MUSIC NEWS: JANET’S DISCIPLINE IS #1 / CHRISTINA AGUILERA’S GOES BACK TO POP

According to Hitsdailydouble.com, Janet Jackson has landed the #1 spot on next week’s Billboard charts. Interestingly enough though, it’s been said that label heads are not that happy with the 178,000 copies sold, due to the huge promotion that Def Jam pushed behind the project. Discipline landing this spot will be the first time Janet has had a #1 album since 2001’s All For You, but this is also her lowest first week sales of her career.
Despite disappointing sales, I’m glad that Janet debut at #1 and has been getting love from the fans. Music just isn’t selling the way it used to, so I’m not surprised, but I definitely did think the numbers would a be little higher for her. In any event, Erykah Badu’s new project, New Amerykah, Part One (4th World War) enter the charts at #2 with 123,000 copies sold. Get it, Erykah. I finally got a chance to listen to the album in its entirety and absolutely loved it.
I will say another thing, though. It is good to see Janet doing appearances and performances again. The video for “Rock With U” premieres tonight on BET and Janet will be appearing on SNL next week!
CHRISTINA AGUILERA’S NEXT ALBUM TO BE POP

Just after the birth of her first child, Christina Aguilera is ready to hit the studio again to work on a new studio album, a follow-up to 2006’s Back to Basics. In a recent interview with SOHH.com, producer DJ Premier revealed details on Christina Aguilera’s new project.
“I’m definitely working with her on the next album,” Premier said.
“She’s doing an all pop album again, but she wants me to keep the tone like what we did before. She’s ready to start next month… She’s so cool, she’s like my little sister now.”
I’m wondering what “pop” means for right now. Don’t get me wrong, I used to be a huge Christina fan. And even though I appreciated what she did on Back to Basics, it wasn’t my favorite album by her. As a matter of fact, I didn’t really get into all that much. It just seemed like she was trying too hard to prove something. We already know the girl has pipes, but I wish she would get back to singing, instead of screaming - which I feel like she does a lot.

Congrats to Janet on her 6th #1 album….The album is crazy. Why is there always a comparison to other artists. Janet have been doing this for 25+ years. Everyone wants to talk about album sales etc. She is sitting on top of the charts…THATS MEANS: NO ONE SOLD MORE THAN HER THIS WEEK…..people who need to retire dont top the charts. I remember when Mary J. Label heads shouldn’t have ish to say about those sales. Virgin did a better job of promoting Janet last time around. 20 y.o had 3 months of promotion and build up. This time no one even knew Janet had an album coming out 3 months ago. The album seemed rushed to me and so its not surprising this is the results its gotten so far. As for only selling 178k, the Velvet Rope only sold 200k its first week. If any one of Janet’s singles catch on, she should be fine.

The vital point being missed here, is the quality of Janet’s album….did she deliver. Yes, she did…finally and this preoccupation with number and sales is taking away from the fact that she did what she needed to do. Now, whether people go out and buy it , that’s on them. The industry and general public seems to have a hard time accepting that no ‘magic formula’ will ever produce the type of album sales we use to see back in the day. Things have drastically changed in the last few years with downloading and bootlegging….and the like. Bottom line, Discipline is a solid album, and if it was 2000 it would have went gold in the first week….but this is 2008 and you take what you can get. Janet delivered a great album, it’s fun…sexy…progressive and energetic. Sales or not….Janet still has it, and for a a forty plus year old woman…not to shabby Janet.

And how exactly do you know just how many albums were shipped by IDJ and Motown? I’m sure both companies sent out at least 200,000 units, yet niether artist reached the 200,000 mark. If Erykah was selling out stores like you claim then she would have still been #1. And Judging from internet responses a lot of folks who purchased “NEWAMERYKAH” are not pleased. The people who purchased “Discipline” seem to be satisfied. But Niether artist has a hit on the radio and in all honesty they may both fall out of the top ten next week.

Discipline would’ve sold 500k+ too if it was released christmas week. Mary J had no choice but to release her album Christmas week because nothing on it was worth listening too. If she had waited until January or February she would’ve been lucky to sell 150k. December album sales for a #1 album are more than triple what album sales in February are. Album sales in general have become seasonal.

