♫ NEWS: LIL MAMA ON THE LACK OF FEMALE MCs / OMARION DROPPED? / NE-YO BORED WITH R&B / J.HUD ALBUM DUE IN SEPT.

In a recent interview with Realtalkny, rapper Lil Mama spoke on the lack of female rappers in the music game now-a-days. The 18 year-old old says:

..Like if you look around now, one of the biggest things in hip-hop is the eye candy in the videos. So when you see a female hip-hop artist you expect her to be eye candy. …I think that by coming out at the age of 17 sort of helped me out, because if I would have came out at 19 or 20, they would have probably been like you need to wear this, you need to wear that…

Lil Mama’s debut album, Voice of The Young People, is out on April 29th.

  3. a.k.a. new yorker

the 70s-90s was good r&B. personally, i’m a huge fan of the 90s r&B (like someone else stated, total, en vogue, d’angelo etc. made that period of R&B amazing and i have a soft spot for that era). R&B IS boring now and whether ne-yo is jumping on the bandwagon or not, he’s still right. is he doing anything to change it? maybe a little. i liked his debut album personally. in terms of mainstream r&b, he’s one of the only interesting artists. i think usher’s confessions was one of the best mainstream r&b albums of the 2000′s BUT even his new material just sounds boring and nowhere near on the level of that album. non-mainstream r&b isn’t boring (i.e. van hunt). the pt. though is that mainstream r&b used to be interesting, is now boring, and ppl should start supporting non-mainstream r&b so that we can change this

  4. a.k.a. new yorker

@math you sure about that b/c “stay with me” sounds different from “time” which sounds different from “so sick”..you get the drift. idk about his most recent album but the songs from the first album didn’t all sound the same

  5. Chika

LMAO @ NeYo being “so sick of love songs” literally)))

  6. blackisbeautiful

Mainstream R&B has integrated with Pop music. Also true blue R&B is no longer relevant since Hip-Hop came along. Hip-Hop destroyed R&B because that is no longer the genre that young folks flocked too. The R&B in the 80′s such as Anita and Luther were tor the grown folks and record labels tried to find a way for R&B to stay relevant for the younger audience. So “New Jack Swing” Era was in full force and that what has kept R*B relevant and that was to create the hip-hop/R&B genre. That was the era I’m familiar with and can relate to it better because of memories. Jade, Xscape, SWV, TLC, Guy You gotta thank Teddy Riley for that or else R&B would expire completely. As For Ne-Yo well he has the right to his opinion however Ne-yo hasn’t been doing music that long to be making that statement and to me that was just an underhanded statement for him to be making more money by branching off because doing the R&B he was doing was getting him payed lol but that “Irreplaceable” song got him dough because it was a pop hit! Anyways I think Ne-yo is mad talented but we’ll see how his new sound goes.

    @ #1

    “Gum ball” lmao

Music in general is boring, nowadays, its this way cuz we accept it…lets stop settleing for ok…when we as consumers deserve greatness, we go out in masses and buy an album for that 1 radio hit…stop it I say lol

  10. Damn sucks to be O…but I’m sure he will get another deal soon.

  11. SAxlerod

For all who don’t about hip hop females and record industry, Lil Mama, just dropped some true knowledge on you and I’ll repeat – “no one cares about what hip hop is about…they only care about charting…..”

  12. Ant$

i’m bored with urban music as well….and i love urban music and hiphop since the early-mid 80′s

  13. JAMIE872006

OMARION…WHO CARES HE SUCK TO ME ANYWAY

I CAN’T WAIT TELL NE-YO ALBUM COMES OUT.

  14. Star

@69- I think consumers are speaking….record sales are not just low because of digital downloads. There are still millions of people who do not even have computers in their homes. The power of the CD is still strong, believe me. It’s simply that, look with the economy being slow, every dollar counts for every American, especially music lovers.

And if it sounds like garbage, I am not buying it, WE ARE NOT BUYING IT….an artist is not tricking me into buying an album that only has one decent song, and 11 other tracks filled with no content-absolutely not! I think if you just consider how album sales have been decreasing with time, you will find that the average music consumer, is way more intelligent then the Music Industry believes. Record Labels are making a big mistake by continuing to force garbage music on the consumer, blaming low sales on illegal internet activity-false analysis.

And the consumer does not have any control over whats played on radio, because every commercial radio station play list is dictated by the higher authorities that be. So while a song that plays 100 times a day on radio, may seem like a reflection of what the consumer really wants, that’s not necessarily the case. Because then when the artist drops the album, that album may sell well below desired expectations- why? BECAUSE THE OVERALL MESSAGE OF THE MUSIC IS GARBAGE!

