On Thursday, April 3, at 9 p.m. ET the first installment of CNN’s groundbreaking documentary series Black in America will premiere with “Eyewitness to Murder: The King Assassination“.

April 4 marks the 40th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination. Shout out to CL Reader Ashley for the info.

VIOLENCE AT BLACK FUNERAL PARLORS

A recent Wall Street Journal article reports that a spike in black murders and violence at funerals have forced black morticians to change the way they operate.

According to the article, one mortician has a surveillance camera in the chapel of his funeral home, another sometimes carries a gun in his hearse and one is considering leaving the business.

“Funeral homes used to be the most respected places you could walk into beside the church,” says Jeff Gardner, a co-owner of A.D. Porter & Sons in Louisville, Ky., and a third-generation undertaker. “Nobody respects life and the young folks nowadays don’t mind dying.”

Last year, the National Funeral Directors & Morticians Association, the world’s largest and oldest national association of black funeral directors, morticians and embalmers, recommended increasing security and not publicizing funerals to curb the violence on funeral premises. According to the organization, the average cost of a black funeral is about $4,500, but in some cases, security measures are driving up the cost.

Much of the violence is at funerals for gang members - opposing gangs know and expect that there will be a big turnout, so they go and shoot ‘em up.

There is no respect for the living - let alone respect for the dead.

This is so sad to hear. OMG. I really wish our generation would recognize the sacrifices that the generations before us made in order for us to have to rights and the freedom to be BETTER! We have to do better.

Hmph, homicide way up amongst the negros ha..tell us something we don’t already know Wall Street Journal. Target the black audience with something more positive..we all don’t live under the gun like that, damn.

I feel that the reason why so many of our young brothas don’t mind dying,is because no one has shown them a reason to live.If one looks really hard at what these young brothas see on a daily basis,it will be easy to see why they do the things that they do.I’am a 70’s child, and I had rules, rules, and more rules.I have a father that will at this very moment, tell me things that will help me formulate the right path to take when I’am in doubt. There were a lot of men like him in my days coming up as a young man,so even if you didn’t have a father at home, you had a father figure somewhere in your neighborhood.Today is so very different, the world moves faster today, and what these young brothas see at age 11,12 and 13,we didn’t see until we were damn near grown. All these young brothas today want respect, or a false sense of respect from their peers,I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard some young brotha say,I will eff that n-word up if he even looks at me the wrong way! These young brothas weren’t born with violence in their hearts, someone fed them negativity. If you show these young brothas something based on positivity, most of them will turn around, will it be an easy thing to do,absolutely not.It will be very hard to sway a young brotha who is making a living off the streets to go back to school, when he is 16,17,18 and two grades behind, for fearing what his friends may think of him,so these young brothas take on a Suge Knight type of personality to compensate for their lack of education,to bring a sense of worth to their lives. But what a lot of these young brothas don’t know is that Suge Knight graduated from Arizona State university.

We have not grown as much as we should. It only been forty years. Most of our ancestors died as slaves and the rest spent more than 40 years hoping for freedom. Here we are 2008, and our race have dramatically deterioated. At one point it was suppose to have been the white race but now it seems to have flipped. There are so many issues to take into considerations as a factor to this. It doesn’t matter what another race is doing, if we are repeating the hatred towards one another we will never be respected as a whole. This is very sad. I remember when I was in Sociology class and the subject of African Americans came up. I almost cried. Once I really realize that we only have been free for a fraction of the time our ancestors have lived here, reality hit. Where are we now? No love, no respect, lack of responsibilty, laziness, hatred, ets. Yes it is what is going on in this world as a whole but it is primarily within our race. Look at the statistics, look around you, look at your neighborhood. We have failed as a whole, while other races are holding on to theirs. I love my blackness and would not want to be anthing else but successful. But sometimes I am ashame of us and wished things was a lot different.

Good points Jones and Supercent. Its sad….I’m so dissapointed. I don’t understand why people would want to shoot up a funeral of another slain man. Its true..these boys have no respect for life. Our race is deterioting…its sad how fast this has happened. Even in the 80s, our people were screaming for change….what happened???

