VIDEO: banned “The Boondocks” episode satirizing BET
Wednesday, March 19, 2008
One of the banned episodes of Aaron McGruder’s hit comic strip and television show The Boondocks has been released on the net. Make sure you peep it above.
The episode entitled “The Huey Freeman Hunger Strike”, depicts BET’s CEO, Debra Lee, as “Debra Lee-vil,” a sinister Dr. Evil clone who kills underlings and rants about creating a network “that would accomplish what hundreds of years of slavery, Jim Crow and malt liquor couldn’t - the destruction of black people.”
In related news, a Canadian network will be airing another banned episode this Sunday. According to a report, the episode (also in protest of BET) shows Uncle Ruckus, a self-hating black man (voiced by Gary Anthony Williams), getting his own offensive BET reality show. [READ MORE]

I saw this on youtube and it was funny.
BET does suck now and why are they playing Malcolm & Eddie, The Jamie Foxx Show and Girlfriends. People should watch BET J because they show decent music videos and they used to show old re-runs of Video Soul.

I’m not ashamed, the problem is that I don’t act like one crabon copy of black people in general on BET. I stop watching BET the day I turned 19, because I relaized it was a big joke that Viacom who also owns MTV played on us. I don’t shake my ass infront of a car or store, I don’t roll my eyes and pop my gums, i just don’t rock urban wear all the time, I can pronounce my words, and don’t even talk about thos horrible music videos they play . BET may represent some people, but it does not represent ME. If people think BET is doing a great job fine, but I’m more diverse. I love the Boondocks! i’ll stick with PBS

No matter …… What you want to say , how you want to spin it ? Get this into your system Black ,African American people. Truth is not sugar coated, non-offensive nor comfortable and conveneinent.( African Americans) only want to hear Truth when its conveinent and does not force you to take accountability for your actions…. Im glad that The Boondocks tackle these issues, any proud African American Male or Female should be…. And if this is the only Outlet (right now) that can steer up some ruckus and shed truth what we already know has been going on ……. Then Draw, DRAW , DRAW ……….because until we understand what is really important we are forever destine to remain stagnant in a Auction Block position….. Still going to the highest bidder…

I can’t watch the video because I’m at work, but Im sure its fantastic. I think as black ppl we all need to take responsibilty for each other.. and since BET is supposed to be a representation of us; we need to make sure that they no longer show our evils. I mean we all know people like the ones we see on BET, is that a complete representation of black ppl? No! But it has some truth… but in that we need to do/show something that will balance out the playing field..

From the day it was announced that VIACUM I mean VIACON, darn…I mean VIACOM were the new owners I knew it was all down hill from there……BET is embarrassing for Black people. It was a blatant sellout. Its our fault, we keep watching. If the whites see that there is no $$$ being made, they will unload it back to the black community. Black People unite! Stop Watching the crap! Don’t watch it! You have internet use that for entertainment….Until we get Rocsi and her man fired, as well as revamping the programs, we will not WATCH. People what you focus on GROWS! Law of attraction at work here……Don’t watch, BET will soon be a memory. Then we as a community come together and CREATE for our selves what we and our kids need to see…….DON’T WATCH! I started a petition to get Rocsi and her man out of there on myspace not one person signed……just sayin’ : )

I am a fan of Aaron McGruder and his comic strip. I love Huey. I was militant to the extreme like him when I was younger. I also agree that BET is a disappointment. However, I’m kind of torn because there are days when I just want to turn on the TV and see black people PERIOD…and I can’t do that without BET.
I personally think Flavor of Love and I Love New York have propogated more tomfoolery in the past year than BET has in the past 10 years.
We have 6 children….we don’t let them watch anything on TV that we haven’t approved. That includes BET. Our children under 12 can’t watch BET period–or MTV (except Scarred—to teach them not to do dumb things like those kids on that show)…that being said, parents have the power and responsibility to turn off the TV set.
BET does suck—but so do MTV and VH1. American popular culture SUCKS and BET is part of it.

