I actually spoke with Ms. Monae the night before the show and had a very brief discussion. She’s very intelligent, friendly, and business minded. I spoke to her about the same things that you guys were complaining about (except the outfit stuff, I’m a dude so I don’t care, haha) in relation to the Bad Boy situation. She actually has 2 release dates this year, the earliest being June. Wondaland is their own record label, and Bad Boy helps in marketing/pushing the product. For those that don’t know, Bad Boy’s distribution comes from Atlantic Records. So that’s 2 companies pushing Janelle Monae product. It’s all in the contract, and I’m pleased on that level. I personally see her as a great artist and I hope that she goes far in what she’s doing ’cause I’m getting a little uneasy seeing grown ass men crankin their soulja boys around me…shit ain’t cool, son. Word up.

I knew someone was going to bring that up lol. Well to be honest the style she had before was not really her. Janelle was going to placed into doing Neo-soul and she would not have stood out but would blend in. The style she has now is more her than the original style. Janelle’s music is very animated however, before she officially became a recording artist, she was broadway singer/actress. So she tried to bridge together a style of broadway singing to an music artist. That’s why when you listen to her music it sounds like show tunes but with a funky flare. Broadway singers sing and bring out their character such as Janelle Monae with Cindy Mayweather. It make more sense for her to do this than to do the Neo-Soul style because that’s too safe and plus she wouldn’t stand out lol. However I can see why you would think that.

That uniform outfit is a way to prevent people from getting distracted by her looks and play attention to music. Also to have people not compare her dress attire to other women. Come on now folks lets be real. I read the comments on CL daily and there are alot of folks that are quick to put down other females and say that they look lile another artist. So she wears a uniform to prevent that chaos. Also she is dresseed head to toe to prevent females from saying that she is objectifying to selling sex. A uniform is just a uniform. It’s not for you to love or hate it’s just a uniform. People get distracted by other things and do pay attention to her essential purpose and that’s her music and tha’ts not just Janelle that’s every artist. I say that’s a very ingenious idea.

I’m SOOOOOOOO tired of seeing half naked “singers” and “dancers” get all this praise when they can’t even sing or dance! People pay attetion to they Beyonces and Rihannas because they are barely dressed and barely have talent(to me). Janelle Monae wants you to pay attetion to her for her music and voice, not for her “amazing legs” or “bootyliciousness” and I LOVE that about her. She will get far.

um can I just say first of all Janelle Monae has several other looks. Google her. There are pictures of her rockin color. If Mariah Carey can wear short skirts every day then why can’t Janelle wear whatever she wants to. And she actually has alot of different styles of singing. As far as diddy goes.