The only thing I have to ask is WHY ISN’T PROGRAMS LIKE THIS ON BET? Makes you think…. doesn’t it? Anyway, #24 & #25…. I applaud you! I enjoy reading comments like those because it still gives me hope. Reading “Nobody respects life and the young folks nowadays don’t mind dying.” makes me sick to my stomach. I’m only 21 but like #24 said… I was shown positivity in my life and chose not to become another statistic like most of my fam. I understand your environment shapes you but “DAMN!” do you have to be a product of your environment? ESPECIALLY when it IS NOT a positive one? Like #25 said, LACK OF RESPONSIBILITY and that’s what it comes down to. YOU have to look for positivity… you have to strive to better things for YOURSELF in order to “get right” and HELP the community. Also to #17, you sound like you’re in denial. Just because you know there’s a suicide prob doesn’t make it ok…. try educating and helping others. Hiding the truth is NOT education. Your negative attitude towards THE TRUTH disgusts me because it makes me feel like you don’t really care and YOU SHOULD. These are YOUR people so act like it! So instead of trying to find something wrong with this VITAL information, try finding something useful to make positive changes.

One of the posters(FANCYFACE) didnt understand why the violence is occuring at funeral homes. It is because the funeral homes have chapels where funerals are held when the deceased doesnt have a church home, so it all make sense……I absolutely love this site and what it represents. Intellegent young black people giving stimulating stories to wake up our society, along with the fun stuff. I want to PERSONALLY thank you guys, as a young black man, for bringing things like this to our attention. I’m still thinking about the black history story you posted on the “first video vixen”. I hope you guys can get a show one day and help shine light on a larger demographic!!!

Cosign with #24, 25, and 27 those are my thoughts exactly. I cant sit back and let this continue. We must help our people. Each one of us can inspire another and show them a positive path. A different perspective on life other than the damaged version they only seem toe be aware of.

WAKE UP BLACK PEOPLE. We have got to do better for real…

________________________
It’s happening at the funeral homes because that’s where the funerals are being held. Many of these victims are not members of a church and most churches will not conduct funerals for people who are not members. A few years ago funeral homes developed chapels so that they could have funerals at the funeral home.

Q.B.

Tuesday, April 1, 2008 /

Yea stuff like that does happen at funerals I remember I went to my cousin’s funeral. He was a drug dealer and he got shot in the back of the head. And it was so much commotion going on before and after the funeral he’s brother hated him. When we were viewing the body he’s brother tried to knock the casket off, it was real crazy. Then we went out to the grave they were lowering the casket and he spit in his grave.

So I’m not surprised at this, because they all had sympathy for him when he died I didn’t really have sympathy for him because he signed up for that, you gotta know that when you a drug dealer that’s the price you pay.

It is sad to say that most of the funerals for young people today involved them being a victim of violence. I have seen a strong police prescence at certain high profile funerals of individuals that have died from violence. It sad!!

Forget about the respect factor how about the fact that you are bold enough to kill somebody in front of a crowd of people with no fair of prison or any other penalty. This sounds like some old school wild west type stuff.

That makes me wonder if thats why that funeral director was so rude to the lady on “Oprah’s Big Give”. Did anybody see that? They said that he was nasty to her. I thought to myself, why wouldn’t this man come meet her to make arrangements to get paid. Next to the paramedics and doctors. Funeral ppl are the next responders.

Shootings at funeral parlors don’t even shock me. I’m from the Bay Area and we have seen a spike in church shootings this last couple of years. People used to have a respect for the house of God but not any more. A homeless man just got killed standing on the church steps of a church in Richmond, CA this Sunday.

This is soo true. When my cousin was killed I went to go attend the wake. When I got there and asked where he was ’some girl’ turned around yelling and asking ‘who the *uck I was. She went off and accused me of not being my cousin’s cousin, especially becuase I didn’t look like him…WTF?!? She almost got her a$$ handed to her, but I didn’t want to fight over my cousin’s dead body.