Okay I’m getting a little tired of people either talking about Janet needing to sit her ass down because she won’t sell as many records as she used to sell in the past or saying oh we’re worried that this next album won’t sell that much instead of one acknowledging the things that this woman has accomplished and even recognizing that she has broken records that still to this day have not been surpassed.
So what is Janet may never reach the success she had in the 90s, for this woman to have been around for 30+ years (including the first two albums and the television shows) and still command as much media attention, sell out magazines (US Weekly), still have album anticipation, and still debut in the top 2, that’s saying something. I mean how many people that have been around for a while and release albums now can still command as much attention as Janet? I mean Diana Ross releases an album and sure she gets some media attention but not as much as Janet and doesn’t even sell as much but who cares right? Cause she’s still Diana Ross. Stevie Wonder comes out with “A Time 2 Love,” it doesn’t sell that much and he doesn’t get as much media attention as Janet does, but so what he’s still Stevie Wonder, and the list goes on, so why can’t the same thing be said about Janet? And sure 20 Y.O didn’t sell a lot of units but “Call On Me,” was number one on the R&B charts for a few weeks which marked her 15th number one on that chart, “So Excited,” marked her 17th number one dance hit which I believe put her right behind Madonna for female artists who had number ones on that chart.
And I’m not gonna mention her other awards that she’s gotten outside of music, but let’s not forget the Quincy Jones award she got in 2004 (during the Damita Jo era), and the fact that Damita Jo was nominated for two grammys, an AMA, a BET award, and a Soul Train award so somebody liked that album enough to nominate it.
So all those saying Janet needs to sit down you go out there and do better. Whether her first week sales were low or not a number one is a number one.

To compare Janet’s sales to Alicia’s and Mary’s is unfair;
firstly Alicia promoted the hell out of that album! weeks before it was released she was everywhere on tv, performing live. Janet wasn’t even allowed to do that until after her video was already released on tv. Same with Mary she promoted her album a lot too and thats one of the reasons it sold. “Just fine” is a fun song but it could have flopped, “No one” was an okay song but its nothing special again without promotion that could have flopped as well.
Nonetheless, I havent loved any of Janets recent songs because they’re not as good as they used to be back in the day and her old songs are CLASSICS.
Christina is a fantastic singer with a big voice but I think she is off-putting, she is dislikeable imo. She has always been a pop musician but manipulates R&B and other genres when its convinient for her to do so in increasing her sales. She still remains one of the best singers out there so I respect her for that, at least she has talent.

Congratulations to Janet and Erykah - Both sisters shining. And all of this fuss about Janet’s numbers - remember Janet set the standard. Her numbers are deep.
This first week foolishness does not measure talent or good music - it’s just a marketing scheme that have folk planning on Sunday to stand in line Tuesday when the store open to buy a CD that will still be on shelves Saturday for a lower price. The music sounds the same the second and third weeks - trust. But they want your money quick so they make it a contest.
There is no prize for getting the CD on the day it comes out - that’s about as productive as posting “first” on blogs.
The real numbers are in longevity. But this is a microwave era - get it now, get it quick.
Count it all up and the end and see who really compares.

She and Madonna are now tied at second place behind Barbara Steinsand who has 10 #1 albums. In other good news for Miss Jackson, her current single “feedback” climed 34 spots on this weeks billboard hot 100 singles charts going from 53 to 19. It is also #6 on itunes charts. Congratulations are also in order for Erykah Badu who had her highest billboard 100 debut this week coming in at #2. Congrats also go out to Usher Raymond who currently has the #1 song in the country with “love in the club”. The song skyroketed 50 places from 50 to #1.

Exactly #128. 181,000 copies sold in it’s first week for an artist like Janet is HORRIBLE. It’s only her stans who are in denial. She had absolutely no competition and her fans even bought mulitple copies just to get her to #1. If Janet had gone against the other heavy weight female singers who are dropping albums next month, she wouIdn’t have had a chance.
I just read that the album is expected to drop way below and sell between 65-70k. I’m sorry but I don’t think it’s possible for this album to have longevity, unless they do a re-release. Like I said way earlier, the general public isn’t supporting Janet. You can just tell that it’s her core audience.
Her stans will say that I’m hating but it’s far from that. I used to be a huge fan of Janet’s. She hasn’t made anything remotely great since TVR. I still have respect for her and I even purchased Discipline.

