The Economic Policy Institute reports that blacks’ incomes, compared to their white counterparts, have dropped during the past eight years, particularly for black union workers.
In 1995, the average black family earned 60.9 percent of the average white family, but by 2000, the percentage reached a record high of 63.5 percent. By 2005, however, it had dropped to 60.2 percent.
A recent study reports that 55 percent of union jobs lost in 2004 were those of black workers. Black women comprised seventy percent of the union jobs lost by women.
The 2001 recession and weak recovery hurt the poorest blacks the most. In 1995, the poorest fifth of black families on average earned only 43 percent of what the poorest fifth of white families earned. The percentage increased to 49.9 percent in 2000, but by 2005, it had fallen back to 43 percent.
William Lucy, president of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists, said at the organization’s convention that improving the situation for black workers requires a change in economic policies:
“We must not only challenge policies that hurt workers, we also have a responsibility to break out of the box of status quo economics that traps workers in a cycle of playing catch-up, but never rising above a certain standard of living.”
The nation should adopt four core principles regarding work, he said.
1. Anyone who wants to work should have a job.
2. Anyone who does work should be able to live in dignity with health care and retirement security for their family.
3. Every worker should have the opportunity to form a union and bargain collectively.
4. All workers should share equitably in the prosperity of a strong American economy.

White officers today who entered before that year are earning hundreds more every month in retirement benefits than black officers.
Black officers like James Booker, who served 32 years with the police department in College Park, a suburb of Atlanta, work part-time to make ends meet and have been lobbying to amend the state constitution which prohibits the state from extending new benefits to public employees after they’ve retired.
Rep. Tyrone Brooks, an Atlanta Democrat and civil rights activist leading the officers’ campaign, said if lawmakers don’t take action in the final weeks of the legislative session, the battle will move to the courts.
“I was hoping we wouldn’t have to go this route, but litigation appears to be our only option,” Brooks said.
According to Ronald Hampton, executive director of the National Black Police Association, “Only Georgia is shameless enough to still have this out there.”
An amendment resolution has been passed twice in the House, but has gone nowhere in the state Senate.
Chairman of the Senate Retirement Committee Bill Heath, a Republican, argued that making retroactive changes to retirement benefits “opens a can of worms and could destroy the pension system. We can’t fix everything for everybody.”
The state’s first black officers, hired in the late 1940s, entered a segregated system filled with daily humiliations: they couldn’t arrest white offenders without a white officer present; they couldn’t change into uniforms at the station house or even wear their uniforms to work. Some white officers ordered to partner with a black officer called in sick until they were reassigned.
Former Atlanta Patrolman Johnnie P. Jones, the only surviving member of the original class of eight black officers hired in Atlanta in 1948, said “It was pure hell. The enemy was the white police officers and the enemy was the black citizens. We were under siege.”

Time is running out as some retirees have died and others are ailing; Brooks asked, “You wonder sometimes are they just waiting for us to all die?”

Billions of dollars wasted on a war and people who worked hard everyday can’t paid right.
Does anyone else have a problem with police officers, fire fighters, and emergency workers getting peanuts for pay, i mean, literally just above the poverty line, and yet celebrities are paid ridiculous sums of money for basically skipping and hopping their ass across the stage, memorizing lines, etc. And they are praised and rewarded to the 10th power, yet police officers, who have to work at least 1 additional job in order to make ends meet barely get recognition, yet, these are the people who literally, and i mean literally, risks their lives and die in the line of duty everyday! The world is backwards….every police officer i know have to work at least 2 jobs in order to live….absurd! So i understand why the officers in Georgia are all trying to get into the supplemental police retirement fund because as it stands, the basic police retirements funds wouldn’t suffice and won’t carry them through retirement, and here these idiots are trying to bar people from receiving it….
Oh, and also included in this lunacy, is the UNGODLY amounts of money athletes are paid to play a fuckin game, compared to police officers and/or fire fighters who will never in their entire lifetime, even if they worked 5 jobs in their lifetime, will never net what these atheletes make in one year….when you think about it, the world really is backwards.

We are living a a world where the “love of the greater number will fall off”, “man will be lovers of themselves” and greed. The world have been like this for quite sometime. It more to life then just getting a good job, the morale of this world have hit rock-bottom. From the beginning we have been told to look thoroughly after ourselves by mean of finances and most of us haven’t. We have not been educated enough as to how these really work in the States. That’s what needed to be done and we haven’t really did that. It doesn’t make any since to leave your family every single day to work for 30, 40 maybe 50 years and have absolutely no proper finances for your family. This world just want to use you and when they are done they won’t throw you a bone. Look at how they have treated the men whom have fought in wars.(Iraq) NOTHING! The reason why civil workers make peanuts compared to celebrities is because of the American capitalist system which basically pays you based on how much you’re worth to the corporate entities. How much someone is worth is based on how exclusive their talents are and how much money they can make for the corporations that make America go. Simple as that. Notice that when you see these Forbes lists of the richest whatever, they usually tell you how much they’re worth, not how much they have, especially when it involves blacks. That’s because if that negro doesn’t follow orders, no matter how many billions they may have, the white man can concoct a way to send that negro back to the damn projects.We can all wax poetic about how much a teacher or police officer should make but it must be understood that there are hundreds of thousands of teachers and police officers in America. Black people need to lose the idealistic mindframe of how things “should be” and except how things are so that we can react accordingly. Anything but accept the fact that this society and system were crafted on race and race is what perpetuates it. Black people don’t understand their history; so due to civil rights movement mind control indoctrination our people can’t understand that the caucasians came to power due to our fall so the black element in America will always be a powder keg that must be handled with care by whites. That means that the subjugation cannot be so overt; akin to purposefully misleading a blind person. Enough of a front has to be maintained by the people in power that the majority of black people don’t become suspicious enough to even ponder any sort of upheaval. It’s starts with the institutionalized adoration of the caucasian male and female from childhood through mass media, develops through simple-minded parents and inadequate schooling, oppressive community environments, and culminates in unfair hiring and firing practices. It always entertains me when people (both black and white) put forth this notion that black people should “excel” just to get a fair chance. That’s a subliminal way of saying that they cannot get a fair chance. I must add that there are so many factors that contribute to the impoverishment of blacks in both America and the UK. At the end of the day its really really important to have a great education and I’m not talking high school, get a degree if you can from a highly reputable University-if you have the grades. Don’t follow the crowd, these are all things that young black people need to be told. Also adults need to understand the importance of investment, which is the single most thing that is bringing blacks down especially middle class blacks. No matter how much you earn, if you dont have wealth to back it up then it becomes pointless.

