VIDEO: ANOTHER BANNED EPISODE OF ‘THE BOONDOCKS’

Monday, March 24, 2008

Here is the other banned episode of Aaron McGruder’s hit comic strip and television show The Boondocks. We posted the other last week, so if you missed it click here.

This episode features Uncle Ruckus, a self-hating black man (voiced by Gary Anthony Williams), getting his own offensive BET reality show.

In related news, the Cartoon Network has not acknowledged that the BET attacks were the reason for pulling the “Boondocks” episodes. All a spokesperson there would say is that Turner Cable was not contacted by BET, Lee or Hudlin.

HHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!
i can see why this episode was banned, because it was telling the truth. there are many uncle ruckus out there and it sad. on the other hand, i think some people put too much responsibilty on BET. yeah most of the shows are disgraceful but at the same time the people are lovin it. so ……..and this is just my opionion so don’t take personal…..but maybe we need to change our mindset on what we find entertaining. but back to BET. can y’all please stop calling “College Hill” College Hill call it for what it is THE BLACK REAL WORLD. them kids hardly say anything about studying, classes and dang you don’t even get a shot with in a classroom. i don’t even watch BET like i use to, now i only watch it when tthey have those deccent specials they be having. what it even worse is that they taking this international. but like i said before we can’t solely blame BET.

I am from Canada. 10 years ago, errbody around here was dreamin to have bet. When we had to go to the USA to see our family, we were ready with a tape to record all the shows or videos. OOOH the whole days. now Errbody got it cause of the satellite. And trust nobody around here watch bet on a regurlar basis. We only watch shows like “Hell date”, Sometimes “College hill” or awrds shows.

We Can’t stand 106 & park no mo. They always passing the same teeni boppers songs. I hate it. Rocsi gets on my last nerves. And that show “Bet now” y they passing old songs from year 2006 but it’s the same video’s ALL THE FREAK”N TIME. I dont believe that people are workin there. They must be on vacation 24/7.

I just watched it and honestly, I can’t even laugh at these banned episodes because I feel like beneath the over-the-top exaggerations, there may be a hint of truth.

I’m not one of those people who feel like BET should be banned outright. The reality is that they have a STRONG audience, and like any product or service, where there is demand there will always be supply. If they banned BET tomorrow, every Black blogger will start creating BET-like shows on YouTube and posting them on their sites.

I just hate there is there is NO balance. It’s cool to have a Black Entertainment Channel if you also have a Black EDUCATION Channel. I mean Jerry Springer can make a fool out of white people too because for every redneck white show, there are 10 sophisticated white networks and shows to counter them. In the case of BET, there is NONE.

BET on its own is counter-productive to the Black community. The answer is not to ban it. The answer is to ANSWER it.

Unfortunately, I do not have the resources to accomplish that feat on my own. And I believe those who have the resources do not have the “will” because otherwise it would have already been done.

lol that was hilarious. unfortunately, there are ppl who hate their own race. not only does ruckus represent those ppl, but he also represents those who know nothing about the race but think that whatever they see in the media is a good portrayal. that’s why BET is a problem. yes i used to watch it as a child (moderately though b/c my mother HATED the channel and didn’t want me watching it) and i came out great but there are kids that are watching this channel that think that in order to be black, they have to act a specific way and placing those types of limitations on ppl hurts in the end. i mean seriously BET is so one-dimensional. some ppl say “well BET doesn’t represent me” and they fail to realize that when the channel called itself BLACK entertainment channel, in other ppl’s eyes, it became a represention of BLACK ppl

# 7 you took the words out of my mouth. I have been saying for the longest time that “college hill” is the black real world. From the few episodes I saw I never saw any of those students going to class, studying for an exam, or involved in any of the school activities. They were either partying, drinking, fighting, or sleeping with each other smh. Anyways Aaron Mcguder is the man. He hit the nail on the head about BET. I’d like to see them improve their shows because a previous poster stated its like an eighth grader came up with the concepts. lol at firing AJ and Free because they made 106&Park successful (which I think holds some truth) and re-vitiligo. This episode was the truth.

