OR PERHAPS YOU MEAN ALL THE T.V. SHOWS SHE’S BEEN DOING IN THE EXACT SAME WEEK.
NO LET ME EXPLAINS HOW A FUCKIN ALBUM IS PROMOTED:
BEYONCE HAD ALL HER DAMN SONGS PLAYED ON THE RADIO ALMOST TWO MONTHS BEFORE HER CD ACTUALLY DROPPED, AND BEFORE THE CD DROPPED - WHICH NO ONE ELSE HAS EVER DONE BEFORE, SHE HAD ALREADY RELEASED 2 OFFICIAL VIDEOS FOR THE CD….ALSO, WHO COULDN’T HAVE KNOWN SHE HAD A CD OUT, THEY PLAYED HER MUSIC LITERALLY EVERY 15 FUCKIN MINUTES ON A DAMN DOT. AND SHE WAS EVERYWHERE MARKETING WEEKS BEFORE THE CD CAME OUT. THEY MADE HER A SUCCESS. AND THAT’S FORCED MARKETING AND PROMOTION, BUT HELL IT WORKED FOR HER.
MY POINT?…HOW THE HELL CAN PEOPLE COME ON HER AND “CERTIFY” SOMETHING ITO BE A DAMN FLOP WHEN FIRST OFF, IGNORANCE SURROUNDING HER AGE IS REAL THICK ON HERE, NUMBER TWO, THEY DIDN’T PLAY HER MUSIC, AND LASTLY, AGGRESSIVE MARKETING ONLY DONE IN THE LAST WEEK.

Some of you all are the most disrespectful assholes on the internet, I bet most of you have not even heard the album in its entirety. That’s what I call “bandwagon hating”. Janet is MUSIC ROYALTY. Now I can see how the teeny boppers wouldn’t understand that fact they have such bad taste in music.

I think real music with real emotions should be brought to the table. Christina has real emotions and Janet Jackson just doesn’t like she is real.

I’m not a Janet fan but I loved ‘Feedback’ so I bought the album. It’s one of the best albums I have heard in a long time, it makes you move.

@ #54 aka Nichole
You might wanna try reading #35 post again because they didn’t say that having a #1 album equaled success, they where talking about her success in general as in what she has acomplished in her career so far to date.

Yeah im also confused about IDJ upset about it. Like many of you said i only saw janet the week of release. To me its not a smart move especially if your planning a comeback to show up the week of release. You be be EVERYWHERE the whole Month, not just one week. Discipline is a solid cd, it could have been better but its solid, and if they put out the right song and VIDEOS, then it could still be a hit for her.
As for Christina, her b2b cd was actually good, well the first disc anyway. The first disc was actually full of r&b pop tracks, there wasnt a single throwback track on that cd. And as for christina jumping on the “r&b” bandwagon yo know damn well that Christina sings better than a lot of these chick in r&b nowdays, so dont be giving me that.
wake up on Janet and Christina.

I swear I hate idiots, and I hate the haters nearly as much… #1 on the Top 200, especially for an artist with a 25 year recording career is a huge accomplishment! Also, 181,000 copies is not low at all. This came out in the first quarter, not the 4th like Mary and Alicia did, plus they had waaaaaaaaaaaaaay more airplay than Janet had. I co-sign posters #49, #51, and #61. It’s crazy that anyone with intelligence would scoff at this achievement! But then maybe that’s “hitting the nail on the head,” no one with intelligence would scoff at Jan’s achievement. Also, by the way, Feedback was the seventh biggest selling digital single last week. But Janet still needs to retire, right?

YEAH, I’M STANIN FOR BADU, I’LL LET IT BE KNOWN…
I HAVE NEVER KNOWN HER TO BE SUPERFICIAL (LIGHT) W/ HER MUSIC AT ALL. EVEN WAY BACK DOWN TO BADUIZM, SHE ALWAYS HAD SOME OTHER ISH SHE WAS SINGING ABOUT, WHICH I PERSONALLY DIDN’T MIND, SHE CHALLENGES ME TO REALLY INVESTIGATE WHAT SHE’S SINGING ABOUT WHICH I THINK ADDS A VERY TIMELESS VALUE TO HER LEGACY…
AND SHE ALWAYS CHANGED THE DIRECTION OF EACH ALBUM SHE HAS PUT OUT. I’M SURE BECAUSE SHE GROWS, SHE CHANGES, MATURING. AT FIRST I WAS REAL SKETHCY WHEN I COPPED “MAMA’S GUN” BECAUSE IT WASN’T BADUIZM. I HAD TO REALLY LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE IT DIDN’T HAVE THOSE CUTS LIKE BADUIZM HAD THAT LEPT AT YOU WHEN YOU HEARD IT THE FIRST TIME.
ANYBODY WHO COPPED “N.A.” AND FEELIN IFFY ABOUT YOUR PURCHASE JUST GIVE IT SOME TIME. AND IF YOU GOTTA CRACK A BOOK OPEN TO UNDERSTAND SOME OF THE ISH SHE’S SINGING ABOUT, THEN THE WORST IS YOU LEARN SOMETHING.

It is a great Album and this is coming from a fan who didn’t like 20YO. If you don’t have the album and you are commenting–you are just silly and bored. If you like good music, like to dance, and know you’re “sexy sexy sexy” you will love this album. If you are miserable because you are unattractive, unappealing, don’t feel sexy, hate anyone who is sexy, are a loser, hate everyone who isn’t a loser, or are just plain dumb–you should just go somewhere and put yourself (and all of the rest of us) our of your misery.
Congrats to Janet on #1
Congrats to Erykah on #2
I’m happy to see two sisters who I think are talented, doing it big.
PS, Dumb people and haters are annoying as hell.

Let us all be completely honest with ourselves. If beyonce or rihanna had pulled in these numbers we would have all said they flopped. Come to think of it, rihanna’s album sold around 125000 and people saw the numbers as disappointing. But with don’t stop the music, and hate that i love you doing well on the internatonal market, the album has managed some form of longevity and has sold over 3 mill worldwide. Janet, currently, has no hit single. So it is safe to say that if luv and her third single don’t do better than feedback, the album will fall down the charts just like 20 Y.O which opened with better sales than discipline.

I disagree…if Rhianna or Beyonce or any other artist for that matter had pulled these same numbers with the same set of circumstances, then they should be congratulated. Anyone who can sell close to 200,000 in week one and get the number 1 spot, with virtually little to no airplay is doing something right. I would luuuuuvvvvv to see another artist pull this off. To date, i haven’t seen this done.

Sheesh. Lets just all put a damn smile on our faces and just be glad that Discipline is numero uno.
Now smile, peeps!
@#66. I was addressing the fact that #35 asked since when does being #1 means that album is a flop. I was just stating that an album can still hit #1 and bomb.
For the record, I bought Discipline and I can’t stand Beyonce….

Black people are sooo ignorant at times. A black artist will make music or use correct english and you will dog them out. If she was a dissrespectful hoe like some of these artist (lil mama) etc then it would br O.K. Whites will stand behind their artists till the end. Elvis and madonna have done nothing but copied from blacks and he is still making millions and they think madonna can out dance, perform, and is better than Janet.
I hope when all of you all parents are 41 years old, you don’t put them in a retirement home or just shoot them!
Excuse me, but I have to sell some drugs, see 5 of my baby momas, smoke some weed, call every black woman a bitch, go get a forty with my a$$ showing and grabbing my crouch, circle the block 27 times with music blastin, U know what I’m sayin !!!!!!!! Peace out my nigga…..
