RUNWAY REVIEWS: FASHION WEEK IN PARIS

Wednesday, March 5, 2008

rihannajump-copy.jpg

There’s New York and London, but nothing beats Fashion Week in Paris. All the lovers of Fashion and the best in the industry came out for the Fall 2008/2009 runway shows from the most exciting designers in the business. Here’s my quick rundown of the most buzzed about shows plus, my personal favorites:

BALENCIAGA

balenciagaparis.jpg

My favorite show this season - Balenciaga. It was sexy yet extremely modern featuring this season’s trend of sculpted clothing. Nicolas Ghesquière never disappoints…

LOUIS VUITTON

LOUIS VUITTON FW 08/09 (4) LOUIS VUITTON FW 08/09 (3) LOUIS VUITTON FW 08/09 (2)

One of the most talked about shows because of the crazy high heel shoes models had to endure on the runway. Marc Jacobs is always one to step out the box - with remarkable apparel and great bags (as usual)…

LOUIS VUITTON FW 08/09 LOUIS VUITTON FW 08/09 (5) LOUIS VUITTON FW 08/09 (6)

CHANEL

CHANEL FW 08/09 (4) CHANEL FW 08/09 (2) CHANEL FW 08/09

This season, Chanel brought it back to the basics with tweeds and knits the label are known for. Perhaps a yawner for the more modern Chanel fan Karl Lagerfeld has caught but, did you see that set?…

CHANEL SETTING (2) CHANEL SETTING

ALEXANDER MCQUEEN

MCQUEEN FW 08/09 (2) MCQUEEN FW08/09 MCQUEEN FW 08/09 (3)

Another favorite of mines from Paris, Alexander McQueen brought a stunning dark fantasy for his Fall collection…

MCQUEEN FW 08/09 (6) MCQUEEN FW 08/09 (5) MCQUEEN FW 08/09 (4)

VIKTOR & ROLF

VIKTOR & ROLF FW08/09 (2) VIKTOR & ROLF FW08/09 VIKTOR & ROLF FW08/09 (4)

One of the most creative shows this season, duo Viktor & Rolf practically made 3-D clothing with words popping out of their clothing. A stretch for ready to wear, but it makes a good fashion show…

VIKTOR & ROLF FW08/09 (6) VIKTOR & ROLF FW08/09 (5) VIKTOR & ROLF FW08/09 (3)
MORE CREATIVITY FROM GALLIANNO & VIVIENNE WESTWOOD

JOHN GALLIANO FW 08/09 (3) JOHN GALLIANO FW 08/09 (2) JOHN GALLIANO FW 08/09

John Galliano is quite the character and loves creating a few on the runway. Vivienne Westwood brought a twist of models on tilts in her safari themed show…

VIVIENNE WESTWOOD FW08/09 VIENNE WESTWOOD FW 08/09 (2) VIENNE WESTWOOD FW 08/09

ELIE SAAB

ELIE SAAB FW08/09 (3) ELIE SAAB FW08/09 (2) ELIE SAAB FW08/09

Elie Saab - a favorite to many stars bright a swirl of color and fun to their collection, while still remaining elegant. Word is Beyonce, already ordered her bundle…I predict this will be a favorite.

ELIE SAAB FW08/09 (6) ELIE SAAB FW08/09 (5) ELIE SAAB FW08/09 (4)

I could go on and on about Paris but, luckily you have style.com and elle.com to do that. Check out more fashion shows there, including more from London and New York that passed.

These designers deliberately exclude black models from their shows and adverts. Why are YOU doing what they themselves aren’t willing to do by promoting them to a black audience? Black people wake up.

I actually saw models walk for shows that hadn’t had any black models in a very long time! Jourdan Dunn for DKNY, Marc Jocobs, Prada, Louise Vuitton & Valentino, Hermes ect. Georgie Baddiel walk for Marc Jacobs and Louise Vuitton too DVF ect. Chanel Iman for Marc Jacobs, Dior, JPG, Galliano, Hermes ect. Liya Kebede for Givenchy ect. Yordanos Teshager for Giorgio Armani and a few other Milan and NY shows. Its progress but will the runways stay at least a little diverse like it has been this season, add more diversity, or go back to that ~token~ black model who only walks for the majority is the questiont that needs to be asked?