This is one of the best adult cartoons out. I have felt this way about BET for the longest. That is why i call Cablevision to request better programming in the form of TVOne. Does not make any sense how BET can have such stupid content on a show an call it programming. To play videos and air unintelligent show is demeaning to all people of color. JESES Look at Telemundo, Galavision, Univision (hispanic network). They have been able to have better content then BET. Just a sad shame.

in our house we watch BET JAMS occationally. that’s suppose to be for adults. sure they have some good shows on there and show a variety of black entertainment from around the world. but there’s barely a budget it seems. shit come off real cheap and shows with promise doesn’t seem invested in. they show old BET Sunday reruns from back in the 90s and earlier. That’s just shitty how cheaply BET is funded.
We watch it to show to expose our daughter to musicians from African and the Carbbean and an occational African film. I’m glad they show that at least. No regular BET in this house because it’s just ass. I can’t raise a child to see herself as a person with a beautiful mind and a member of a beautiful people with regular BET.
Only thing my daughter will learn from that channel is that women are only worth a man sticking his dick in and nothing else. Just put in weave (never natural hair- always straight), wear little clothing, bend over and never use big words, a man will think you’re worth being called a baby’s momma. Don’t get me started on the underlying message of the superiority of the eauropean ideal of beauty that flows in the undercurrent… No I don’t want the channel to be all lectures from Morehouse. I’m just saying all aspects of black entertainment can be represented. I can have Kat Williams then have some news. Whatever happened to BET News anyhoo? While growing up I had NWA and I had Boogie Down Productions. I had the Vanitys and Pebbles as well as the MC Lytes and Queen Latifahs. You know what I’m saying?

EVERYONE IS MISSING THE REAL POINT OF THE SHOW.

Yes, the exploiter that is BET is part of it. But that is not even in the realm of what the producers are really trying to let us know.

The real issues were the ones that Uncle Ruckus was spouting, which is the waste of the African American race: Peep this and tell me if Im wrong.

- The biggest percentage of people in jail are BLACK
- The poorest people in the U.S. are BLACK
- The communities that are the most run down are BLACK
- The lowest in education (elementary, high school and college) are BLACK
- The lowest voting participation rates can be attributed to BLACK people.
- The ones most dependent on government insitutions are BLACK people.
- The ones killing each other and bringing each other down are BLACK
- The most broken homes and family structures (due to the increased pregnancies (without marriage) and female headed households are BLACK
- The ones investing in consumerism (i.e., rims, jordans, etc) when they surely cant afford to are BLACK

With all of this knowledge, no wonder Uncle Ruckus feels ashamed of his race and that is a TRUTH that many of us wouldnt even own up to. Our race needs to wake up and look around them. These are things to be ashamed of. We need to find out who we are and where we have come from in order to take the steps to become a better race.
NO ONE CAN DISPUTE THE TRUTH

The New York Urban League just did a study here in NYC where they were trying to determine why Africa-Americans (not Caribbean-Americans) were so impoverished. They tried to find evidence of racial discrimination as a cause. What they found instead was that, for the most part, poor blacks found themselves impoverished as a result of their financial habits. Blacks were more likely to buy luxury items that they couldn’t afford, like high-end cars and clothing.

In response to # 38, although on the surface it seems as if Black people are at the bottom of the race hiearchy, you cannot deny the fact that Blacks have a history of racial oppression and segregation. The reason that most Blacks are poor is because they were relegated to low-wage jobs which did not require a lot of skill. There was also a lot of housing segregation going on in the seventies which made many Black children victims of the gangs, drugs, and other illicit activity. On top of that, Black children received a poor education which did not allow them to gain social mobility.

Although there is more opportunity to obtain “The American Dream”, Black people are trying to break through walls that have been closed for centuries. To make a list of what Black people don’t do without putting some of the blame on the institutions that have held us back is a disregard of historical evidence.

I am soooooooooo angry BET made it across the alantic to the UK. However I question why it made it over to the UK, there is a small market of people who enjoy BET, who enjoy watching these nonsensical reality shows and music videos which only serve to provide a negative image of the black community. I currently live in Austria, Vienna and occasionally watch MTV with my white flat mate who is from a small town in Austria. Most of the exposure she has had to black people is through television and ocassionally at university. She is actually quite surprised with me as she didnt expect me to speak so well and act differently to what she has seen on MTV. She is not an ignorant person, however she has been conditioned by the crap that is filtered through MTV. Shows like ‘I Love New York’ make me feel sick to my stomach and actually feel ashamed. There arent any other shows to counterbalance ‘I love New York’ or ‘Flava of Love’ therefore other races and cultures mostly believe what they see. And its not just MTV, the media is full of bull****. I am so skeptical of everything I see and read and always do my own research to get a wider picture. Sadly I do believe the media is responding to what people want to watch, and it is partly black people themselves who encourage this crap.

Boondocks is such a good animation (I loooooooooove manga) and has a strong message. I cant believe it is banned! It just goes to show the control the media has over what we watch…and to an extent control who we are…if we let it.

