NEWS ROUND UP: THE NEW NY GOVERNOR / US LENDERS ACCUSED OF RACISM
Monday, March 17, 2008

When Eliot Spitzer’s resignation took effect on Monday, David A. Paterson became New York’s first black governor, the fourth black governor in America’s history and America’s second blind governor.
Paterson was sworn in Monday afternoon as the state’s 55th governor. Check out the recap of the ceremony and an interactive timeline of Paterson’s life and career.
US LENDERS ACCUSED OF RACISM

Last July, the NAACP filed a class action lawsuit against fourteen of the country’s largest sub-prime mortgage lenders. It recently filed paperwork to speed up the process, in which it alleges that the banks steered black borrowers into taking predatory sub-prime loans, according to an article in Monday’s Telegraph.
According to a 2006 study, the Center for Responsible Lending found that when creditworthiness and credit risk were equal, blacks were still 31 to 34 percent more likely to receive higher rate, more expensive sub-prime loans than their white counterparts.
“Quickly resolving this case is essential for victims who have ruined credit and who are losing their homes,” said NAACP general counsel Angela Ciccolo.
“This isn’t just about justice for the victims. This case is about making sure that this kind of discrimination is stamped out for good.”
This is the first lawsuit to charge multiple lenders with racial discrimination; all of them are expected to contest it should the case go to court.
A copy of the suit is available online.

Black people are a force not to be reckoned with. The suit against the lenders know that we can use the law on our end as well.

you can be blind and be governor? i didn’t know that at all. they need to spread this around.
good for him. i’m a little upset @ spitzer though but i’m more upset @ this country. i love how france is so open about sexual things and we’re so afraid. yes, he cheated blah blah many men do it so why did he have to resign? in france, the president’s wife had an affair. ppl talked about it but i feel like americans would go CRAZY. then they split but now the president is with carla bruni, singer/former model, after they shacked up together. in america, that would be a no-no. yes this is different than the spitzer situation, but still, i think americans need to stop being so judgmental

Anyone remember the adulterous closet homo who was the ex governor of NJ? In this day and age, a cheating, hypocritical whore-monger has to step down for a decent black man to assume office. A semi-retarded president has to fuck up the entire country over two terms (yes, they actually voted Bush in twice) for a half-white guy to become a potential presidential party nominee. Can you imagine the roles being reversed? It’s amazing how whites in this country keep acting like they don’t relish the racist status-quo that does them so much good.

@ #18 NEW YORKER: No one is being judgmental. The point is that he is a big hypocrite who spent 100% of his time in office busting guys no worse than he is. Plus, he committed a crime. The ex president of France and the former first lady didn’t.

The saddest part is that these financial institutions mainly have minority loan officers executing the contracts, so they can find a way to shelter allegations. They also codify certain qualification metrics to basically filter applications based on race. There are many benefits of American governance (mainly transparency) that blacks in this country fail to exploit. Blacks in the corporate world should be reporting these on the low to the ACLU. More specifically, blacks in this country should learn to use the law to their benefit. everyone else does it. Education is key.

I just read that Gov. Pattersons wife is going to admit that they’ve had extramarital affairs. Why?
And to whomever said something about the closet homo governor of NJ, his wife wrote a book called “Silent Partner”. I think it would be an interesting read.

I was just talking to a real estate friend about the sub prime stuff. I was just telling her how they offered it more to blacks than anyone else. Many people thought that was all they could get so they jumped on it. Even those who were buying a house under 300k was offered sub prime and it wasn’t based solely on the whole credit and debt ratio either. Lenders would say u could refinance a year later but that’s not always guranteed and the interest rate may not be the best by time u try to refinance.People trusted the lenders and their real estate agents to give them the best deal and they trusted their decision. It’s a sad situation when everyone is out to hustle u and u can’t even trust ur accountant, lender, bank rep, etc. Im glad that the NAACP is on it becuz hindsight is always 20/20 and my prayers go out to those who are going through this ordeal.

What upsets me about these blog-sites is that you always read statements like blacks play the race card on everything, and that we are so sensitive, and that everything is not about race, and that we let our color keep us lazy, and that slavery ended 400 years ago, and that racism is a thing of the past, and that we use Affirmative Action to get ahead, and we stay on welfare, and all type of sh*t along those lines.
Well, where are those bloggers now when there is proof of this type of sh*t happening to us on a daily basis, such as the Mortgage lenders situation??? This is racism in its normal form of “YOU CAN’T SEE IT, BUT IT IS HAPPENING!”
People please wake up and realize classification is a way of holding some down while lifting others! I have always stated and will continue to state that, “RACISM STILL EXISTS! The only difference now, is that it is not as OUT IN THE OPEN AS IT USE TO BE” - because of laws…. Please continue to educate yourselves for it is harder to keep you down when your knowledge level is greater than that of those hate you because of your complexion.