“These designers deliberately exclude black models from their shows and adverts. Why are YOU doing what they themselves aren’t willing to do by promoting them to a black audience? Black people wake up.”

First of all, I am in the fashion industry. I know and have seen a lot. It is a pretty big statement when designers do not use Black models. And from what I have learned…basically what they are saying is that we are striking people. A lot of the times when you put your clothes on a washed out cracked out looking model, it puts the audience at the attention of the clothes and not neccessarily the model walking in clothes.

It is very planned, if you will, occurence that happens time and time again on the runway. You may see it as discrimination, yet I am Black and I do not see it as such. But once again, I have been in the industry for a very long time now. My thoughts on the subject would be very different from the average person who is just getting into designers like Lavin, and Tulah, and Matthew Williamson, etc. because Kanye West is attending these designers shows in Paris.

yeah thankfully we still have some black models out there. i think what ppl need to understand is that minority models in general are not getting any shine. it’s mostly white models up there and most of ti has to do with not only the requirements for being a model (you have to be tall which means less asian models, you have to be extra thing which means less black/hispanic models) but also the fact that designers want their models to blend in. they want them to look alike so that they are the blank canvas. that’s one of the reasons why there are more chinese or japanese models than indian models; indians are darker and therefore already stand out among the other models while asians can be pale. same with blacks and with hispanics. most of the hispanics you see on the runway could be mistaken for white girls. thank goodness we have our chanel iman(s) to represent and hopefully the fashion industry changes.

btw these fashion posts keep improving. great job

Wednesday, March 5, 2008 /

sorry for the 3rd post lol but i i meant to say that when it comes to asians, indians are less likely to be sought after models than chinese/japanese models b/c although they are asian too, they are darker so stand out more and negate the whole blank canvas idea

@39 - Channel Iman, Jourdan Dunn, Georgie & Lila Kabede.

Balenciaga has not used blk models in the last few seasons( maybe never). I love love love the clothes and handbags but I refuse to buy them because he does not use black models.

Karl Lagerfield fior Channel use to have such a multi cultural runway. I don’t know why he won’t use black models anymore.

John Galliano for Christen Dior also uses about two or three black models per show.

Vivenne West(sp)_ uses black models and one is featured in her latest campaign although there has been talk about the campaign being sterotypical.

Marc Jacobs has been using black models reguarly for some time now(about 2 per show).

Dianne von Furzenburg(sp) uses a lot of black models in her show. So I don’t feel gulity and those buying those wrap dresses.

Someone mentioned that there are no Asian models and that is false. There are a number of Asian models, many who do very well. Most of them booked more shows than the average black models at fashion week.

2#21, thank you, I am glad someone understood what it is I was saying. It is not often that happens, since everyone thinks know something about every subject and that someone else is always wrong for liking what they like. Bottom line I answer to God and myself. WATCH me do me! is what you have to tell some people because they will want to bring you down to their level. Most Black, since I know more Blacks than Whites, can afford these clothes, and yes, I am one that does buy some of these pieces. I pick and choose, and they will be in my closet for years to come.

@Dollface, that little girl in the picture up top will be my daughter to…and in Brown as you put.LOL. I love fashion, I always have. Grace Jones is one of those who of course is not going to be put on blast because she is older now. She is beautiful, and she is a regular at a lot of Paris shows. Designers love and respect her. As the season changes, fashion does as well. I am not saying that there is no racisim in fashion but you have to do your research before you step to a person like me and say “I don’t know why you spend your money on blah, blah, blah, black people will never learn, blah, blah, blah” Because my fashion history is one thing I hip you to.

