♫ Album Review: MARIAH CAREY – E=MC² ♫
Mariah Carey, who has just beat out Elvis for having a whopping 18 #1 singles, releases her 11th studio album, E=MC² this week.
Although I wasn’t initially impressed with Mariah’s first single choice, “Touch My Body” (or it’s obnoxiously juvenile video), or the original title of the album (remember That Chick?), the song grew on me and I was eager to hear more of the material from the release of the album. The cleverly chosen title means “(E) Emancipation (=) of (MC) Mariah Carey (²) to the second power.”
I think Mimi stuck to her guns and did exactly what I thought she was going to do: stick to the same formula that she did on 2005′s Emancipation of Mimi. But if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it. Mariah garnered herself some huge success with that album, so it doesn’t surprise me that she kind of went with what she knew her fans would love. Again, she used the team that gave her so much “umph” the last time, with productions from Bryan-Michael Cox and Jermaine Dupri, while slipping in some current hitmakers like Danja on the infectious, “Migrate” (listen) and The Dream for her first single.
Impressive isn’t really the word I’d use for the album, even though I think it has a lot of catchy hooks and fun songs. I think that Mariah’s only real intention this time around was to get that #1 single out so she can break some records. You can bet that just like Janet’s Discipline, E=MC² will not be Mariah’s last album, seeing as though both of them just signed new deals with Def Jam.

I hope it’s good. I haven’t bought a cd in a minute now, I only buy albums of artists I can trust to put out good music so I plan on getting this one. I really loved Emancipation of Mimi. So I hope it lives up.
I am interested to see what the album will sound like but honestly not overly excited to get it. I like Touch my body, but cant stand Migrate so her status is not looking too good with me
I wasn’t really big on “Touch My Body” when it first came out, but it grew on me too. My best friend is the BIGGEST Mariah Carey fan there is, so I know I’ll be hearing the album tomorrow.

Out of all the songs I think I only like 4 of them. IDK Emancipation of MiMi is soooooooo much better than this one. When I first bought it I never took it out my CD player. Maybe if I listen to E=MC² more often it might grow on me.
And as the name e=mc2 suggests the album is a continuation of Emancipation, but it has some major differences, there are some club tracks on the album so obviously mariah wanted to make the album appealing to a wide audience
But also there are the classic mariah songs like Wish you well, which is reminiscent of her Vision Of Love era.
This album is well worth it and I think it will definately break records it has so many potential singles, you dont get all those fillers that most artists have, just great songs.
The album is pretty good. I mean it really is “Emancipation” to the second power. A lot of it sounds like it could have been on that cd. She gets props for doing the damn thing. But being 29 I am looking more for the new Robin Thicke, Estelle, or some Maxwell.
The album is ok, but those weak first two singles could cost her millions i like the song “cruise crontrol” thats got to be my favourite off the album but im kinda still sitting on fence, on whether to buy her album or not.
I likes so far still listening. Side affects sounds different from her other stuff.
And yeah I am still hooked on Emancipation and if i had to compare them I would def go with Emacipation over the new one. Just my opinion. Nothing more nothing less.
I’ve heard the album. I will agree with Brian and say that I am not impressed. The album is not horrible but it’s definitely not her best work. Normally, I can listen to a Mariah Carey album all the way through but on this I had to skip through songs.
“Migrate” gives me a migraine. I liked most of the slower songs though. Don’t expect any power ballads on this one because you won’t find it. I would have liked to have heard a mix of the Emancipation of Mimi with Butterfly but that didn’t happen…but I guess that’s just me. I still like Mariah though.

The album is indeed a continuation of Emacipation and I thoroughly recommend it to any Mimi fan. This years It’like that=Migrate, Shake it off=Cruise Control, We belong together=I Stay in Love, Fly like a bird=I wish you well…..if you listen to the album carefully you realize she has truly stuck to a formula lol
although the music and production is extremely good I have to say lyrically its a bit sloppy and you won’t find any of the big vocal numbers like ‘Mine Again’, ‘Circles’ etc on this album so if you want to hear the ‘voice’-this ain’t for you. But if you want a consistent album thats enjoyable to listen to…head to itunes NOW!!!!

i’m sorry but mariah fell off a while ago. she doesn’t make music with substance anymore. even her non-substance music (like “honey”) was better than this nonsense. no creativity, no originality but the masses will eat it up. i agree w/whoever said that maxwell’s, estelle’s, and robin’s new albums will be the ones to watch. not this garbage

Mariah Carey makes me think a lot about race. She just seems like a sleezy white girl to me. Her african-american colleauges at the same age carry themselves in a much more regal and respected way. Brian put it very nicely with “obnoxiously juvenile” single… I expect the album will be the same. Mariah Carey needs to get with it. She’s not young anymore.
Album is fire, MUCH better than amancipation. Lots of song 17 on the version I have.
Very Modern, but still Mariah.. Her voice sounds better than ever and she did a-lot of writting on this.
Side Effects is my joint right now, Bye Bye is also good, even though its a recycled beat..
There ais some trash on here.. about 4 songs could have stayed on the cutting room floor. But a great album indeed and worthy come-back.

