VIDEO: ANOTHER BANNED EPISODE OF ‘THE BOONDOCKS’
Monday, March 24, 2008
Here is the other banned episode of Aaron McGruder’s hit comic strip and television show The Boondocks. We posted the other last week, so if you missed it click here.
This episode features Uncle Ruckus, a self-hating black man (voiced by Gary Anthony Williams), getting his own offensive BET reality show.
In related news, the Cartoon Network has not acknowledged that the BET attacks were the reason for pulling the “Boondocks” episodes. All a spokesperson there would say is that Turner Cable was not contacted by BET, Lee or Hudlin.

HHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!
i can see why this episode was banned, because it was telling the truth. there are many uncle ruckus out there and it sad. on the other hand, i think some people put too much responsibilty on BET. yeah most of the shows are disgraceful but at the same time the people are lovin it. so ……..and this is just my opionion so don’t take personal…..but maybe we need to change our mindset on what we find entertaining. but back to BET. can y’all please stop calling “College Hill” College Hill call it for what it is THE BLACK REAL WORLD. them kids hardly say anything about studying, classes and dang you don’t even get a shot with in a classroom. i don’t even watch BET like i use to, now i only watch it when tthey have those deccent specials they be having. what it even worse is that they taking this international. but like i said before we can’t solely blame BET.

I am from Canada. 10 years ago, errbody around here was dreamin to have bet. When we had to go to the USA to see our family, we were ready with a tape to record all the shows or videos. OOOH the whole days. now Errbody got it cause of the satellite. And trust nobody around here watch bet on a regurlar basis. We only watch shows like “Hell date”, Sometimes “College hill” or awrds shows.
We Can’t stand 106 & park no mo. They always passing the same teeni boppers songs. I hate it. Rocsi gets on my last nerves. And that show “Bet now” y they passing old songs from year 2006 but it’s the same video’s ALL THE FREAK”N TIME. I dont believe that people are workin there. They must be on vacation 24/7.

I just watched it and honestly, I can’t even laugh at these banned episodes because I feel like beneath the over-the-top exaggerations, there may be a hint of truth.
I’m not one of those people who feel like BET should be banned outright. The reality is that they have a STRONG audience, and like any product or service, where there is demand there will always be supply. If they banned BET tomorrow, every Black blogger will start creating BET-like shows on YouTube and posting them on their sites.
I just hate there is there is NO balance. It’s cool to have a Black Entertainment Channel if you also have a Black EDUCATION Channel. I mean Jerry Springer can make a fool out of white people too because for every redneck white show, there are 10 sophisticated white networks and shows to counter them. In the case of BET, there is NONE.
BET on its own is counter-productive to the Black community. The answer is not to ban it. The answer is to ANSWER it.
Unfortunately, I do not have the resources to accomplish that feat on my own. And I believe those who have the resources do not have the “will” because otherwise it would have already been done.

lol that was hilarious. unfortunately, there are ppl who hate their own race. not only does ruckus represent those ppl, but he also represents those who know nothing about the race but think that whatever they see in the media is a good portrayal. that’s why BET is a problem. yes i used to watch it as a child (moderately though b/c my mother HATED the channel and didn’t want me watching it) and i came out great but there are kids that are watching this channel that think that in order to be black, they have to act a specific way and placing those types of limitations on ppl hurts in the end. i mean seriously BET is so one-dimensional. some ppl say “well BET doesn’t represent me” and they fail to realize that when the channel called itself BLACK entertainment channel, in other ppl’s eyes, it became a represention of BLACK ppl

# 7 you took the words out of my mouth. I have been saying for the longest time that “college hill” is the black real world. From the few episodes I saw I never saw any of those students going to class, studying for an exam, or involved in any of the school activities. They were either partying, drinking, fighting, or sleeping with each other smh. Anyways Aaron Mcguder is the man. He hit the nail on the head about BET. I’d like to see them improve their shows because a previous poster stated its like an eighth grader came up with the concepts. lol at firing AJ and Free because they made 106&Park successful (which I think holds some truth) and re-vitiligo. This episode was the truth.

