I bought Janet’s album and it’s HOT!!! I just don’t think it’s getting any air play!!! But I “Luv” should be her next single though.

Those aren’t the official numbers for Janet’s Discipline. iTunes and Amazon sales still have to be counted. Her sales should be higher than that once soundscan gives the official numbers. But I still find it strange that 20 Y.O. debuted at #2 with 297k sold, but with all of the promo she’s done for Discipline, the album is expected to sell under 200k. Congrats to her for having the #1 album in the country.

That’s because she was trying too hard to prove something, Brian. By the way, when did Christina ever leave “Pop” music? Her music has already been Pop, with an R&B feel to it. At least with Stripped and B2B. She’s only doing a “Pop” album because B2B fell way below the sales of Stripped, and that sound just didn’t cut it for her. Many of us still don’t have the slightest clue why she decided to make such an album anyway. Whatever.

I bought both Janet’s and Erykah’s and I want my money back from my purchase of that New Amerykah… that is some ish 10 tracks and I only like 2. its nothing like Mama’s Gun which is my favorite. The ironic thing about this is, Damita Jo (which is a great album, by the way) is her second best first week selling album after All For You (pushed 600,000) with 380,000, WHICH IS MORE THAT 1993′S JANET. ALBUM, WHICH WAS 350,000. But yet because ‘janet.’ was #1 and Damita Jo is #2, we call Damita Jo a flop, lol… I guess you can argue that ‘janet.’ had the hit singles (Thats the way love goes, If, Again, etc).

Back to Basics was a classic! That was her best work to date. I don’t think it was a matter of her “screaming”. She over sings whether she’s doing pop or soul. It’s just her style. Yeah it does sound like she’s trying to prove something, but the material on Back to Basics was superb to say the least.

I brought Erykah Badu’s album over the weekend and I must say I was not 100% pleased with the outcome as everyone else seemed to be. I just wasn’t feeling her vibe she had going on with this album but hey that’s her style and Erykah has always had her own style as well as being in her own state of mind. Don’t get me wrong though I still did enjoy listening to it but I’d say Baduizm was one of her best albums.

Telephone is my ish though, it has that classic “Baduizm” feel to it. Damn, that’s why I love that album so much.

As far as Janet is concerned, congratulations for her taking the number one spot on the charts. I’ve never been a big Janet fan (GASP!) and to be honest I’m not feeling her latest single. To me it’s like I’m just not interested in Janet anymore, she had her time to shine, now it’s time to let it go and venture toward something else. I can see if she was coming back with a bang each and every time (as in Mariah’s case in 06′), but it’s like she keeps trying and getting the same results. So I can sort of see why some people are saying she needs to go get a seat and sit the hell down some where. LOL That is my opinion, JANET STANS GET THE FUCK OFF ME!!

I’m glad to see Christina going back to her “pop roots” because I wasn’t really feeling her whole “60’s vibe” she had going on with the last album. Kudos to her!

Im so happy for Janet she deserved that #1 spot cos her album was FIYAH!!!, the numbers may have been low but so where everybody elses its just a slow period for the music industry right now and who knows things might start picking up once she releases some more songs, but she did well considering lack of radio play.

i bought both erykah and janets album’s and luv them both, my only issue with janets album is with 22 tracks on the cd it seems really short. but i’m glad she #1 181k is still good, with a lead single like feedback, i wasn’t expecting it to do like 700k like alicia and mary, a larger audience can relate more to mary and alicia’s singles, people are not always in a feedback mood, which is why she sold more back in her depressed, i’m grown now, & “(the jacksons??…never heard of them)” days. but shes changed and seems happier now so i think her career ain’t goin no where just yet.

Christina do what you do best, cos i was tired of everyone jumping on the R&B bandwagon.

Janet has absolutely nothing to be unhappy about, and everything to smile about. And shame on Def Jam for saying they are dissappointed in the sales because of all their marketing….WTF! They only started going hard marketing her 1 week before the cd was released, what the hell did they expect…most artists promote 6-8 before that. I think her numbers were damn good for one solid week of aggressive marketing and basically no radio play time. Some of my white girlfriends didn’t even know she had a cd dropping until now…that shows you they marketing effected her numbers cause the cd is solid.