Point & Case Example: Ray J- he is high on the “charts” with his lame song “Sexy”
but his opening sales, were 37,000 I think…..GARBAGE

Point & Case Example: Alicia Keys- 3 million records in less then 6 months. Wonderful Artist, Meaningful Music!

WE THE CONSUMER ARE NOT STUPID!!! WE AIN’T BUYING IT!!!!!…LOL

  15. Anonymiss

Quite frankly we tired of Stargate that’s why.Shut up Neyo.

  16. blackisbeautiful

    @ 74

Not always though. We hate on Cassie all day but fail to realize that Cassie was a top ten myspace artist before she was sign. Obviously people liked her if she was getting that many hits on her music myspace page. Diddy felt that if people on myspace was giving her that much love than he didn’t have to do too much to market her because she was already well established as marketing herself on Myspace. The same goes for Souljah Boy he is not a conspiracy to ruin Hip-Hop lol he was your everyday youtuber, myspacer, and soundclicker striving to get signed and he did because that little boy had alot of hits on youtube with his dance. So in many cases, we the consumers have alot of power of what’s hot. I mean Southern Hip-Hop has taken over because the young kids like it. I remember when I use to listen to the radio, they played “White Tee” by Dem Franchize Boyz to see if the people up in her Chicago was feeling and they did! Listeners=consumers. So any other event you can’t always blame artist, they also want to get payed and if “super manning that hoe” takes to make a hit why not? I know it’s not inspirational but what does that say about today’s generation of music? hmmmm? I think that’s a good question.

  17. marvin

I feel the same as Ne-yo, the artists that can sing aren’t heard on the radio, lil mama can rap but i hate the way she dresses, Jennifer Hudson – don’t see what the big deal is about her.

  18. Star

@76 You have a valid point, but at the end of the day, clicking on a myspace or a You tube video is free.

So while Cassie may have had high traffic through her myspace, the last I read, I don’t even think her latest album went gold ( 500,000). Correct me, if I am wrong, but again, the consumer has the final say when the album drops, we speak very loud and clear in that respect.

Yeah, I may click on a post about Cassie to see what’s good, but I am not buying her album. Because if “loving a man all the way down” is all she has to offer on a track, I’m really good with all of that.

But Yes, you are right about the consumer having the power to determine what records are celebrated most in the music world. Absolutely.

  19. Nutin But Da Truph

This is the truth and it may hurt- But, omarian has embraced black music and not black women. To and marcus houston are always featuring spanish women in their videos as if they hate the reflection. Of themselves in Sisters. Spanish women are very beautiful as sisters are, but omarion wants to make his black hair look ethically something else with those wack side burns and braids. In forgetting the sistas, they’ve forgotten him. The end results, columbia reminded him who his greasy ass is. Black.

  21. makita

Lil Mama makes a good point but to be honest she can’t rap to me I really don’t like nothing she does just not my type of music. to kiddy
J Hud shouldve been came out shoot i forgot all about her Cd but Im going to cop it homegirl got a voice.

Omarian who gives a damn he’s gay gay gay!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. STLCHICK

There have always been a shortage of female rappers in hip-hop and most of the ones that are semi-popular are a disgrace to women (Lil Kim, Foxy Brown, Trina, Khia, etc.) Although some women look at being sexually explicit as liberating, these artists, at times, do not know how not to cross the line from liberation to degradation.

Omarion is BORING!!!! He won’t sell nearly as much as he did w/ B2K, not even w/ Bow Wow.

    J. Hud drops on my b-day!!!! Can’t wait for this. I love her voice!

I think Ne-Yo is very talented, attractive no but talented.

  23. Kenyana

I will be her ablum being that I feel she speaks the truth. period

  24. Chris H.

I’m reading these comments about Ne-Yo and i’m like chill get off of his jock. People are so quick to say that he is arrogant for saying R&B is boring when its the truth… Please name 10 R&B artists in the past two years (i’ll evem give you 4) who came out with an original song… Only a few R&B/Soul artists have actually had me fallin for their music such as, J. Holiday, Chrisette Michele, Steph Jones just to name a few. The big picture is nobody sells anything worth meaning now-a-days and that reaches into the other urban genre Hip Hop/Rap. There are fake rappers and fake singers in the industry, and we can all point them out, but don’t try to shatter people’s reputation when they actually put out legit music.

P.S. There is a difference between Soul and R&B… DON’T CONFUSE THE TWO!!!

Examples of Soul: Jill Scott, Chrisette Michele, Erykah Badu (debatable), Musiq Soulchild

Examples of R&B: Alicia Keys, Mary J.Blige, Keyshia Cole, Ne-Yo

  25. L My comments are important

I feel bad for O hopefully he can get on another label or better ye start his own. Sign me O lol!