This is one of the best adult cartoons out. I have felt this way about BET for the longest. That is why i call Cablevision to request better programming in the form of TVOne. Does not make any sense how BET can have such stupid content on a show an call it programming. To play videos and air unintelligent show is demeaning to all people of color. JESES Look at Telemundo, Galavision, Univision (hispanic network). They have been able to have better content then BET. Just a sad shame.

in our house we watch BET JAMS occationally. that’s suppose to be for adults. sure they have some good shows on there and show a variety of black entertainment from around the world. but there’s barely a budget it seems. shit come off real cheap and shows with promise doesn’t seem invested in. they show old BET Sunday reruns from back in the 90s and earlier. That’s just shitty how cheaply BET is funded.
We watch it to show to expose our daughter to musicians from African and the Carbbean and an occational African film. I’m glad they show that at least. No regular BET in this house because it’s just ass. I can’t raise a child to see herself as a person with a beautiful mind and a member of a beautiful people with regular BET.
Only thing my daughter will learn from that channel is that women are only worth a man sticking his dick in and nothing else. Just put in weave (never natural hair- always straight), wear little clothing, bend over and never use big words, a man will think you’re worth being called a baby’s momma. Don’t get me started on the underlying message of the superiority of the eauropean ideal of beauty that flows in the undercurrent… No I don’t want the channel to be all lectures from Morehouse. I’m just saying all aspects of black entertainment can be represented. I can have Kat Williams then have some news. Whatever happened to BET News anyhoo? While growing up I had NWA and I had Boogie Down Productions. I had the Vanitys and Pebbles as well as the MC Lytes and Queen Latifahs. You know what I’m saying?

EVERYONE IS MISSING THE REAL POINT OF THE SHOW.
Yes, the exploiter that is BET is part of it. But that is not even in the realm of what the producers are really trying to let us know.
The real issues were the ones that Uncle Ruckus was spouting, which is the waste of the African American race: Peep this and tell me if Im wrong.
- The biggest percentage of people in jail are BLACK
- The poorest people in the U.S. are BLACK
- The communities that are the most run down are BLACK
- The lowest in education (elementary, high school and college) are BLACK
- The lowest voting participation rates can be attributed to BLACK people.
- The ones most dependent on government insitutions are BLACK people.
- The ones killing each other and bringing each other down are BLACK
- The most broken homes and family structures (due to the increased pregnancies (without marriage) and female headed households are BLACK
- The ones investing in consumerism (i.e., rims, jordans, etc) when they surely cant afford to are BLACK
With all of this knowledge, no wonder Uncle Ruckus feels ashamed of his race and that is a TRUTH that many of us wouldnt even own up to. Our race needs to wake up and look around them. These are things to be ashamed of. We need to find out who we are and where we have come from in order to take the steps to become a better race.
NO ONE CAN DISPUTE THE TRUTH

The New York Urban League just did a study here in NYC where they were trying to determine why Africa-Americans (not Caribbean-Americans) were so impoverished. They tried to find evidence of racial discrimination as a cause. What they found instead was that, for the most part, poor blacks found themselves impoverished as a result of their financial habits. Blacks were more likely to buy luxury items that they couldn’t afford, like high-end cars and clothing.

In response to # 38, although on the surface it seems as if Black people are at the bottom of the race hiearchy, you cannot deny the fact that Blacks have a history of racial oppression and segregation. The reason that most Blacks are poor is because they were relegated to low-wage jobs which did not require a lot of skill. There was also a lot of housing segregation going on in the seventies which made many Black children victims of the gangs, drugs, and other illicit activity. On top of that, Black children received a poor education which did not allow them to gain social mobility.
Although there is more opportunity to obtain “The American Dream”, Black people are trying to break through walls that have been closed for centuries. To make a list of what Black people don’t do without putting some of the blame on the institutions that have held us back is a disregard of historical evidence.

I am soooooooooo angry BET made it across the alantic to the UK. However I question why it made it over to the UK, there is a small market of people who enjoy BET, who enjoy watching these nonsensical reality shows and music videos which only serve to provide a negative image of the black community. I currently live in Austria, Vienna and occasionally watch MTV with my white flat mate who is from a small town in Austria. Most of the exposure she has had to black people is through television and ocassionally at university. She is actually quite surprised with me as she didnt expect me to speak so well and act differently to what she has seen on MTV. She is not an ignorant person, however she has been conditioned by the crap that is filtered through MTV. Shows like ‘I Love New York’ make me feel sick to my stomach and actually feel ashamed. There arent any other shows to counterbalance ‘I love New York’ or ‘Flava of Love’ therefore other races and cultures mostly believe what they see. And its not just MTV, the media is full of bull****. I am so skeptical of everything I see and read and always do my own research to get a wider picture. Sadly I do believe the media is responding to what people want to watch, and it is partly black people themselves who encourage this crap.
Boondocks is such a good animation (I loooooooooove manga) and has a strong message. I cant believe it is banned! It just goes to show the control the media has over what we watch…and to an extent control who we are…if we let it.