Okay I’m confused @ the funeral violence article. Who is commiting these acts of violence? Families of the dead or what? … That’s just crazy to me. Funeral Home violence? At first I thought it was a joke.

What’s SAD is how when information like this is posted on the loop you get forty to fifty comments tops, but Beyonce posts are well into the two hundreds.

The statement that the mortician made is the truth..so many people nowadays don’t care about living so they show out at people’s funerals. Another thing funerals is supposed to be the last time that we get to physically see a loved one, to have that memory ruined by people acting like fools is traumatic in itself besides the fact that your at a FUNERAL. I hope that people will wake up and realize what we are doing to ourselves.

I will be tuning in to CNN to check out that program, I noticed that a lot of other outlets are bringing on specials about African Americans: ESPN, PBS, CNN, C-Span even broadcasted the State of the Black Union. I’m left to wonder just what exactly is BET doing, in its effort to educate and inspire black people besides award shows? After all it is Black E.T. Maybe its just me but I feel that B.E.T. should be leading this movement and not be M.I.A.

It’s ironic that the brother created a post on this topic. Just recently in Brooklyn, an aspiring rapper was gunned down in the street. While commemorating him in front of one of those makeshift streetside memorials a 27 year old sister, who was a mother of two, was hit by a stray bullet when one of the “commemorators” let shots fly out. Besides many of the reasons that have already been touched on, in my opinion the reason for a lot of these type of shootings is because this society is systematically embedding in the minds of the people that God is either not sacred or is non-existent. Hypothetically speaking, if the Lord doesn’t exist, then why would anyone expect someone to find sacred a building that represents an entity that is taught against? Besides that, many young black people rightfully feel that the doctrine of the church is nonsense and doesn’t apply to their lives, especially these young black men. They’re being taught to conform, blend in, and be subservient. That is not the nature of the black man.

For years in L.A., there have been just as many gang members at their homeboys funerals, as there have been family members. They come dressed in the gang attire and show no shame. I’ve heard of the shootings and bodies being turned out of caskets; just shameful stuff.
Unfortunately too many of us condone this behavior in our own families, by looking the other way. I certainly saw it in mine and didn’t like it one bit, and let it be known.

This is just sickening…..When you read stuff like this it really makes you wonder how much worse the world can get….I mean damn shooting up a funeral…black funeral home directors having to hire security….
I’m sorry but we all know what kind of black folx do this type of shit…i say we put them all on a island and let them kill each….then at least decent black people will have chance…because black trash is tearing this race down….decent white folks don’t tolerate this type of crap from white trash…but decent black folks continue to turn away while the trash among us destroying an entire race……
Maybe I’m being to cynical…but I’m fed up with reading shit like this…it’s just getting worse.

Its unfortunate but true about the funerals. I remember in the 90s (in boston anyway) niggas was really doing drivebys at funeral homes. And I have been to some ghetto funerals where people almost came to blows or might as well have with the amount of smack they was talking!
I even seen my distant-distant cousin cuss out the reverend mid sermon for saying her brother’s name wrong! Smh…no respect!
these disruptive heathens need to realize these are people who suffered the trials of the earth and the very least they are owed for accomplishing their mission is to be with their family and loved ones in peace and have their souls in peace.
Not have their casket riddle with bullets! Shit-

I know this is the wrong place to bring up this issue. But it really concern me that this issue have only forty+ replies but if it was about Bey or Rhianna there would have been over 200 comments and half being negative. This is something I really cant understand. But it starts at home. I teach my child not to get caught up with celebrities cause they are humans and make many mistakes. To take issue like this one and dicuss it with her so she know that respect goes a long way. I know we make comments for fun but there are other issue that are much more important at times. It would be nice to get the majority input on other issues outside of what Bey is wering and Why is Rhi-rhi with Cb. Just to have an idea on what most of us are thinking and feeling. The state of the BLACK FAMILY/COMMUNITY??????!!!!!!