If you don’t know, now you know…

Makes sense @ blank canvas! white wash tells the audience to look at my clothing not that beautiful caramel complexcion woman with the curves…. ok I get it…. well someone up above me said it best “get ya portfolio right” then you can afford without looking at your bank statement this stuff until then I too will admire from afar.

If you have to see how much an item is then that means you shouldn’t be purchasing it as far as designer clothing and cars go.

I will add though that these designers could care less if the average person buys thier clothing.. They do not want the average person SAVING up to buy a bag or a dress they would prefer a long standing customer whose money is long and deep.

The fashion posts are getting ALOT better. Great job with this one.

McQueen, Galliano and Westwood are genuiuses. Balenciaga is always good.

I’m not used to LV bags looking so basic. Usually it’s a specticle lol I like how versatile Marc jacobs is. He’s such a great designer.

Elie Saab was more interesting when Halle Berry first started wearing them and they were still really unknown. But that collection is still nice.

Black representation in fashion has always been a struggle. The fashion world is very Euro-centric from the style of the clothes to the look of the models, so change is going to take time. But I have seen more black girls on runways in the last 2 years than I have ever seen.

These posts are great, but couture shows speak to such a small percentage of the population, which would probably be a very minute percentage of readers.

What about the American designers or the RTW collections? Those are more relevant in my opinion - I love Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren, and Zac Posen.

don’t get me wrong I as a fashionista I like to look but its kinda like posting about Lamborghinis and Bentleys because they are pretty and exist…not sure of the relevance though.

I agree about the black models…these clothes are not made for women of color. The sizes suck, even if you wanted to buy them, and some only go up to 10 and sometimes smaller than that. They do not want our curves or our money!

The only piece that looks classic enough to “invest in” (lol) is the black Balenciaga…beautiful and timeless.

@chic noir a census was taken at fashion week (not sure if it was the new york fashion week or paris) and the percentage of asian models was equal to that of blacks. hispanics had a lower percentage than both. imo there are a good number of hispanic models but they may identify with a specific race so didn’t put hispanic down. idk but these were the stats

I’m a black woman and I cannot help that I like fashion, especially some of the top designers out there.

While it is unfortunate that not a lot of darker complexioned models are used, its because they would rather have a bland model rather than a striking one. The show should be about the clothes and not the model. Maybe one day designers will stop caring about how much attention the model is getting, but until then, expect a blank pallet aka white skin and nondescript features.

68.

Ok with these narrow-minded ass people on here! Even if you DON’T have the money to buy these pricey things, you should have aspirations to afford then EVEN if you don’t want them!

Don’t let the hood be your mentality as well as where you lay your head!

You buy products all the time from people who don’t want you wearing, buying, using their shit! That car you drive… That deoderant you wear? That dishwashing liquid….

How the fuck do you know how wants you using their product? I swear you lames with no sense of fashion or aspirational items bore me!

#55: “baby phat, apple bottoms, phat farm, sean john, coogi, house of dereon, ecko, roca wear, live mechanics, enyce, akademiks. ”

I don’t like any of the clothes from these designers. And that is not to say that I don’t support my people because Lord knows I will go out of my way to frequent black businesses, but if I don’t like the clothes then I just don’t like the clothes. And I grew up in the “hood” of Philly so I’ve seen those fashions all of the time. It just never appealed to me. Or maybe the people wearing them were always so hood I will now and always and forever associate that with hood. And everyone knows there is no place for hood in the collegiate or corporate worlds, especially if you want to be taken seriously. When are black folks going to learn that IMAGE DOES MATTER!

Also at #39:

Nice way to essentially categorize all black women as hoes and pinups. Nice job. Judgmental individuals like yourself disgust me.

71.

Wednesday, March 5, 2008 /

Every few years the fashion industry decides that ethnic models are either in or out. This year theyre in but last year they weren’t (with the exception of a few like Liya and Chanel). Thats just how the industry works, and unfortunately it will probably always be like that.

72.

