STARS OF THE ‘NOTORIOUS’ MOVIE ANNOUNCED

Thursday, March 6, 2008

gravy2.jpg

After a nationwide search, it looks like Jamal Woolard (also known by his rap name Gravy) has landed the lead in the biopic Notorious, based on the life of rapper Christopher ‘Notorious B.I.G.’ Wallace, who was gunned down in 1997.

The movie also stars Angela Bassett, who will play Biggie’s mom, Voletta Wallace; Anthony Mackie as Tupac Shakur; and Derek Luke as Sean “Diddy” Combs. George Tillman Jr. will direct the film, which begins shooting March 24 in New York City.

Make sure you peep the other side-by-side photos of the stars of the movie after the cut…

DIDDY PLAYED BY DEREK LUKE

TUPAC PLAYED BY ANTHONY MACKIE

I actually think all these actors can pull off their respective roles, but I don’t know how that Gravy dude raps or acts so I can’t speak for him. I guess we will have to wait and see. How do you feel about the casting choices?

I think they did a good job in casting.

Only time will tell though. This should certainly be interesting.
I have to google this Gravy character.

The choices are great EXCEPT the pivotal role of B.I.G. I’m like Angel, I don’t know enough about homeboy plus I think theother rap dude resembled Biggie more.

Uhhh not to sure about the guy playing biggie. Would have been nice if they actually found an actor. But we’ll see. The rest will probably do a good job, Angela will be GREAT!

@ 4. I would think the rapping would be more important in this film (that’s just my opinion). We all know Biggie had that swagger. So if you get that down, than you can probably get your act on too. I hope he does his thing, because I wanna see the movie.

WTF????? Why isn’t Diddy playing “Diddy”? Also, why is the great Angela Bassett playing his mother???? This is suppose to be realistic right so……………..Who is playing lil Kim, BEYONCE or something???? Get the fuck out of here! lol

In addition: There is nothing wrong with Angela playing an older woman because her acting skills will sine. However, I wish she obtains more opportunities to play roles that show her beauty and grace as well.

I Love Angela Bassett, but I think the lady who played 50’s grandmother in Get rich or Die trying looks more like biggie’s mom. I can’t wait to see who plays lil kim and faith.

I just read that Jamie Hector (Marlo from the wire) is playing D-ROC, Biggie’s best friend…should be a good movie.

I love Angela so at least that will go well. I do not know about everyone else, but it has to be better the Puffy’s A Raisin in the Sun performance. Thank God the egomanic didn’t demand to play himself that would be too much. So who is playing LiL Him and Faith Evans. And no that wasn’t a typo.

the one has spoken…shut the BACK DOOR and call someone in Pennsylvania so we can shut the Democractic contest down and announce Barack the winner!

26.

Angela, Derek and Anthony Mackie are excellent actors, so they will probably hold their own in the movie. Since this is “Gravy’s” first time acting, that may be a challenge esp., when you are playing someone who had such a distinctive character.
But George Tillman is a good director, so it will probably be just fine.

You know I honestly think some people on here just say dumb things out there mouth to evoke a response or reaction. This is my first ever post on concrete loop, but it is time. #6 you must not get enough attention. I respect your opinion on BIG not being able to rap although everyone who is a real hip hop fan knows that he could be arguably the greatest rapper of all time, but that is my opinion. But when you start talking about someone’s mom who also lost a child you are just an idiot and it can’t be real. So since you want everyone to pay you some attention here you go. You don’t get enough in your life so here you go. And that is not just to you either. There are a lot of people on here just like you who just say the complete opposite of what is being said just to get attention. I know me personally if I didn’t like something I wouldn’t bother with it, but you guys go out of your way to post something negative which amazes me. I thought this was here so we could know what was going on with our celebrities and support or even sometimes offer positive criticism but some of you nasty people are just ridiculous.

So here you go a post just for you.

PROVOST...

Thursday, March 6, 2008 /

Doesn’t Angela play everybody, lol? Casting is decent though, based on resemblance at least.

Angel, you said the rapping is more important than the acting, but I ask you: don’t you think it would be smarter to make sure the acting is in place first? I’m thinking that the key to sounding the part is effectively mimicking BIG’s heavy-tongued speech and rhythm habits while rapping, and a LOT of people can do that, but to truly be lost in the character and rediscover his mannerisms, the way he would express different emotions, his pain, implications of his relationships with the other people in his life and so forth (so the movie will be good even when he’s NOT rapping) you’d want to find an accomplished actor.

