Diddy hosted a Janelle Monae showcase at the Blender Theater at Gramercy on Thursday in NYC. If you’ve been reading CL since the get go, than you should already be familiar with Ms. Monae. She is definitely another rising star too look out for this year. Very refreshing! Guest included: Tyra Banks, Bryan Barber, Q-Tip and more.

i like janelle monae. she brings a totally different energy than most people in the game right now. she’s always in the AUC and she has a beautiful spirit. i’ve seen her perform with no one paying her any attention and she still had great energy and was not diva…diddy’s trying to scoop up everyone huh.

In all fairness, she is usually in a black skirt and a white top. This time, she is wearing WHITE PANTS and a BLACK jacket. Still the same stupid hairstyle, though. I think someone has to be weird to keep wearing the same shit like that over and over again. it makes me scared of them and not really interested in getting to know them or their music.
I’ve never heard any of her music. But I’m tired of seeing her in this uniform striking crazy poses. I guess she isn’t comfortable in the lime light as yet. If she doesn’t switch up her gear, and with her signing with BB, her career won’t be long.

I will admit I wasn’t feeling Janae’s music I heard posted on blogs at first, but out of boredom one day I went to her Myspace one day and I started liking what I heard on her page. I don’t know if it’s because I’m little bored with music (particularly R&B right now), but I’m really digging her eclectic style. Oh yeah and her uniform doesn’t bother. If she puts a out a album that I enjoy, that’s all that matters to me. At least she’s trying to do her own thing and not conform.
I’m a little nervous for her career though, since she’s signed to Bad Boy. I hope everything works out for her at that label. I wonder what happend to her being on Big Boi’s label. I thought she would do well over there, since he has a unique style himself.
the way i see it signing with bad boy has already hindered her because the second suite has not been released and i don’t believe any info has been forthcoming regarding its status.

This should be an interesting pairing with her and Bad Boy. With the success of Danity Kane and Day 26 album releases it looks like Diddy is interested in music again. he admitted on his show that he wasn’t making money from music right now. Seems like he is trying to change that.

Janelle Monae wears the uniform outfit for a reason because she is not here to please you with her looks and fashion, because that is what models are for, she is here to please you with music. Her songs might come off cheesy to some people but if you listen to her music, she uses her character Cindy Mayweather as an underlining political message to the people. In the songs “Many Moons” and “Sincerely Jane” were the two songs that gave a sublminal message but at the same time telling a story of her alter ego Cindy Mayweather. I’m not saying that you guys should love her or like her but at least give the girl a chance. You guys are putting her to the side because she has no fashion sense which is dumb as hell because she intentionally wears that to have you pay attention to her music lol.