Unfortunately, this cartoon is reality. Living everyday as a black person can be daunting, mostly because after all this time we still dont have any since of unity, love, and progression that other cultures have when they come into this country.
I understand that blacks are targeted by the dominate culture to keep us restricted, however, if we learned to have stictuitiveness and organization amongst ourselves we would be able to conquer this bullshit.
Black people still dont love one another (black male, black female relationship is dead), we hate to one another prosper, we are jealous and conniving, always ready to join forces with other races to destroy one another, quick to belittle and berate.
I hate to say this but its unfortunate that slavery is over, because during those times at least we had some type of fight and collective unity. Now we think that the worst of history is behind us and we tolerate anything.
America is quick to tell blacks to get over our past and to move on, but certainly they don’t have the same advice for Jews. BLACK AMERICA WAKE UP AND START STICKING TOGETHER, WE HAVE TO MAKE THIS PLACE LIVABLE FOR OUR CHILDREN OR THEY WILL GROW UP IN A LAND OF SLAVERY JUST LIKE OR ANCESTORS.

The media assumes that most African Americans fit into a “once size fits all” category for t.v. viewing and can be patronized with most of the programming that is currently on television. One of the underlying issues here is that the media has for years been telling us what they think we should like, instead of giving the viewing population the credit to form their own opinions about what they wish to see portrayed in the media. Perfect case in point, the success of Tyler Perry’s empire. “Meet the Browns” opened with $20 million, with the majority of the ticket sales attributed to African-Americans that have loyally followed Tyler’s career through the years. Tyler’s success continues to completely baffle and dumbfound mainstream media, b/c mainstream media didn’t “clear him” first. In the case of Hollywood, you don’t matter until “they” clear you and determine that you matter. The media wants to tell us what to like and dislike, but in the case of Tyler Perry (I could come up with other examples also), we have told mainstream media what we like and what we choose to see. I realize that not everyone on this board is a staunch Tyler Perry fan, but he provides a great example of this concept.

@ 38 - thank you!
@45 - your point about some of these disparities being in other cultures and ethnic groups is true. that is a good point. however, the point is that these issues are being highlighted in this cartoon about black people. the points that uncle ruckus is talking about are about us! And we need to do something about it. I don’t know how old you may be, but back in the day BET used to not only provide the entertainment, but also took a stand in rebuilding the community with shows for young people’s improvement, news, health and awareness and insight into the lives of our favorite celebs. Now I’m not saying that in 2008 the same shows should still be on TV, yes BET needed to grow and evolve with its audience, but at the same time, there are already so many negative images (and unfortunately negative truths) about black people out there that it would take a race and self-hating person to engage in further enhancing those messages. It makes it even worse because it BET. We know that we do not own BET, but I can’t even force myself to watch the rounds of meaningless programs, constant booty-shaking, and thuggery. I will agree about College Hill. There is a lot of silliness and playing around, but i was glad to flip by one time (I think it may have been here in Chicago) and see housemates congratulating each other on working together on an advertising campaign or something. That I did like. We need more of that.

A lot of us know the stereotypes of Black people and since we’ve arrived in this country we were worried about what ‘masta” thought of us. I realized and got over this slave mentality. BET keep it going cause you’re doing what you’re doing…entertaining. Just because white folks entertainment ain’t like ours, don’t make ours wrong.
And I for one don’t need an ENTERTAINMENT television to tell me that my race consists of doctors, scientists, educators, lawyers and postive influences. I’m not that ignorant to know that. And if other races look to BET to generalize our race…sucks for them. Who cares what they think anyway?

I dislike bet as much as the next person but um #38
Yes well all this may be true and all but you have to realize black people have not been given the same chances that white ppl have for about the last 232 years since this country came to be. We definitely didn’t have the head start that white people did to be as prominent as they are today. There is no doubt that black people are not on the level as white people in so many things. But it isn’t fair to list them as if black people have been given the same chances and I’m not saying this is an excuse but it does play a major role as to why those things you listed are true. The only limit that we have are the ones we place on ourselves. Fortunately now we do have the same rights and we can use these rights to better our people and play catch-up because we are far from the level we need to be in but we have made great progress over the past 50 years.