Unfortunately, this cartoon is reality. Living everyday as a black person can be daunting, mostly because after all this time we still dont have any since of unity, love, and progression that other cultures have when they come into this country.

I understand that blacks are targeted by the dominate culture to keep us restricted, however, if we learned to have stictuitiveness and organization amongst ourselves we would be able to conquer this bullshit.

Black people still dont love one another (black male, black female relationship is dead), we hate to one another prosper, we are jealous and conniving, always ready to join forces with other races to destroy one another, quick to belittle and berate.

I hate to say this but its unfortunate that slavery is over, because during those times at least we had some type of fight and collective unity. Now we think that the worst of history is behind us and we tolerate anything.

America is quick to tell blacks to get over our past and to move on, but certainly they don’t have the same advice for Jews. BLACK AMERICA WAKE UP AND START STICKING TOGETHER, WE HAVE TO MAKE THIS PLACE LIVABLE FOR OUR CHILDREN OR THEY WILL GROW UP IN A LAND OF SLAVERY JUST LIKE OR ANCESTORS.

DH

The media assumes that most African Americans fit into a “once size fits all” category for t.v. viewing and can be patronized with most of the programming that is currently on television. One of the underlying issues here is that the media has for years been telling us what they think we should like, instead of giving the viewing population the credit to form their own opinions about what they wish to see portrayed in the media. Perfect case in point, the success of Tyler Perry’s empire. “Meet the Browns” opened with $20 million, with the majority of the ticket sales attributed to African-Americans that have loyally followed Tyler’s career through the years. Tyler’s success continues to completely baffle and dumbfound mainstream media, b/c mainstream media didn’t “clear him” first. In the case of Hollywood, you don’t matter until “they” clear you and determine that you matter. The media wants to tell us what to like and dislike, but in the case of Tyler Perry (I could come up with other examples also), we have told mainstream media what we like and what we choose to see. I realize that not everyone on this board is a staunch Tyler Perry fan, but he provides a great example of this concept.

@ 38 - thank you!
@45 - your point about some of these disparities being in other cultures and ethnic groups is true. that is a good point. however, the point is that these issues are being highlighted in this cartoon about black people. the points that uncle ruckus is talking about are about us! And we need to do something about it. I don’t know how old you may be, but back in the day BET used to not only provide the entertainment, but also took a stand in rebuilding the community with shows for young people’s improvement, news, health and awareness and insight into the lives of our favorite celebs. Now I’m not saying that in 2008 the same shows should still be on TV, yes BET needed to grow and evolve with its audience, but at the same time, there are already so many negative images (and unfortunately negative truths) about black people out there that it would take a race and self-hating person to engage in further enhancing those messages. It makes it even worse because it BET. We know that we do not own BET, but I can’t even force myself to watch the rounds of meaningless programs, constant booty-shaking, and thuggery. I will agree about College Hill. There is a lot of silliness and playing around, but i was glad to flip by one time (I think it may have been here in Chicago) and see housemates congratulating each other on working together on an advertising campaign or something. That I did like. We need more of that.

A lot of us know the stereotypes of Black people and since we’ve arrived in this country we were worried about what ‘masta” thought of us. I realized and got over this slave mentality. BET keep it going cause you’re doing what you’re doing…entertaining. Just because white folks entertainment ain’t like ours, don’t make ours wrong.

And I for one don’t need an ENTERTAINMENT television to tell me that my race consists of doctors, scientists, educators, lawyers and postive influences. I’m not that ignorant to know that. And if other races look to BET to generalize our race…sucks for them. Who cares what they think anyway?

I dislike bet as much as the next person but um #38

Yes well all this may be true and all but you have to realize black people have not been given the same chances that white ppl have for about the last 232 years since this country came to be. We definitely didn’t have the head start that white people did to be as prominent as they are today. There is no doubt that black people are not on the level as white people in so many things. But it isn’t fair to list them as if black people have been given the same chances and I’m not saying this is an excuse but it does play a major role as to why those things you listed are true. The only limit that we have are the ones we place on ourselves. Fortunately now we do have the same rights and we can use these rights to better our people and play catch-up because we are far from the level we need to be in but we have made great progress over the past 50 years.

