VIDEO: banned “The Boondocks” episode satirizing BET
Wednesday, March 19, 2008
One of the banned episodes of Aaron McGruder’s hit comic strip and television show The Boondocks has been released on the net. Make sure you peep it above.
The episode entitled “The Huey Freeman Hunger Strike”, depicts BET’s CEO, Debra Lee, as “Debra Lee-vil,” a sinister Dr. Evil clone who kills underlings and rants about creating a network “that would accomplish what hundreds of years of slavery, Jim Crow and malt liquor couldn’t - the destruction of black people.”
In related news, a Canadian network will be airing another banned episode this Sunday. According to a report, the episode (also in protest of BET) shows Uncle Ruckus, a self-hating black man (voiced by Gary Anthony Williams), getting his own offensive BET reality show. [READ MORE]

I love the Boondocks. When it first aired it received so many negative opinions from the black community. Upon hearing this, I decided not to watch it. When I was in the Chi. My nephew asked me to watch the Boondocks with me and he was explaining what some of the episodes was about. I have to say I have been hooked ever since. The Boondocks speaks the TRUTH. I love it. Riley is a mess and Huey is a militant. I love it. I will have the dvd so I can watch all the episodes I missed. The Christmas one was my favorite.

I am so glad this video leaked! B.E.T really needs to wake the hell up. I mean its not just the fact that they show inappropriate material.
To me its the fact that thats ALL they show. Like so many people said what happen to the shows like teen summit? I mean bring something on with some damn substance.
Ok so they have a show called College Hill? Instead of the show trying to show our young kids why it is important to get an education..they choose to focus on WHO is hooking up with WHO. Who can get the drunkest? Who can yell the damn loudest.
A Good point that the character good love had was that they showcase a lifestyle that MANY people can simply not attain. And therefore feel they are inadequate. Not everyone can afford the damn Maybach or the damn jewels from JACOB THE JEWLER. Im not saying ALL of this is B.E.T fault but they have some kind of responsibilty to our youth, They need to be a little more selective on what they choose to broadcast!

I also definately agree its not B.E.T responsiblity to create morals or to raise the youth.
I do however think its their responsiblity (soley based on the fact that they are BLACK ENTERTAINMENT TELEVISION) to provide our children with all varieties of life. Not just the quick money, drama,. booty shaking type of life.
The way children are raised doesnt start nor does it end with B.E.T but I still believe that most of their programming is degrading to black people.
Sure VH! and MTV does too, but their not the ones saying that “we are here for the black people” because after all their name is Black Entertainment Television.

78, i agree with you. Why is it even called College Hill?? That’s insulting to me and everyone else that do go to college. How many times do we ever see them going to class? Or stuggling during exams? Or getting involved in college activities? The closest I’ve ever seen to them even touching the topic of college is “oh i have a big test to study for while this and that person is in the other room fooling around with so and so”. Okayyyy . . . way to go school work! No, that’s not the answer. We are not blaming BET for all that is wrong with the black community, but they sure aren’t helping us. Yes, they do try to throw in the right message here and there but that’s all watered down by the ignorant stereotypes.

Of course, BET is in no way, shape, or form to blame for all of the problems in the African American community, but they are definitely doing very little to address or fix those problems. Also, you must view the bigger picture. I remember when I was in college, I was speaking with an exchange student from Africa. She told me that BET was what they had as the representation of African Americans. She told me that she thought all African Americans were fair skinned with long hair (like many of the video girls of the 90’s) until she began school here. I’m sure she also drew multiple other conclusions about African Americans based on BET alone. BET does not paint a diverse enough picture of the African American community. This is just one example of multiple examples that I could give of the problems with BET. Once again, TVOne is a great network if you have it in your area. In life balance must always be present, BET is imbalanced in its representation of the African American lifestyle. Where are the biographies about successful African Americans that are not famous? Where are the stories about our origins and African royalty? You get the idea

