VIDEO: banned “The Boondocks” episode satirizing BET
Wednesday, March 19, 2008
One of the banned episodes of Aaron McGruder’s hit comic strip and television show The Boondocks has been released on the net. Make sure you peep it above.
The episode entitled “The Huey Freeman Hunger Strike”, depicts BET’s CEO, Debra Lee, as “Debra Lee-vil,” a sinister Dr. Evil clone who kills underlings and rants about creating a network “that would accomplish what hundreds of years of slavery, Jim Crow and malt liquor couldn’t - the destruction of black people.”
In related news, a Canadian network will be airing another banned episode this Sunday. According to a report, the episode (also in protest of BET) shows Uncle Ruckus, a self-hating black man (voiced by Gary Anthony Williams), getting his own offensive BET reality show. [READ MORE]

LOL. THAT WAS SO FUNNY, BUT THEIR RIGHT BECAUSE ALL BET DOES IT TAKE THE SAME SHOWS FROM OTHER NETWORKS AND STICK BLACK PEOPLE IN THEM AND THEY CALL IT ORIGINAL. I FEEL SORRY FOR BET BECAUSE THEY HAVE NOTHING CREATIVE TO DO. ALL THE GOOD SHOWS THAT CAME ON BET WERE IN THE 90′S WHICH THEY CANCELED LIKE “TEEN SUMMIT”, “HITS FROM THE STREETS:, AND “CITA’S WORLD”. GET WITH IT BET. GET RID OF WACK ROSCI AND TERRENCE, HIRE SOME MORE CREATIVE FOLKS BECAUSE YALL NEED A TOTAL MAKEOVER!

I dont think its a bad idea to ban everything on bet…
but what happened to shows like teen summit?
why arent they doing the rap-it up campaign anymore?
why arent the youth being alarmed about the presidential election and why their vote matters?
gospel sunday is good, but its not enough
VH1 and MTV makes a mockery of all races, but what is shown by our race on this network is what the world believes that all black people act like.
Black Entertainment Television - perhaps you should have shows that will entertain black people.
Got to admit that I do watch College Hill, but it would be interesting to know that those students go to school sometimes…

What is so amazing is that so many people on ths post, know this already, they comment and tap into this pop cultue comment and get enmotionally involved in these celebrity lives and crazy lifestyles. And yet some will never appreciate and understand that BET is OWNED by VIACOM who own MTV and VH1 they are slowly conditioning and influencing young minds and dumbed down adults. Why was this banned if Americsa has free speech. THNK ABOUT IT!?!?!
Lets pray Concreteloop holds out and does not sell out like Myspace or Facebook or Perezhilton to the corporate BEASTS

BET does suck. Cita’s World was good. I dont watch BET unless something interesting is coming on. Its bad enough they got Rocsi and Julissa on there I’m not trying to be racists but they do have Mun2 for them. I wanna see people who look like me on tv. I mean the hispanic people have like 1o tv stations on basic tv.

Favorite channel of ignant, stagnant black minds and the Klan alike! Bet the Klan has BBQ’s with full roasted piggy and bonus BET viewing beer busts!
Sorry to be so rough, but that’s how much I truly despise what that station stands for.
Now if we would only stop giving one of the biggest perpetuators of modern black minstrelry a pass and go after mufuhkin’ VH1.

That link didn’t work, but here’s what was posted in Wikipedia:
Cita’s World was a video music show that aired on Black Entertainment Television (BET) in the United States. It was the first show to feature a virtual reality black stereotypical character as the hostess named Cita. It was co-developed, produced and sometimes written by Tracye Z. Kinzer. The show ran from 2000 to 2002 in television. Thank goodness this show was canceled because it degrated the image of black people with this Cita character speaking in ebonics with her vocal set at loud. It was humiliating to watch black stereotype at it’s worst; before the Source Awards. The show was originally named Jam Zone when it was created in 1997, which was just a wall paper video show until 1999 when Cita emerged into the homes of millions.
In between videos, Cita would “talk” to the viewers, answer viewer mail and offer her unadulterated opinions on current events, celebritiies and more. The voice and motion of the Cita character was performed by Kittie. From Washington, DC to New York City and lastly Hollywood, Ca., the shows content came from producer Tracye Kinzer who assigned her writers Cliff McBean, Monica “Monie Mon” Dyson and Angela Yarborough topics to create great entertainment.
The show received heavy criticism from the Black community, mainly because of Cita’s controversial presentation. However, after three successful years, the show was cancelled in 2002.