Finally!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is the reason why I watch The Boondocks! Every black person should watch The Boondocks! I just hate how the network airs the episodes so late at night. Again, finally someone spoke up about BET. I cant stand BET. I dont even watch BET, anymore. I dont watch BET because the shows they show on there is JUNK, all of it is JUNK. Seriously!!!! Their shows such as COLLEGE HILL, COLLEGE HILL INTERNS (I dont know what was the point for that show), that new fight show with the IGNORANT rappers on there, that DMX reality show (which DMX was high the entire time filming), 106 & Park (with those two whack and corny host Rosci and that guy) and so on….. The shows they air on their network is JUNK…. Whatever happened to TEEN SUMMIT!!!! Teen Summit was a good show, it was a show about educating the public (WHAT WAS SO WRONG WITH THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) What happened to Free and AJ, I still havent heard the true story, its like a mystery!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 106 & Park with Free and AJ was GOOOOODDDD!!!! There personalities, chemistry, ethics, worked, they were a good team. I dont even waste my time on today’s 106 & Park.!!!!!! BET needs to get it together by NOT adding in with the sterotypes of black people. BET needs to be DIFFERENT. BET needs to think OUTSIDE the box!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If Iam ever asked to appear on the BET network I would say NO!!! Then I would tell them why I dont want to appear on BET, its either saying NO or them have me appear on one of there shows and me SPEAK THE TRUTH about BET and IGNORANCE! Thanks for always posting The Boondocks episodes, cause WE need to WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lol…it’s funny cause this is exactly what “Willie Lynch” warranted.

We leave our neighborhoods cause it’s too black, we don’t go to HBCU’s cause Black education ain’t good enough, and we complain about an entertainment network cause we cringe when we see Black people doing the same exact thing, if they aren’t worse, as the other entertainment networks do. Guess its done it’s job and is still in the works.

This “walking on eggshells” for whites is what Aaron McGruder needs to discuss, if he hasn’t already.

Some..maybe even mos whyte folk are still prejudice (notice the usage of prejudice and not racist). Look at it from all angles and not just the kill bET angle.

@61 - as i like to note, i respect everyone’s opinion on here. but, for me at least, your statement is not quite accurate. i live in a black neighborhood, went to an HBCU and i detest BET. Not because it shows black people “doing what I do” but because it’s an irresponsible depiction of all of the above. You are correct about the fact that white people and other groups shouldn’t depend on BET for their ideas about us, and further, it shouldn’t really matter what they think. But just like in the clip, it mentions, destroying the black youth. I don’t think BET single-handedly destroys the youth, but it does create an impression and there could be more positivity. That is why everyone continues to mention Teen Summit. It wasn’t all about talking about doctors and lawyers, etc… it was young black kids talking about what was going on in their lives, at school and at home and how to deal with it. There were also good entertainment segments too. But as society and moral values in general have slid, so has the quality of the programming on BET.

Question Everything

Monday, March 24, 2008 /

I think the most powerful part of the episode is when the Reggie Hudlin character was telling Ruckus the reason they show all the clowning and buffoonery is because it’s easy and because we allow it. If people were tired of the negative depictions of people of color on BET then they wouldn’t watch it. Networks are judged based on ratings and if they go down, they would be forced to develop better quality shows. I personally rarely watch BET, but keep TV One on heavy rotation. Stay Positive People.

One comment though:
Yes black greeks have a specific culture that includes strolling, steppig and such, but many people join for the after college professional networking opportunities. Also white greeks might not step, but lord knows they DRINK & PARTY 10x more than and black greek org I know. And trust I know going to PWI where 66% of the white population is involved in greek life. They look at it completely differently. At least while they are in undergrad its purely social, which is def not the case for black greeks.

Correction ya’ll:

The new season of college hill defineitly shows them studying and going to the library every now and then, but seriously, negroes would be complaining about how boring the show was if that was all they showed. They tape 3 months of their lives and and edit out all of the non-confrontational moments, which is probably 85% of the material. So what you are seeing is an UBER exaggeration of the truth. Don’t blame the students because they are just living life like any other normal college student of any race, blame the editers and viewers.

All of you have a point to… but like what has already been said is that we have the option to turn off if we don’t like it. I can’t really comment on B.E.T being from the u.k but maybe it’s a case of black people making black people look bad! Any man, woman or child can watch the trash on be and not be affected if they have a well balanced upbringing, if your placed in front of the T.V with not additional input there will always be problems.

