♫ NEW MUSIC FROM SOLANGE
Monday, March 17, 2008
Here is a new track from Solange’s sophomore album, Soul Angel & the Hadley Street Dreams, which is due out in August, via a joint venture with Geffen and Music World Entertainment. Solange has said that the new album is going to be a mix of ’60’s and 70’s soul with electronica. The album contains production from The Neptunes, Cee-Lo Green and Marsha Ambrosius of Floetry.
From comments that I’ve read, some people have said that Solange’s new song is similiar, musically (not vocally), to the sound of that on Amy Winehouse’s debut album, Frank. Although I understand the comparison, I don’t really agree. I will say that Solange’s new music is definitely more different than anything mainstream that’s out right now.
Make sure you log onto Solange’s offcial MySpace page to check out more music from Solange. And check back on CL for more news on her release.

I actually respect this chick cause she is doing her own thing (kelly take notes boo), shes working with a different label then her daddy and sister and working with completly different people. i actually really like this song, and her voice is rugged and raw i likes that. shes finding what works for her, when i see the people shes working with im geeked to hear this, cause this is my sound. i loves the song, i actually liked that other song she had too White Picket fences i think. go head girl!

As far as her having tons of talent…NO! But honestly, I’ve heard worse from other artists that have the same mediocre talent (Rihanna, Ashanti, Britney). I do like the song but at times she sounds like a 10 yr old trying too hard to get a note out. I wish her much success and I’m just glad that she’s stepping outta the box a lil and away from her sister’s shadow. Hopefully Bey won’t steal her shine and do a remake of it! LOL.

I like the jazzy feel, and the hook, but on the verses it sounds like she’s trying to have that jazzy grit to her voice and its just not happening, so it sounds like she’s straining to add that throatiness and she doesn’t need to. It would be nice if she just kept it simplistic w/the vocals. Her range isn’t there yet.

It’s so different for her, from her pre-pubescent Disney stuff. I think people who are tired of music that sounds the same will like what Solange is bringing. This song has to grow on me, but I really like the “rough” parts in her voice in the song - at least it’s not heavily filtered like the studio sound we’ve come to expect and call “good music”. I’ve decided…this is good music.
Solange just might gain some respect for herself with the CD, at least by those won’t get caught up in comparisons and her family relationships - I wish her the best.

#25 DJ Mutha,
Who do you think YOU are?! Your rationale makes not one lick of sense. Perhaps it would be “accepted” if it came from a more credible artist? She should do pop and stay in her league??!! WTF?!! Solange has always been in her own league and never really been pop. Her sound was always a lil funky and diff (as well as her style) so this is nothing new for her.

I like it and I look forward to hearing some more of her music. I like her Champagne song as well. The Champagne song should be the single or atleast considered as one of the first singles. I don’t think she sounds like Amy and quite honestly Im not really a Amy Winehouse fan. I can stand listening to about 2 of Amy’s songs but not the whole cd. Good luck wit everything Solange!

dunno, listened over and over, but this in no means is even close to a Mark Ronson production. Its just an old style with a new singer new producer, but it doesn’t come close to the sound it is trying to emulate (it sounds generic, not “Real”, kinda thin?) her voice doesn’t have that “feel” that the older singers had. Maybe its not supposed to?, but it just doesn’t sit in the pocket right for me atleast.
Maybe it was the feel of the piano and the lead synth, even the pad/string on the chorus, they both sound cheap, and the sounds available to multi platinum producers like the GPO or Vienna Symphonic Orchesta libraries (actually most producers can afford these) - can really give the track the fullness I’ve heard on similar productions.
I see what she is trying to do, I’m sure some will like it, but personally - for this style of track I’d expect just a little bit more. Not hate, just opinion.

Being different is stepping outside the box. She’s done it and no denying it..I think people will give her a hard time. As a singer it’s best NOT to sound polished. It’s okay to be rough vocally…she’s not all the way there but she did make a good attempt. It’s time for the younger generation to try something new for a change. This could outlive any track these Ashanti’s, Keyshia’s, and any other female out could do. Folks will be scared of change…but embrace it….Solange is.

I like the footstomp/handclap effect borrowed from The Supremes’ “Where Did Our Love Go”, accompanied by tight female background vocals reminiscent of Natalie Cole’s “This Will Be”. Definitely a homage, while still being original by today’s standards.
I expected to be a little embarrassed for her before I downloaded this, but aside from her voice straining in some areas, this is a hot joint. It actually sounds like SOUL music, and not the same derivative sounding, cookie cutter ish that passes for R&B nowadays.
Solange gets major props for following up on the formula Kelly R fulfilled on her first solo album. Perhaps, Kelly should have stayed out of the box on her sophomore cd.
Let’s hope the Solange fulfills on her next cd.