EXACTLY @ #34!! They need to choose someone that can ACT first as that is the MAIN art of Big’s “swagger”.. This movie aint about rappin.. it’s about his life… J.Lo did “Selena” and everybody know Selena sang better than her.. They can DUB Biggie’s voice over the performances if he cant get the “voice” right.. DUH! As long as ol dude can act, he can pull it off.

I think the other actors are going to do fine as well. Yall act like Biggie’s mom always looked like that.. Angela has to play her in younger years as well, i’m sure. Stop getting caught up on looks so much.

I think these are excellent choices for the role. I love me some Derek Luke he is just sexy to me, its them lips (to bad he don’t like sistas). He is also a very talented actor and will do good playing Diddy. I am also sure Diddy had a say so in who he wants to play him. I little of subject but remember Ruthie from the Real World she looks just like Tupac to me LOL.

As far ,as the casting goes. I for one think that Ms. Angela Bassett will (”show out”) lke she has done in most of her other roles, she is defintley a great chose. With her skills, she will be able to capture Ms. Wallace (which I’m sure Ms.Wallace herself made it very clear that, she would only get one the best actress to protray her). Ms. Wallace is a very honest, endearing and courageous woman. Just by reading her book and seeing her in her interviews that she isn’t the type that’s going to have this project be “half assed”!

I think that Derek Luke will be able to pull off “Puffy” and Anthony Mackie should be able to portray Tupac(whom I love,I guess I’m one of those:@ #28 )

With Ms. Wallace herself involved he has to, only time will tell and I’m sure that the director will make sure that he does his thing, too! This whole movie looks like it’s going to be a 3-ring circus and a glorification of this dude, who was talented, but was off as hell. It’s another coonfest and it just seems like the only pictures that get greenlighted in Hollywood are the ones that reinforce the worship of hip-hop as a religion and these rappers as gods. What is the movie really going to focus on? I don’t understand the point. At least Tupac had a focus and a message. It wasn’t like Biggie Smalls ever had a real message other than promoting satanism, drug-dealing, rape, and murder. At least these out of work black actors can make some money. All these great historical black people that can have movies made about them and this clown gets memorialized onscreen, lol.

Anthony Mackie is a D List actor. It would be a miracle for him to pull of a character as charismatic as Tupac. Diddy also has a swag and presence that’s hard to duplicate. To get techinical with the looks: I think that Gravy favors Biggie, Angela not really. Her and Miss Wallace do have the same eye and mouth gesture. Derek Luke looks nothing at all like Diddy, which I’m surprised isn’t playing himself, and Anthony Mackie doesn’t really look like Tupac to me.
I think the acting experience counts too, unless acting classes are taken, or it comes naturally. Good luck!

What also bugs me is whether or not they will be doing any filming from Tupac’s perspective, but then the movie wouldn’t be about Biggie would it? But still, they could always just play back an old video with Tupac or Biggie in it, right? I know they do that in some movies.

Regardless, I am a an of both men. To Mac and B.I.G. R.I.P.

I don’t want to get into this debate of who the greatest rapper is (IMO Pac is) but some of ya’ll saying it’s BIG and I don’t understand how? He olny had two albums ( I know it’s not his fault he got killed) but what did he say or do in those two albums that would make him the king of rap?

IMO Biggie only rapped about three things: designer clothes, money and dope. Pac could beef, inspire, educate and party and not to mention act. It’s obvious to me he (Psc) was the better entertainer, can some in detail explain to me why Biggie is the batter rapper?

Not a Biggie hater I just want to hear argument why he is the better rapper.

I think Pac was a better rapper and I cried like he was my cousin when he died. (whooo JESUS). But I do LOVE Biggie! This sounds real brutal, but Jay Z would’ve never had a throne to sit on in NYC if it wasn’t for Biggie dying. And also, yea Big only had a couple of albums but you obviously didn’t listen to the entire album or the songs to know that he didn’t just rap about material.

You are right I have never bought a Biggie album, I have never been that interested in him to do so. I like some of his song but I don’t think he did enough in that short time to be named the “greatest rapper of all time”.

On another note I agree with you that Jay Z wouldn’t have been as big as he is if Biggie would have never died. Nobody on the west coast even knew who Jay Z was untill Biggie died and if you (Jay z) could not shine throught all that drama during that what is supposed to be your “best years” that means something.

Now I believe Nas is worth his hype.