In the U.K black people on T.V is a sparse affair and we look to the imported shows to find entertainment, this can at points be detrimental as it tends to be the two dimensional person portrayed, as a man in my 30’s i have the option to read books by black authors, and hell, watch tyler perry movies. I used to read Vibe magazine but that went down the pan and removed it’s educational element many years ago.
There needs to be more inspirational people pushed forward in the media, at present we have fools like P. Diddy, 50 cent (to name a few) still acting like a 12 year old on T.V… Diddy ha children including 2 daughters….
The point is that we need to all do something together

I love the boondocks for bringing to attention how bad BET is. There is like nothing positive for our people up there besides for maybe on Sunday mornings I personally only watch the channel when their showing old t.v. shows like the Wayans Bros. and maybe the award shows and occasionally the music videos on in the afternoon when Im bored and not in class but besides for that BET just sucks I don’t think the answer really is taking the channel off the air b/c I don’t think that will happen but I do think that if the black community some how starts some kind of boycott and stops watching the channel and writing in complaining about the programs they show it might be possible to get more quality programming on.

Here’s some of the reasons I haven’t been a fan of BET for many years. I don’t expect a channel to be the end all and I don’t care what the “white phantom collective” think of me (honestly that phobia wrecks my nerves).

Never recognizes LGBT in the black community as a positive force instead of constant so called ‘down low’ phenominon.

Thinks all Blacks are Christian. If Sunday is religion show day, show other religions too. We don’t all believe in “send cash, recieve miracles.”

Never show videos of black rockers, jazz, electronica etc.

Not much representing of the Black diaspora. Like Rap City can show rappers from other countries too. Music isn’t limited by language.

No real fashion shows. And no hons, logos printed on t shirts isn’t fashion.

Keep cancelling the BET News

Never giving real time to the issues. Like that Hip Hop vs. America wasn’t given enough time. Could have been something IF they took the time.

Still pushing that Pimps up, Hoes down attitude.

I won’t say shut BET down. They aren’t the only ones pushing the stereotypes. They could be better. They all could. You can always turn the television off. You are not obligated to sit in front of the screen. Your time and dollars can be used on books, savings accounts, IRAS, your family and preparing healthy meals.

But like dude said in the cartoon. You could do better, but doing less is easier.

@#57…I have to give it up to you, I waited to see who would comment that entertainment is not where one would or should for that matter look to see the positive influence many and I repeat many blacks contribute daily to society.
My grandfather reminds me everyday that as little as 38 years ago blacks were still treated like slaves by law in the US (Jim Crow). I stood in Iraq and listened intently as political advisors and the the president himself stated that the Iraqi people should see a change within their thinking in no less than 60 years.

“BET keep it going cause you’re doing what you’re doing…entertaining. Just because white folks entertainment ain’t like ours, don’t make ours wrong.”

@megan:
i didn’t know that you could pinpoint black entertainment and white entertainment. tell me what does black entertainment consist of? i mean most of the ppl on this site are black and most of them don’t find BET entertaining at all. neither do i. please tell me b/c it seems that BET is only “entertaining” a specific PORTION of the black community (and a specific portion of the white/latino/asian population). where is the diversity on the channel? this is what i’m saying about the limits placed on black ppl. i love all types of music but i can’t even turn on BEt and watch different types of music. in order to do that i would have to watch MTV or some other (mostly white) channel b/c they actually show diversity in music. i’ve never even seen a fefe dobson video on BET. i may not be a huge fan of hers but i thought the pt. of BET was to give a voice to black entertainers, to allow black viewers to see ppl who look like them instead of being bombarded with white ppl’s stereotypes of how we’re supposed to be. i don’t like the whole booty-shaking thing but some do so i’m not going to say take all that out BUT can we also have a different side? can we have some diversity on our own channel? do you think it’s fair that BET only caters to a certain part of the black population? say what you want but we are still allowing white ppl to bring us down. they own most of TV yet we got one channel and this channel only pertains to a certain % of black ppl. are the rest of us not important enough? and drop the whole “you care too much about what white ppl think blah blah” act b/c from your pic, i’m guessing that you relax your hair. that’s not exactly a stand against “massa” so stop trying to act like ppl who criticize BET are slaves to “massa”

Man, slave master and Jim Crow supporters are laughing in their graves right now.

We get an ENTERTAINMENT television station for us and we are trying to shut it down because we can’t stand to see Blacks be human because we are conscience about what they think instead of focusing on what we already know. But we don’t have anything to say about those white stations, MTV, Vh1, Fox News, and our local news stations who make us look worse. Wow. But then again I ask, why are we worried about what “others” think of us when WE in fact know the opposite? Everyone is intitled to their opinions, but knowing and studying the history is reading some of the comments in correlation is hilarious to me.

