“I Am My Own Prevention” for the S.T.A.R. Foundation, founded by Jennifer L. Payne, raises awareness of HIV and STD’s in minority females. The female students got to ask the actresses they admire about the difficult questions they have about sex and prevention.

We need more mentors like this. Everybody needs to stand up and take part in our youth. Because this generation( kids who in high school) right now are lost. We need more men to stand up.
Co-sign with # 11. So many of our boys and girls are so lost it’s ridiculous .. almost epidemic. Yeah, people can say that parents need to raise children and I totally agree. But what about those kids that don’t have parents or whose parents are wayward? They need positive reinforcement from the images that they’re getting everyday. Good on these three.

@11 i disagree, this isn’t the first generation to be lost. this goes back way back. the players have changed but the game remain the same. Things have just gotten even more worse. their teen pregancy back in the day. it’s just more obvious today. the things that are happening now is nothing new, just more people are paying attention to it. and that’s the truth.

One of 702 sisters passed away. She was an original founding member of the group back when the did the song with Subway, but wasn’t with them when they blew up. She was a twin of one member.

To the Lost Children Comments….
Yep, they are lost… Just like many generations before them.
Unless you are also helping to teach the children and being part or the solution, you must be part of the probelm. It takes a villiage to raise a child.
@15. I completely agree with you! This is far from being the first lost generation. As a matter of fact, every generation has made that comment about the next. The problems haven’t even changed that much. They were wrestling with drugs and sex as far back as I can remember reading in my history books. Things change and take form in different ways, but essentially the habits remain the same.

I really love and appreciate that they are going out and talking to younger women. I also appreciate this woman who started this foundation. We do have to grab them at a younger age for them to understand. We had a program in high school called S.A.V.E (stop aids via education)

LOVE IT! I work with “lost children” every day in Baltimore. They are still my responsibility even if they are not my biological children. If you can be a positive influence on one child you can make such a difference.

I GOT THE 411
So one of the writers of Girlfriends came to my campus (San Francisco State) last week for a interview in my BECA 550 The Broadcast Interview class, I forgot her name but she is a middle aged white women (I thought that was kind of funny) and we (she and I) talked for about 30 min about Girlfriends. So this is what happed, after the writer’s strike they (her and her writing partner) were informed that the CW was giving the show the boot it was unexpected so they didn’t have any additional episodes taped according to her, Joan’s boyfriend was going to die in Iraq (apparently he has a leading role on a show called Terminator and they needed to write him out of the show, that’s why they had him go to Iraq she said he is doing really well on the new show I havn’t seen it yet). GET THIS TONY WAS COMMING BACK TO THE SHOW ( I fell over when she said that). Tony was going to come back and support Joan during the funeral for Aaron and they were going to make up! Mya and Darnell were actually adopting a baby and William and Monica had there baby.
I wasn’t happy with how they were going to start new season because she said they were going to flash forward and Tony, William and the baby Mya adopted were all going to be five and six years old, it sounded like they were going to skip a lot. anyways she came to my school during the writer’s strike and was confident that Girlfriends was comming back so I always woundered about her since the show was cxld. she made it a point to say “the CW wants to get rid of all their Black shows”.

I love that these women are giving these young girls positive reinforcement, but I agree with most of the posts here; we need programs like this in every city, all over the city, just regular folks to talk to these kids and understand them without passing judgement. Alot of kids are not comfortable enough to talk to their parents about issues or the parents don’t give them time or attention and they just need someone to talk to.

They need to have brothers addressing these young black men as well. We need to focus on both parties. Everyone needs to be responsible for what they do, not just young women. These young men thinks is cool to lie and have unprotected sex, but don’t want to deal with consequences. They think when displaying this behavior its being a man, but it not. Being an man/woman comes with responsiblity. And a lot of them don’t truely know the meaning. They see their uncles, older brothers, fathers having sex with differents women/girls and thinks that the norm and its ok. But it not. There is a reason why HIV/STD’s is at an alarming high rate. Responsibilty comes first. Sex was never meant to be done in a irresponsible fashion because there are major consequences if it is. Sadly, it has affected our young women on a GRAND scale. And if it persist, they will never know what true love and commitment is. They will always feel that they need to give into others desire in order to feel whole, even when they are unsure.. Sex does not mean love and vise versa. Sex is suppose to compliment the deep love that you have with that person. But first you need to understand what love means as well. Sex is the icing on the cake. I am glad these women step out of their busy schedules to be able to do this cause it truely take a village.

I must say being in attendance at this event is a real pleasure knowing how much the actresses were willing to share their lives with the students. All of the ladies are very beautiful, kind, and caring women. I applaud them all for doing what more people need to step up and do. Many people sit there and watching things go by. Take the time to talk to someone and share your story so that it may enlighten someone about how to be a lady or a young man. Be the Solution!!!!