  26. Miss. Tiandez Jones

when is NeYo gonna come out the closet. HES BORING, bout r&b is boring..anyways, its probably boring to him because all his songs sound the damn same!
Omarion does sell records, so it just makes sense that he’d get dropped, sorry little girls, im sure u can still catch him on ur local corner or malls singing for some change.
Can’t wait for the JHud album, her voice is amazing.
And lil Mama, although I can’t stand her, does a make a great point. However, i rather see the eye candy rappers, then her bad fashion sense all up in the videos. But ye she has a point, shes young. So lets see how long she sticks to this image before she becomes like them eye candy rappers.

  27. VONDORAUN

I AGREE WITH 1 ON THE OMARION COMMENT JHUD U BEAUTIFUL BABY DO YA DO…

OMARIONS WAS UGLY AND LACKED STAR QUALITY FOR ME FROM THE GET GO ANYWAYS HES GROWN N ALL BUT HE JUST GIVES ME LITTLE BOY YA KNOW HAHAHA!!!!!

IF HE WOULD HAVE KEPT HIS BIG HEAD IN CHECK :THEN AGAIN HOW COULD HE EH EMM: B2K AND ALL OF EM COULD BE SOO BIG RIGHT NOW I MEAN ON THE DISNEY CHANNEL AND ER THING HAHAHAHA! BUT OH WELL GUESS HE BETTER DO THAT REUNION SHOW ON VH1 HUH LMAO!!!

  28. Malcolm

Neyo is horrible he cannot compare to artits like chrisette michelle, ledisi, jill scott, raheem devaughn and anthony david, he is apart of the movement that has popped out r and b into things like irreplaceable and hate that i love u. Back in the day there were quality duets like we can’t be friends and all cried out with soul. Ne-yo must be bored with himself

  29. Ebony564

I love lil mama… she is so smart…. she talks with sense…. you have people thats being singing and rapping well… but when you seat them down and ask them questions… they sound like they dont have sense whats so ever…. just stupid… cant communicate…. that why i dont really invest in magazines with celebrity interviews because the celebrities cant hold a conversation if theyre life depended on it.

Neyos another person who can hold my attention

Omarion…. should not have put out a CD with Bow Wow… wrong move…. since you been drop… get Bow Wow to collaborate with you now

  30. KCOOL

it seem like white artist are trying to get more urban and black artist are trying to go more pop. Ne-yo I know the big money is in pop…So I don’t blame U for trying to get dem dollars. U better before your time is up. Because the way the music industry is going now. Its here today gone tommorow. Like Beyonce he trying to do everything now before its too late. Do U ne-yo. Don’t listen to nobody. U have the talent to do it.

  31. Ebony564

woooooooow Jennifer did you gain weight? Keep the weight please…. I never tell people to lose weight….. but the wig makes you look older…. Ive seen her in person… shes very nice

  32. G

    Neyo’s comment translated…”I wanna cross-over.”

  33. itzzzkimmm

wow Lil Mama is so right. I thank her for being such a strong-minded young woman. She stands up for what she wants. You go girl!

  34. Buffy

There’s nothing Neyo does that can even be remotely comparable to The Beatles…so I’m lost…?!
J Hud is just a belter and her record is going to be a quiet project, likely a VERY VERY intimate one…lol meaning, she’ll get the satisfaction of having done a record, but it won’t be successful… And, then it might… Who knows…I think she could do very well fronting a rock band a la The Gossip. Jennifer was hot with the rocker dude on “Fashion Rocks.” It was crazy the way they vibed…

    Lil Mama is lame.

  35. ty

    Wait!

doesn’t neyo write songs for a lot of these r&b artists and then he turns around and says rI&b music is boring?
    smh!

  36. Perez

neyo is just doing what timberland did, He too will be reminded that he’s black. Good luck with the other genre. Oh by the way Neyo, you made R&B boring. So hand in hand I wasn’t feeling you either cause you were boring.

  37. CypHER Jones

hmmm…smart girl….(in ref to L’il Mama video) …I wish her all the best.

  38. Jennifer Hudson Fan

    Go Head JHUD

  39. JUDAH

In other words Ne-Yo is saying that he sees the writing on the wall that hip-hop and R&B are being manipulated by the studio heads in regards to what type of songs the artists craft, who the songs are geared to, and how the music will be marketed. All possible moneymaking outlets for these black artists are being purposefully minimized so that the artists can make the least amount of money possible. The label heads’ plans are to slowly suck the “urban music” genre dry before they can fuse it with pop and eventually destroy any partitions between the genres. It’s damn near illegal for black music to talk about black issues anymore and these black artists are looking to write for caucasian pop and country music stars. It’s a business move for Ne-Yo even more than a creative one. He’s going to diversify his portfolio. As far as what he says about making “Beatles music”, lol, I don’t think he even knows what that means.