@ Big Von, SouthSide Chicago right here baby - and i still hate BET. It’s the one channel we’ve got and should show that we are not all the same and even if it was just based on entertainment, we’re not all entertained by the same ish. Again, I don’t think shutting it down is the solutionn, not at all. But just like a large portion of other disparities in our community (economy, education, family) it should be recognized as a problem and people need to come together to create a solution. And I’m glad many of the shows deemed as “non-snoozers” were also cancelled. Aww and don’t be offended by the word thuggery - while it certainly doesn’t encapsulate all of the videos, there are many that it does apply to. As well as the mysogony, homophobia, and economic irresponsibility. Don’t put words in anybody’s mouth talking about “just because a dude wear baggy pants.” Gangsta and thuggery is not defined by the clothes you wear. You should know that SouthSide come on!

Yes, we can turn off the television, but BET has a certain responsibilty particularly because it has labeled itself *Black* entertainment television. Secondly, I have to say that the person that listed all the negative attributes of Black people needs a history lesson and needs to understand what systemic racism and discrimination has meant for Black people, who despite it all have survived and flourished. Let me deconstruct his/her IGNORANT comments systemacally:

- “The biggest percentage of people in jail are BLACK” - While this is true, blacks are disproportionately imprisoned for crimes. Our faulty justice system largely leaves unpunished white people who commits crimes and at times, reinvents what is considered criminal in order to maintain these disproportionate numbers. Blacks represent that largest percentage of men freed due to DNA studies, but of course, you don’t mention that.
- “The poorest people in the U.S. are BLACK” - Actually the poorest people in the U.S. are native americans who live in among the poorest and most deplorable regions of the country. It’s ridiculous and unacceptable!
- “The communities that are the most run down are BLACK” - This is a blanket statement that is not based on any data, but I’ll entertain your ignorance briefly. Understanding the physical differences that may be observed in SOME Black communities has a lot to do with predator lending, unfair mortgage rates, “white flight” and lack of city investment in infrastructure and neighborhood improvement.
- “The lowest in education (elementary, high school and college) are BLACK”- Actually the most educated population in the U.S and the U.K. are African immigrants who are, of course, black. Despite DECADES of past and continued discrimination, Black folks are entering college at unprecedented rates. Its not surprise that our gains in college education surpass the gains of whites.
- “The lowest voting participation rates can be attributed to BLACK people”. - False, but Blacks are very critical of the American political system and are aware of the contradictions of having a democracy without offering diverse candidates. As this election shows, when Blacks feel as though there is a viable candidate they will vote.
- “The ones most dependent on government insitutions are BLACK people.” - Ok, this statement is so general its virtually meaningless. But if you’re talking about welfare, which is a stereotype that people associate with Blacks, you might be surprised to know that whites compose the largest proportion of people on welfare in the U.S.
- “The ones killing each other and bringing each other down are BLACK”- Generalization and again baseless. White people and black people kill people. The mass murders at malls, elementary schools, “suburban shootings”, gang violence, and murders at educational institutions reflect the diversity of criminals.
- “The most broken homes and family structures (due to the increased pregnancies (without marriage) and female headed households are BLACK”- You are correct that Black families are much more likely to be female-headed. However, the Black family is distinguished by its extended networks and dependence on numerous family members to make things work. You speak nothing about the lack of adequate sex education and lack of affordable contraceptives. You also ignore the difficulties that Black men face in trying to provide for a family in a society that makes it difficult to make a livable wage.
- “The ones investing in consumerism (i.e., rims, jordans, etc) when they surely cant afford to are BLACK”. Actually, ALL Americans invest in consumerism. This explains why Americans, at the moment, we are in an era where family debt is pervasive among all groups. Blacks aren’t not exempt from these types of lavish spending habits. While Blacks may be more likely to invest in specific “luxury” items, whites, latinos and asians also have distinctive spending habits as well.

All of this to say, people let’s read up on our own history so that we understand the COMPLEXITIES of the problems facing our communities. Its not just about Black people watching tv and spending money, we need to understand systemic issues. While I’ve addressed some of the structural issues that people often don’t consider, its important that YOU read for yourself. Don’t depend on me or Concreteloop to inform you about the things that are important to you.

I love being Black, I’m proud of my heritage and I’m also knowledgeable about where we’ve been and optimistic about where we’re going!

Oh ok, one more thing black relationships are not dead. Stop writing and saying this! I’m married…to a black man and at least 90% of ALL married Blacks are married to another Black. We do have relationship, social, political, psychological and economic issues, but let’s keep the big picture at hand. We’ve made gains, we’ve got ways to go and we need to demand better from ourselves and our government.

Ok, I’ll get off my soapbox now.