Hallelujah, somebody finally tells the truth on the mockery of black people that is BET. You would think that w/ such a title BET would do its best to offer a varied look at the lives of black people. From the stereotypical to the not so . . . what about some “a different world” re runs, some “cosby show”, some “gimme a break”, some original programming . . . I know they can do it. Everything always looks booty on BET, yet it belongs to a major corporation. What gives? Is BET saying we’re not worth the time? Well if we aren’t worth their time, perhaps they should learn that this garbage they put on isn’t really worth our time either

I have been wanting to see this episode for the longest. I must admit it wasn’t as funny as the other episodes but the message is still clear. I can’t remember the last time I sat down and watched BET for more than 20 minutes. I really watched 106 and Park since they put Terrence and Rocsi on because I was mad that they kicked Julissa and Tigger off just when I was getting used to them. I mean they have taken BET Uncut off and they mention the Presidential election and getting tested for HIv every once in a while but thats not enough! I must admit I found Cita’s World amusing but then again I was a child. They don’t even have to have orginal programming. They can put on reruns of shows like Good Times, The Jeffersons, Family Matters, Moesha, The Hughleys, and all those other old UPN shows. Hell I’ll even settle for comedy shows like Dave Chapelle and Wanda At Large because at least they are entertaining. ComicView needs new episodes too!

im no BET apologists but u know the funny thing is that as much as we complain. we actually should be happy that ish like BET exist because the same ish that allows them broadcast ish that has no measurable value is the same that allows us voice our opinion. main problem i noticed is how do we entertain our own? u want the Cosby show or Flavor of Love? most of us want something that has educational value and cleverly written? but that takes time and money to write and for the viewer concentration that most who work mentally or physically challenging jobs are sometimes willing to dedicate. that’s why cartoons and tired ass VH1 shows are effective. short and to the point. no thought watch the anvil crush cat and a$$ cheeks clap for some gold fronts.

@Big Von and the other person that said BET doesn’t raise our kids and blah blah blah
Nobody is saying that BET is responsible for people’s behavior, but i need you for you to count how many BLACK shows are available, and how many BLACK networks are there. Then count how many of these BLACK shows exploit and degrage our race to the Nth degree. A big ass damn majority.
Now count how many WHITE SHOWS and WHITE networks are there, and how many of them show trailer type images, a small ass percent. 90% of tv represents white people, so they can spare having some dumb shows on. Black people have virtually NONE, and the few that we have all make us look like ignorant permiscious fools.
Do the math and you will see it all doesn’t add up.
SO EXCUSE THE FUCK OUTTA US FOR NOT BEING HAPPY WITH THE ONLY IMAGES AVAILABLE FOR BLACK PEOPLE ON TV BEING NEGATIVE AND DEGRADING.
STOP ACTIN LIKE KIDS DONT SPEND MOST OF THEY TIME WATCHING TV ANYWAY.

First of all, I have to LMAO@ people wishing Teen Summit and Cita’s World were back on.
Teen Summit got cancelled because every episode had the SAME TOPIC over and over and over again. I can’t be the only one who remembers this. After watching the show for a season (as a teenager), I pretty much got it, “don’t be peer pressured into drugs or sex.” Now, I know the lack of original content on the show was because Bob Johnson was too cheap to care.
And, Cita. . . she was everything you could want in a stereotypical caricature of Black women. All she was missing was fried chicken, a watermelon, and a baby or two.
As for the people who commented in favor of BET.
I have no children, so I am not expecting BET to raise my children. I am expecting BET to hold true to its name and be entertainment FOR Black people, not at the expense of Black people.
Forget other countries, there are people in THIS country who have never come in contact with a Black person, and their only image of Black people is what they see on BET. So, of course, if BET is supposed to be what Black people watch and support, then this must really be how Black people are. Uneducated, money driven, sex crazed, fools. Why shouldn’t they think every Black person with a good job was an affirmative action hire? According to College Hill, Black people don’t even really attend class, so you know they can’t be smart!
BET isn’t responsible for America’s children, but it is responsible for it’s depiction of Black people being stereotypical and racist. You’d think it was Viacom’s fault, but the programming was bad long before Viacom came along.
Basically, to borrow words from my man Kanye, “BET doesn’t care about Black people.”
*smh*