Poor BET they totally suck now. Why do they take old shows and re-run them. Who the hell watched Malcom and Eddie when it first came out. I love Jamie Fox but his show is wack now. Why don’t they pickup Girlfriends, comicview was even good at one point. And that celebrity fight club thing is going no where. How bout creating new black sitcoms. Its just awful.

i just got finished watching and first of all how they depicted Lee-vil was genious. And how she kept saying “blllack peopllle”. but seriously this is something that should not be swept under the rug. as others have mentioned, what happened to those more positive shows? BET used to be great with the teen summit and the caribbean “riddims” and Donnie Simpson with the live interviews. That used to be the best. Not to mention - THE NEWS! Gee whiz - who takes off daily news? I swear it’s such an embarassment. And then we had that lovely stretch of 5 or 6 years of the porn at 2 or 3 in the morning. that was just great. anyway, this is clearly going to take a huge movement since it is not owned by black people. i don’t know who owns TV One, but I’ll stick to that for now and watch my Good Times reruns.

I think it paints a bad representation on our culture and our lives. example…College Hill.. have we ever seen these kats in class or talking about college or anything? Not only does bet suck but I am tired of all the other networks with their token black, hispanic or asian person. I told my friends I wanted to file a lawsuit against tv networks for discrimination. They force these white shows on us with no black actors or any other race for that matter fooling people into thinking that white people are the only ones who can make #1 shows. Look what they did to Girlfriends. They would not have happened to Friends.

Wow Aaron MacGruder!!!
The sad part about BET to me is that while we (blacks) owned it we had a chance to make it something powerful and special. A tool to create and project positive non-stereotypical images of black people for the world to see. But we turn right around and complain because their aren’t enough positive black images on t.v. Every year the NAACP and other black organizations whine and complain to Hollywood execs that there aren’t enough of us on t.v. We leave it up to UPN to be the official “black network” full of comedies.
But as Bob Johnson said, “he is not the savior of the black race. he’s a businessman and his job is to make a profit.” It’s funny how white people manage to make a profit and protect/control their images of their people at the same time. Hmmmm. Funny.

Figures we (Canadians) would air it. We air so many things I’ve never seen on US TV, our censorship laws are kinda relaxed I suppose. We’re all the way up to the word “shit” on prime-time TV, which surprised the hell outta me when i kept hearing it.
Anyway, I wonder what powers played a hand in banning this honestly. Does BET have that much power? I guess it being owned by Viacom gives it that power. BET has it’s good and bad; like I won’t lie I watch a lil hell date lol.
But it’s MOSTLY bad, somebody mentioned Teen Summit…which I can’t figure out for the LIFE of me why that was canceled! They just make all the wrong moves
Ever since I read that article where they wouldn’t air a Little Brother video because they flat-out SAID it was too INTELLIGENT for their audience, yeah….not a good look.

I thought i was the only one who noticed that BET takes all of MTV shows and make them black
I would like BET to provide what this site provides: a mixture of celebrity news, politics, fashion and some kind of connection with thier audience
BET only caters to thier young viewers instead of providing entertainment that everyone can enjoy

i agree with everything you guys are saying but let’s cut them a little
(and i mean little) slack they do every once in a while do positive things for the black community. Not to long ago they did a specials on HIV/AIDS,racial tension in southern california, and the darfur tragedies. i agree that they do contradict themselves. one minute they say that black people are portrayed in a negative light then turn around and have shows like college hill which only brightens that negative light that we fall under. on the other (and i’m not trying to start any arguments with no one but i need to get this off my chest so don’t take it personally) can’t you see you helping BET. i mean alot of you said you liked Cita’s World!!!!!!! I mean come on she was one of the biggest stereotyped characters BET ever had!!!!!!!! Loud,GHETTO, and, UNEDUCATED. Some of you say you like College Hill. All they do is fight, cuss and sleep around with each other. If It wasn’t called College Hill who would know that they were in college…………whew….. now i feel better LOL LOL…………again i’m not trying to make anybody mad but if you don’t like what you see simply change the channel……if enough of us do it they’ll get the message and change i betcha.

You know what? The weird thing about BET is that they completely dug their own graves. I remember watching an interview that someone did with Deborah Lee years ago when Bob Johnson was still there. They were asking her about original programming, and she adamantly stated that BET would not be producing original sitcoms, etc. I was probably in high school then, and seeing that I said to myself “Why?” What network in their right mind would not want to grow their audience by producing original programming? I am the type of person that tries to reason things out and make things make sense, so I figured that BET was unable to afford to produce original programming. That was until they fired Tavis & sold the company to Viacom for 2 or 3 billion dollars. When I read the press release, I remember saying, “I had no idea that BET was worth that much”, and I don’t think anyone else did either. So, in essence, even though the funds were there, BET just flat out refused to produce original programming. The reality shows that they have on the network now do not count. By now, they should have two or three original scripted dramas and five or six original scripted sitcoms on the network. Thank God for TVOne. I love them. I have told most of my family about TVOne. The only issue is that they haven’t had a consistent set of new episodes in months. I recently read that they will begin to see a profit this year for the first time since they have been on air. So with TVOne, it IS just an issue of needing to break even. All of TVOnes reruns are better than anything that BET has on. It is really sad, b/c five or six years ago I mostly watched BET.

