♫ NEW MUSIC FROM SOLANGE

SOLANGE - I DECIDED

Here is a new track from Solange’s sophomore album, Soul Angel & the Hadley Street Dreams, which is due out in August, via a joint venture with Geffen and Music World Entertainment. Solange has said that the new album is going to be a mix of ’60’s and 70’s soul with electronica. The album contains production from The Neptunes, Cee-Lo Green and Marsha Ambrosius of Floetry.

From comments that I’ve read, some people have said that Solange’s new song is similiar, musically (not vocally), to the sound of that on Amy Winehouse’s debut album, Frank. Although I understand the comparison, I don’t really agree. I will say that Solange’s new music is definitely more different than anything mainstream that’s out right now.

wow i cant wait for the haters to come on this one. I actually respect this chick cause she is doing her own thing (kelly take notes boo), shes working with a different label then her daddy and sister and working with completly different people. i actually really like this song, and her voice is rugged and raw i likes that. shes finding what works for her, when i see the people shes working with im geeked to hear this, cause this is my sound. i loves the song, i actually liked that other song she had too White Picket fences i think. go head girl!

As far as her having tons of talent…NO! But honestly, I’ve heard worse from other artists that have the same mediocre talent (Rihanna, Ashanti, Britney). I do like the song but at times she sounds like a 10 yr old trying too hard to get a note out. I wish her much success and I’m just glad that she’s stepping outta the box a lil and away from her sister’s shadow. Hopefully Bey won’t steal her shine and do a remake of it! LOL.

SHe has to be mentally challenged if she thinks this mess of a song will sell….Perhaps from a more credible artists it would be accepted and sound worth something ..she needs to do somthing like Girlfight or My Bubblegum and stay in her league…

WHo does she think is…

I like the jazzy feel, and the hook, but on the verses it sounds like she’s trying to have that jazzy grit to her voice and its just not happening, so it sounds like she’s straining to add that throatiness and she doesn’t need to. It would be nice if she just kept it simplistic w/the vocals. Her range isn’t there yet.

It’s so different for her, from her pre-pubescent Disney stuff. I think people who are tired of music that sounds the same will like what Solange is bringing. This song has to grow on me, but I really like the “rough” parts in her voice in the song - at least it’s not heavily filtered like the studio sound we’ve come to expect and call “good music”. I’ve decided…this is good music.

Solange just might gain some respect for herself with the CD, at least by those won’t get caught up in comparisons and her family relationships - I wish her the best.

36.

Someone pass me an ADVIL...

Monday, March 17, 2008 /

okay im actually impressed…when i first heard the beginning i was hating..but by the time i finished listening to it it actually works for her..i like this new sound she is going for ..she is really setting herself apart from the norm…

she is a great writer im just glad she aint goin for no pop sound like her first album..but this is actually pretty hot…..

people lets be a lil more openminded..im glad it doesnt sound like a neyo produced track ..

this song is fabulous!!! i really am digging her style. it’s something fresh and new. i might actually purchase her cd just to support a talented artist unafraid to try something different. other artists should take note

#25 DJ Mutha,

Who do you think YOU are?! Your rationale makes not one lick of sense. Perhaps it would be “accepted” if it came from a more credible artist? She should do pop and stay in her league??!! WTF?!! Solange has always been in her own league and never really been pop. Her sound was always a lil funky and diff (as well as her style) so this is nothing new for her.

39.

I like it and I look forward to hearing some more of her music. I like her Champagne song as well. The Champagne song should be the single or atleast considered as one of the first singles. I don’t think she sounds like Amy and quite honestly Im not really a Amy Winehouse fan. I can stand listening to about 2 of Amy’s songs but not the whole cd. Good luck wit everything Solange!

It’s ok I can see it growing on me, in some parts she is trying to hit notes either not in her range or she simply dosn’t know how to hit cause in some parts her voice is strained. It’s not as bad as some other stuff out and like I said in another one of her post she trying harder than Kelly so she gets points just for that.

I am SO GLAD she got a little production from Cee-Lo on this thing because she’s DEFINITELY biting his style lol Obviously, she bought “Cee-Lo Green and his Perfect Imperfections” *rollseyes* LOL@soul and electronica. Just say you’re doing what Cee-Lo did in ‘02.

Solange is as different as Paris Hilton…the day this stands up as art, Paris will be in Africa building that orphanage… Please, I can’t believe some of you are as eager to be seen as different as Solange. This sucks! Yeah…it does… And, it’s okay to say it… Nobody will accuse you of only liking BET videos… I promise.

dunno, listened over and over, but this in no means is even close to a Mark Ronson production. Its just an old style with a new singer new producer, but it doesn’t come close to the sound it is trying to emulate (it sounds generic, not “Real”, kinda thin?) her voice doesn’t have that “feel” that the older singers had. Maybe its not supposed to?, but it just doesn’t sit in the pocket right for me atleast.