But i know her sales will skyrocket once her videos drop. And please, she about to kill once she goes on tour this summer, her pockets gone be long.

Also, i’m still getting use to Erykah’s cd…i like it, but it’s still growing on me. And she did damn good for basically no marketing at all. But i have been hearing honey on the radio a good deal.

I trying to figure out this “Promotional Push” everybody keeps talking about that Janet did. Because I only saw her on a couple of shows last week. Radio don’t play her songs and MTV just put feedback into rotation last week as well. In terms of Promotion that ain’t shit! Alicia Keys, Kanye and Mary all had WAY more promo than Janet. “No one” and “Just fine” were all over the damn radio, plus Alicia and Mary released around the holiday season. Janet is still blacklisted at Clear channel radio stations (which is owned by CBS), she has no hit singles, plus people keep clowning her about her age. With all these odds stacked against her, her numbers are actually better than they should be! She’s been through a lot over the last four years and and she’s pretty much been written off. Yet the woman stays on her grind, releasing albums, performing and doing videos that rarely get played. For those reasons alone she deserved the #1 spot. Give the sistah a break!

Telephone & Me: The ONLY songs I like on Nu Amerykah, I know Badu’s deep and all, but that was ish so deep I got lost. By the song, “Twinkle” it was too weird to even try to enjoy.

The only people who are purchasing Discipline are Janet’s core audience. You can just tell from the very low first week sales. I understand that IDJ and Reid are trying their hardest to make sure that the album is a success, but what about radio? Apparently all of that promo that Janet did didn’t pay off. She did less promo with 20 Y.O. and it sold 297k in it’s first week. So the only thing that her stans can be happy about is getting her to #1. Everyone knows that the general public is not buying Discipline. I can only imagine what second week sales will look like. Then we have Mariah and Madonna releasing studio albums in April.

Her fans keep saying that Janet didn’t need radio for the album to be a hit, but we all know that they are the main one’s who supported her. And this album isn’t a hit, until it becomes a success. That’s the way I look at it. But for an album that is suppose to redeem Janet’s career, these numbers are terrible. Her fans can put a fake smile on their faces, and pretend as if everything is ok all they way.

She still has plenty of promo. There is still Oprah, Jay Leno, and David Letterman. Not to mention The View and Regis and Kelly. So much more….

Shes an amazing singer, but her music is so vapid, in general and without depth. Its just that she thinks she can be like Joni Mitchell or Karen Carpenter or Janis Joplin or someone like that, just cause of her voice, and the “indie” crowd will love her when she tries to go into other genres. Britney Spears makes more original and convincing music than Christina. Shes been makin fresh sounding pop for years. Janet, currently, has no hit single. So it is safe to say that if luv and her third single don’t do better than feedback, the album will fall down the charts just like 20 Y.O which opened with better sales than discipline.

I disagree…if Rhianna or Beyonce or any other artist for that matter had pulled these same numbers with the same set of circumstances, then they should be congratulated. Anyone who can sell close to 200,000 in week one and get the number 1 spot, with virtually little to no airplay is doing something right. I would luuuuuvvvvv to see another artist pull this off. To date, i haven’t seen this done.

Label heads shouldn’t have ish to say about those sales. Virgin did a better job of promoting Janet last time around. 20 y.o had 3 months of promotion and build up. This time no one even knew Janet had an album coming out 3 months ago. The album seemed rushed to me and so its not surprising this is the results its gotten so far. As for only selling 178k, the Velvet Rope only sold 200k its first week. If any one of Janet’s singles catch on, she should be fine.

The vital point being missed here, is the quality of Janet’s album….did she deliver. Yes, she did…finally and this preoccupation with number and sales is taking away from the fact that she did what she needed to do. Now, whether people go out and buy it , that’s on them. The industry and general public seems to have a hard time accepting that no ‘magic formula’ will ever produce the type of album sales we use to see back in the day. Things have drastically changed in the last few years with downloading and bootlegging….and the like. Bottom line, Discipline is a solid album, and if it was 2000 it would have went gold in the first week….but this is 2008 and you take what you can get. Janet delivered a great album, it’s fun…sexy…progressive and energetic. Sales or not….Janet still has it, and for a a forty plus year old woman…not to shabby Janet.