I didn’t know Janet was supposed to do anything but put out good music. Discipline is it for me. 20yo, there were some cuts on there but nowhere near the level of discipline. Anyways everyone who knows about the first quarter knows it’s slow. You still have to look at Billboard and see her in the number one spot no matter what. For all those fools who said feedback is wack and it won’t got top 20 it just landed in the #19 spot. Janet just set another record for blak females in the gmae to aspire to, 6 #1 albums or plus. When Beyonce, Rihanna, Ciara, Christina, Alicia(who I think will very soon) break that then come holler at me. #1#1#1#1#1#1#1#1#1#1#1#1#1#1#1#1#! is what the business is. So all the haters who are saying the numbers are low are the same fools who said this wouldn’t be a number one album, you’ve just changed your tune.

I’m sorry have ya’ll actually SEEN RIhanna Album sells?? Cuz ya’ll would NOT be mentioning her if ya’ll did. She sold the SAME amount as Janet her album and came out at #2 Remember T-Pain was #1.
SHe JUST went Platinum a couple of weeks ago and her album been out since June SHe is currently at 1.000 something ( US) where as Keyshia COle is almost 1.2 and Keyshia album came out in September. So DO NOT MENTION RIHANNA cuz her albums don’t sell well.

All I can say is wow. Albums are selling? Please say some albums are selling depending on how much the record company buys lol. I guess they didn’t buy much of janet’s album. Too bad it only did that cause it is a nice album and coming off of 20 Yo she did better than usual. I thought it was too little too late with the promo department. Feedback could have got a much better reception but nobody was pushing it then not even a week before her album hits stores the promo kicks in. She is lucky it sold that much cause somebody really dropped the ball on her.
Christina is a great singer but that last album was not that good to me. That style of music should be left to the people who were really there to respect it . Kinda like you had to be there moment. It just got on my last nerves. I don’t know why I can’t get into her like Pink but hey it is whatever. Good luck to her .

I’m glad Janet at least got the number 1 spot, she is a legend and it sucks that people are counting her out. I don’t think the album is strong enough to become a hit. You have Mariah and Madonna coming out soon and they are going to be coming hard. Hopefully Janet can get some radio play for her upcoming singles. They record company rushed her back into the studio and the album was complete in less then four months. She should have done at least a year of recording to stack up some hits. Look at Mariah, she has been recording for a year for this upcoming album and from what I’ve read, it will be better than the last one. Hopefully they will give her more time in the studio for the next album and give her proper promotion instead of a week before the album instead of rushing her out and just trying to make a quick buck off of her name which is what sold the 178 thousand copies.
Christina, she can sing but she has the oversinging syndrome. She thinks she is up to par with Mariah and Whitney but she has a long way to go. Her oversinging caused her to hit a big flat note at the Grammy’s when doing a tribute for James Brown. Her material has never been that great, people say it was the change of sound but look at Amy Winehouse, she has a throwback sound as welll but her songs are way hotter than any of Christina’s and her album just shot up the charts again after those Grammy wins which usually happens.

#134Christina is a better singer than Mariah is now. Um you obviously haven’t seen James Brown Sing the song he hit the same flat note. That is how he song is supposed to be sung. Chirstina has a HUGE respect for that type of music she’s been singing it since she was a little kid there are plenty of videos of her Singging Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald as a child. So no disrespect , but stop talking outta your ass.

Christina has 5 grammies vs. Britney’s 1 so who has the better music. EXACTLY. Christina IS a better singer than Mariah NOW. Christina probably knows more about that time period than YOU do. LIke Ally said you obviously have never heard James Brown sing that song live that just shows how much you know. NOTHING. Patti Labelle called Christina the BEST singer of HER generation so I would take her advice on Christina instead of yours. As far as Janet Congrats record sales aren’t much nowadays anyway ..look at RIhanna hit songs and she just now made platinum WTF. Keyshia Cole has sold more than her.

Janet fans, this is not about her 25 years in entertainment. It’s about the sales of her most recent album which I am commenting on. And based on the sales and comparing it to the sales of other female singers in the same genre, she had a bad week. That’s all. To say that the successes of Mary j’s album is due to the holiday season is unreasonable. Acts like Daughtry also released their album in December of 06 and had disappointing sales, even though they managed to stay on the charts for a long time and managed to do well.

There’s no need for Janet to make hit records anymore, she done it all! All she have to do is kick back and be blessed that she is still in the game of making music, look beautiful, continue her acting career, and live the good life! The music industry has been good to Janet, I think she just in the game to try something different, new experience, and experience what its like to work with new, talent, different producers. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis wasn’t trying anything new with Janet; so her decision to leave them was a good move. People are saying that she’s to old, I don’t hear anyone say anything about Madonna old ass! JANET STILL ROCKS!!!!!