I think people calling her talentless obviously are ignorant about the work solange has done. She might not be the greatest vocalist but alot of beyonces hits such as get me bodied, solange co-wrote. Solange is an excellent writer. Just because you dont like her new current sound switch doesnt mean shes not talented. Saying shes on the level of cassie is def. not giving her the credit she deserves. She is the talent, shes not the one just surrounded by talented people like Cassie who was geared by Ryan Leslie who wrote, produced all of her material. Solange definitely puts her creative work in and is the engine to her own ship.

I really love the idea. I do think that she probably should’ve had Beyonce’ do her vocal production because it was a little empty until the end. And the production just sounded empty also. Like, every instrument sounded separate. Nothing blended well. I dunno. Maybe, because there was no bass line. So I love the idea, I just think that it should all be interpreted a little better. She should’ve let me produce it. lol

Sorry, but I have to disagree… Amy, unlike MANY of today’s stars, STUDIED her chosen genre FOR YEARS. Many of these singers were put together by handlers…in formulaic fashion, one potential musician’s looks might have meant that pop music, with the endless opportunities to be SEEN in the mainstream via videos and video music shows, was for her. Or another, because she is naturally pretty but not at all suited for dance, would fare better in rock. And, another, because her natural voice is gritty and features out of kilter, is just the girl for coffeehouse. And still another, because her sister is an UBERstar whose such a constant presence that her voice is one of the most identifiable in the world, decides that neo-soul, a genre where most artists remain underground and unknown or even bitter because they’re so overlooked that even the idea of an industry labeling them “neo soul” artists causes their blood to boil, is the avenue for her. Amy’s tiptop. Solange is as fake as her sister’s announcement that she’ll be donating a portion of what she earns from playing drug addled Etta James to anti drug charities. SMH

# 38 ( cococola72284 My apologies…perhaps I worded it wrong and I regret that
However…What i mean is that perhaps the song could have been executed better with someone with the necessary vocal capability to pull it off…Solange is far from being a song stylist or multi octave vocalist, this is not opinion but fact..She is no Ledisi and the song in the hands of another singer may have come out better…
as far as her league is concern…I have her first cd and the feel and vibe of it was perfect for what little vocal range she has….
and as far as Who do i think I am - Who I am is a music consumer, local Deejay and independent music critic ..but most importantly I am someone who is entitled to my opinion….HAVE A WONDERFUL AFTERNOON…

Ashley or “Ashlee” actually caught a break…she’s sold far more records than Jessica and WAS a much more respectable artist, even after the SNL tragedy BUT her latest effort, which saw her mimicking Gwen Stefani both in sound, look, and dress is where she lost many fans. It was produced by Timbaland and already suspect as people hated that she seemed to be jumping on the Timbaland bandwagon BUT when everyone saw the video and heard her excusing the Stefani influence by claiming she’d gone to some art exhibition that had inspired the video…well, they weren’t buying it… I’ve had 5 ginger snaps, can you tell? lol I am wired up like a child!

My comments about Amy stand. I do not care for her sound. I don’t find any beauty in it whatsoever. No matter HOW much she’s “studied” the form. And perhaps that’s what’s troubling about your missive: Studying vs. having a natural affinity for an art form, ESPECIALLY black music is a touchy thing for me. There are some white singers I feel have a natural affinity for black music (Teena Marie, Hall & Oates, Boz Scaggs and even George Michael to some degree), to me these artists sounded and felt a little more authentic in their day, meaning they were played on black radio, and nobody knew they were white (well, maybe George, but he still sounds more blacker than Timberfake), but Amy leaves me cold. And I still fell that she’s overrated and pushed down our throats by the white music media while BETTER artists are performing the same type of music to less acclaim, like Brooklyn’s Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings.
I do, however agree with your comments about packaged pre-fab artists. That’s the nature of the biz. And I sympathize with the plight of all those so-called neo-soul artists who do not get play:
Dwele
Bilal
Eric Roberson
Sara Divine
Conya Doss
Seek
Zap Mama
Ledisi (This is changing, though)
Vivian Green
Vikter Duplaix
just to name a few……………………..
At no time did or would I compare Solange to Amy Winehouse. My comments about both were separate. And the music business alone is based on fake attitudes and disingenuous charity pledges, so I hardly blame the Knowles alone in this regard - look at MJ! But I digress. I think that Solange, based on this single alone has brought forth a fresh sounding, soulful single. Most people might not feel because it’s a shock to their system form listening to 10-song tripe that is the Power__ (add #) stations. Or maybe they just don’t feel it, period. That’s just their opinion, too.