BET is such a disappointment. This a station that could motivate, entertain and inspire the black race worldwide. Instead it caters to the lowest common denominator, usually showing images that degrade and embarrass us. I don’t know what the Execs at BET are thinking but I bet they don’t even let their own kids watch the crud that they show. I agree with an earlier comment - what happened to Teen Summit, it was a show where young people could get together and talk about important issues and have some fun. Where is the commentary on the presendential races. I doesn’t make sense to have BET achievement awards once a year to honour people like Cornel West etc., if 364.5 days out of the year nothing else is ever said of these people or people like them. BET could embrace all sides of black culture/life from the neighbourhood streets to Wall Street but for some reason it insists on dwelling in a back alley promoting the negative things in our community that we need to overcome. We have more to offer than flashy chains & strip clubs……It shouldn’t just be boycotted - we should shut’em down!

If a BET boycott ever really does catch on, it’ll be a wonderful thing…
But, “Niggas is gon’ be niggas…” so I don’t see that ever happening.
How funny was it when Debra Lee was like “here at BET we’re not working hard enough. I saw 3 niggas reading, and 1 of them was smiling.”
Too bad the people that need to understand the satire probably won’t….

I applaud Aaron for scripting an episode that has the thoughts and ideas that are shared by many people. I never watch BET now. I wish the administration at BET headquarters would view this episode and realize there are people who want better.

I agree with Megan. I know that people don’t like the way BET portrays black people sometimes. But you can’t blame BET for violence. If your stupid enough to go and do something you see on t.v knowing that it is wrong thats you. Black people need to stop trying to pin the blame on others and take responsibility for their own actions and thats the problem with us blacks its easier for us to blame others then to stand up and say i am wrong. I live in Canada and there are black people in Canada but there are hardly any black shows and so i watch BET it is a black show so i support it to the fullest. Look how many white shows there are with so much drama on it too so why don’t people talk about that why do we always have to be the to bring down our own black race? why can’t we stick together like the rest of the races why we always have to be at war with each other i just don’t get and maybe i’ nver will. i know i love music and i am not dead and boring i know half of you people who wrote comments watched BET at some point of your life and listened to the same music they be playing on 106 and park!!

I hate BET and above that I hate the fact that they can show a girls crotch out the door, but they have an issue playing Belly or other great black movies Uncensored. And another thing, I live in Canada, I am tired of hearing about THE WIRE and not being able to watch it, I can’t stand the Canadian Blackouts, and the bet Next or whatever that plays videos from 4 years ago (example Avant 4 Minuets ) I AM TIRED OF IT AND IT!

Can you guys be anymore blindsighted? The point of the matter is, BET is NOT doing it’s job. 98.9% of us black folks on here agree that it is a representation of our people, and to have this many people outraged is a disgrace. It’s a shame because the station was created for us. We the people are obviously not satisfied so what the hell are they doing? Black Entertainment Television my ass! We are not the ones that they are entertaining. They are entertaining everyone else who believes in those stereotypical images of African Americans. If I sit here and make a list of all the negatives versus the positives that BET is doing for us, I guarantee you that the ratio would be 99:1. Yes, BET tries to throw in the positive message here and there at times, but like I said before it is being watered down by all the negativity that it promotes. We are not all about shaking our ass in front of a drop top vehicle with spinning rims and some poom poom shorts. We are not looking for BET to raise our kids, shit I can raise my own damn kids, but for BET to put a label on us like that, I’m not buying it.
No one is asking for the station to be cancelled, it just needs to be improved. We got granted the opportunity to have our very own station and this is how we take advantage of that opportunity? Ms. Lee needs to open up her eyes and bring fourth something that would educate our youth instead of brainwashing them with all this ignorance flashing across the television screen. As of now, I fell terribly sorry for our upcoming generations. Hopefully they will have enough sense to recognize the differences. Point blank.

