Jill Scott recently spoke about the spread:
“nobody ever celebrates women whose bodies are bigger than a size 8. But here I am, naked in a magazine at size 16. I hope that I can be an inspiration to all women. We’re all beautiful, each and every one of us.”

Ummm I am going to need them all to keep their clothes on. Not that they are not attractive ladies but give me a break with the whole….get naked to embrace your inner self crap, or to get others to appreciate their own bodies. Its just some freaky photographer and editors thinking up ways to push the envelope. I dont need to see anyones naked behind to appreciate my own body lets knock it off and call it what it is….a naked photo shoot…nothing more nothing less.
I agree, photographers are universally creepers. But, there is absolutely nothing wrong with nakedness.

Well have to give all 5 ladies credit for the shoot! It was refreshing to see “WOMEN”, posing naked with GRACE & CLASS for a good cause.
Too often, we see women with their ass cheeks and breasts all exposed, and legs spread wide open, all greased up or wet up in some “barely there at all” bikini…on the front cover of some mens magazine at the local news stands. Its becoming overdone! In my opinion.
This is very refreshing, for the women to do their thing in the ALLURE magazine.

I think seeing another woman who is successful, ambitious, talented, spiritually connected, and beautiful is just as empowering and inspirational. They’re feeding into the same stigma that they are tryin to eradicate. I think this takes women backwards, not forward. Successful and confident men don’t have to get nude on a cover to inspire others and neither should women…

Yes ok artistic nude….right…..aren’t we OVERSATURATED with naked chicks pics, whether artistic or not? I mean, Jill has to sell records, Gabrielle needs hollywood gigs, that’s the only reason why they pose nude, to get some attention. This kind of photoshoot has nothing to do with inner self/love of self. All the struggles our elders went through to stop our gender from being objectified, and these chicks are using lame excuses to get naked behind a camera. Do you ever see male R&B singers and actors going naked talking about “Yeah I love myself that’s why I do this”? Please. That’s the thing women of the industry to when they feel they don’t have any other option.

i agree with what everyone has to say but I also think it maybe liberating for a size “16″ woman to be nude in a magazine i mean besides Tocarra (who by no means is plus size) who else do we see who has a roll or 2 nude in ANY magazine?? high fashion, men, etc… us curvy girls don’t get magazine love at all so i do think it was neccessary just not the get nekkid 2 get in touch with u kind of way

Angie Harmon reminds me of Nicole Brown Simpson and her sister (the one with the black hair). Also, women can appreciate their bodies with their clothes on. I thought that Gabrielle Union was doing this shoot to reassure women who have been raped that they can still love their bodies and themselves but I was wrong.

Why is it necessary at all?
This is not about self esteem or being comfortable in your body… the only way for a woman to feel good about her body, is to look in the mirror and LOVE what she sees. Looking at Jill on Gabrielle don’t have a damn thing to do with your body, because it ain’t your body.

I dont see what the big deal is, women pose naked all the time in contemporary society. its good that the magazine used women of different races & sizes instead of the usual stick thin blonde naked in a mag. At least theyre representing that beautiful women come in different sizes, colours, shades etc, most magz dont take such an approach to photoshoots.
I understand why Jill did it to show that as a larger women she can feel comfortable being nude and embrace her size, (though she does look quite bad. The pose was not good, her face looks weird and her hair is a mess).

I think the issue with a lot of women is that we are tired of being looked at as just sexual objects – we are worth more than our butts, breasts and what’s between our legs. I think that’s what the issue is. It appears that some women validate their worth based on her body.
Now as far as I’m concerned, what a grown woman does with her own body is completely her business. I may not agree with it or like it, but hey, I’m not buying the magazine.

Too much. I think that more of Jill could have been shown more tastefully. They got Gabrielle looking nice and you can use her. However, with Jill, the pic is so photoshopped to tone down her thickness. The pose Jill is doing is so awkward that you can’t see the beauty of her thickness. It’s unfortunately that society is still prejudice to plus sized women. I think Jill’s picture would have been better if she was lying down and covering her breasts. That would have been a beautiful pic with the leaves draped around her.

I get your point but Black women are not the only race of women that pose nude. All women by their own decision poses nude.

My personal opinion I feel that women in general complain too much about women posing nude. We got women on here that don’t like video vixens but post comments every time of them being hoes and keeping them relevant or they use the colorism issue saying they don’t never have any dark skin women in the video but be the same ones complaining about women being the video and how degrading it is. It might look grotesque to you but that woman obviously doesn’t have a problem with it. Another issue I would like to touch to on is that women like to play favoritism on what is exceptable of selling sex. Prime example would be entertainers. Janet, Beyonce, Madonna, Mariah might get passes, however, video vixens don’t? Video vixens or model vixens sell sex because they are pin up girls. They make their money temporarily showing skin and some do have other plans outside of modeling. I feel like showing skin is showing skin no matter who does it. If you are a person who gives exceptions then you might be prejudice because of your strong distaste of video vixens.
My thing is I feel women give exceptions to women who sell sex PERIOD. Some women are more subtle or extreme than others but the bottom line is being in the industry you have to sell a sex appeal it is to enhance a sexual fantasy because many of us humans are sexual beings. I feel that women are less open of discussing sex without being judgmental.
I myself don’t have an issue with it because it doesn’t affect me I still get respect from men regardless of the celebrity women who sell sex.
My last question for the ladies is would you have a problem if fine ass Idris or any celebrity man that you find attractive was naked? My guess no because we women have sexual fantasies whether you admit or not like the men do about Beyonce lol