Discipline would’ve sold 500k+ too if it was released christmas week. Mary J had no choice but to release her album Christmas week because nothing on it was worth listening too. If she had waited until January or February she would’ve been lucky to sell 150k. December album sales for a #1 album are more than triple what album sales in February are. Album sales in general have become seasonal.

Okay I’m getting a little tired of people either talking about Janet needing to sit her ass down because she won’t sell as many records as she used to sell in the past or saying oh we’re worried that this next album won’t sell that much instead of one acknowledging the things that this woman has accomplished and even recognizing that she has broken records that still to this day have not been surpassed.

So what is Janet may never reach the success she had in the 90s, for this woman to have been around for 30+ years (including the first two albums and the television shows) and still command as much media attention, sell out magazines (US Weekly), still have album anticipation, and still debut in the top 2, that’s saying something. I mean how many people that have been around for a while and release albums now can still command as much attention as Janet? I mean Diana Ross releases an album and sure she gets some media attention but not as much as Janet and doesn’t even sell as much but who cares right? Cause she’s still Diana Ross. Stevie Wonder comes out with “A Time 2 Love,” it doesn’t sell that much and he doesn’t get as much media attention as Janet does, but so what he’s still Stevie Wonder, and the list goes on, so why can’t the same thing be said about Janet? And sure 20 Y.O didn’t sell a lot of units but “Call On Me,” was number one on the R&B charts for a few weeks which marked her 15th number one on that chart, “So Excited,” marked her 17th number one dance hit which I believe put her right behind Madonna for female artists who had number ones on that chart.

And I’m not gonna mention her other awards that she’s gotten outside of music, but let’s not forget the Quincy Jones award she got in 2004 (during the Damita Jo era), and the fact that Damita Jo was nominated for two grammys, an AMA, a BET award, and a Soul Train award so somebody liked that album enough to nominate it.

So all those saying Janet needs to sit down you go out there and do better. Whether her first week sales were low or not a number one is a number one.

Back To Basics was a phenomenal album. Christina is the best singer of the generation so she can do whatever she wants. She’s earned that right.

To compare Janet’s sales to Alicia’s and Mary’s is unfair;
firstly Alicia promoted the hell out of that album! weeks before it was released she was everywhere on tv, performing live. Janet wasn’t even allowed to do that until after her video was already released on tv. Same with Mary she promoted her album a lot too and thats one of the reasons it sold. “Just fine” is a fun song but it could have flopped, “No one” was an okay song but its nothing special again without promotion that could have flopped as well.

Nonetheless, I havent loved any of Janets recent songs because they’re not as good as they used to be back in the day and her old songs are CLASSICS.

Christina is a fantastic singer with a big voice but I think she is off-putting, she is dislikeable imo. She has always been a pop musician but manipulates R&B and other genres when its convinient for her to do so in increasing her sales. She still remains one of the best singers out there so I respect her for that, at least she has talent.

Congrats to Janet. Someone like Janet to have been in the business for 30+ years (unlike the Alicia’s and Beyonce’s, blacklisted by radio and MTV) and have an album debut at #1 is an accomplishment. I believe Island Def Jam are about longevity with this album.

This first week foolishness does not measure talent or good music - it’s just a marketing scheme that have folk planning on Sunday to stand in line Tuesday when the store open to buy a CD that will still be on shelves Saturday for a lower price. The music sounds the same the second and third weeks - trust. But they want your money quick so they make it a contest.

There is no prize for getting the CD on the day it comes out - that’s about as productive as posting “first” on blogs.

The real numbers are in longevity. But this is a microwave era - get it now, get it quick.

Count it all up and the end and see who really compares.

I’m feeling Erykah’s CD better. Erykah can actually, Janet just has that mediocre singing voice, and I’m not hating or anything. Im just saying what type of music interests me.. lol! I would have to give Erykah’s cd 3 out of 4 stars.

In other good news for Miss Jackson, her current single “feedback” climed 34 spots on this weeks billboard hot 100 singles charts going from 53 to 19. It is also #6 on itunes charts. Congratulations are also in order for Erykah Badu who had her highest billboard 100 debut this week coming in at #2. Congrats also go out to Usher Raymond who currently has the #1 song in the country with “love in the club”. The song skyroketed 50 places from 50 to #1.