Maybe it was the feel of the piano and the lead synth, even the pad/string on the chorus, they both sound cheap, and the sounds available to multi platinum producers like the GPO or Vienna Symphonic Orchesta libraries (actually most producers can afford these) - can really give the track the fullness I’ve heard on similar productions.

I see what she is trying to do, I’m sure some will like it, but personally - for this style of track I’d expect just a little bit more. Not hate, just opinion.

Okay, she is seriously all over the place. WTF! Now i was feeling the other song you guys previewed, in fact, i really really liked it….it was sort of neosoul, smooth, mellow…

Now seems she’s going in a totally different direction….what kind of music is this? Is she trying to bring the 60’s back? Whose her target audience? If she pulls this off, it will be monumental…i aint feelin this one.

56.

Monday, March 17, 2008 /

Not feeling it
The good thing is she doesnt sound anything like her sister, but she still sounds bad. Her voice isnt very good imo- it sounds strained and like shes trying to force that unique sound but its not natural to her.

She looks soo much like her dad its scary

Solange may not be a superb vocalist however, the track is reminiscent of times when music had quality and substance. I like the vocals and the lyrics and while soul and jazz are my favorite genres of music, I can see myself buying this single.

Being different is stepping outside the box. She’s done it and no denying it..I think people will give her a hard time. As a singer it’s best NOT to sound polished. It’s okay to be rough vocally…she’s not all the way there but she did make a good attempt. It’s time for the younger generation to try something new for a change. This could outlive any track these Ashanti’s, Keyshia’s, and any other female out could do. Folks will be scared of change…but embrace it….Solange is.

After another listen, I have to comment again because the lyrics said “I didn’t do what the fast girls do”…….YES YOU Diiiiiiiiid………where I come from, fast girls have babies at 17. I just don’t think you should sing it if it’s not true. The songs should represent the artist.

63.

Monday, March 17, 2008 /

She’s alright, but not great. And Amy Winehouse she’s not. Solonge should think about working on her vocal strength though. I’ll give her credit for trying something different, and not trying to sound like that overrated sister of hers.

64.

I like the footstomp/handclap effect borrowed from The Supremes’ “Where Did Our Love Go”, accompanied by tight female background vocals reminiscent of Natalie Cole’s “This Will Be”. Definitely a homage, while still being original by today’s standards.

I expected to be a little embarrassed for her before I downloaded this, but aside from her voice straining in some areas, this is a hot joint. It actually sounds like SOUL music, and not the same derivative sounding, cookie cutter ish that passes for R&B nowadays.

Solange gets major props for following up on the formula Kelly R fulfilled on her first solo album. Perhaps, Kelly should have stayed out of the box on her sophomore cd.

Let’s hope the Solange fulfills on her next cd.

I’M FEELING THIS.. IT’S DIFFERENT AND A VERY OLD SCHOOL THROWBACK FEEL.

AND SHE CAN SING BETTER THAN 90% OTHER CHICKS OUT HERE, SO THOSE CALLING HER A “NO TALENT” NEED TO STFU…

BUT SHE NEEDS THE HATERS… IF THEY ONLY KNEW HOW MUCH THEIR HATE CREATED THE BIGGEST STARS!!!! STAY ON YOUR JOBS FOLKS!!!

THIS IS A GOOD LOOK FOR SOLANGE.

And I’m sorry to have to inform some of you, but Amy Winehouse is overrated.

Ugly sounding pseudo-soul whining at best.

Or, if Stevie Nicks woke up one day and decided she wanted to be black, at worst.

I think people calling her talentless obviously are ignorant about the work solange has done. She might not be the greatest vocalist but alot of beyonces hits such as get me bodied, solange co-wrote. Solange is an excellent writer. Just because you dont like her new current sound switch doesnt mean shes not talented. Saying shes on the level of cassie is def. not giving her the credit she deserves. She is the talent, shes not the one just surrounded by talented people like Cassie who was geared by Ryan Leslie who wrote, produced all of her material. Solange definitely puts her creative work in and is the engine to her own ship.

I like it it’s different. She isn’t the best vocalist but being successful in this industry is not about sounding like an angel. Its catchy and fun it may not have her as successful in the booty shaking arena but look what that type of music has done for the perception of us as a people. Nice job

I really love the idea. I do think that she probably should’ve had Beyonce’ do her vocal production because it was a little empty until the end. And the production just sounded empty also. Like, every instrument sounded separate. Nothing blended well. I dunno. Maybe, because there was no bass line. So I love the idea, I just think that it should all be interpreted a little better. She should’ve let me produce it. lol