People forget 2 realise that the black community has only been recognised as full equal citizens of the United States for as little as 50 years!!! If you look back in history when white ppl started to immigrate to this country, they exhibited the same if not worse behaviour than what we do now. i.e. Scots-Irish Rednecks etc. White people have had 200 years to overcome their problems while black people have only had about 50 and have already come far further than white people in the same time period

I haven’t watched BET in years, but a lot of people do. The negative images are overwhelming. That episode was extremely difficult to watch. I was thinking somebody should send it to Pat Robertson, Sean Hannity, Limbaugh and the rest of those ‘crackers’ [lol], but they might not get it. It wasn’t just the self-hatred because Ruckus was just one man. The callousness of the BET executives, spouting their degrees, enjoying being hateful and intentionally seeking to destroy the minds of children that really hurt. It was a satire, but it just rang so true that is frightening. Just like Huey and Riley didn’t see the truck set up to run them down when they were just minding their business crossing the street, I how I see a lot of us. We’re being set up to get run over and don’t even know it.

For Megan & Big Von, I see what you are trying to say, but using this episode and all the thoughts being written on here are not the way to go. Yes there are many blacks who are so concerned with whites think of them they are willing to change who they are in order to fit that mold. But saying BET is undeserving of all the criticism they receive is absurd. Plain and simple, BET is the 1 of the only networks we have, yet all the depictions are the same, with the exception of the tired re-runs they show. For example take a look at Telemundo or Univision, they have everything from soap operas to talk-shows to sitcoms. And while they are for entertainment value, they depict various aspects of Hispanic entertainment and culture. Yet BET’s line-up consists of Hell Date, ComicView (which has not been funny in years), College Hill (if they would just change the name to black real world, ppl would stop tripping instead of them lying and acting like they actually show these kids going to school) 106th & Crap, and some videos. MTV stands for MusicTelevision, yet they feature political debates, highlight new musical artists, and have series that show the lives of people all over the world (True Life, etc.). I’m not saying shut BET down, but the people, the consumers need to let BET know (via voicing their concerns, or just not watching it) they need to be smarter in their programming choices and feature different aspects of black life.

To Megan specifically, your comment about not having to see doctors and lawyers to know they exist, while that’s great for you, what about other blacks who are not as enlightened as you, they are merely being exposed to half-naked girls, and rappers and singers who cannot form a complete sentence. And don’t run that nonsense about it being all about entertainment because plain and simple BET is supposedly the only network that is supposed to be about all things black. Therefore they DO need to feature elements that enhance their black audience as opposed to degrading it…

“Man, slave master and Jim Crow supporters are laughing in their graves right now.

Everyone is intitled to their opinions, but knowing and studying the history is reading some of the comments in correlation is hilarious to me.”

This comment is frightening to me because to say that Rap City shows blacks being human is absurd. No, it shows 1 side of our culture that is demeaning and emphasizes all the negatives people have fought (and continue to fight) against. The fact of the matter is there are so many negative stereotypes about blacks and I don’t know what wide, open-minded community you come from, but what 1 does reflects on all of us. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been places and white people are appalled that my name is Courtney and not ShaTashia or something. Or they see me and just know I have a bad-attitude, 3 kids, a boyfriend in jail and no education. And why? Because they have seen other black women who are just like that, and the potrayals of us in movies, music, tv and other mediums reflect that. Yet here on our “own” network as opposed to showing another side, BET feeds right into it all “others” think we are: loud-mouthed, booty-shaking, fighting, uneducated buffoons who would rather watch television while eating KFC than do something constructive. The fact is what “others” think of us, along with the images we project have the power to open or close a door, dispel or challenge myths and stereotypes, or divide or unify people.

To Big Von:

For someone who does not know me, you make quite a few generalizations about who you THINK I am (hmm, sound familiar?) First off, I am a BIG fan of hip-hop, yet that does not mean I have to like the videos most rappers put out. All I’m saying is the concept of hoes shaking ass, and cars with shiny rims is not only demeaning to who we are, its played. Secondly I never once referred to BET’s “good ‘ole days” and Donnie whoever, I’m 19 years old sweetheart, and you say I’m out of touch. Then to say that I’m bougy (I believe you mean bourgeois)? Why, because I would rather my own people portray positive images instead of feeding into the machine which beleieves there is nothing positve about us. Sweetheart this is Milwaukee streets talking to you. Do some research of your own. And indeed your missing my point, if you would have read what I said you would have clearly seen that I said shutting down BET is not the answer, but they should be smarter in their programming choices.