The song concept is nice, the music is kinda of wacked- some parts sound like a cheap casio kid toy, and Solange’s voice is so NOT for this material. In essence- it’s garbage. Solange should do dance songs like Rihanna, so that there will be hot beats and other accents to distract from her weak voice- like they did for Rihanna with “play the music” or whatever the name of that song is. She’s probably good at writing songs, dancing and even coming up with beats….but singing is not what she’s good at right now. Maybe with more practice and a voice coach, she’ll turn out to be a great singer- but for now- she should stick to writing.

This song is fun and bouncy..and I’m glad Solange is going in this direction instead of the way of “Freakum Dress”. Hadley Street Dreams is definitely something I’m anticipating. I have a feeling it’s gonna be hot!

This doesn’t sound like “Frank.” Maybe people were referring to “Back to Black.” But, even with that, the only comparison would be the 60s/Supremes sound.
The song, itself, is very cutesy, and Amy isn’t cutesy.
Either way, it’s good to hear Solange doing something different from what’s out right now. Really, she would’ve needed to.
I mean, she already has like 50 strikes against her, because of who she’s related to, her private life, and her flop last album.

@MISSISSIPPI G_DDAMN but isn’t practically every mainstream artist overrated? i mean seriously, justin timberlake, chris brown, beyonce, rihanna, etc. most of them don’t deserve all of the praise they get. anyway i do think amy is a very good songwriter. her flaw is her addiction which makes her sound bad at practically every live performance

For those of you discredit Rhianna for her one Grammy that she received with Jay-Z
FYI- Solo n 3 W Destiny’s Child
Beyonce 2005
The Closer I Get to You Duet with the Late Great Luther Vandross - Duo or Group
Crazy in Love- Best Song
Crazy In Love- Best Rap Song Collaboration w Jay Z
DIL- Best Female Performance
DIL- Best RnB album
2007
Best Contemporary Album B’Day
Best Rap/Sung Collaboration W Jay-Z
What’s the difference between B’s awards with JayZ and Rhianna’s SONG with Jay-z?
I mean either way it goes Rhianna still has a Grammy and people still hate her for that. FYI– If you don’t know people voted for her so there is some people out there who like her music.

Come on! I can not stand for someone to use a mimicker of Black Music as a reference point for a Black Artist. This song sounds nothing like Amy Whinehouse for those who said that. And if it did sound Jazzy, Why not say it sounded like Chrisette Michele, she sings better than Amy Whinehouse, however Amy’s Production is more geared for the genre in which she is singing. Chrisettes album was too Churchy/hip hoppy, and Amy’s Back to Black joint was more Doo Wop/Early Rock and Roll or Rockabilly. But this song just songs like a blend of classical (Chords Played m9, Minor and major 7s) meets classic Rhythm and Blues not to be misconstrued with what is R&B today. I am talking about the early Rhythm and Blues that our parents listened to. But anyway, for those that made a comparison, listen to music more and listen without making a judgment there is more freedom in doing so, if you would like to discuss this further with me, please email me or hit me up on Myspace:

#159 you are a dumb ass who obviously cant read. The difference is Beyonce has won several grammy’s for vocal performance, albums, etc both solo and with DC. Rihanna only won 1 and it was in a RAP category for a collaboration and she was nominated 6 times. Beyonce won 5 her first trip to the grammy’s as a solo artist and Rihanna only won 1 and it was thanks to Jay and the rap category. She DID NOT win for anything she did solo like album, vocal performance, etc because they know she can’t sing. So please that is the difference and it’s a huge one.

Truth be told this is not that bad of a song. It’s actually kind of good. You can’t let the hate for her cloud good judgment however you can let it stop you from buying her album or requesting her song on the radio. She’s got the music quality up now she needs to worry about that likability factor and frankly her myspace diatribes are counterproductive if not down right dumb. You don’t get fans by telling people how much better you are than them just because your sister has a career.
Anyway she’s def more talented than Rihanna, but Rihanna has a likeable superstar quality. I would put Solange below Ashanti but Solanges bankroll on this project seems to be only something Ashanti can dream about (having already worked with Pharrell who charges a first born child… bye bye Daniel) So I guess this may not be all bad but it won’t go anywhere unless she deals with the fact that everyone hates her. She’s def trying to go alternative R n b but that’s so phony when the sound is so clearly produced to make you seem far more alternative than you are.

