( Photo: Clarence Tabb Jr. / The Detroit News )On Monday, criminal charges were filed against Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his former chief of staff, Christine Beatty, following a 56-day investigation of their text message scandal that erupted in January.
There are a total of 12 counts, including obstruction of justice, misconduct in office and perjury.
Last week, Kilpatrick vowed not to resigned, however Detroit’s charter calls for the mayor to be removed from office if convicted of a felony.
Following the announcement of the charges, Kilpatrick declared his innocence:
“This has been a very flawed process from the beginning,” Kilpatrick said. “I look forward to complete exoneration.”

I am a resident of Detroit born and raised 7 Mile all day. And as a resident of my city I am appalled by the cockiness and arrogance that consumes Mayor Kilpatrick. He is an embarrassment to the city and it’s people. I have supported him during both of his elections but I can no longer defend a man who is not acting like a man nor willing to take responsibility for his actions. Kilpatrick and Clinton are two different cases. Due to the lies of the Mayor and Christine Beatty those innocent police officers had their lives turned upside down. I had no problem with him and Beatty having sexual relations b/c that’s between them, God, and their loved ones. But when they took the stand last summer and lied under oath they crossed the line. I’m just mad I was defending the both of them to my family and friends until I read those text messages. I really thought he would go on to do great things as a politician, but obviously I was wrong.

As a young woman who has grown up heavily involved with the city of Detroit…and someone who has seen the potential that the city has as a whole….I am COMPLETELY disheartened with Kwame’s latest scandal and all the negative press and attention he has brought to Detroit. As a young woman interested in politics Kwame gave people like me hope that we could actually positively impact a city while maintaining our integrity. I am NOT against Kwame…and I do appreciate the positive things that he has brought to Detroit. The Super Bowl.Money and Business from the Casinos….and he even helped revitalize the downtown area to be more tourist friendly. But ALL OF THAT GOT OVERSHADOWED when he started to spend citizens money on big cars….expensive vacations….parties with strippers…covering up crimes…..etc. Money that could be put back into the SCHOOLS, fine arts programs, and scholarship programs that the children of Detroit are in dire need of. African Americans toiled, day, after day to build the infrastructure of this country, their worked as construction workers, and builders, and they also worked in the fields planting the crops that were sold to Americans as well as to other countries as export, building the economy of this country. The fact is that most whites have never acknowledged this or appreciated this. Pat Buchanan says that we should be apprecaitive that we live in a country like America, I would add that America is as much our birth right as it is the whites of this country, because we African American’s had a hand in building the infrastructure of this country, and without the labour put forth by of African Americans, American would not be the country we see today.
When we see this country we must look at it as our legacy, we did build it, and regardless of who will or won’t acknowledge that, it is for us to know it, and want it to be the best country it can be for ourselves, and for the next generation of all Americans.

The interesting thing about Mayor Kilpatrick is that I remember reading his bio a couple of years ago in Ebony, I believe. The article discussed how Mayor Kilpatrick had basically saved the financial situation in Detroit. I don’t live in Detroit, but I felt pride at reading his accomplishment. It is astonishing how fast everything fell apart. Mayor Kilpatrick may be exonerated from some of the charges, but the perjury charge is going to stick. Brother can forget fighting that charge & call it a day.
As for Buchanan, he must be sleeping with one eye open to say things like that. I am still trying to determine how he could say that these situations were hoaxes, particularly Jena 6? How could Jena be a hoax? It happened. Facts are facts. Things like Jena 6 happen every day on smaller scales. Also, what assault epidemic is he referring to? What about the epidemic of slavery- being tortured, raped, pillaged for hundreds of years? This is so sad.
#30- You brought up an interesting point in your commentary that I myself have noticed. I live in the South, and I have always lived in the South. Basketball, and especially football are almost religions in the South. People plan their entire weekends around college games. I see Caucasians cheer on the mostly African American college athletes at all of these games, and I wonder…If “Tyrone or Sean, etc. wasn’t playing ball and about to sign a $60 million contract in a couple a years would he be “good enough” to even come within twenty feet of your precious sisters, nieces, and daughters- Mary Elizabeth, Beth Ann, etc.” I realized that all Caucasian people do not think this way, but there are still too many that do. African Americans are consistently categorized. Some Caucasians say/ think things like “Oh, you’re one of the good ones….” When other Caucasians do things wrong, they distance themselves from them by calling them “trash”, etc., but for the most part most African Americans are lumped into two categories: what people feel is the standard African American based on stereotypes and generalizations & the small population of “good” African Americans- however society decides to define “good”.