And stop trying to prove your point via typing in all caps, it actually lessens your argument and makes you seem like a 14 year old trying to participate in a grown-up conversation. Thanks!

@BIGVON AND MEGAN (AND THE LIKE) . . .YOU ARE THE ONE’S WHO DO NOT GET THE POINT OF THIS EPISODE OF THE BOONDOCKS. BET WAS (AND THE OPERATIVE WORD IS - WAS) A SHOW THAT CATERED TO THE BLACK COMMUNITTY. THEY USED TO OFFER A VARIETY OF SHOWS THAT SHOWED BLACK PEOPLE IN ALL OF OUR REGUARDS. THEY HAD RAP CITY. VIDEO SOUL, TEEN SUMMIT, CARRIBIAN RYTHYMS, BET NEWS. AND THE HOSTS OF THOSE SHOWS WERE WELL QUALIFIED AND WELL VERSED IN THE SHOWS THAT THEY WERE HOSTING. . . BUT NOW SINCE VIACOM TOOK OVER ( THE WHITE MAN) THEY ARE USING A POISONUS FORMULA BECAUSE THEY ARE ONLY OUT TO MAKE MONEY. THEY THINK WE AREN’T INTELLIGENT, THEREFORE WE DON’T NEED INTELLIGENT PROGRAMING. (I WOUNDER WHY YOU GUYS ARE SO ATTRACTED TO THE NETWORK? HMM . . .MAKES ME THINK) . . .ANYWAY. VH1 SOUL SHOWCASES MORE “GOOD” BLACK ARTIST THAN BET., THOSE ARTISTS WOULD NEVER GET ANY SHINE ON BET BECAUSE THEY DON’T HAVE BODY PARTS HANGING ALL OUT, OR FIGHTING, OR CURSING EVERY OTHER WORD. YALL NEED TO CHECK YOURSELVES. YOU ARE THE ONES WITH SELF HATRED BECAUSE YOU GUYS ARE SO THIRTSY AND HUNGRY FOR THE SLIM PICKINS’ THAT MASSA THROWS AT YA. . .MMM HUMMMM. . .YESSA MASSA, I’LL WATCH WHATEVA YA WANT’S ME TO SUH, ALL THAT CUSSIN SOUND GOODS TO ME SUH . . . THEM BLACK WENCHES SHOWIN ALL THEY ASSES SUH, MMM HMMM. . . YOU MAKES ALL THE MONEY ON THE DOWNFALLS OF OUR PEOPLES MASSA (LAWDY LAWDY) !!!!!

Regina King plays the voices of Huey and Riley Freeman

I heard a real like “Uncle Rukus” on the radio. He lives in Mississippi and he said that when he was young that he flirted with a white the girl and some the girls white guy friends tied him to a tree and beat him with a belt and knocked out some of his teeth and the guy said that he didn’t think that that was racially motivated. I wanna know what ya’ll think about that I think that this happened in the 50’s not sure though.

You’re 26 and this is how you prove your point…well taken. And what you addressed was both me and my comment. If you would express yourself articulately as opposed to a 14 year-old-girl in a chatroom maybe I’d listen, elder, until then “We don’t believe you, you need more people.”

Let me tell ya’ll something. This episode was probably not really “banned”. Knowing Aaron McGruder’s satire sense of humor, this was probably a joke in and out itself, how an episode bashing BET had to be taken down. He did a similar joke in the comic strip.

This shit hit it right on the head….. people afraid to say it but you know it is how we are perceived ….. unfortunately.
Just look at the kind of crap (we) struggle to get on tv…. Flav O Flav and his magnificently dumb “bitches” oh wait im sorry its not that we struggle to put it on … its just that (some) really fucked up producers are willing to put it on as long as it
a) depicts black men as senseless fools
b) exploits black women as dumb ass ignorant money grubbing whores of Ho’s
c) makes sure that the camera is regularly on black folks that massacre the English language
d) portrays blacks as cold unfeeling and purely superficial mindless fools.

Its almost as if Martin Luther King never existed and the shit that is rammed down our throat and crammed into our heads was part of our birthright.

Daytime tv is no better….. who’s my babies daddy

i dont thinnk BET is a bad network, altho there are many shows that i am not interested in. I also dont believe that I am being portrayed in an obscure way bc of some of the shows that are on that network…we as ppl period need to stop blaming others actions in order to create an excuse as to why ppl think of blk ppl or any other race the way that they do..ppl who put all blk ppl in a certain category bc of what they saw someone do or an experience they had with a certain person, is a fool bc every blk person doesnt represent me..i represent myself..be you regardless