  40. Angelicious07

Uhm excuse me Ne-yo , your ass is boring anyway…..NEXT!

  41. DH

These labels have gotten ridiculous. Omarion released two solid mature r & b albums amongst a radio playlist filled with crap, and he gets dropped. He should be able to secure another deal soon.

  42. David Washinton

Lil Mama speaks the truth. I might buy her album just to see what she has to say. But, she said Lil Wanye said the game is changin; but, ain’t he the same one talking about having sex with girls, and the eye candy in his videos (???) Omarion feel sorry for him, he needs to seperate from Bow Wow cause he’s bringing his career down, his “0″, and “21″ days we’re way better than this little “Jump Off” thing. Ne-Yo Bored with R&B I feel the same way, I only listen to a few R&B artist, and the rest bore me. J Hudson, I guess, I never really got all that into her musically, vocally yes, musically I don’t know what she has to bring to the game.

  43. dd

i feel what ll mama is sayin. the lil girl got a mad freestyle flow, she is just a little young and doesn’t want to be a slutbag and send out the wrong message to the kids.. i hope everything works out for her because he is truly talented in my opinion, i just don’t know if she will have longevity.

    Omarion….boo..ur ass washed up

JHud…mmm I just don’t know, her voice is a little too much for me to listen to a mainstream album. She should try broadway, but I bet that heffa would have u crying if she sang some gospel!! LOL

  45. PROVOST...

Lil Mama is telling the truth, and I’m proud of her for being steadfast in holding to her value system. It’s funny to see how many people ADMIT that they so readily dismiss what she has to say because her album sales and fan base aren’t world-tour ready. Your attitudes are exactly what she’s talking about. I swear, stupidity is running rampant…

  46. D-RuMz (aka V.Slick) BRICK CITY 973!

Did anyone ever worder why you never see Lil Mama and Bow Wow in the same place at the same time?…..hmmmm. On a serious note though, the video eye candy thing is true but that is the way it has always been throughout all genres of music. It has to do with society and the labels who control the money, so sadly that’s the way it’s always gonna be. Music as a whole is getting waterd down because of this damn kiddy/teen movement crap the labels are churning out. The same Autotune vocal effect, the same 808 driven beats and the same wack ass “eh eh ehh” songwriting by The Dream. Kids are the ones downloading, adults for the most part buy music if it’s good music. I’ll be happy when this Soulja Boy/stupid dance/snap ya fingas/Autotune/Lil Wanye crap is over. Wack music= youth inspired to make more wack music.

  47. D-RuMz (aka V.Slick) BRICK CITY 973!

And the sad thing now is the established older artists are jumping on the wack wagon because of competition actually adding to the problem. More and more I find myself listening to music from 8 years ago. So if Lil Mama is gonna be “The Voice of The Young People” then the young people should be seen and not heard. lol

  48. AWJ12687

Blah @ Ne-Yo I don’t wanna hear anything that sound like the Beatles or Billy whoever. Stick with what you have been doing but then again do something out of the ordinary sounds like a real artist. Still I don’t want to hear it. Great J. Hud News doe,

  49. Shawn08

For those of you tired of R&B, and want to hear a refreshing R&B CD; buy DAY26. Their album is the truth. NO LIE… It takes you back to good R&B Beats, Singing, Topics, etc.

BEST GROUP CD OUT RIGHT NOW IS DAY26!!!

  50. blakluv

I AM TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT NEYO THINKS THE BEATLES WERE? THEY WERE CO-OPTING R&B BIG TIME AND THEY WILL ADMIT THAT THEMSELVES. MOST OF THE BRITISH ARTIST LOVE R&B TO DEATH. ANOTHER QUESTION? HAS HE HEARD ANY REAL SOULFUL R&B LATELY? I’M TALKING BOUT CURTIS MAYFIELD, STEVIE WONDER, SMOKY AND THE QUIET STORM TYPE OF R&B LATELY? I MEAN, IF HE HAS PUT OUT MUSIC OF THAT CALIBER SO FAR, AND IS BORED, WELL THEN, BUT TO SAY, HE IS BORED WITH “URBAN” MUSIC? THAT JUST SOUNDS A LITTLE BIT CHEZ -CHEZ TO ME, IF U KNOW WHAT I MEAN….LOL!

  51. linda

I WILL NEVER WEAR RED AGAIN. JENNIFER IT DOES MAKE YOU LOOK LIKE A BIG JUG OF KOOL-AIDE. BUT I LOVE YOUR MUSIC. DID LI MAMA EVER MORN HER MOTHERS DEATH. YOUNG PEOPLE TRULY JUST DO THEM.