Finally!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is the reason why I watch The Boondocks! Every black person should watch The Boondocks! I just hate how the network airs the episodes so late at night. Again, finally someone spoke up about BET. I cant stand BET. I dont even watch BET, anymore. I dont watch BET because the shows they show on there is JUNK, all of it is JUNK. Seriously!!!! Their shows such as COLLEGE HILL, COLLEGE HILL INTERNS (I dont know what was the point for that show), that new fight show with the IGNORANT rappers on there, that DMX reality show (which DMX was high the entire time filming), 106 & Park (with those two whack and corny host Rosci and that guy) and so on….. The shows they air on their network is JUNK…. Whatever happened to TEEN SUMMIT!!!! Teen Summit was a good show, it was a show about educating the public (WHAT WAS SO WRONG WITH THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) What happened to Free and AJ, I still havent heard the true story, its like a mystery!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 106 & Park with Free and AJ was GOOOOODDDD!!!! There personalities, chemistry, ethics, worked, they were a good team. I dont even waste my time on today’s 106 & Park.!!!!!! BET needs to get it together by NOT adding in with the sterotypes of black people. BET needs to be DIFFERENT. BET needs to think OUTSIDE the box!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If Iam ever asked to appear on the BET network I would say NO!!! Then I would tell them why I dont want to appear on BET, its either saying NO or them have me appear on one of there shows and me SPEAK THE TRUTH about BET and IGNORANCE! Thanks for always posting The Boondocks episodes, cause WE need to WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We leave our neighborhoods cause it’s too black, we don’t go to HBCU’s cause Black education ain’t good enough, and we complain about an entertainment network cause we cringe when we see Black people doing the same exact thing, if they aren’t worse, as the other entertainment networks do. Guess its done it’s job and is still in the works.
This “walking on eggshells” for whites is what Aaron McGruder needs to discuss, if he hasn’t already.

Do ya lil hyphy dance LoL… I’m from tha Bay so that was hilarious to me
This show is real funny but hard to watch…So much of it is true in so many ways. Black people do need to do better! Str8up. BET should get shut down. Some..maybe even mos whyte folk are still prejudice (notice the usage of prejudice and not racist). Look at it from all angles and not just the kill bET angle.
The comment about the HBCUs was hella uncalled for. CAU!

@61 - as i like to note, i respect everyone’s opinion on here. but, for me at least, your statement is not quite accurate. i live in a black neighborhood, went to an HBCU and i detest BET. Not because it shows black people “doing what I do” but because it’s an irresponsible depiction of all of the above. You are correct about the fact that white people and other groups shouldn’t depend on BET for their ideas about us, and further, it shouldn’t really matter what they think. But just like in the clip, it mentions, destroying the black youth. I don’t think BET single-handedly destroys the youth, but it does create an impression and there could be more positivity. That is why everyone continues to mention Teen Summit. It wasn’t all about talking about doctors and lawyers, etc… it was young black kids talking about what was going on in their lives, at school and at home and how to deal with it. There were also good entertainment segments too. But as society and moral values in general have slid, so has the quality of the programming on BET.

I think the most powerful part of the episode is when the Reggie Hudlin character was telling Ruckus the reason they show all the clowning and buffoonery is because it’s easy and because we allow it. If people were tired of the negative depictions of people of color on BET then they wouldn’t watch it. Networks are judged based on ratings and if they go down, they would be forced to develop better quality shows. I personally rarely watch BET, but keep TV One on heavy rotation. Stay Positive People.

Come on now. It’s highly satircal. If you didn’t know that now you do.
One comment though:
Yes black greeks have a specific culture that includes strolling, steppig and such, but many people join for the after college professional networking opportunities. Also white greeks might not step, but lord knows they DRINK & PARTY 10x more than and black greek org I know. And trust I know going to PWI where 66% of the white population is involved in greek life. They look at it completely differently. At least while they are in undergrad its purely social, which is def not the case for black greeks.

Correction ya’ll:
The new season of college hill defineitly shows them studying and going to the library every now and then, but seriously, negroes would be complaining about how boring the show was if that was all they showed. They tape 3 months of their lives and and edit out all of the non-confrontational moments, which is probably 85% of the material. So what you are seeing is an UBER exaggeration of the truth. Don’t blame the students because they are just living life like any other normal college student of any race, blame the editers and viewers.

All of you have a point to… but like what has already been said is that we have the option to turn off if we don’t like it. I can’t really comment on B.E.T being from the u.k but maybe it’s a case of black people making black people look bad! Any man, woman or child can watch the trash on be and not be affected if they have a well balanced upbringing, if your placed in front of the T.V with not additional input there will always be problems.
In the U.K black people on T.V is a sparse affair and we look to the imported shows to find entertainment, this can at points be detrimental as it tends to be the two dimensional person portrayed, as a man in my 30’s i have the option to read books by black authors, and hell, watch tyler perry movies. I used to read Vibe magazine but that went down the pan and removed it’s educational element many years ago.
There needs to be more inspirational people pushed forward in the media, at present we have fools like P. Diddy, 50 cent (to name a few) still acting like a 12 year old on T.V… Diddy ha children including 2 daughters….
The point is that we need to all do something together