Unfortunately BET is the only network on basic cable that is supposed to be for the Black community. Well, guess what, I don’t find it entertaining to see a bunch of ignorant people put on a minstrel show for white America.
You were wondering who’s going to watch BET if Black people dont? That’s your answer. . . WHITE PEOPLE! You know, the biggest consumers of the hip hop industry to date.
I happen to love being Black. I also happen to be proud of the fact that when I went to school, I took my butt to class and actually learned something. And, I’m proud of the fact that my 13 yr old little sister aspires to be more than a video whore with a boyfriend who has gold teeth and spinners on his vehicle, which is steadily depreciating in value.

Most channels cater to white people… they don’t need their own channel and that’s why they aren’t seen as ‘stereotypical’. In countries like America and the UK where BET is pretty much the only Black channel, there is no excuse or reason why they couldn’t show more positive shows… it’s as if they don’t think we will find that entertaining! If you think people from other races that watch BET don’t think that some Black people are actually like that of the Blacks shown on BET, then you’re crazy! BET stand for Black Entertainment Television and it should feature shows that the majority of Blacks find entertaining… if we go by the number of people who think BET sucks on CL then BET is in dire need of an upgrade.

I USE TO FEEL SO PROUD WATCHING PEOPLE WHO WERE YOUNG BLACK TEENAGERS LIKE I WAS; THE TOPICS WERE INTELLIGENT AND INFORMATIVE; NOWADAYS, THE ONLY THING FOR TEENAGERS TO LEARN ON BET NOW, IS HOW TO POP, LOCK AND DROP SOMETHING.I REMEMBER WATCHING VIDEO SOUL, VIDEO LP, CARIBBEAN RHYTHMS, RAP CITY-WITH THE MAYOR CHRIS THOMAS, AND PRINCE DAJOR AS THE HOST, AND BEVERLY JOHNSON ON SUNDAYS. WHAT HAPPENED! BET USED TO BE A STATION THAT APPEALS TO EVERY BLACK AMERICAN REGARDLESS OF AGE AND DEMOGRAPHIC. I ADMIT, I AM A WATCH COLLEGE HILL, BUT I AM A BIT DISAPPOINTED AT THE FACT THAT THE SHOW IS LIKE A GHETTO VERSION OF THE REAL WORLD. It’s interesting that people would say that it’s the parents responsibility to raise their child and not BET; BUT the parents are not raising their kids! You have mothers who are psychologically damaged raising little girls and boys. Fathers running out on their responsibility. You have kids being raised by the street, by other kids and by the government. TV is the new parent; has been for a while. How many so called parents come home and park their kids in front of the tv cause it’s just to hard to be a parent? How many kids come home from school to an empty house?
BET is not providing a variety of images of Black people. The network does not counter act negative depictions with positive ones. The worst is the way Black women are depicted (well if you are lucky to find a Black woman on there, since most of the women are mixed race and not Black). These images are being projected around the world. Hell, even when i visited West Africa, the only images of Black American women are negative (crack head, whores, booty shakers, prostitutes). The men are depicted as pimps, drug dealers, lazy don’t work, good for nothing.
No wonder why when other immigrant groups come here (even the Black ones), they distance themselves from the Black community. Would you want to be included in a community that is portrayed so negatively around the world? And you better believe that programs shown on BET are partially to blame.

