♫ NEWS: LIL MAMA ON THE LACK OF FEMALE MCs / OMARION DROPPED? / NE-YO BORED WITH R&B / J.HUD ALBUM DUE IN SEPT.
Sunday, April 20, 2008
In a recent interview with Realtalkny, rapper Lil Mama spoke on the lack of female rappers in the music game now-a-days. The 18 year-old old says:
..Like if you look around now, one of the biggest things in hip-hop is the eye candy in the videos. So when you see a female hip-hop artist you expect her to be eye candy. …I think that by coming out at the age of 17 sort of helped me out, because if I would have came out at 19 or 20, they would have probably been like you need to wear this, you need to wear that…
Lil Mama’s debut album, Voice of The Young People, is out on April 29th.
WAS OMARION DROPPED BY COLUMBIA?

According to AOL Black Voices, word is Omarion been dropped by his label Columbia Records.
A source at the label confirmed to the BV Buzz that the Sony imprint decided to drop the former B2K lead singer.
Omarion (real name: Omari Ishmael Grandberry) signed as a solo artist to Columbia Records after B2K broke up in December 2003. His boy band was actually signed to Sony’s Epic division.
The 23-year-old singer released two solo CDs for the record company, including 2005’s ‘O’ and 2006’s ‘21.’ Both albums were certified gold.
In December of 2007, Omarion partnered with rapper Bow Wow on the CD, ‘Face Off.’ To date, the set has sold 341,137 units according to SoundScan. [read more]
NEYO SAYS HE’S BORED W/ R&B

Ne-Yo during a performance earlier this year. (Photo: Splash News)
R&B singer/songwriter Ne-Yo says he is “a little bored” with urban music. Check out what he said when he was speaking on his new album..
“There’s some stuff on there that sounds like something the Beatles might’ve done,” Ne-Yo told Billboard. “There’s some stuff on there that sounds like something Billy Joel might’ve done. I can’t do just straight urban music no more, because to be completely honest with you, I’m a little bored with it. I’m just moving with what music excites me now.”
Ne-Yo’s new release, Year of the Gentleman, is due June 24 from Def Jam.
JENNIFER HUDSON’S ALBUM DUE IN SEPT.

Jennifer Hudson’s debut album will finally be released on September 30 on Arista Records according to her manager Miguel Melendez. ‘Bout time, huh?

It will definite be interesting to see how Lil Mama sells. I don’t know if she has really built up a fanbase yet. That song with Chris Brown seems to get a lot of radio play though.
Even though I am not a fan of Omarion. I think he is just as good as Chris Brown. He just hasn’t really tapped into the potential he has as an artist, and he never will if he keeps collaborating with Bow Wow every year.
Ne-Yo is right R&B is hella boring right now because the quality and feeling is gone. I haven’t heard really good R&B since the 90’s to be honest.
I really hope Jennifer Hudson brings something different to the table. She’s talented but I really don’t want to just hear her wailing over the radio.

Sorry O but you need to find something else to do boo boo.
Ne-Yo I agree, urban music has been bad for a minute now but you have got to open your ears, there’s a lot of other different type of music out here that’s good. I luv R&B that’s why I keep the oldies in all the time but I don’t limit myself to hip hop/r&B or I would be doing myself a great injustice.

Kids will buy it. Lil’ Mama is at an awkward stage as being a young female MC. She doesn’t want to come off too mature like Jean Grae or too raunchy like Lil Kim and Foxy did it so she has no choice but to continue putting out these kiddie songs but real talk she can rap though lol

Neyo how can you be tired of R&B because there hasn’t been any out since the 90’s. This crapt is not rhythm and blues. I don’t no what it is but it aint soul music. You can’t go in the studio create some ridiculous beats and think that it is soul music. Soul music is just that something that came from your soul. I don’t see a freakum dress really coming from the soul and if it is then the soul is in trouble.

Y’all whine too much about the state of music. There are people out here that out out really creative music but the majority doesn’t support because it is not mainstream. Catchy music sells. Heavy 808 with a southern bounce sells, and the pop electro sound sells. So my thing is to stop complaining and listen to what you like. I did and I’m content. I stopped listening to the radio since 2006. I’ve been fine since. I like alot of a mainstream to underground. I’m not prejudice to music that is out of today. I just stop hating.

Lil ma is speaking the truth, its all about image in the industry sadly but thats the way it works.
The obsession with looks is why r&b sucks and so does hip-hop, pop has virtually died. Some days I do think r&b for our generation and the future is dead. Even “r&b singers” aren’t even singing r&b anymore and that says it all.
However there are some r&b gems out there who don’t get the attention them deserve like Tamia, Amel Larrieux etc.
Jhud looks a mess in that pic but I looove her voice, she can out-sang most of the contemporary singers, but September? thats a long time away. As a fan im disappointed.

Wow… I thought Jennifer Hudson was Patti LaBelle.
Two certified Gold albums and you get “dropped” - what does it take these days?
I know that BowWow business was dismal, but he did have some success with them.
Ne-Yo bored with ‘urban’ music? He can expect some backlash from that — and it won’t be good. Much like Alicia Keys and her mistatements, you have to be really careful what you say, folk are so unforgiving.

I feel you Ne-Yo. I think R&B goes through stages. In between those stages it gets boring. We had the bump n’ grind era in the 90s before D’Angelo, Maxwell, and Erykah switched things up a little. Then it got boring again, because record labels tend to seek artists that sound like the already successful artists. We hear about “the next so & so”, or the “cross between Artist A & Artist B”…Then the market becomes saturated with pretenders. Radio doesn’t help, because half the time they are too scared to be versatile and play a little variety. I really don’t know what’s going on right now with R&B, but I can never give up on it. As a music lover, I just sit back and be patient. If I’m someone like Ne-Yo, then I go out and try to be that pioneer, push the envelope & produce something new.
Test the waters dude.