Not Impressed

Thursday, March 6, 2008 /

I love all of these actors, respectively. That being said, I really don’t think any of them, apart from Gray are right for these roles. Mackie playin PAC?! You’ve got to be kidding me. He’s got no edge whatsoever. If he could pull it off, I’d be impressed. That dude from the movie FRESH would have been a cool fit tho. Angela Bassett, should have given this one a pass. I really don’t want to see another American actor try and pull off a JAFAICAN accent. Biggs moms is Jamaican, and does have a slight accent still. This Gray dude might work..because, he’s virutally unheard of so he if he can maintain that raw appeal, then fine. Derek Luke as Diddy?!..Well he was real good in his last film where he played that African dude. So this should be an easier challenge. He’s just soooo much better looking than diddy..I don’t see the resemblance at all. So that could take a lot away from his character credibility.

these execs are so out of touch. Gravy is a clown with no respect in brooklyn. If yall was going cast a rapper, cast Guerilla Black.

I agree with #75 I thought that was gurella black at first. Gravy a nice mc though I think they did a pretty good job casting. Derek Luke to much of a nice guy to play puff.

I’m dying to know who’ll play Kim, Faith, and Charlie Baltimore, and Suge night for that matter. I have a feeling that they will avoid casting for Suge and simply insert that “diss” clip from the ‘95 Source Awards (like they did in the movie Bobby).

wow only character favor the actual people was the actor playing biggie - angela no way near biggies mom but i believe she will be able to pull it off (great actor) the remaining characters > lol - start over do a new search when we watch the movie the audience want to believe we are actually looking at the original people

Just a reminder to everyone:

In casting, dead-on or extreme physical likeness is a BONUS. Whe it boils down to is, casting director will favor an outstanding portrayal and a similar or remote likeness over an extreme physical likeness.
I just think its quite ambitious for ANYONE to take on roles of figures as charismatic as Big, Diddy, and (my husband) Tupac with out making it look like that VH1 Movie “Too Legit” they did on MC Hammer. ESPECIALLY actors with little experience or prior experience with meager roles (i.e. Anthony Mackie).

Non of the actors look like the real people. They should have stuck with the real people(The real mom should play herself, and Diddy should play himself)

I am happy to hear they are doing a movie. However I think the casting is a little off. While I think Anthony Mackie is a fair actor however I think they should have gotten someone that at least somewhat resembles Pac. I mean as a person who views the movie there are several things the audience relates to storyline, how close the characters came to the mannerisms of the person, and all in all resmeblence. I understand the need for using seasones actors despite the lead role. But at least get to where we can leaave the movie saying wow great acting and great casting. Just my lil 2 cents. Can’t wait for the movie.

Monday, March 10, 2008 /

You don’t have to look exactly like a person to be a good person to play them. You have to display their mannerisms and personality to a T. Not stereotype them and play them only as everyone else knows them, but bring a three dimensional character to the screen. Some movies are horrible because they just casted based upon physical feature and nothing else was stellar about the production. I see this being a serious production as opposed to a cheesy film about rappers like I thought it would be. I think this film will have depth.

129.

realistic

Monday, March 10, 2008 /

In the end a great film tells a great story and comes across natural, whether you know Biggie or not, this film should be just a great story portrayed well. Physical likeness means nothing if it is not portrayed well.

Yo just to point out a fact none of these actors look anything like the people there ment to be playin.. and as far as B.I.G to be the best rapper alive, yer right you must be out of your dam mind.. every rap battle tupac and biggie had, tupac won hands down…and you fools sayin rappin is all about good wording and lyrical flow, yer it is… but tupac had that and he had heart and soul 2… forget about bigge’s swagger i dnt give a fck!… yeh he could rap, but not once did i hear him spill his heart into the mic like pac.. tupac touched people with his rhymes, the only thing that came outta new york was fake ass, wannabe street thugs, thats why tupac left, . i see that this movie is based around biggie… you would get a better story with pac… i mean this dude did movies he went to prison he moved to LA he lived the dream… he had a kind heart… he never stood down to noone and and last but not least the nigga could rap!.. so this movie will be a total wash out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wednesday Review: Notorious Underworld Millionaire « MaR_advice

Wednesday, February 4, 2009 /

[...] Notorious - “we are…we are…” I loved every aspect of this movie. Jamal Woolard was exceptional, as well as little Christopher Wallace, Jr. The movie is told in first person by ‘Biggie’. It really depicts how he grew and the type of life he lived prior to his fame up to his death. They even show footage from the day of his funeral and how his mother had him go through Brooklyn before the cemetery. You can hear Hypnotize in the background. It was just a great movie and I think all of the Bad Boy artists are portrayed to a dot - especially the man who played Diddy. He danced liked him, if you can call that dancing!