I already knew that, and you totally missed my point. My point was not how and where the revenue comes from, but that it was determined by the “powers that be” that police officers and fire fighters should be paid peanuts. That’s the point. They have determined that this is what they should be paid. Judges are also civil servants, and yet, they were determined to be more significant than the people on the front line by what they are willing to pay them. The problem is that somehow, how society has put a worth on each occupation, and determined that police officers, fire fighters, emergency workers, one of our most valued pennacles of society, isn’t worth much. I have a huge problem with that. I know they are paid via our tax dollars, hello, learned that in first grade, however, the government DECIDES how that money will be spent, and where it will go. Somebody sat down and said, okay, we are willing to pay our police officers this much, and we are willing to pay our judges this much. Private officers in private communities are often paid much more because they have determined that their officers are extremely valuable to their well-being and quality of life, and are therefore willing to pay for this security. So of course, the people in the community are willing to pay this price, but bottom line is, they show they value these officers. We all pay taxes, however, who the fuck detemined officers should get peanuts? I don’t think our tax money is allocated correctedly to say the least, however, i think the deeper issues are the way we view people in our society, and the problem is that little value is placed on the people who protect and keep us safe; the same goes for how we treat our soldiers, but i could go on forever, so let me stop here.
How do you put your life on the line for people you don’t know and don’t get the money you deserve? Why are white union workers entitled to more benefits and money than African Americans? I watch shows like Lou Dobbs and Glen Beck and they swear African Americans get the same equal rights as white.

What I said had little to do with how and where revenue comes from. I was addressing the notion that civil servants “should” be paid like athletes and entertainers in a capitalist economy which will not happen. I deal with reality, not fantasy. If you tried to come at the lawmakers with this Disneyland mentality of how things “should be” they’ll give you a laundry list of expenditures, whether real or contrived, that will make your head spin. Running cities, states, and countries is not like balancing a checkbook and people are paid the minimum of their economical scale worth in any economy, even athletes and entertainers. For every dollar that Jay-Z generates, he is paid a fraction of that. If it was determined by the powers that be that police officers and fire fighters should be paid peanuts, that’s because their ability to generate money is viewed as minimal to moderate. The comparison between a judge and a police officer is not a good one because a judge must endure an elongated educational curriculum to be verified as a judge. Besides that, judges have a far greater affect on a far higher level in how this society is maintained than some cop does.
Most police officers are idiots. This explains the difference in pay scale. Due to the judge’s “education”, his worth is greater, therefore his pay is greater. Police officers and soldiers in America are viewed as expendable commodities so why would they be paid like necessities? The police officer has always been of the lower dregs of society, starting from slavery where the police departments basically evolved from the slave catchers. This is why the slaves would mock them as “white trash” which is where the term came from. These were whites that were too poor to receive a real “education” or own their own slaves so they took up the occupation of slave-catching to express their rage. The police departments, the Klan, and all these up and coming white supremacist groups are offshoots of the white trash, not the elite white slave-owners. The elite slave-owners went on to convert their earnings into the start of these Fortune 500 companies. I’ve never believed that police were heroes and never will. Most of them are nothing but crooks and murderers with a license to steal and murder and they will lie and connive reflexively. The blacks that join the police force must take on the same oppressive mentality of the whites on the police force to prove to those whites that they can be depended on. They get a kick out of being on master’s side and “above the law” to a degree. The private police forces of elite white communities are paid so well because they are supposed to keep out undesirable elements of society, i.e. blacks and hispanics, not catch and abuse the ones that are already there like city police.
The Fire Department as well, especially in New York, is renowned for it’s rampant racism. Most of the Fire Departments were 98% caucasian, usually Irish and Italian (once again that white trash element), until the issue was brought to the forefront a couple of years ago and the hiring practices were re-evaluated. I’m not even going to go into the purposeful arson committed in black communities by the Fire Department for the purposes of gentrification.
Is it me or does that lady out front not resemble Whoopi Golberg? LOL.
It hurts me so much to read about these things still going on. But that just proves that Everyday WE STILL NEED TO BE FIGHTING FOR Equality.
Don’t just settle for less my brothers and sisters. And don’t just think of yourselves. Injustice AFFECTS ALL OF US… and we need to do SOMETHING about this.
