Estelle covers the new issue of Bleu Magazine and talks exclusively to contributing writer Lenox Magee, on how the UK does not know how to promote black artists. She also speaks out on her feelings to being compared to Lauryn Hill,
“I think they compare me to her (Lauryn Hill) because I’m dark-skinned and I sing and rap. But, if they’re saying the music is just as great, then compare me all day because I’ll be really happy about that.”
The Spring 2008 issue of BLEU Magazine will hit newstands on April 29th (the same day Estelle’s album hits stores).

Yeah, Craig David is huge in Europe. He has a new album out right now. I don’t know where he is on the charts though. Some people sware Europe is the shit, it’s really not. I never went over there yet. I mostly go to the caribbean (I’m from Guyana), but I don’t think I would be comfortable if I do go.
“It is, what it is….”

@57 it’s produce by wyclef of course it’s going to have a lauryn feel to it.
………………………No one said that Estelle was personally saying that she is comparing herself to Lauryn SO PEOPLE GET OFF IT. She is however no where near Lauryn’s level. LAURYN GET YOURSELF TOGETHER, WE NEED YOU BACK ! EX-FACTOR HAS TO BE ONE OF THE GREATEST SONGS OF ALL TIME.!!!
Where is Ms Dynamite- to me she is an black UK artist that had the most potential to break in the states
if you don’t nkow, please go to iTunes and listen to the music, she’s a great artist! Her show was the bomb in Philly, she made everyone believers. I personally enjoyed her show, she sounds just like she does on the CD. Check her out, of just get the album when it comes out and you won’t be let down, I guarantee! Just check it out online and do another post the day/week her album comes out. Peace
i’d just like to say that estelle is not “jamaican” and this is how u spell it!
she is british of african origin.
i like estelle, she is true to herself and her culture. everyone has a rite to their own opinion! find out where the girl is coming frm before u all judge! listen to her first single, there must be something about her why peeps like her, so allow the girl!. frm a fellow brit of jamaican origin!
I just can’t get into this chick…mabye after I hear her album

CL! I usually don’t comment about, please stop putting her up here everytime she does something. she is so annoying. i listen to all her songs and it’s garbage. love what she is trying to do but she can’t deliver.
what’s wrong with what she said? BAD COMPREHENSION skills. some of you need to work on that…
she didn’t say she looked like lauryn, nor did she compare herself to lauryn.
other people are comparing her to lauryn and she’s explaining that their reasoning might have to do with her dark skin and what she chooses to do as an artist.

The comments Estelle made about the UK music scene are soooo true, it’s almost painful. If Joss Stone or Amy Winehouse were black, they would not have been viewed as anything unique or special. The fact that they are white girls singing in a ‘black’ style is part of their appeal, like it suddenly becomes something special. It’s that old ELVIS FEVER if you ask me!
It’s not that the British mainstream don’t like Hiphop and R&B, it’s just that they only accept it from the US, Beyonce, Mary J and Alicia have no problem getting airplay, exposure and hit records over here. Record labels are just lazy they figure if people want this type of music, they can get it from the US.
In my eyes Estelle speaks the truth. It’s sad because there is talent here in the UK that people don’t get to see unless they know where to look. Don’t think for a second you guys would be Bleeding Love over there in the States if Leona Lewis wasn’t half white!!!!
Maybe black britsh artists have gotta switch it up a little for the record companies- get their indie rock groove goin and do a reverse Elvis on their asses!!!!
ESTELLE IS NOT JAMAICAN..