Omarion may have been dropped but his career us definetly far from being over he’s extremely talented and will be placed at a label god feels is the right one for him.. Had a chance to meet him and he’s a very laid back humble dude and is fine as hell he’s really a nice guy.. And for all this b2k stuff he didn’t have to stay in a boy band for the rest of his life if his dream was to be a solo artist thats called growing up… Neyo us right half if music us garbage right with a few exceptions.. He’s also a very talented songwriter and half if the tunes you was snapping your fingers to neyo wrote it it for that artist he needs to go back to being a songwriter thats where the most money is… I see jenuder Hudson doing really well I’ll be buying her cd.. I wish all of these artist luck especially omarion thats my baby…with his sexy fine self

Lil’ Mama may wind up being one of the best female mc’s. She definitely has a flow; now if she could stop rapping about lip gloss, ice cream and school buses! But she has a point, if they dress her up all hootchie-fied, she’d sell better. Sex sells, even if it’s wrong.
Who’s checking for Omarion anymore? No one that I know. So, if he fell off, it’s time to change the game for the better. And none of that partnering with some whack rapper who thinks he’s more than what he is.
Jennifer Hudson will probably have a real (good) R&B album, and it won’t sell much because it won’t be as manufactured as some of the newer well known artists. Not that I don’t like some of the music played on radio, but for the most part, you’ve heard one song you’ve heard them all.

I think the best of RnB was the 90’s it was the era in which I grew up in and I loved it then and miss it now. Back then it seemed like the artist actually sang with passion and it was all computerized as it is now. It wasn’t much about dancing per se but there are a few out now that I like. I think with so many people trying to crossover into mainstream they like to appeal to a pop sound. IMaybe now the do it more so for the money and not the love of it. When listen to artist like Al Green and Marvin Gaye even though they are from an older generation they sung with great passion that you could feel it. I’m glad that Mary is still going strong and reppin from the 90’s though.

In my opinion, I’ll have to say that the 70’s and mid-80’s was an era of great R&B. Like someone else stated above, the music today sounds so cookie-cutter. Back in the day, you could tell one artist from the next - they had their own style and it wasn’t about shaking their butts -they could actually sing! I’m not putting today’s artists down because people like what they like, but I’ll take the oldies any day!

the 70s-90s was good r&B. personally, i’m a huge fan of the 90s r&B (like someone else stated, total, en vogue, d’angelo etc. made that period of R&B amazing and i have a soft spot for that era). R&B IS boring now and whether ne-yo is jumping on the bandwagon or not, he’s still right. is he doing anything to change it? maybe a little. i liked his debut album personally. in terms of mainstream r&b, he’s one of the only interesting artists. i think usher’s confessions was one of the best mainstream r&b albums of the 2000’s BUT even his new material just sounds boring and nowhere near on the level of that album. non-mainstream r&b isn’t boring (i.e. van hunt). the pt. though is that mainstream r&b used to be interesting, is now boring, and ppl should start supporting non-mainstream r&b so that we can change this

Mainstream R&B has integrated with Pop music. Also true blue R&B is no longer relevant since Hip-Hop came along. Hip-Hop destroyed R&B because that is no longer the genre that young folks flocked too. The R&B in the 80’s such as Anita and Luther were tor the grown folks and record labels tried to find a way for R&B to stay relevant for the younger audience. So “New Jack Swing” Era was in full force and that what has kept R*B relevant and that was to create the hip-hop/R&B genre. That was the era I’m familiar with and can relate to it better because of memories. Jade, Xscape, SWV, TLC, Guy You gotta thank Teddy Riley for that or else R&B would expire completely. As For Ne-Yo well he has the right to his opinion however Ne-yo hasn’t been doing music that long to be making that statement and to me that was just an underhanded statement for him to be making more money by branching off because doing the R&B he was doing was getting him payed lol but that “Irreplaceable” song got him dough because it was a pop hit! Anyways I think Ne-yo is mad talented but we’ll see how his new sound goes.

@69- I think consumers are speaking….record sales are not just low because of digital downloads. There are still millions of people who do not even have computers in their homes. The power of the CD is still strong, believe me. It’s simply that, look with the economy being slow, every dollar counts for every American, especially music lovers.
And if it sounds like garbage, I am not buying it, WE ARE NOT BUYING IT….an artist is not tricking me into buying an album that only has one decent song, and 11 other tracks filled with no content-absolutely not! I think if you just consider how album sales have been decreasing with time, you will find that the average music consumer, is way more intelligent then the Music Industry believes. Record Labels are making a big mistake by continuing to force garbage music on the consumer, blaming low sales on illegal internet activity-false analysis.
And the consumer does not have any control over whats played on radio, because every commercial radio station play list is dictated by the higher authorities that be. So while a song that plays 100 times a day on radio, may seem like a reflection of what the consumer really wants, that’s not necessarily the case. Because then when the artist drops the album, that album may sell well below desired expectations- why? BECAUSE THE OVERALL MESSAGE OF THE MUSIC IS GARBAGE!
Point & Case Example: Ray J- he is high on the “charts” with his lame song “Sexy”
but his opening sales, were 37,000 I think…..GARBAGE
Point & Case Example: Alicia Keys- 3 million records in less then 6 months. Wonderful Artist, Meaningful Music!
WE THE CONSUMER ARE NOT STUPID!!! WE AIN’T BUYING IT!!!!!…LOL