As was said before BET is owned by Viacom and therefore elite white people. You really think Debra Lee has any real charge of the programming on that network? She is a stooge, being told what to do by the “powers that be”. That power wants everyone dumbed down to be even worse stupid consumers than what they are today. This is the same with MTV, VH! and basically any network on cable. These people do not care about anybody s well being but their own….which comes in the form of profits and more so your minds. What could help BET is it being more balanced.
I mean, there is nothing wrong with it getting inspiration from other networks, or with it airing shows like College Hill.
The problem is that the network does NOT want to showcase various depictions of black people.
I mean, I can’t believe that a network worth over a billion dollars can not switch up its format.
And I also refuse to believe that showing tired reruns, degrading videos, and goofy reality shows 90% of the time is all they are able to come up with.
Seriously, the programming has to be something that someone thinks we (meaning the world) have to see on a daily basis.
And no, that’s not called a conspiracy theory, it’s called an assasination of the human mind and the spirit.

OMG Grand Slam,
Ever since BET uncut, and BET Comic View I have not been a fan of BET. I have long stated that BET is a black hole that the youth fall into. But its not just BET it’s VH1 FOL 1, 2, and 3, MTV. BET was in its conception the NBC, CBS for black people. But it changed on us. And BET is not a free station people pay for their kids to be distroyed. BET is part of the reason little black girls want to grow up and be (stripper) video dancers. Young black boys want to be Ball players and drug dealer. Station like those show the glam and not the gore. Lets take Pimp C how dumb do you have to be to over dose on Cough meds. ( Now yall mad because he made all those great song about bitches and hoes and drug and did so much to up lift the black communtiy) We present him to kids and say he made it be like him. Where was the lesson. We still rappping about it and drinking cough meds. The problem is us as a people. /we did the samething with “HOT ASS MESS” but the next day we were watching the silliness. Wow, I’m a new fan of the BOonDocks. This episode really opened my eyes to what I really wasn’t letting effect me. The images and messages on B.E.T. can be misleading to the younger people but as adults we have the power to control what our children watch. Yet that doesn’t give B.E.T. the right to show all these negative things and hardly any positive. Especially since they’re adversitising under the name Black Entertainment.
That means its representing us as black people and how they’re going about it isn’t fair or right.

MTV isn’t what it used to be either…I only watched the Real World…but reality TV has gotten outrageous…and VH1 fell into the trap too with the ILNY and FOL garbage….no such things as just music videos anymore….

BET perpetuates the stereotypes that degrade our race, that is the issue. For me a channel that claims to be for Black people should not demean us but enlighten and uplift. Seeing women’s booties jiggle and rappers dance around like coons is not doing this.
my two cents

Some people just don’t get it. Just like some slaves thought that was all there was. Harriet Tubman said she could’ve freed twice as many had they realized they were enslaved. I’ve been waiting for this episode to post online for months! It had a slightly different tone than some of the other episodes. It was brilliant though and totally on point. You know I cringe at hearing nig*** and even moreso out of the mouth of a child, but there’s so much to love about the show I just plug my ears. And I absolutely hate the Uncle Ruckus character…because it is so true to life and that amount of self-hate is just…painful to see. I miss Chapelle’s show as well. even Aaron got burned out, but I’m so glad he kept the show going. We need it.

I think this is hillarious!!! Seriously…. hillarious ppl.
Yea me and my family have been saying the same thing about BET having completely un-original shows. Like all of their shows are “black” versions of mtv shows…
How i’m living= cribs
Access granted= Making the video
and my favorite… Spring “bling” = mtv spring break…
Why must they put the word bling?? bling yall???
I mean not everything on BET is bad or putting us in a bad light. But it’s just certain things that bother me really bad about BET like…. BLACKbuster movies….really..seriously , blackbuster? why not… BET movie presentation? or something.
BET is cool and everything, I watch sometimes and all that… I just hope they improve with some things.

Aaron McGruder is a fearless genius and needs to be revered in the black community for his brand of social commentary regarding the state of Black America. He is thought provoking and he challenges us to examine ourselves amid this oppressive society. That piece embodies freedom of speech and its banning reflects how powerful his message is…………and he’s just being funny! Think about that.