I think that it’s time for our culture to look above the horizons, and stop mimicking others to become whole. Become your own person, and quit looking excuses on why we are doomed for ignorance. I believe if we truly disagreed with the programming that BET was presenting, we would start another televised station, and support that station once it started it’s foundation. BET doesn’t have to be the only “black” station to represent our culture to the world. A lot of times when another black business is opened up in our neighborhood….what is said? “Man, im not going there…they are probably going to jack something up”, instead of supporting and offering new ideas. Let quit all the the talking and start showing action.

Cita’s wirld was not original it was her being ghetto as hell read below and teen summit was also a ripoff from MTV and ABC that all had similar shows where teens discussed various topics bet did have great shows back then but know they have with downhill I stopped watching when AJ and Free left and were replaced by that idiot Terrence and Rosci ditzy ass.
Cita’s World was a video music show that aired on Black Entertainment Television (BET) in the United States. It was the first show to feature a virtual reality black stereotypical character as the hostess named Cita. It was co-developed, produced and sometimes written by Tracye Z. Kinzer. The show ran from 2000 to 2002 in television. Thank goodness this show was canceled because it degrated the image of black people with this Cita character speaking in ebonics with her vocal set at loud. It was humiliating to watch black stereotype at it’s worst; before the Source Awards. The show was originally named Jam Zone when it was created in 1997, which was just a wall paper video show until 1999 when Cita emerged into the homes of millions.
In between videos, Cita would “talk” to the viewers, answer viewer mail and offer her unadulterated opinions on current events, celebritiies and more. The voice and motion of the Cita character was performed by Kittie. From Washington, DC to New York City and lastly Hollywood, Ca., the shows content came from producer Tracye Kinzer who assigned her writers Cliff McBean, Monica “Monie Mon” Dyson and Angela Yarborough topics to create great entertainment.
The show received heavy criticism from the Black community, mainly because of Cita’s controversial presentation. However, after three successful years, the show was cancelled in 2002.

Excellent depiction of this joke of a network. BET is good for nothing and it is sad that a network such as BET who has a wonderful opportunity to provide positive portrayals of African-Americans chooses to be cowardly and show nothing but cooning and bafooning. What’s next modern day Black Face? Sorry I’m mistaken that is already being done on shows such as College Hill, Hell Date, and almost everything else on this horrible, stereotypical, mediocre, network.

You should do everything in moderation, but not BET.
I started by limiting myself just to the videos years ago.
Then I realized that they were even poising the videos.
Yeah we all remember “BET After Dark”… sad!!!…..
I swear that is where Aaron McGruder got that song “Booty Butt Cheeks” he uses in his cartoon when talking about BET.
I knew it was over when they cancelled BET Nightly News,
like someone said… who the hell cancels the news???!!!!
The shows and people that were BET’s foundation are gone.
Teen Summit, Caribbean Rhythms with Rachael, Planet Groove, Video Soul with Donnie Simpson and Sherry Carter, Midnight Love, BET Nightly News, BET Tonight with Tavis Smiley. Even Rap City was better.
I switched to BETJ (formally known as BET Jazz) years ago.
I have always listened to Jazz, so it wasn’t that big of a jump for me.
Within the last few years they have revamped and included new programming.
Don’t know if you can get it in your area, but it’s a great alternative to BET.
They have Neo-Soul music shows, Concerts, Jazz, Caribbean Shows,
My Two Cents with Keith Boykin (great discussion show), The Best Shorts (Black Short Films) and even the Turn On (an “grown up” music video show, with great R&B videos and R&B artist/guest who you normally don’t see interviews with.)
VH1Soul also has SOME decent video shows.
Take in mind all these stations are owned by Viacom,
the creators of “Flavor of Love” and “I Love NY”, which should be included in your boycott.
I was always told to take careful consideration what you take into your body.
That includes your mind and the images you let into your home.
The cartoon above is not a stretch from the truth, it is the truth.
Though I think he should have shown how BET seemed to be started with good intentions.
But we all know what they say about the road to hell.
Block the channel… it’s not for you anymore.
(That is just my advice, take or leave it).
It was created as a venue for Black artist and shows to be showcased when MTV refused, its mission has changed. Be careful of its current motives.