I just read that the album is expected to drop way below and sell between 65-70k. I’m sorry but I don’t think it’s possible for this album to have longevity, unless they do a re-release. So all the haters who are saying the numbers are low are the same fools who said this wouldn’t be a number one album, you’ve just changed your tune.

I’m sorry have ya’ll actually SEEN RIhanna Album sells?? Cuz ya’ll would NOT be mentioning her if ya’ll did. She sold the SAME amount as Janet her album and came out at #2 Remember T-Pain was #1.

SHe JUST went Platinum a couple of weeks ago and her album been out since June SHe is currently at 1.000 something ( US) where as Keyshia COle is almost 1.2 and Keyshia album came out in September. So DO NOT MENTION RIHANNA cuz her albums don’t sell well.

All I can say is wow. Albums are selling? Please say some albums are selling depending on how much the record company buys lol. I guess they didn’t buy much of janet’s album. Too bad it only did that cause it is a nice album and coming off of 20 Yo she did better than usual. I thought it was too little too late with the promo department. Feedback could have got a much better reception but nobody was pushing it then not even a week before her album hits stores the promo kicks in. She is lucky it sold that much cause somebody really dropped the ball on her.

Christina is a great singer but that last album was not that good to me. That style of music should be left to the people who were really there to respect it . Kinda like you had to be there moment. It just got on my last nerves. I don’t know why I can’t get into her like Pink but hey it is whatever. Good luck to her .

I’m glad Janet at least got the number 1 spot, she is a legend and it sucks that people are counting her out. I don’t think the album is strong enough to become a hit. You have Mariah and Madonna coming out soon and they are going to be coming hard. Hopefully Janet can get some radio play for her upcoming singles. They record company rushed her back into the studio and the album was complete in less then four months. She should have done at least a year of recording to stack up some hits. Look at Mariah, she has been recording for a year for this upcoming album and from what I’ve read, it will be better than the last one. Hopefully they will give her more time in the studio for the next album and give her proper promotion instead of a week before the album instead of rushing her out and just trying to make a quick buck off of her name which is what sold the 178 thousand copies.

Christina, she can sing but she has the oversinging syndrome. She thinks she is up to par with Mariah and Whitney but she has a long way to go. Her oversinging caused her to hit a big flat note at the Grammy’s when doing a tribute for James Brown. Her material has never been that great, people say it was the change of sound but look at Amy Winehouse, she has a throwback sound as welll but her songs are way hotter than any of Christina’s and her album just shot up the charts again after those Grammy wins which usually happens.

Alicia Keys album was WACK!!! Boring, clichéd soulless mess. I couldnt stomach an entire listen, it was too dull.

I luv Erykah’s CD because it is not spoon fed. y ou really have to listen to her message and dispher I love Erykah’s CD because it is not spoon fed. You really have to listen to her message and decipher it for yourself. People are quick to write off what they don’t understand because it doesn’t come to them easily. She trying to wake people up and expand your mental thought process.

Janet fans, this is not about her 25 years in entertainment. It’s about the sales of her most recent album which I am commenting on. And based on the sales and comparing it to the sales of other female singers in the same genre, she had a bad week. That’s all. To say that the successes of Mary j’s album is due to the holiday season is unreasonable. Acts like Daughtry also released their album in December of 06 and had disappointing sales, even though they managed to stay on the charts for a long time and managed to do well.

I’m not telling her to sit her ass down or retire. No, I just think she should rethink her formula because this album sold lesser than 20 Y.O.

Janet had a ton of promotion…the week of the album’s release…if they’re unhappy with the low sales they should check their timing…its a solid album and ye ppl do still have higher numbers, but their promo is also on point…

There’s no need for Janet to make hit records anymore, she done it all! All she have to do is kick back and be blessed that she is still in the game of making music, look beautiful, continue her acting career, and live the good life! The music industry has been good to Janet, I think she just in the game to try something different, new experience, and experience what its like to work with new, talent, different producers. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis wasn’t trying anything new with Janet; so her decision to leave them was a good move. People are saying that she’s to old, I don’t hear anyone say anything about Madonna old ass! JANET STILL ROCKS!!!!!