BET stands for Blacks Embarrassing Themselves… I mean seriously, it’s basically the only black channel there is and it’s doing a terrible job of representing us!!! This episode of Boondocks the the truth, plain and simple. We need something that will enhance our image, educate AND entertain us. A boycott wouldn’t be such a bad idea… don’t know about the hunger strike though…

Keep it in perspective. Every show cant depict seriousness, black issues, and be expected to educate black folks. We have to be smart enough to elevate our own minds people. We are the master of our destinies not bet. Do we really expect BET to owe us anything? I subscribe to Bill Cosby’s method of thinking to change our communities. He doesn’t sugar coat it, he tells us the things we dont want to hear.
Yes, those videos can be poisonous. Nothing annoys me more than the way they depict POVERTY as something appealing. WTF? In the hood. Those gangster rap videos should contain a disclaimer… The poverty depicted in this video is not representative of real poverty. Visit your nearest project to see the effects of lack of education, ignorance, gang violence, promiscuity, and of course drugs.
I do believe that Baldwin Hills is a step in the right direction. It is okay to strive to be upper middle class. Lets the younguns know that it is okay not to fit in with the hip hop stereotypes that so many strive to be a part of.

I thought this was going to be a new episode. I clicked it an I was like damn Teletoon done played this lol. Thank God for Canada. That Teletoon Network plays anything after Ten O’clock. But that Boondocks episode was the bomb as usual. And what the hell at the person who said gun crime has gone up in Canada because of BET. Do you know how easy it is to obtain a gun an drugs in Canada sweet heart it’s both the black and white little kids. Sk8ers, rockers, and gangsters. I’m sure as hell not all of them watch no damn BET.

You are right Jazz (#6 and others) - Teen summit was so uplifting and Sheri Carter and Donnie Simpson were intelligent hosts. Rap City used to be good too back in the day. Now they got That damn stupid ignant Terrence and Rocci. They should hadve at least kept Free and AJ. This episode was on point. I have seen other episodes and The Boondocks is a great show that tells the truth.

I know by now that most people will never read this comment, because there have been so many posted, but I can’t help but to put this out there.
For those saying that something is better than nothing, I will strongly disagree— especially if the nothing is poison disguised as medicine. BET was supposed to give black people an alternative to programming featuring prodominately white people, programming that was supposed to represent US. Maybe the BET of old did that, but this BET is only fueling the beliefs of everyone else in the world that African-Americans are loud, obnoxious, violent, ignorant, promiscous and uneducated. And truth be told, some of us our. But we are also spiritual, intelligent, creative, hilarious, resourceful, stylish, sexy, visionaries, who have integrity, who have ambition and who want to SEE all of this reflected back at them. No it is not the stations responsibility to raise children, but it is the station’s responsiblity to show BLACK people and not just N*GGAS! My nieces watch this women with stank attitudes and slutty ways and think it’s cute. They watch these men who are lustful and ignorant and think that is who they should be trying to impress. Do you know how hard it is to counter act that when that is all see people that look like them doing on television. TV is a medium that reaches into our homes and eventually into our psyche. And it has damaged us…because some of us think it is okay to be represented by such foolishness.
Sitcoms, a few video shows, a talk show that features today’s stars, a style show, a regular news program, a late night talk show, a variety show, a makeover show with BLACK stylists, a home improvement show, a show about marriage/parenting (like Wife Swap), a cooking show, a cartoon, crime show or hell some more recent movies….the sky is the limit.
And for the people who will say I’m a coon for not liking BET (not even the music awards) I am a black woman and proud of it. You will only see me rocking my OWN NATURAL HAIR (no offense to you who don’t—I’m just making a point) when I am representing my majority black clients (atty) or when I am at home chilling with my black man or attending my black alma maters football game (FAMU) or involved with my black orgs (NBLSA, NABJ, NCNW, NAACP and my own org H.A.N.D.S) or out supporting my black mother’s successful black-owned business. I represent to the fullest….it’s BET’s turn!