Ok, so Boondocks is a masterpiece altogether, but this episode was simply GENIUS!!! They always manage to bring the truth and I guess in this case, it was too much for people to handle since it was banned, which sucks. But Im from Toronto, and thank Heavens I was able to see this when it aired.
B.E.T. has definitely had some type of impact on the black community. Being from Toronto, I see many young people mimicking the things they see on the channel and having many of the attitudes that are portrayed by many of these rappers and people in the shows. Not to say that there are no ghettos or projects in the dot, but people think that because they see certain things and its magnified in the media, that they need to act that way as well. Its true, violence and teen pregnancy is on the rise, and I’m not blaming B.E.T. because parenting skills need to be held accountable as well, but the channel is raising kids in the absence of a strong parent figure, is learning and adapting values and behaviours from the channel.
I personally, don’t see the need in watching B.E.T.- same old music videos every damn day, and same bootlegg programming from MTV, VH1, etc etc. I remember when we first got it over here, and teen summit and hits from the streets was the ish to watch, even BET news. What’s happened? B.E.T. is not quality viewing and it is playing a prevalent role in the demise of the black community.
nevertheless, cutos to boondocks and this boondocks episode. I think its getting the necessary attention it deserves…look we’re all talking about it.

I am surprised this was even released online-it is very powerful! The shame is even if you don’t watch BET, they still are getting paid because it’s a channel thats included in most cable packages. Therefore, it doesn’t matter if you don’t watch, they’re still getting paid to produce crappy programming. I think I was officially through with BET when on their College Hill Interns, they could not find decent, respectful, truly on point black college students. I attended FAMU and the campus was full of productive, progressive people-yes we have our share of non-progressive people, but overall it was overwhelmingly positive. I think the same would hold true of most HBCU’S. However when you stoop to showing Black college aged folks who act like non-progressives as opposed to people trying to attain higher learning, what does a child have to aspire to in reference to college or being a productive person within society.

Megan,
You are driving home everyone’s point here. You had a mamma who loved you and raised you right. Someone who told you and taught you how you should walk, talk and act and you are a product of that upbringing. Unfortunately, MANY children don’t have that. There are too many parents who let tv raise their children. Instead of going outside to play like you and I did kids sit in their rooms and watch tv. There aren’t any conversations. Yes it’s a damn shame and they should be chastised for it but that’s not going to happen or change them. For many kids what they see, know and aspire to be is determined by what they see on tv. I can’t tell you how many kids I’ve talked to over the years who only aspire to sing, rap or play sports. You wonder why. It’s because the only “prominent” black people they see are rappers, singers and athletes. Little white kids can imagine themselves as a doctor, lawyer, teacher, playmate, dumb rich girl and everything in between. At least they have the option. What options do our kids have?

LOL that was hilarious. I guess that what Debra Lee looks like, under that mask she’s wearing
U know, BET like most of yall said went under after it was acquired by Viacom. I NEVER look at that mess anymore. It doesnt represent us anymore and propogates all the worst images—to white folks and younger viewers. In terms of kids being a product of BET, that’s what will happen if PARENTS don’t take parental responsibilities and instead leave BET (or TV in general!) to raise their kids for them! This isn’t just a black thing—this is a universal problem, whites, blacks, Hispanics, regardless of who u are, if u dont raise ur kids right and leave them to hours of unadulterated filth like BET, MTV, VH1, etc they’re gonna end up in a pretty pitiful position. They’ll have no interest in school, education, their future careers, etc since there’s so much obsession with celebrity culture and materialism as a poor substitute for a REAL FUTURE.
As far as BET goes, its gonna continue as long as ppl view this garbage. I fear what it’s gonna do in the UK, since it’s now over there. I’d hate to think of the images of Black British people they show once/if they start producing homegrown shows for them.