Solange is very underrated. It’s sad when sisters of celebrities can’t get out of their sibling’s shadow…Tamar Braxton being a really good example of that. Solange has always had a very different style from Beyonce. She was more earthy and hippy chick when she was younger, so I’m not surprised in the direction she’s trying to go. I like the song and I think it’s a good style for her. Not everybody has to stick to the formula…it’s nice when someone takes us back to when music was simple with tight harmonies and some soul, not 808’s and synthesizers.

This 60’s or Motown sound is catchy and becomming somewhat maintream. But I can appreciate the new sound. What I do not like, is the cheap beat in the background sounding like a sound effects of a horse riding on concrete in the background.
Marsha is doing background? SMDH. Marsha from Floetry makes the song and is lyrically on point with her vocals. I understand Solange is supposse to have the grittiness . Solange sounds nasal. Even in th begining of the song she sounds like a kid telling them to turn it up. Her voice is not even raspy enough to sound like she can sing. She really needs to stick with writing and producing. I am somehat tired of the Knowles family. The are straight up opportunist. They will suck ANY opportunity dry! I am not trying to knock there hustle but just can they do something and dip out and comeback later? No they keep comming back for more and more till we get so sick of them… I mean really….

I guess you could say it’s all relative. I was just making a point about this particular case. And I think I did make a sort of side reference to the state of overrated artists being pushed down our throats when I mentioned the state of the so-called “Power” stations and my list of artists who don’t get played on the top black radio formats.

This song is on repeat and I actually don’t mind it. Her sound has definitely evolved. And if anyone doesn’t know she is releasing this music just to release it and develop
a name, from what I heard in an interview she said she’s not looking for any big breaks or fame (like her sis) she really song writes a lot. And I think she might become a really good songwriter/producer. I love it, I hope she’s happy in the place she has chosen especially with all this media scrutiny and hateratin’. She not Beyoncé, she’s Solange.

It’s so sad… I love everyone at this camp. Beyonce, Solange, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams. They’ve all had successful careers (one MUCH MORE than the others) and I’m so happy for all of them. One thing I’m sad about though is that Kelly Rowland, Michelle Williams and anyone else at this label ceases to shine…
Beyonce had the B’Day album ride out for about 1 year to 1 1/2 years. She won grammys and had several singles chart and SOLD MILLIONS OF CDS! I was so happy because I love to see Beyonce doing well because she’s the QUEEN OF R&B.
But… as for KELLY… she had one single (”Like This”) hit the top ten on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart and then everything went down hill from there… She had four videos (two that the US didnt even see!) and her CD FLOPPED BIG TIME! She only sold 86,000 copies in the first week and then fell off the Top 100 album chart. Her other single(s) ALL FAILED TO CHART! She’s only had success in the UK and I guess she’s doing her thing there… Kelly says that she’s doing her 3rd album and she says it’ll drop EARLY 2009… We’ll see about that b/c IT TOOK MS. KELLY FIVE WHOLE YEARS TO DROP AFTER SHE DID THE FIRST ONE SO I’M BETTING THAT MAYBE 2012-2013 IS WHEN THE CD WILL DROP…
Michelle Williams - I know she wanted her gospel albums to be quiet releases but now she’s created a whole new SEXIER image and she made a great video for “WBTD” and she still hasn’t seen the light of day.. There’s LITTLE TO NO PROMO FOR HER WHATSOEVER. She’s only made appearances on the red carpets of various events!!! She hasn’t even performed it yet!!!She ain’t even been on 106 and Park or TRL to debut her video that dropped two or three weeks ago!!!! Why is that???!!!
Solange - everyone knows tha first album flopped but now she’s back with her HOT first single “I Decided” and the video just dropped and she’s on tour already. Mathew Knowles has already said that she has a second single (”Sandcastle Disco”) and that the video will be shot in a month… Everything seems so concrete and laid out for her but what about the others??? I’m happy for the daughters of Mr. Knowles but someone has to see what I see as well…
I don’t know if Kelly or Michelle will EVER HAVE hugely successful careers because of how their albums have been handled. At the end of the day, Beyonce and Solange are his daughters and I feel like he pays more attention to them and kinda brushes Michelle, Kelly and all the other no-name acts on the label to the side.
What do you think?????????