Wednesday, March 5, 2008 /

@Bitchassness2 in response to to your comment
“where is our baby phat, apple bottoms, phat farm, sean john, coogi, house of dereon,.”
Firstly the forenamed clothes are actually quite expensive, I find it funny that some black people I know who don’t make up to the average income will rock these designers despite the price tag. I think you should wear what you can afford, if you can’t afford babyphat or chanel then dress nicely in non-designer clothes. Secondy I’m sure a lot of people on CL would agree that they wouldn’t be seen dead in House of dereonor applebottom clothing, so why would Tianna post about it?

Although Im still a student, once I’m working in the city I will be rocking Vivienne Westwood and Diane de Furstenberg because I like pretty things andalso because they use black models.

73.

Steve B

Wednesday, March 5, 2008 /

The black models are too striking is one of the weakest excuses I’ve ever heard for not hiring black models. If anyone believes this, they need to wake up to the reality of racism. I’m sure white models weren’t too striking when black models were dominatimg the runways in the 70’s. These designers will say anything to justify their racism.

I for one know that I cant afford Chanel, Balenwhatever but I know I can afford Baby Phat, House of Deron but you will not catch me in neither one of those clothing lines. Although I would like to also see a little diversity with the fashion blog.. since there isnt one maybe I’ll create my blog. I like seeing the things that Beyonce and Rhianna wear because I can always find them at a lower price elsewhere and not cost a G.

BITCHASSNESS I HARDLY BELIEVE YOU ARE AT YALE WITH THAT IGNORANT ATTITUDE. NONE OF THE DESIGNERS YOU MENTIONED ARE HIGH FASHION DESIGNERS…THAT IS WHY THEY ARE AT MACYS AND YOU CAN AFFORD THEM..WATCH BET’S GHETTO RIP THE RUNWAY FOR THAT MESS~

ITS OBVIOUS YOUR MAJOR ISNT FASHION, BUT EVEN AS A BLACK STUDIES MAJOR THATS SAD…THERE ARE BLA CK HIGH FASHION DESIGNERS SUCH AS RACHEL ROY!

AND I AGREE

The black models are too striking is one of the weakest excuses I’ve ever heard for not hiring black models. If anyone believes this, they need to wake up to the reality of racism. I’m sure white models weren’t too striking when black models were dominatimg the runways in the 70’s. These designers will say anything to justify their racism.

IF SOMEONE HAS BEEN IN THE INDUSTRY AND BELIEVE THIS, THEY ARE BRAINWASHED!

IGNORANCE IS BLISS…BOY OH BOY ..WE AS BLACKS SHOULDNT HAVE TO SETTLE FOR LESS….AND WHERE DO PEOPLE GET OFF THINKING THAT BLACK PEOPLE CANT FIT THESE CLOTHES? ALL RACES OF PEOPLE COME IN MANY SIZES! THERE ARE BLACK WOMEN WHO ARE SIZES 0-2 AND WHITE WOMEN WHO ARE 14-16! ALSO THERE ARE BLACK PEOPLE WHO CAN AFFORD THESE C LOTHES JUST AS THE MAJORITY OF PEOPLE ON WELFARE ARE WHITE..ENOUGH WITH THE STEREOTYPES AND DUMB INUENDOS!

i see a lot of nice things up here. i love the expression of oneself through fashion. however since in not a heir to anybody’s fortune i perfer saving my money to purchase things thats going to make me money in the end. Since i’ve got a family i cant think of just myself although its nice to “treat” myself every now and then. One day when i got it like that hopefully it will be another story but for now i plan to do more travelling when i retire and have something for my children to fall back on when im old and gray and big checks stop rolling in.