What’s sad about this whole Boondocks fiasco, is that free speech applies to some people but not all. Shows like South Park and Family Guy say really offensive things about African Americans, Asians, Hispanics, Jewish people etc and none of their episodes have been banned. It’s a joke an exaggerated joke but a joke. No, I don’t think that BET is responsible for “bad apples” in the black community but I DO agree that Bet does air disgustingly misogynistic videos and completely mindless television.(but one cant completely blame that on BET OBVIOULSY they have an audience or else they wouldn’t be on air.) What happened to teen summit and the news(forgot what it was called)?

oh my lord!!! that episode wuz beastmode. but that is true about BET they take ideas from other networks. but so does MTV and VH1 why don’t they talk about those networks. I mean it seemslike they was doing it because a black person took some ideas, but when the white people do it, it’s ok. thats wrong. have a prob with with my coment contact me at deshay_adams@yahoo.com

The 16:23 mark was both brilliant and hilarious when he had the black woman and coon negro bow down to the white man and say “Master” for no reason, and even had the white man wonder why they did that. It was a brilliant nuance that McGruder had the white man, who’s really in control behind the scenes, come in for a cameo when he saw that the black woman in corporate America couldn’t control the situation like he trained her to. The brother, Aaron McGruder has a tremendous understanding of our people and how messed up they are. He also knows that the driving force of our people is to please the white man. I also enjoyed the satire of “Rollo Goodlove” who represents every phony black “leader” that black people buy into because they’re rich and on TV. I like when Rollo said, “I’ma change the system from the inside.”, lol. Normal coon negro mantra. No one changes the system. The system changes them.

we jus got BET in the UK about a month ago, at first i was lovin it then it turned into, MTV, we get these adds that tell us about famous black folk who “paved the way for us”
i thought by me havin this channel i would feel closer to the black community, however all i see is college hill(no 1 ever goes to school) and baldwin hills, which aint nothing but the black laguna beach.
the boondocks are highlighting some flaws within that establishment

This may be true about BET but it would be wrong to make BET sound like the bad guys. Is MTV not having the same effect on America? The truth is that the majority of tv is tainting the minds of america. Dont put it all on BET.

I think BET needs to watch this episode repeatedly and realize that what is on this show is true. BET displays horrible images of black people and everything our ancestors stood for. Watching women shake their behinds and men calling them everything but women. They should be ashamed and really should be put off the air. Money is not worth the deterioration of our black society. One way or another they will one day be accountable for their actions and realize that BET IS EVERYTHING BUT BLACK STAR POWER!!!

Let me tell ya’ll something. This episode was probably not really “banned”. Knowing Aaron McGruder’s satire sense of humor, this was probably a joke in and out itself, how an episode bashing BET had to be taken down. He did a similar joke in the comic strip.

I don’t like the programming on BET, not because I hate being black, but because there is no BALANCE of intelligent vs. mindless programming. Sure MTV and VH1 have silly shows with white folks acting the fool, but those are a few out of several hundred! We barely have 10 - 15 shows and almost all of them are derrogatory to our people? Again - there is no balance. Where are OUR financial investment shows? Where are the “Different World” type sitcoms of the ‘ 90s that were really funny AND embraced higher education? I know that BET is first and foremost a business; a network that has to get viewers in order to make money. But if the only shows black people truly want to view are about hell dates and music videos, then the stereotype is true and we are in much more trouble than we think.

I really hope this episode is released soon because people(especially the youth) need to know what B.E.T is really about. With this episode of Boondocks maybe our generation will begin to open their eyes and see the true evil that is B.E.T. I don’t give B.E.T. any kudos because when it was owned by black people it could’ve been great. The shows could’ve had substance and comedy but helping their race was never in the agenda just a profit. Now that it owned by Viacom we have seen the rise of the controversial hot ghetto mess but I can’t honestly say that it would not have come to be if it was still owned by black people. It is also a shame how that while B.E.T is suppose to be for black people it isn’t that really black people on the channel. I’m not considered dark skinned but I don’t see no woman of my color or darker on B.E.T. As a matter of fact aren’t most of them spanish and mixed. So B.E.T. does need to be shut down
because they making a fool out of us and creating a lot of ignorance in the community.