Also, I love the Boondocks. I think Aaron is a genius. My only issue with the show is the use of the n- word. I read somewhere that Aaron stated that he is more offended by the term “n-word”, than by the actual word. The MLK episode and the -Itis episodes are classic tv.

I wish my people stop avoiding the truth,

We need changes for teenagers as they go through phases
More than just a concrete jungle the world got green acres
I wish I’d been more diligent
Smart cats rhyme militant the rest rhyme ignorant
I wish the world didn’t give us funny looks
Think we all just dummies and crooks
Athletes and entertainers singin’ hooks
We need more black babies, that’s in the books
I wish God could take away the pain

@CDNYC
I totally agree with you. Why is that white people (in control of TV programming) always make sure that they aren’t stereotyped? Sure, you have some trailer park comedies and things of that nature. But, for the most part you see white people portrayed in a positive and intelligent light.
But, Bob Johnson can’t make money and make black people at least look decent? *LOL* He couldn’t have produced a couple of original shows and portrayed us in a better light? Then we have rap videos which are played 22 hours of the day on BET and all the women are exposed looking like sex fiends. It’s ridiculous. White people make up the majority of the United States. Why aren’t they running around with thongs on and washing cars on music videos? It’s disgusting. I remember when I was in high school (I’m 28) having a booty was great. But, now the size of a black woman’s booty determines her worth and attractiveness as a female. You mean to tell me nobody thinks that has to do with black women’s portrayal in music videos? The state of this world is just disgusting. I’m glad they banned the Boondocks episode. They made it get way more attention by banning it, anytime you ban something, people just want to watch just to see what the fuss is about.

I think people put too much emphasis on BET and its affect on people’s behavior. I grew up watching BET and I am far from the black stereotype. People can’t look to the media for morals and values becuase America’s media is void in those areas. Second, College Hill, like the Real World, is a show about people acting stupid. Black people are human and therefore some of us will act stupid. However I do agree that BET needs a programming upgrade.

62. Exactly. I grew up on BET all my life, never been in trouble with the law and I attend one of the most prestigious HBCU’s in the country. BET didn’t raise me, my mother did. If a child fell victim to whatever they saw on TV, I refuse to believe BET dooms a child, then the parent’s ass needs to be chastized, not BET.
Do yall watch all this other mess on TV…VH1, MTV, E!, Comedy Channel, Playboy, etc..why don’t white people generalize their own race or feel that what’s shown on tv speaks to the plight of their race?? BET has nothing on this other stuff and I’m looking at the TV listings as we speak and I don’t see anything that’s detrimental on BET. How bout we start supporting the only station for us instead of trying to find yet another thing wrong with our race. Yall need to wake up and see what’s going on.

I watched BET pretty much all my life and I am perfectly fine, instead of people always looking for someone or something to blame for their problems maybe they should spend more time trying to solve them…face it people BET is a tv channel if you don’t want your children to watch it BLOCK IT, most tvs have that v-chip feature nowadays…simple as that!

It’s a shame because this is the truth. Ok, well obviously some things were overexaggerated, but it was pure comedy, lol. It’s so sad to say it but BET isn’t original at all! They just copy everyone else. For example:
- Bet = MTV
- 106 = TRL
- College Hill = The Real World
- Baldwin Hills = The Hills/Laguna Beach
etc , etc. … It really shouldn’t have to be a competition and by mimicking these other shows, it’s turning into one. I personally think that BET focuses on the ignorance of the black community rather than the positive things that matter. Instead of showing all the Fridays like 3x a week, they need to be showing movies of inspiration like Crash, Hotel Rwanda, Antwone Fisher, etc. I mean there’s no problem in presenting those types of flims but they need to broaden their horizons and stop potraying us ONLY in that matter because that is not what we are all about. Alot of people from the outside don’t know about our culture and only go by what they see on tv. BET stands for [ BLACK . ENTERTAINMENT . TELEVISION ] which means that it is a representation of who we are. Thumbs down to you Mr. BET. Great way to represent!

70. Right. To me, Black folks that complain about BET are simply embarrassed to be Black. They are scared of everything lil thing that we do that ain’t right (and nine times out of ten, it’s not consider right because White folks don’t do it) they cringe or get embarrrased.
Hey, if people of other races have a problem with what some of us do or choose to live, and they feel it reflect our whole race, it’s not our or BET’s ignorance, it’s theirs.