Too bad you will never see a little black girl in anything like this.Diane,Donna, Michael Kors and Zac Posen does use black models and haven’t seen YSL use black models since he retired.Don’t know about Karl Lagerfield even though he put Tyra and Kimora on the runway.Chanel always had elegant sets like that so I wasn’t suprised, but they look really nice!Like YSL said fashion isn’t what it use to be because “real beauty” isn’t appreciated.Even though I don’t see who would buy a $1000 shirt and pants while you can get a better looking one anywhere else from $40 to about $50.Only thing that why people love this is 1) because of the name.Just because it’s the name don’t make them any classier, elegant than the next.I buy accessories from them, but anything to clothes, won’t make a difference because it’s not like you will make a statement.Anybody can make the shit they make.It only shows you have money. But I love the fashion though I hope to get to London for Marangoni after I graduate from college to study fashion merchandising.

Oh yeah since I love Project Runway Christian did the damn thing!

>>These designers deliberately exclude black models from their shows and adverts. Why are YOU doing what they themselves aren’t willing to do by promoting them to a black audience? Black people wake up.

It’s so sad to see how black people put down other blacks. I see how black men on this board do. Whatev! Sistas, don’t let these no count men bring your spirits down. Black women are the # 1 consumers on there and the market is changing to suit your needs.

I love the Victor & Rolf. Very creative and AMAZING! Loved it.

No to the Louis. I get it….platforms are back… but not like that.

Alexander McQueen: sick of the goth look.

Don’t know if you guys watch Project Runway, but the winner’s outfits look very similar to Alexander McQueen’s collection. He did study with him so I don’t know… Just don’t like when someone gets called innovative for something that’s been done before

Tianna, I ain’t mad at cha….but I am bothered at the lack of brown on ALL these runways. In a previous comment someone commended a designer for having 2 black models per season. WHOOPDY- EFFIN-DO. I guess now he deserves a cookie?! Black people, please wake up! Stop wasting your money on designers who are SHOWING you they time and time again they don’t want it; WHETHER you can afford it or not is irrelevant to the point……and that’s RAMPANT RACISM.

That black canvas stuff is certified, grade A- BULLiSH

“and Diane de Furstenberg because I like pretty things andalso because they use black models.”

That’s Diane Von Furstenberg

And thanks to you one and all for thinking only white designers make high prices and high class stuff. Micheal B, Tracy Reese, Catherine Malandrino, Zac Posen, Oscar De La Renta, Carolina Herrera, Gerogio Armani, Elber Albaz (French), Anna Sui, etc., the list goes on with Black and Non-white designers…great designers too!

If it is so certified, why is it that Kimora, when she does use Black models, all of them are pretty well know. Usually it takes a Karl, Gerogio, Zac, etc. to use new and unseen Black models before a person like Kimora uses them for her show.

If it is certified…why do they use Black models at all?? And I mean any designers at any time, because they don’t have to! NO ONE IS OBLIGATED in the fashion industry to do anything! They don’t have to ever use a BLACK model, so why do they??

Think about it dummy…when a person like Muccia Prada does not use a Black model in 15 years and all of a sudden she does…what does she get…MEDIA ATTENTION OUT THE A$$…if her collection is wack, guess what..SHE USED A BLACK MODEL..the first in 15 years…so certified my a$$.

Fashion has always been about the times…what is going on in the real world. Some designers are smart enough to capitalize off the fact that the world, the schools we attend, the corporate jobs we have, the stores we shop in, still hold racists views…

Why do you think Viktor and Rolf had that saying in their clothes “NO” and “DREAM” that is a statement they are making.

OPEN YOUR MIND BITCHES!!!!

Wow, sorta underwhelming…hmmm And, I can’t understand how anyone would argue against someone saying black people are underrepresented in the fashion world. Of course we are…where have you been? I do like high-end, though… I think we should do more of that…I mean, find our independent brothers and sisters and support them as opposed to spending hundreds of millions on mass produced commercial crap like Baby Phat and Apple Bottoms. Support real art!

Love this discussion. I decided against doing a review of the shows b/c 1. I figured that style.com and the Washington Post already did it, and 2. I wasn’t sure if my readers were that into haute couture. But that’s silly…everyone has an opinion and the Paris shows are the hottest of Fashion Week.

I salute Tianna for adding her voice into the mix, though, and i plan on doing the same.