I’m a BET hater, and haven’t watched that channel for a number of years now. There’s far too much rubbish on that network.
I’ve seen both of the banned episodes. They are two of the best and funniest Boondocks episodes produced. They can be found on any major torrent site. Gotta thank the Canadians for that

#62 and #70,
You are living in a fantasy land. The reason you might not be a statistic is because you probably have responsible parents. The same goes for white people that watch mtv and vh1 - their parents are the reason they don’t conform to the images they see on t.v. But how many of our black kids watching this channel have responsible parents? Their biological parents are just as ignorant, or not there at all. Hence, the television and their ignorant ass friends are the parents. Reality - The world revolves around sex. BET teaches our young men that if they want to have sex they have to be dangerous, money making thugs, because “bitches love a thug with paper”. BET teaches our young ladies to flaunt their bodies to get that “thugged out hustla” and lead the exciting lifestyle that they crave. Fuck buying a home or other appriciating assests, get these rims so you can shine like a peacock and attract women.

Cee-lo Green was funny as Rev. Goodlove. I love the truth straight with no chaser. Cartoon Network does its network justice by letting Aaron McGruder’s message go unchanged. Although with all he other edgy material the Boondock’s touches on why ban this episode?

Rollo Goodlove represents Jessie Jackson the most ignorant N word with a vocabulary that ever lived. He has done nothing notable but advertise himself as a helper of black people but what exactly has he helped?
Rollo Goodlove is a great Jessie Jackson lol. I am only on this site because I was looking online for this episode but from what I read some people here are hypocrits, people on here are more in touch with Jayz and Beyonces marriage then whats going on in their own homes. I am black but alot of my people make me sick and I dont hate myself.
Do we pay attention to anything we do? I have been called the N word by more blacks then any white man. Oh and dont even get me started on Bathing Apes.
We wear clothes that call you a clean monkey!!! made a song about it and everything.
Yall enjoy being Bathing Apes. I am going to continue to appose the very existance of this mass destributed ignorance and the wide exceptance thereof

Again, I would like to reinforce the “Something is better than Nothing”.
I’d rather be seen as an mystery or engima to outsiders…
It’s alot better than being seen as an ignorant fool before you even open your mouth.
____
Its a shame that an educated black person is a “surprise” to other socail groups.
Its even more of a shame that an educated black person is a “surprise” to other black people.
It is thrice a shame that an educated black person is seen as an enemy to black people.

omfg i jus luv the boondocks 4 puttin BET out lyk that!!! lmao. but realli i honestly think that BET is biterish and that they depict black ppl in the wrong way. yes, its very true that it shuld not be an excuse for “raising children”, but its the mere fact that wen kids dont have proper parents teachin them right, they r gonna go straight 2 the tv. nd its a damn shame that one of the small amounts of black stations on tv today (that also claims to be here for us; “Black Entertainment Television”) degrades us as ignant, whores, and ghetto! its sad!! and its not even original! it shuld either change its ways, or shut down. nd i think that if IF ENOUGH OF US STOP WATCHIN IT, IT WILL GET THE MESSAGE ND CHANGE.
lets do it 4 the sake of african americans everywhere nd show them (BET, nd others *megan*) that we r proud to be black nd we won’t stand 4 it!

I use to watch BET when I was younger, It has changed for the worse. There use to be many political shows and jazz shows, history moments and a few sitcoms. Now, half naked women, music videos and some of the dumbest reality television I have ever seen. The Boondocks, hit the nail on the head with this one. Let’s get this station to change the mess it has created.