Believe it or not, Pat Buchanan is far from alone in his beliefs.
While I am no fan of Pat Buchanan, I think he’s a blatant racist, (he’s responsible for Richard Nixon’s Southern Strategy, which was a manifesto that appealed to white racist, particularly males, after President Johnson signed into law a number of civil rights measures.) but his statistics are correct.
My biggest frustration with us is the victim mentality, which always has us blaming “whitey” first, or someone else, as opposed to self examination, and hence correction. We will never resolve our issues as long as we look to place blame elsewhere. Racism exists, but it should be fuel to use the opportunities which are there, to better ourselves.
Being angry is not going to reduce the growing black prison population, nor the transmission of AIDS to our women by alot of those guys who’ve returned from prison carrying the virus.
Lastly, you might want to qualify the “whitey” in your title, and change it to “racist whitey.” From president John Adams (who refused to own slaves) to the abolishionist, to the folks that Obama has tapped into, there are lots of whites who can and will help us have access to the means of bettering ourselves. We don’t singularly have the numbers (espescially with the aforementioned AIDS epidemic and prison population, , to gang violence) to do anything on our own.

You have no clue of what all this guy has been involved in, and to what extent he would go through to keep it quiet. He is truly a fat nasty disgrace. He’s a liar and a cheater, and a murderer! In order to know everything about him surrounding this case, you’d have to do alot of reading, and/or be from the D, or know someone from the D with the scoop. He has a gangster like mentality, and he threatens the lives of people who dare go against him. He is bold and brazen and in your face, all for impure motives. He is the biggest fattest crook in the past few years, and that’s why people are gunning for his ass. I am not suprised by Pat Buchanan’s comments I watch MSNBC all the time and he always say’s something raciest. I seen a couple of weeks ago they were talking about Barack’s old preacher and he told this African American journalist to “Shut Up” when she was trying to explain something. If you listen to him he dosn’t hide his hatred.

I don’t agree with everything Rev. Wright said, frankly I think it was uncalled for. And I think if Senator Obama doesn’t become the Democratic nominee, it will be the fault of Rev. Wright and his lack of discretion with his words. Unlike Sen. Obama, Rev. Wright is not a thoughtful speaker.
Oh and since we’re on the subject of bigotry, here’s an article concerning Sean Hannity (from Fox News’s Hannity & Colmes). You may recall that on Hannity Colmes clips of Rev. Wright’s sermon first appeared on cable news. Well, Sean Hannity has maintained a friendship with a guy named Hal Turner, who is a well-known figure in white-supremacist circles in New Jersey.

People like Pat Buchanan unfortunetly will always think as they do, because they refuse to acknowledge that a country’s infrastructure that is built by African American, belongs to African Americans JUST AS MUCH AS it belongs to whites in America. African Americans toiled, day, after day to build the infrastructure of this country, their worked as construction workers, and builders, and they also worked in the fields planting the crops that were sold to Americans as well as to other countries as export, building the economy of this country. The fact is that most whites have never acknowledged this or appreciated this. Pat Buchanan says that we should be apprecaitive that we live in a country like America, I would add that America is as much our birth right as it is the whites of this country, because we African American’s had a hand in building the infrastructure of this country, and without the labour put forth by of African Americans, American would not be the country we see today.
When we see this country we must look at it as our legacy, we did build it, and regardless of who will or won’t acknowledge that, it is for us to know it, and want it to be the best country it can be for ourselves, and for the next generation of all Americans.
I’I'm trying to determine why my comment wasn’t released yesterday. I was told yesterday that it was being moderated. It is interesting that my comment never got through (it didn’t have any vulgar language, and I addressed each of the three issues above), especially when there are comments on this site that use vulgar language, attack other site users, etc. and are posted. I tried to not take it personally, but it is difficult when I see some of the other comments that have been released to the post. I used to think there were fewer comments on the political topics b/c it seemed as if some people cared less about politics/domestic issues than they did about the latest entertainment news, but now I wonder if many of the comments are just being held in the moderation mode and never released. Can someone help me out with this?