as a maiah fan i am disappointed, I’ve had this cd for two weeks now and it’s still growing on me, best songs on the cd is no doubt “cruise control” and “thanx for nothing”. “cruise control” should be a single that song is definately a winner. the cd isn’t as horrible as some, but it could have been sooooooo much better. i mean i know i’ll grow to like it, just like i had to grow to like beyonce’s b-day, but honestly this mariah album is worse than her rainbow cd. But i guess she knows her fan base is big enuf for her to go platinum even despite this album being close to hot garbage. I pretty sure the tour will be the bomb though, i’m definately buying tickets for the e=mc2 tour.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! This album is wack as hell. She could’ve did much better. She tried to make it sound like the last album. This is just my opinion……….It doesn’t sound like she put her all into this album. You have to be a real Mariah fan to like EVERYTHING she comes out with. I don’t know what everyone is hearing but this is not her best she could’ve at least did her famous high note. She needs to get away from Jermain Durat. It’s too many childish sounding songs on this album especially “Touch My Body” I’m surprised she went #1 with that single.
This Albums ia truly a masterpiece and the title was fitting because its similar to Emancipation and to the second power.
This is her best R&B album to date and shes gonna smash records this year with this joint! Watch and see!

I went to an album listening for this album a couple weeks ago in NYC and let’s just say everyone was busy watching Oprah on T.V. by song number 7. No lie. I like Mariah, but all the songs just started to sound the same after awhile.
I like 3 songs out of like 13. What’s really up with the “I-wanna-be-down” songs: Side Effects, Migrate, Cruise Control, honestly Mariah you are ABOVE I repeat ABOVE this. Also, “For the Record” using the commercial music for your perfume as a song, tasteless in many fashions. Really Mimi???? Really?
I never thought I’d say this *gasp* but Janet’s album is much better.
This album is truly great!! I[‘m so serious.. Its not as retro or “live” sounding as Emancipation but to me it hones in on more of her signature sounds.. Its better than Emancipation!!

I don’t know about this album.
Some catch songs…but like everybody said. I think Mariah wanted to make sure she got her #1s and that was it.
All in all, I can’t complain about the music from our legends like Mariah, Janet, and Ms. Badu.

@27 if you actually listened to the album there are songs with the famous high notes, wish you well is an example. Touch my body and migrate aren’t songs to judge the album by.
There are some very personal songs on this album; Wish You Well is about forgiving those who hurt you (its speculated that mariah is talkig about her sister in this song), Side effects has some deep lyrics which deal with her relationship with tommy mottola, Bye Bye is a song about lossing someone you love, for mariah that was her father who died (that song made me cry my eyes out).
I think its unfair to say that the album is just about hit singles because she has songs on there that are really meaningful and will touch a lot of people. Mariah’s motive was to make songs that everyone can relate to and I think she definately did that.

the thing is she listens to hip hop and Gospel – most of her 90′s songs even though she wrote them she dont like them (Hero, i dont wanna cry) she done with those songs shes made her name showing people wat she can do and now she wants to do what she likes. At the end of the Day Tommy dont a BRILLIANT join promoting her as pop and as the voice but that wasnt her and its obviusly evident on butterfly her first LP without Tommy. Look at Leona i got tracks from her before she won xfactor and they werent no damn bleeding love. But Leona is not in a position in her career to do wat she likes but 18 years in the game Mariah is and she not only likes them the world does or they wouldnt be buying the albums still.

Yeah I have just been holding it down waiting on these guys to pull out some substance. I don’t dislike Mariah I just think there is lane WIDE open for good music right now – I mean I actually love MJB, Akeys, Jill Scott, Erykah and the work they put out this time. Once I heard “Touch My Body” from Mimi I knew that I would be waiting to hear Estelle, Robin or Maxwell and I just can’t even cop Mimi this time around. I got be choosy with the itunes dollars…lol

If she would have stayed with Walter Afansief, Narada “dick in the booty” Michael Walden, and David Foster…Were would she be now ? While Lazy Whitney tries to get her life together, Christina aguilera plays mommy, Vanessa williams does Tv and Broadway and Mommy gigs. Mary J. continues to Not write songs but emote for other writers, Monica turns more into a hoodrat and Brandy is M.I.A. Mariah continues to bring the heat.
Is it possible for the hatin to stop……Her voice is beautiful, the closest thang we have to a legend, think Minnie Rippleton with an Urban swag, and Denice Williams.
Mariah is an Icon to Cherish. If you want Old mariah….go to her older songs and enjoy “I am Free, Vanishing, If it’s over”.