#142, I AGREE WITH YOU. THE CAMERAS DO LOOK A LITTLE BIT FOGGY. BET CAN NEVER DO ANYTHING RIGHT OR TRY TO DO SOMETHING LIVE WITHOUT A SCREW UP. LIKE THE BET AWARDS. EVERY YEAR THERE’S SOMETHING THAT GOES WRONG WITH THE PRODUCTION LIKE LAST YEAR WHEN 50 CENT PERFORMED THE MUSIC OR SOMETHING STOPPED AND THE YEAR BEFORE WHEN T.I. PERFORMED THE MUSIC STOPPED. BET CAN NEVER DO ANYTHING LIVE. THE ONLY GOOD THING BET HAS IS RIP THE RUNWAY. I USUALLY LIKE THAT, BUT THIS YEARS WAS VERY SHORT AND BORING. BET SHOOTS ALL THE SPECIALS LIKE 2 WEEKS IN ADVANCE AND CONCRETELOOP ALREADY HAS PHOTOS AND WINNERS POSTED UP BEFORE THE SHOW AIRS. BET IS WACK

BET does have a responsibility. And while I applaud you not being influenced by the substandard programming, every generation that comes after us becomes more and more dependent upon the images and programming they see on tv and now the internets.

A person’s choice of candidate has nothing to do with BET. I personally know plenty of people supporting Barack that could give you a laundry list of what’s wrong with BET. Also, liking a celebrity couple has nothing to do with BET. It is amazing how the conclusion can be drawn that the criticism of BET is a form of self hate. All people are asking is that BET do a lot better. They aren’t even trying. Also, how can the criticism of BET be self hate when TVOne has been lauded on this post and it is also a station owned by an African-American and primarily geared toward minorities? Even those that are defening BET have to admit that the station is doing a lot of things wrong. I’m going to need one of the approx. two people on this post that have defended BET to list 25 things (that are not celebrity related) that BET has done to positive impact the African American community at large in the last two years.

@☆★Megan★☆ the thing is that white ppl on shown on practically every channel on tv. they show many different representations of themselves. we have ONE tv channel for ourselves and most of the programs show blacks in a bad light. white ppl think that if they want to know more about black culture, all they have to do is watch BET and they don’t realize that BET does not represent all black ppl. i understand what you’re saying about how BET didn’t mess you up. same for me. i used to watch it and i turned out great but sometimes i look at my younger cousins and i hear them speaking slang and reciting all these hip hop lyrics (and not “mos def” hip hop- i mean ’soulja boy” hip hop and i’m sorry but it pains me to hear them sing his songs) and i feel bad. hopefully they become like me (lol) but you never know b/c there are a lot of young black kids who watch bet and don’t turn out great b/c they think this is how black ppl are supposed to be and hey think their parents are too old/not american enough (i’m from a family of immigrants) to understand. BET needs to be revamped if they want to be the “black” channel.
and also, yes white ppl have playboy etc. so we should just create a separate channel where they show playboy-type material instead of doing that after-hours nonsense. i might be wrong but i don’t remember mtv having an after-hours thing so why do they have to do that with us. i’m not saying completely take all sexual content off but you shouldn’t be able to show bare breasts even if it is after hours. create another channel for that

@BIGVON the bottom line is that we ARE proud of being black and that’s why we want our race to be properly represented. if you have no problem being discriminated by other races b/c they think lowly of you, then that’s fine but personally i hate it when ppl assume that i am something other than what i truly am just b/c some tv station claims to represent me. BET is the only channel targeted towards blacks that takes pride in showing negative images 24/7 unless you’re tuning in on sundays. how does that not bother you? if it doesn’t, you have a warped sense of what being black means
and @ tamdiggy i’m transitioning my hair back to natural! i’m really excited.
